Near-Death Experiences: The BEST EVIDENCE Of Life After Death | Dr. Bruce Greyson

  • We often think the mind is a creation of the brain, or that the mind and the brain are one and the same. But when the brain is offline for a number of reasons, like illness or injury, the mind can sometimes still be very active.
Today on The Broken Brain Podcast, Dhru talks to Dr. Bruce Greyson about this phenomenon in the context of near-death experiences or NDEs. We have to remember that even just 20 years ago new scientific ideas were emerging that people thought were crazy. People are always skeptical of things they haven’t been taught. Now, the study of near-death experiences is pushing the boundaries of modern research.
Dr. Greyson is a Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the UVA School of Medicine. His award-winning research led him to become a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and to be invited by the Dalai Lama to participate in a dialogue between Western scientists and Buddhist monks in India.
Dr. Greyson’s interest in near-death experiences began just a few months after graduating from medical school, when he treated an unconscious patient in the emergency room who stunned him the next morning with an account of leaving her body. That event challenged his beliefs about the mind and the brain, and ultimately led him on a journey to study near-death experiences scientifically, leading to more than a hundred publications in medical journals.
In this episode, Dr. Greyson shares some of the most dramatic first-person accounts of near-death experiences from his book After. Dhru and Dr. Greyson discuss how NDEs reveal a lot about dying and what might come after, but they also reveal just as much about life and living, about the value of compassion and our interconnectedness with one another, and about what makes a life meaningful and fulfilling. They also talk about how NDEs can help to transform the fear of dying that pervades our culture-into a healthy view of it as one more milestone in the course of our lives.
In this episode, we dive into:
    - Dr. Greyson’s first experience with a patient who had a near-death experience (4:32)
    - A near-death experience story from Dr. Greyson’s book (15:51)
    - What near-death experiences tell us about the mind-body connection (19:37)
    - The parallels between psychedelic experiences and near-death experiences (29:06)
    - The misconceptions around near-death experiences (34:58)
    - How near-death experiences reduce the fear of death (39:08)
    - How to get the benefits of a near-death experience without actually having one (41:54)
    - The history of near-death experiences (46:51)
    - Reincarnation beliefs among near-death experiencers (49:22)
    - How near-death experiences change people’s lives (1:01:45)

My partner of almost 10 years had passed away in March. He went home to Oregon to visit family and we lived in Tennessee at the time. The morning he passed away was at his parents house. That morning his mom didn’t know he passed was asleep. She said she dreamt of him coming to her and he was outside her bedroom window looking in at her and smiling. He had this beautiful glow around him like a bright light but it wasn’t a hurtful light. I was a comfortable light. He was dressed very well and he was in his beautiful white dress shirt with his laptop bag around his shoulders crisscrossed over him. He was waving and smiling so beautifully. She woke up and thought she wasn’t dreaming. She went to go find him and there he was… passed away. RIP Quade. I love you and miss you so much.

I know this is trivial and ultimately unimportant, but this just drives me to DISTRACTION: the word is both spelled and pronounced, Dreamed, not "dreamt", learned, not learnt, etc. I'm sorry, but poor English, grammar, and speaking skills are a major distraction when trying to both read and listen some of this, and the younger guy with facial scruff is also distracting with his improper pronunciation of the word, association; it is NOT pronounced "ASHO•SHE•ASHON," it's pronounced ASSO•SEE•ASHON. Sorry, but this is a MAJOR DISTRACTION for many readers and listeners.

When my 84yo father lay actively dying, his watery faded old blue eyes closed, at his last breath his eyes opened and they had turned brilliant sky blue!! He pointed past me to empty corner of room, exhaled and died, his eyes returned to faded old... There's no medical reason for this phenomena. @@jessedavid811 that's amazing! I saw something I believe is similar but in someone who is alive. I was on a bus and a man got on and sat besides me. He had a very comforting presence. We talked like we knew eachother and I had a very calm feeling come over me. I looked over at him and his eyes were glowing blue. Not like someone with blue eyes but like a being with blue light shining out from behind their eyes. When his stop came up, he went to the exit, turned around and waved at me then got off the bus. It felt like I was in a dream. I thought I was maybe imagining things but then I've heard other stories of people seeing this blue glow. Either in people who are dying or in people who are alive and believed to be spirit guides. It's awesome to know there is a likelihood that something peaceful is out there and guiding us in life and in death.

@@thepresentmoment369 it was truly astonishing, his old 84yo kidney failure faded watery eyes opened suddenly after 3hrs of him quietly sleeping, I was right in front hovering over his face smiling but crying, it all happened so fast, they were so vivid brilliant crystal clear gorgeous colour blue, I've yet to find a comparison even on the most beautiful sunny day with rich blue sky. My Dad looked at me, then past my head to empty corner of hospital room, he seemed scared and raised his shaky arm to point, I quickly turned to see but of course I didn't see anything, I quickly turned back to Dad face, he exhaled ( I accidentally breathed it in) and he was gone, his eyes immediately returned to faded old colour. This was a gift from the Divine for me and my sister who saw it too. This was 8 years ago but I tell this everywhere I can, hoping people will take every word as absolute truth and give them some hope perhaps. I'm 66 and have no reason to fabricate what happened. Behold the Glory I reckon. Having read all I can on NDEs during the 70s and 80s, when my mom was in and out of consciousness in ICU from pneumonia after hip replacement surgery, I knew she was seeing relatives passed. Bending down over her, I asked her, "You see them, don't you?" She nodded yes and a tear dropped from the outside of her closed eye. I told her she could go because I felt her guilt if she should go. I reassured her. I could sense her relief. She went under. She passed 6 hours later. Many did not understand my joy at her funeral.
We must overcome ourselves and be in their place. Their death is the highlight of their existence here on Earth. Celebration of Life? Not the way I think of it. 😊❤

In the 1950s one of my grandfather's brothers died on the operating table while having kidney surgery. He described his out of body death experience as peaceful and wonderful!! He said he went to heaven and walked on beautiful green grass with flowers in colors that we don't have here on earth. He felt the brightest of light and was overwhelmed with love and peace. He wasn't there long, when people in gleaming robes told him the time wasn't right and he had to go back. He wasn't happy about it. The doctors brought him back. He was mad that he was back on earth!!!

My great uncle, born in 1885 (I was born in 1953) told me that when he had double pneumonia during the war, probably in '42 or '43, he "dreamed" that he rose out of his body and ascended to a heavenly place. There were uncountable angels all around, and all singing. He said that a voice told him that he hadn't been living right and that it was not yet his time and that he still had work to do. Later that night, a family sitting up with him, heard him talking and knew that the fever had broken back in those days before any antibiotics. The fever either broke and you lived or the pneumonia killed you. Sounds like an NDE to me. He lived to be in his early 90s.

A few months back i had a heart attack, and i was flown down to Aberdeen from Wick (Scotland) I was wide awake on the operating table and went into shock when the surgeon asked me to breath in so he could get the stent cables past my lungs.....I began shouting at him "Im going to die aint I!" and he ignored me ..........I was shaking like i was in a fridge with no clothes on......then suddenly a strange pressure enveloped me which felt like two arms wrapping around me from my shoulders down to my hips......and i heard the words "You'll be ok!" in my right ear, and i instantly calmed down. I mean the shaking stopped and i felt very calm within seconds of that event......only at that point did the surgeon then look at me and say "You're not going to die today!" That surgeon fixed my heart in 35 mins and i have been advised my heart will be ok so long as i stop smoking and do a bit of excercise.......of course now i think back to that odd event and tell myself i must have imagined it, or maybe the stent cables moving inside me somehow gave me the feeling of arms around my body, but stent cables cant say "You'll be ok!".......

My larger than life beloved dad died the night before Christmas eve and 2 days before his birthday last year. I was with him in my living room and he all at once sat STRAIGHT UP in that damn god awful hospital bed made a gurle sound as he took his last breath and fell over onto his side. I immediately inadvertently started screaming daddy no please don't go and then i hit my knees screaming this guttural hopeless despair kind of scream feeling like he took everything with him when he died. Then suddenly I felt this intense warm sensation wrapping me up like a hot blanket and mid scream i felt EVERY SINGLE drop of pain literally sucked out of the top of my head while instantly replacing it with the most loving peaceful feeling ive ever had which happened so quickly that my mouth was still open then I started to giggle audibly totally inadvertently and felt my face getting really hot like someone with a very high fever had put their hands on my cheeks to comfort me. All at once i knew deep in my soul it was my dad trying to help me one last time which is so like him and to this day that level of all consuming hopelessness and despair hasn't returned even as im crying profusely as i type this because I miss him so much i still dont feel what i did immediately upon his death. These stories give me hope that just maybe hes in a beautiful place awaiting my arrival one day. Thankfully I no longer feel like I died as well.

It was a little after midnight when I was laying in bed crying hysterically, praying to God to please make sure my mom would die a Christian. All of a sudden, I sat up in bed with the same warm feeling that you had and even giggled like you did. I didn't know why at the time, but I thanked God for answering my prayer. A few minutes later, I had gotten a call that my sister had just found my mom deceased on her couch. She was only 54 yrs old and died of a heart attack unexpectedly. I truly believe God was telling me my mom had just entered the gates of heaven.

My mom died in 2022, a few months after I had a vivid dream, I feel I have to differentiate it from the usual dreams I have had, because it was very different, and a bit difficult to describe it.... It was my mom...
It wasn't a dream about her, ...it was her,...
The best way I can describe "seeing" her, was that I "saw" her but it wasn't her physically, visually,....
Although if asked to draw what she looked like, I'd be able to,... but it definitely wasn't her physical face,...
The really weird part was that as I saw her, I instantly recognized her,...
...AND that I recognized that it was MORE ... it was as if I became aware that this was all of my mom, ... without any doubt or fear,...
...and the only message conveyed was ,..."Okay"
    that she was "okay"
This is what I experienced, I don't question the experience, as far as I'm concerned, my mom communicated to me, through a dream,... that she was okay.
I've had dreams about her since she died, and this particular "dream" was not an ordinary dream,...
This experience, I believe should be classified differently, ... I think it would be beneficial to us all if we can discuss these types of experiences more openly and with greater acceptance of its reality.

I could relate to the receiver idea. And I wonder if we need to be on a certain frequency, or in a certain state to be able to receive those messages, and once we fall out of it, it’s so easy to forget it.
Days after my mom passed away, I had a dream at night. In the dream, I heard my late grandfather speaking to me in his voice that I hadn’t heard for years. He gave me an advice on my relationship, that I need to be more considerate of other’s perspective. But upon hear his voice calling out my name, I was so surprised, that I immediately began to wake up. So I ended up only receiving the first sentence he said to me, and the things he said afterwards, suddenly turned into symbols that I couldn’t comprehend, hence got lost as I woke up, but I clearly remember the “messaging” was coming to me still, it was just that I couldn’t parse it anymore.

I had a frightening experience my Dr said was a Hypnogogic expirence ( I know it was far more.). It had the same breath taking speed being sucked through a tunnel into total darkness. There was a presence that was the epitome of evil trying to take my baby from me. I never felt more helpless or hopeless. The interesting thing is I don't know if my little one came with me or not. I have been listening to others stories to see if anyone had another person come with them. I am blown away how specifically same the details are! To finish what happened, in case anyone is curious: Once I had lost all hope, knowing this rotten, evil thing was going to take my baby (and sadistically was enjoying my terror and realization) and there was physically NOTHING that I could do to protect her, another presence was there. Again, total and complete darkness. The word that I knew was the only thing I could describe it as was Divine. It made me feel so secure and safe and protected, like a little girl in her Daddy's lap safe. It conveyed to me (no words from any of us, that everything was fine and not to be afraid. The dark thing was NOT going to take my baby and I had no reason to believe it would. We were safe. I was still scared sh!tless, but I felt this being had more power than the dark one. This being put me/us back into physical form and I felt like it was in a hurry because it intended on dealing with the dark thing. I also agree that the most terrifying experience of my life was a blessing and gift. Why, I don't know, but it absolutely wiped every speck of doubt from my mind as to whether or not God is real.

One of the great take aways from this is that just reading and studying about NDEs can change people. I feel this has happened to me. I have read so many books about NDEs from way back in 1977 or 1978 when Raymond Moody published "Life after Life". At that time I was a college student and thinking I was an agnostic but that book and many others have changed me to be a much more compassionate person and helped me to find work in Hospice. I love the scientific approach Dr. Greyson takes and I now understand how the study as well as the experiences can change people for the better.

I had my first conscious out of body experience in 1976. I was reading a book on Raja Yoga by Yogi Ramacharaka. I remember the first chapter talking about that we are not our body, our emotions, or our thoughts. It proceeded to say that many may not have this experience for many lifetimes, or maybe later in life, and lastly if we were ready we could know now. I started getting sleepy and laid back in the sofa. Suddenly I was lifted out of my body and floated up to the ceiling and looked down upon my physical body on the sofa. From that day forward I spontaneously left my body every night upon sleeping. This happened over the next 8-9 years. I didn’t do anything to make this happen. It just happened. Starting in 1983 when at a spiritual retreat I started finding myself in spiritual classes with other students in higher dimensions being taught by Masterful ascended Beings, including Archangels and masters, etc. From my first OBE I’ve had no fear of death.

44:56 At about 8 or 9 yrs of age I discovered that I could " zone out" (what I called it) from a conscious state.
I began directing myself to do this and got so good at it that it happened quickly. I liked the peacefulness. I easily got myself into the state needed; so easily that I had to consciously pull myself back to be fully present by not letting my mind go there when I was feeling myself slip back. I would redirect my restfully focused thoughts or my increasingly unconscious state that moved me to "zoning out"
One day I was playing in a different neighborhood from my own with a small group of girls ,some I knew from school. I didn't like the hide and seek game they voted to play ( imo I was too mature to play)., I decided to sit the game out and enjoy the warm sunshine. I sat against a large tree and I decided to play my new game and "zone out". The girls wouldn't notice me and I'll be with them after their games. Strangely and for the first time it wasn't just my consciousness that left but found I was outside of my body in a new way .I hung out above my body, above the tree and nearby house roof. I was able to see myself as separate from my body?!
i looked down at myself under that tree and I was amazed- I knew that it was me sitting there looking very still. After a bit of time, felt I was up there too long and was worried I'd be noticed . I would scare the girls (my body wasn't moving) and I'd be embarrassed if this weird thing I was doing was questioned and I had no explanation. I tried to get back into my body, but I couldn't. It wasn't working and I began to panic. This hadn't happened the few times I had done this before. When all I had to do was decide to come out of that state and I was back and refocused. Finally, after a number of attempts that felt like I was hitting an invisible wall or force field that was resisting my will, I calmed myself. With focused will, I brought myself back to fully engage with my body. Not being discovered, I made a conscious decision I'd not be doing that again! What would happen if I could not get back? I did not want to find out. i have had many other experiences that are "strange"; this one I never tried to repeat.

I can tell you now from 1st Hand experience, I KNEW I was not on this earthly plane, I KNEW what was happening to me and Was I scared? No, I was 53 at the time and thought this is my time to go..!! After 12 days the Hospital called in my entire Family from 100's miles away to say goodbye to me (Machine turn off) and let me pass over.. Whilst my my mum was sitting there (she's 83) holding my hand in tears, I could see her holding my hand and all my family around my bed crying... True as I sit here, around 10 seconds before turn off time my Nan who died when I was 8 (1977) which is my Mums Mum shouted at me go back to Mummy, go back, go back, go back.. 15 seconds to timeout, I squeezed my mums hand and woke out of my induced Coma.!! so do we see our family? YES, do we see the light ? YES can we see dead relatives such as my Nan? YES..!! did I know I had cardiac arrest in my gym? No, I had absolutely NO idea what had happened to me, I am fit and healthy, I knew nothing until I came out of my Coma and my mum holding my hand screaming that I am alive, I woke up and the first thing I said "Wheres my Vape Machine" lol .. And that fellow readers is the truth of passing over I am speaking from 10000% experience in this matter, do I fear death now? No as we know NOTHING about it... I am now healthy and back to normal and have an ICD fitted inside me, just incase it happens again.. I wanted to stay there, was willing to die to do so, but was rather rudely kicked out in a flash of white light which lit up my entire bedroom as I felt a zap of electricity hitting me on the top of the head which brought me back feeling the pain of that charge of electricity all the way to my toes, as I threw myself out of bed trying to get away from the bolt of pain :( - For years I was angry about it. This happened in 1978... Just before being thrown out, I knew I wasn't supposed to stay there, but hung on anyway, deciding there was no way I was going to leave. Ha, I didn't have nails long enough to hold on, just speaking figuratively, I had no awareness of a body.

Open alot of interesting doors in my life time like remote viewing, studying higher consciousness, understanding time and space. Learning that pastors not really interested in talking to me. Moving forward into forth and fifth dimension. Synchronicity. Love. Selflessness. Environmentalist. Closer to Jesus.

This is a great interview. Dr Greyson talks about NDE without hype and sensationalising it. He admits he doesn't have the answers but his experience has been invaluable and is a great benefit to anyone who listens to him. I've never had an NDE but I have experienced a blissful state during meditation and it has made me consider that there is much more than the physical reality. We have to quiet our thoughts down to a standstill to be able to experience bliss. Afterwards it's very difficult - actually impossible - to truly describe the experience.

I loved Dr. Greyson’s book and passed it on to my wife and family. Rather than simply relate cases, as is common in books on this subject, each chapter centers on a different question (e.g Does Consciousness Continue?) or subject, defines it and why it’s relevant, provides an experiencer’s story, and probes the experience in the context of the chapter’s question. I found this to be immensely helpful in bringing structure to how comprehensively Dr. Greyson presents this material. Not being an experiencer myself, I have cultivated the “healthy skepticism” in myself that Dr. Greyson speaks of in this interview, and apply same to other subjects in this genre, including reincarnation, mediumship, ESP, and other consciousness studies. IANDS is a wonderful organization, and I support them via subscription. Really great interview!

Very interesting an authentic presentation, one can see that this doctor is not a charlatan, his language, his interpretation of facts of life, his approach to the unknown shows that one can accept with a little risk of being wrong his description of what is a near death experience.Even he doesn't mention it he gives a lot of hope to those who fear death. Thank you.very much.

After a serious suicide attempt I felt I was floating in darkness calmly then saw a light, I was told it wasn't my time & must return. I had no sense of the physical world but recalled the experience vividly when I woke several days later. Initially I wasn't pleased as I was sacked, broke & homeless but felt things would be alright. I spent the few pounds I had on flowers for the staff as they had to pin me down to stop me pulling out the tube to pump my stomach. Many decades later I helped a lot of people with mental health problems, which was immensely satisfying. My grandma also appeared to me in the early hours when I suddenly woke at the time of her death, the same had happened to her with her grandfather. I used LSD when young & felt a direct connection to everything around me without thought. I am afraid of pain (I worked with dying people who had to be fed & cleaned & couldn't communicate) but not death.

Dr. Bruce Grayson is a very likable human being. He comes across as a very credible person, unlike most of his colleagues who has bent the knee to big pharma and the almighty dollar. Most doctors in the US are in the profession strictly for the money and status, not because they care about others. It’s refreshing to listen to someone that has the courage to look outside the box and speak the truth, unafraid of the establishment.

@@deadhacker7075 I can only speak from memories of 2 "post death experience" in previous lives; but, in both, I felt distress about what I couldn't do without a body (to help others I cared about); but, in neither case did I feel any physical pain. In fact, in the one I came into this life remembering, I really don't think I even knew I was dead ~ I just remember being a toddler & desperately trying to find mother. I don't have any "between life" memories; but, I believe I only carried forward those memories which were important for my goals for the present lifetime. I think that people need to address out of body experiences more. Such as the woman Dr Greyson was talking with who had had a drug overdose. Seems to me that she was not near death but out of body. This is an experience I think that many more people have than the near death experience. I have had two OOB experiences, which definitely brought me to a place of understanding that I am much more than my body and quite independent of it. We should be able to talk about it more freely and professionals should take them more seriously so that people will not be afraid of understanding these experiences for what they are.

Excellent research about an extraordinarily profound human experience. I had a mild version of the NDE, so I can personally verify some of this. Once the acknowledgment and acceptance of the greater "quantum consciousness" reality fully permeates human culture, society and civilization, the human race will be changed massively and forevermore. NOTHING will EVER be the same for us.

Idk if it was the anesthesia or iv pain meds. But my partner was beside me the whole time after the surgery. In icu she said I was talking to my closet friend ive ever had in my entire life. He passed away in the same hospital a year prior. She said she kept hearing me talking to him. I feel so bad that I don't remeber any of it. Nothing. I cannot even try to think of any of it.
