I got an L47 and it's great. Started out with L3301 with a backhoe and it was good, but a bit slow. No complaints about the L47... it's got the power and speed to do a lot. Yes a similar or higher weight skidsteer or mini-ex will do it faster, but the L47 will still get the job done. I can make a mess with the backhoe then use the bucket to clean it up, then it's not too hard to remove the backhoe and attach a boxblade to make everything very clean looking. Single machine and it can literally do it all...and it it's too small to do it, then it's a really big job that needs really big equipment that I can't afford or have ability to transport without a dump truck/ semi. I'd love to have both a skidsteer and mini-ex, but fact is the TLB just gets me by and I haven't run into a situation it couldn't handle.
I was in the same predicament about the dump truck. Already have a dump trailer but knew I needed another dump body to haul stuff out. Pulled the trigger on a new dump truck and a 20k axle flatbed and have been on top of the world since

I started in May, with my MT100, no idea what I am doing, booked almost $6000 in the first few weeks of June, crazy start. I don't even have a trailer, doing all of my neighbour's waterfront rebuilds, I just drive my bobcat down the street essentially 😁😁😁😁😊😊 that mixed with a good chainsaw

There’s something to be said for making a smaller profit while providing jobs for more folks vs making a larger profit and working yourself into the ground. Keep doing good work.

I started out exactly like you in Indiana. Same type jobs and customers. Had a kubota BX2380. Thought I was everything and would compare it to others running bigger equipment and yet I could do a mulch job with it and could fit in backyard without taking out a fence or tearing up existing lawns. Then I started growing pretty quick. So got a CAT 304E2 my dream machine. Started growing faster. Got a bobcat T300 but old old old machine. Got even busier but maintenance was hell so I traded for the ASV RT40. Best machine I own. And now sold my BX2380 and got a BX23S. I found that my big machines I wanted so bad end up sitting more than my small machines. I love what we have now and they all stay busy. I try to have at least 2 machines moving a day. 3 full time crew and 2 part time. Sometimes I honestly want to go back to when I started and it was just me though. Yes we make more but it costs more to operate. My little bx2380 would run 4 days on 5.5 gallons of fuel. My mini runs through that in half a day of hard digging. Same on ASV. Then with $2500 a week in payroll, not to mention llc, insurance, and hauling. We make residential landscaping and grading production work at this time and it’s sexy to watch but at 38 years old I’m wondering if we grew it bigger than I should have so fast. We’ve been going at it solid for 3 years now. But I’ll say this…I just got the laser grader and you’d never regret it. Paid for itself in 3 jobs.

In any trade, when you are established and have a decent workload booked a month or so ahead, it is time to add a little extra to your quotation.
Charge more for single jobs. If you want to nurture a contractor who will give you regular work, you know what to do, but a non-trade client ( a one - off ) is where you can make the extra dough that makes things worthwhile. Domestic clients have no idea what the cost of your work is. They simply have a maximum cost in mind, and if you fit under ( or very close to ) that price, you will likely get the job.Taking on more and more staff is a risk, so look at making more from what you have.

Best Start setup is a Kubota M59 backhoe with a thumb on the back and a 14k GVWR 16' dump trailer. You need a grapple, forks and your bucket. M59 is the max weight a 14k trailer can take with the post available power for the setup. The backhoe is removeable and you have front hydraulics! Digging force is about a 4.5 ton excavator and the FEL will lift 5000lbs. Stumps, Trees, trenching, loading, traveling down the road, easy on yards. Just get an aftermarket cab and you'll have heat for the winter.
Get the last mounts for the machines for now. Spectra makes some that are very affordable. Then you don’t need a man on the ground holding a stick.

James… great videos! Agree completely that you just need to try and learn…each job will give you new skills. That said, I need some advice…. I just turned 50 so it’s a bit of a late start but need to transition from my “desk” job to small construction. I have two years left on my day job, so I do have some time to pick up small side jobs on nights and weekends. I do have a KX33, track loader, dump trailer and a Kubota grand L, so I have some flexibility with the types of jobs I could take. Here are the questions: 1). How do you get customers…. Do you advertise, up leads, word of mouth? 2). How do you price jobs …. Per hour, per gig?
Customers now are all word to mouth. I have a handful of contractors I do work for. And all my jobs are bid by the job first year I did daily rates and that never made me money so switched over to doing by the job!

I’ve got a M59 Kubota. I dig for underground electric, propane tanks and downspouts all the time. And I brush hog 20-25 acres a week on average. I’m a part time guy but it’s an awesome machine. The thing is a monster, wish I had a cab though lmao.

@@JamesMoVlogs SW Michigan. I researched for months before I bought one. It is truly impressive what it can do with the backhoe and the loader. The hoe has comparable specs to a 5 ton mini. Mine will be for sale this winter as I’m moving to a CTL.

Tractor is completely underated. When other dudes are tearing up turff with the skidsteer or excavator im just driving over the grass not leaving much of an impact. People notice thats especially already established developments.
The B series kubota tractor has a much tighter turning radios the the L series do. Some thing to consider..

Get a gooseneck dump trailer and haul both piece it’s cheaper then dump truck! Registration and insurance is stupid for dump truck in Cali and now you have to buy 2012 and newer because of carb!

I love all your videos! I mostly do driveway, outbuilding and garage removal type projects usually under 800 square feet. I’m ready to buy an excavator but I’m not sure what size I need. What is the smallest excavator you would recommend for these types of jobs?
The KX040 is a perfect all around machine. Strong, and has enough counterweight to knock and carry stuff over. Plus it can be hauled on a smaller trailer. 😎👍

James, I need some advice. I have 5 acres I built a house on, it’s heavily wooded with lots of larger rocks and a gravel driveway and paths. All of the guys who do excavation work around me are booked solid through winter. I’ve been thinking about getting a tractor and doing the maintenance/upkeep myself. What would you recommend for maintaining gravel driveway/paths, moving rocks and trees (I also do all of my own firewood) and potentially snow removal. My lot is pretty sloped and we get a ton of snow in the winter so 4x4 is a must enclosed cab would be nice but not absolutely required and I only have standard 8’ garage openings and wouldn’t necessarily have the ability to keep it inside year round.

Great video James there is definitely no perfect one piece of equipment. I run a tree care and landscape business and also Junk Removal and Dumpster rentals. So I got my hands into just about anything I can make money on. I have a Kubota L47 tlb tractor it's a great machine then I also have a Bobcat 553 and a S175 next for me I want to get a stand on mini skid. Like you kinda said no matter what piece of equipment you have you can always need something else. Same thing on truck and trailers

I started with the B26 but I agree. Starting with the L47 would be great, cheap on fuel, can do pretty much anything and is fairly affordable.
While it can be slower… you can do every job plus can do snow removal depending where you live. Plus implements are 3 to 4 times cheaper than a skidsteer one.
Also will add, a one man show you never lose money but may lose time. The ceiling is much lower but like no stress.

I’m upgrading my small dingo TX 525 and have to decide between a 2020 TX 1000 with 800 hours or a 2021 MT100 with 1800hrs. both the same price, which should I go with?

Hey. I'm looking to get into this type of work, starting my own business. I'm just curious if you could give me a direction on insurance? What type of policy to look for? A company you would recommend? I'm in Utah, so I won't be competing with you.
Each state is different I’d call your state licensing board and ask them what is required for whatever license you hold or are planning to hold. Obviously general liability/ equipment insurance is standard and we go through a broker for insurance so everything is bundled. Also no such thing as competition enough money to go around for everyone 😎👊👊 best of luck
Curious. Is there a reason you haven’t replaced the dump trailer? My equipment is for site prep for my own builds. I could not survive without a dump trailer. Kudo’s your making it work without one.
Honestly I would’ve bought one by now but josh tags along on jobs I need one. So he’s saving me money lol also the trailer I want decked out is like 35-40k.
