As a trek fan one thing that’s apparent is the devs love the series. There’s lots of returning cast members voicing themselves, great attention to detail on things like uniforms and ship types, and a story that really feels like it was made with long time fans of the franchise in mind

Sure they love it. Thas why it had no graphics...physics or any other upgraded in 12 years. It's basically go here press f to interact. Like an interactive TV episode. Press 1234 for combat rinse repeat. A star trek game simulation like star citizen but in the trek universe would be awesome. No loading screens. Proper interior....possibilities would be endless. Only thing they've done is add ships. This game needs a serious developer and a new engine and a simulation mmo hybrid like star citizen. The inventory system is horrible. You can get hundreds of loot in a mission but you can only move or scrap one item at a time. Everything is a cash grab. Jesus you jave to pay real life money to get more cargo space in your inventory..... you have to pay for literally everything that is standard in even any f2p mmo....paying for extra inventory space? After one mission your inventory could be full. Then you can sell one at a time. What a pain.

      @MaximilliansHammer ปีที่แล้ว +33

@@thirdworldrider6991 I don't know. I've been playing for years and I've never spent a penny. Inventory management is just part of the game. And when you enter a system and have to have a space battle against 6 or 7 Vaaduar ships, it's a bit more complicated than 1234. I'm not saying some of the basic interactivity isn't a little simplistic at times, but that's hardly the only thing going on in the game.

Where else could you go to see Kate Mulgrew, Mary Wiseman, and Chase Masterson hamming it up playing evil Mirror Universe versions of Janeway, Tilly, and Leeta the Evil Dabo Girl! I love all the returning bit characters being played by the original actors, and callbacks to 1-off aliens from random episodes of Voyager or DS9.

@@thirdworldrider6991 There have been graphics updates. I remember at least one major update where dynamic light was introduced and it made the game look a LOT better. I'm glad they love the series, and that they garner attention from the actual cast. All of that is great, but something as simple as romulan alien tac being OP when compared to other factions in the game seems like the devs either don't care, or know what they did, and are good with an imbalance being present in their game.

  • @BrowncoatFairy

This game's saving grace is its clear and obvious love for, and encyclopedic knowledge of the Star Trek franchise. It's an entire universe of planets that are almost all references to events that happened within the various shows and movies. From a gameplay perspective, the ship combat really is the highlight, and they did such a wonderful job with their ships that the TV show "Picard" turned to Star Trek Online to borrow their ship designs for seasons 2 and 3.

As a guy who has been playing STO on and off since 2014 you are pretty much correct.
Ship combat is definitely the highlight, although ground combat I don't really mind its flaws as I blame most of my grievances to me just being bad at playing as I don't use key shortcuts and point click every ability I use.
I keep coming back for largely the lore and flying the awesome ships, even recently trying to make characters from other franchises as my captains. This month I made Grand Admiral Thrawn, who is nearly a perfect replica except this damn game don't have options for brightly colored or glowing eyes (couldn't find a deep red that would stand out).

As an avid fan of Star Trek, I've played this game for the entirety of its life. I have seen it change over time. They have recently updated the new player experience. I also enjoy that they can add characters and content from the new Star Trek shows that are on Paramount +. I don't know that one can get this type of content anywhere else. Having the actors of the show's voiceover episodes means we get to play right alongside some of our favorite heroes, from Spock to Captain Janeway and Quark to Odo. It is also very touching that actors who have passed shared their reprisal of these roles and the in-game monuments to everyone who helped create this world or played a part in its creation showing a reference and respect for each person and the whole team. I love it and will continue to play the games until they press that power button on all of their servers.

I'm a Star Trek fan and have been playing this off and on since release in 2010. Your review is spot on and humorous in all the right ways.
It had its warts on release, and many of them still exist. The ground combat in particular is dated, the engine is held together with chewing gum and hope, and even if you've spent your way to the DPS charts, you quickly realize there wasn't much reason to dump that much money anyway.
Still, it has some nostalgia bait for the rabid Trek fan, and space combat is pretty fun. It's always worthwhile to hop on line and blow some shit up, but this isn't a title that has a lot to offer the serious MMO player looking for a heavy endgame or PvP combat. It's a game that heavily (extremely heavily) monetizes FOMO and the zeal of Trek fans, giving them a sandbox to fly their favorite canon ship around in. At least for a little while.

This game has an extremely strong and loyal player base and Cryptic has been improving the game all along, including pulling in actors from the actual series to do mission voice overs. Also, you didn't really experience the end game. Leveling and doing an event TFO is an extremely small part of the game. I encourage you to continue playing and I am betting you'll see that the game is a lot more than what you portrayed here. The video was funny, though. • @deadbird3144

      STO had no innate endgame.
It sells you reputations as one, but that's just extended midgame grind feeding into endgame builds that are magnitudes too overpowered for any content.
So people choose their own meta endgames like DPS chasing (subform of speedrunning), your mentioned space barbie aka collecting visuals and skins, outfits etc just to look at it. PvP doesn't qualify as innate endgame either as it has no rewards.
STO is handled like a star trek theme park, with MMO aspects and balance being entirely neglected. That works because the target group is, in their own words, "not gamers", but casual players that happen to be trek fans.

You do get between 3 and 4 free T6 ships/year with traits and consoles. Many others can be bought off the exchange for in game earnable currency. You may not be chasing the very tops of the insanely overinflated DPS ladder, but you can easily perform respectably in any content up through elite. As far as spending money? If you buy 2 new ships/year you are paying out half what you would be paying Blizzard or Square Enix for a World of Warcraft or FF XIV subscription. Then it's like I want to have GOD LIKE shields and hull regeneration or be a glass cannon that has radiation beams.
My point is as it is now with the shear number of ships and optional modules it CANT be pay to win. You can pay all you want but the guy who spent 10 years grinding 10 full ships and crews up to their max level and peak performance will walk over you. Nothing in the real money store comes anything close to the max potential you can achieve through hard work in the game. Even the super rare random drops in the loot chest are simply not good enough to make it pay to win.

For the PvP side it is still there. There are to open PvP maps, one for space and one for ground. I would not recommend it until you get a good build together. There are still several PvP groups that have matches and can help you with that side of the game. Loved you take on the game and the new insight. I know this is probably counter to the impression that people who have never played STO, but this game is the best MMORPG I’ve ever played. It’s one of those games that reward you if you give it your all. What reallt hooked me was “collecting” rare species of bridge crew. I’ve customized them and even built background stories for each of them. This game will turn you into a super nerd if you go for maximum immersion. I’ve also 3D printed my ship sealing the deal as a STO player for life LoL 😂

I definitely like this game the best. I switch back and forth between it and SWTOR. I can imagine a lot of things that I would do if I magically had millions of dollars and was in charge of production--like expanding what I can do with my unused ships, like making personal fleets and armadas to be used as a group in combat and making the ground combat a little more fluid and modern--maybe something like Mass Effect. But it definitely has the most relaxing/non-grindy and full-of-potential basic structure of any games I have played.

I got so geeked out playing this game I wrote a several page bio for my character. Put a lot of thought and time into it. Even had a few compliments from random players saying the enjoyed my story. That's what it's all about. Role-playing my ultimate fantasy. Flying through the stars in my TNG starfleet uniform commanding my own starship. Far as Trek goes I don't think we'll ever get another game near this close to actually being in starfleet.

Good stuff, got yourself a new subber. I have played this game on and off since 2013. I grew up watching TNG, but was not hardcore into ST. This game actually got me to go back and stream every show over a couple of years. I think the biggest draw for me is how well they do with the narrative and weaving into storylines from the show. The game closes up open storylines, continues closed one, and overall has a great storyline. Pretty much every single actor except Sir Pat reprises their role in the game during strong story events. Overall I have a great time with it and have currently jumped back in after a 2 year hiatus.

I played star trek online 10 years ago in college (dang now I feel old). The entirety of my star trek lore knowledge was Klingons, Romulans, and Borg. I had a blast (mostly with starship combat, I didn't really enjoy the away team stuff). I got to max level, reached the point that I was grinding for rare parts and components to build the super rare parts necessary to compete in the high ranking Borg conflicts at the time. Then was done with it. Came back 3 years later and the game was unplayable because I couldn't remember what anything did and my characters were so high level that the game expected me to know how to do everything.
Of course that's a common experience coming back to a game you played a lot. Also my character was no longer considered max level because the level cap had gone up.
    That's my experience.

For new players, it's just about learning how to use the game systems to your advantage. Easiest things to figure out:
1: make new characters during Delta/Klingon/Temporal/Gamma events. They get good gear and plenty of resources and cash just for playing the game.
2: Use the exchange mercilessly. You can get great gear for anywhere from 10k to 500k, and with a million credits (not hard to get) it's easy to spec out a great build. Don't settle for anything less than very rare (purple) quality, it's a baseline for this game.
3: Do the yearly event and monthly events. You get great rewards (usually), the year-end prize is incredibly good, and it gives you plenty of reputation progress as a daily op.
4: Spend money wisely. If you wanna spend real cash, which you absolutely don't have to because pvp is basically dead in this game, don't spend it foolishly. Ship bundles, starter packs, and free promotions are your friends. Mudd's market, level boosters, and impulse buys of single starships at full price are your enemy. Wait for a sale, sometimes it's only 20% but every blue moon you get 50%. You can wait.
5: Finish the storyline for its rewards. Plenty of powerful space and ground gear can be acquired from basic story missions. You can do it all on the lowest difficulty too without consequence, as higher difficulties aren't worth the extra time spent, except on TFO's.
I love this game, acknowledge its many flaws, and encourage fans to give it a go. Just my advice.

They have been redoing the models and textures on a lot of stuff in the last year and they did add a new lighting engine. They also overhauled the appearance of damage on ships and the various explosions. None of the individual bits are as drastic as switching over to a new engine but at this point the cost of doing that would be ludicrous with everything they would have to made sure worked.
Also on the visual side I don't know if you played since they added the options for various vanity shields and the options for slotting in engines, deflectors, and shields into visuals only slots while using whatever other gear you want for the stats and set bonuses.

The IP is it's strongest point, and it's use of it.
The games very star trek, and the voice acting of familiar voices really helps.
While it's by no means perfect, and shows its age a bit, it's been maintained well, and has not lost its way. The free to play model is good too, there are some must have purchases but are rather inexpensive and often are account wide.
There are some eye wateringly expensive packs but they are completely optional what the game gives you is perfectly usable, but dropping say 20-30$ on a t6 ship with account wide access is not bad, especially when there is no sub.
