honestly i respect tf out of polyphony for the fact they pulled this off on ps2 - also good work on recording the component out to see the real quality of the ps2 unmodified makes me reflect on using pcsx2 - it just comes out so much crispier, but without the same polyphonic look as the OG ps2 hardware I'm really impressed with the team at pcsx2 for allowing us to play these games in high definition with beautiful polygon rendering and anti alias smoothing
@@purwantiallan5089 Not only playable.. There is a Gran Turismo 4 Retexture Mod that helps in improving the graphics immensely. Look it up! It is working very smoothly on my PC.
The step up in graphics from the PS1 to PS2 was unreal. I remember buying a PS2, playing GT3, and being utterly blown away by the graphics - especially the lighting down the stretch of Trial Mountain, after the tunnel.
If you check some videos of this played on emulator with higher resolution it's amazing how good it can look with those same assets. They really did a good job on this for a PS2 title.
@@AgretI always read this in multiple places, with people saying emulation is not valid to say graphics are amazing in a game, but the truth is that, besides antialiasing or post processing effects, resolution itself doesnt make the game look "better" than the original hardware. The textures doesnt change, everything is the same, is just more clear. Resolution only makes the edges of the polygons and anything that isnt textured like gourand shading to upscale. If anything i think it looks worse than OG hardware on CRTs because CRTs upscales perfectly the textures and emulators on modern displays only upscales the edges (since textures were made for 480p) and makes the picture less blurry, but if you want to showcase the graphics of a game is totally valid to use an emulator (as long as it works well of course).
@@mandibiedermann2246 I think i forget to say, one of the games i think scales the best on emulators are some PSP games like Locoroco since it used vectors, or 3d games with very high poly count but use extensive use of gourand shading instead of textures like the first four Crash games. The 3d models looks somehow better than a lot of early PS2 texture models! In CTR they even managed to simulate textures which just gourand shading like the boss garage portraits. If someone didnt told me i though they would be incredible high quality textures.
@@sebastiankulche yes exactly, gouraud shading was the main feature of PS2, and i think the easiest to be enplended. Some other coders were very talented and used all tricks to access dot3 mapping textures and harmonic spherical lighting
I use to play GT4 on a Wega 42 inch DLP back when it came out. The 720p is definitely a bonus but the CRT helps blend the graphics and it looked so much more vibrant. My cousin was playing it on a CRT and everytime I would go over I couldn't point my finger on why it looked so damn good. In HD it looks more clear obviously but I don't think it is a good enough trade off going over from a CRT back then. Now a win is if you could play it on both.
For a game that now turned 19 years old, in 2024, GRAN TURISMO 4 in terms of graphics, is very advanced for its time. Easily resembles a PlayStation 5 game.

@@sinasmiley4595 The PS2 ran this game and most others internally at 512 x 448i(224P) so 480P in games when it was able to always looked better than 1080i upscaled from 480i, which itself was upscaled from 448i/224P.
