    I am danish myself and this movie has paved the way for danish filmmaking, in denmark we focus less on the effects and more on the story, that has left us some incredible films like for example adams æbler, blinkende lygter and so on - all incredibly good danish movies, i highly recommend you watch some of them George.

    I remember analysing this movie in school. It is a brilliant movie I think and showcases a lot of Denmark's best acting talent as well as just being effective story telling.

    I studied Dogma in film school so interesting, although its rules are limiting in a way it does bring some of the most raw elements of film to the forefront.

    Will you make an extended video about Dogme 95 and how both Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg ultimately broke their own rules?

    • @meWASHER

      CJonesApple Literally came here to write the same comment. Dogme 95 has always been a bit of a joke in my eyes, considering the two people behind it couldn't even follow their own rules one time. That being said, it was the catalyst for some very great films.

      Lars didnt "eventually" break the rules, he realised nothing he had made followed them so he made a single movie that did and then just did his weird lars-y things from then on. He's said so in interviews, he made no effort to follow them after Idioterne

      I actually don't think a single Dogme 95 movie ever followed the rules perfectly. Even Festen, the first one, credits its director, which is directly against the rules. Arguably a small violation that doesn't affect the film itself much, but a direct violation nonetheless.

    Festen (Dogme #1) will always be my favorite Dogma 95 film because it's really wonderfully shot for a film that was shot with Standard Definition DV camcorders. In fact what i like the most about it is that, just like "Idioterne" by Lars Von Trier, it was shot on video, blown up to 35mm Film and that Film master was the source for the later Homevideo releases and TV versions. And it looks gorgeous. Especially (and in particular) the lowlight and indoor shots. The Filmlayer really does something amazing to the digital video material and gives it an even more organic look and even partially looks a bit like 16mm. Actually I prefer THAT workflow a lot more than simply creating a Video Master on HD CAM, like David Lynch did with "Inland Empire". The Sony DV camcorders from the late 1990s really had amazing CCDs and great optics built in. I too have a model from that era as the camera that was used for Festen and if you shoot in a environment with muted or not too bright lights and having the whitebalance correctly set, you get absolutely amazing looking shots.

    I really enjoyed this film, and the Dogme 95 methodology profoundly heightened the necessary sense of voyeurism I felt when watching it. I think Dogme 95 was an interesting academic exercise, but, like any dogma, the full benefit comes when people have the freedom to adapt the rules in the interests of creating something good - not just something obedient.

    I was always an advocate of Dogme95, but back before I learned that the creators were never 100% serious about it; American cineastes took it REALLY seriously. Even though I find most of them uninteresting in terms of story, the concept was nevertheless invigorating and I think there should be an attempt (albeit short-lived) to bring it back, and with the original DV aesthetic. I've always wanted to make one since 1999, and hopefully, I'll get around to it one day.

    I guess you said everything absolutely necessary, but this did feel rather short.
    Anything more about "Dogme 95"? Even given the restrictions, it seems like the visuals could be a lot better -- set some proper white balance, some better lighting... have any future "Dogme 95" films done this, has it evolved or did it die off? And besides the comparably "luddite" conceit of that style, is there really anything else noteworthy about Festen? Or about future films done in that style?
    I'll look forward to your next video. I'm guessing you shot these all at once and so each is probably pretty brief.

      Actually the rules also state that any lighting has come from the actual lights present in the scene.. And yes, this style remained a large part of danish film making for many years, even though 100% commitment to the rules died off pretty quickly.

    • @PrebenHollywoodTV
      @PrebenHollywoodTV 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      "Festen" is highly recommendable, and one of the Dogma films that utilizes the rules of Dogma in the best way possible.
      The limitations does not hinder the movie from being engaging, but actually helps it a lot: Because of the natural lighting and non-edited sound, we as an audience feel like we are watching something real, like a home video someone shot at the party (even though the whole thing plays like there isn't a camera)
      The a-list of danish actors in the movie bring their absolute best, improvises their lines and talk like real people talk, adding to the realism and thereby creepiness of the whole subject matter. That nuance is of course lost on people who don't speak the language (can't blame you) and only have the subtitles to go by.
      One good thing by not being danish and watching the movie, is that you won't recognize any of the actors, and be reminded that it's "just a movie"
      If you want to give the Dogma films a try, I would say check this one out + "The Idiots" / "Idioterne". The two movies are as different as day and night, but highly unique and watchable.
      Dogma died out after a couple of years, my guess is because a lot if directors didn't know what to do with it, therefore making movies where you kinda wished the whole thing was just filmed with a proper camera, and had some background music. But these two movies understand the purpose of their limitations, and couldn't have been made any other way

    I actually really liked the Dogme 95 movies, it was an interesting concept including using only "practicals" within the movie such as ceiling lights and daylight etc I think that the movie The Idiots got some serious criticism for portraying mentally challenged in a bad light (no pun intended).

    • @dirtypure2023

      Dave Dogge I understand the intent behind this style of filmmaking, but only handheld camera? No tripods? lol
      To me, that's unnecessary even in the context of a stripped-down approach to cinema. Tripods existed long before the advent of special effects and the whole summer blockbuster style of movie, so why do away with such a fundamental tool?

    • @davedogge2280
      @davedogge2280 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because as I remember reading Dogma 95 a lifetime ago ... they wanted the film crafting experience to be organic. Lars von Trier is an interesting chap, he did Dogville which is not a Dogma 95 movie but was rather like a stage play on film with Nicole Kidman. I thought that movie marked the death of Dogma 95 as an ongoing project.

    • @KitchenSinkSoup

      Anthony K. Watson What do you expect the U.K. version to do.

    • @winnerwatson1883
      @winnerwatson1883 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Roland Deschain Not exist for one watch mojo is enough or at least be better than its predecessors. But their lists are narrated by a monotonous English accented twit and their lists don't make sense like "Top 10 worst British accents" but English accents are the only present inflections. Because Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland don't exist for a "U.K." division!

    • @KitchenSinkSoup
      @KitchenSinkSoup 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Anthony K. Watson Shouldn't you have said pandering to English audiences then?

    • @winnerwatson1883
      @winnerwatson1883 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roland Deschain It's a UK division shouldn't be expected that would have something for Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish audiences because you shouldn't have named (blank) UK if all they do is focus on England. As England is one of four countries in the UK (if you prefer or two countries, a principality that no longer exists and a Providence) not the UK itself. They should have named it watch mojo England not watch mojo UK. But it's just a thought.

    If dogme 95 rules are canon to anything then a great portion of vines from back in the day would qualify (not an original observation). But in regards the first time I ever EVER saw stellan Skarsgard on screen was Thor (sue me) and I always saw him as a wholesome person (who prob is in real life). I never thought in my life time I would see his cock, balls, and taint on multiple occasions. If I could sum up my take on Lars von triers career it would be “Thanks Lars, I hate it. Especially Dogville.” It’s almost like watching a train wreck you can’t look away from.

    Sorry to inform you but Dogme 95 was created only for monetary reasons. Trier fessed up some years ago that the reason they did it was because the studio (They owned) had very little money and wanted to save some money in their productions. They used Dogme 95 as an excuse for "Artistic" reasons.

    after lars von trier and thomas Vinterberg started dogme style filmmaking, the Danish people started to abuse it and used it way wrong. but i'm glad that it's almost dead, because filmmaking means (in my opinion) putting an effort for every possible thing on screen and not be lazy and put fucking effort on whitebalance and stopping that sickening handheld puke shit. btw a movie called (Hævnen) from Denmark, won a fucking oscar and golden globe (i don't really care about oscar and golden globe) and the movie is one of the worst that have probably won an oscar !!!.
    good video btw :)

      Aningaaq Møller Eh, don't really agree. The point of the limitations is too force you to sharpen your other tools. This can turn out some bad movies but also very impressive ones when you think of the limitations they had. And if you get too maximalist, getting everything you can on screen, you end up being either Kubrick or Michael bay. And being on the wrong end of that spectrum is suicide

      the point that i'm saying is putting an effort and not buying tools. i know how it feels to have a huge limitation, i used to film on my small phone Sony Ericsson k800i and i didn't get seasick by watching them and i'm not saying that mine where good at all. i'm saying it's sickening to abuse handheld for a while and looks like the cameraman is drunk or something. i hope you get my point a little better.

      The swoops and jerks of handheld can make a movie feel like a ship in a storm. If every movie is like that it could certainly get sickening after a while.
