The Mask (2023) - Conner O'Malley and the Age of Reality Cinema

- With Conner O'Malley's The Mask (2023) we've got three movies to mix up. The Curse (2023) has turned out to be a fantastic piece of work and Nathan Fielder is doing some solid work, but I think The Mask may be the most profound piece of "reality cinema" to come out this year.
Here, Conner O'Malley employs his psychotic stream-of-consciousness filmmaking style to stick a point regarding hopeless Hollywood hopefuls and humanize the most deranged and delusional conspiracy theorists.
I hope things work out for Tyler Joseph.

SHMOOKKINNNNNN
"connor o malley is the Stanley Kubrick of the selfie stick" lmao
Kubrick
Where’s the lie
Conner's recent standup special was so good
fr
I would cry if Connor O'Malley got a show doing things like this
Me, too...tears of happiness.
He has one. I just want to know why PVC feces rig got taken down
'He's not this guy, but he knows this guy' is such a good way to put it.
Finally some Conner recognition. My favorite comedian of my time.
O'malley was also the head writer on Seth Meyers' show, so certainly not an industry outsider.
don't think he was head writer, just a writer.
as a wrestling fan, i feel so validated that someone compared this comedy/film making movement to 90s wrestling promos
thanks I needed the context because the mask 2023 was the first thing I saw from him, and actually thought it was real
Absolutely adore conner’s work. I hope safdie (well one of the safdies, since they’ve split up now), cast him in their movie. Also, Conner was one of the writers for How to with John Wilson’s season 2.
That opening joke absolutely killed me hahaha
A masterpiece. His best work yet. I've never felt so immersed in a youtube video before 🤟🔥🔥🔥
Hey man nice video, but it's "all intents and purposes". Don't let Tony Soprano teach you expressions
I should of known.
@@TheSuckoShow "have" known lol
@@mtroy0620I think that was deliberate but nice catch hahaha.
Goodly played.
lol the intensive purposes was on purpose and so was the should of
Do we know for sure if John Mayer wasn’t in on it
the mask was awesome. I couldn't keep my eyes off of it and I've never seen anything like it
Thanks for this man. The wrestling connection is brilliant.
Great vid. Big fan of Conner plus all the others mentioned. This vid had a very “how to with John Wilson” feel to it :)
“For all intensive purposes” is a common misspelling and mispronunciation of the correct phrase “for all intents and purposes”. The two phrases sound similar when spoken aloud, which can lead to mistakes. This type of mistake, where an incorrect word or phrase is used but the meaning remains the same, is known as an eggcorn.
great review. connor is such a comic genius and his vids are as madcap and unsettling as they are funny
Good stuff, keep up the great work!
Thanks, I really appreciate it.
the body is bad the body is not good
THE BODY IS BAD THE BODY IS NOT GOOOOD
Great analysis!
Great video I am something of a Connor fantatic myself :)
Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas
You too! 🎅
Great Connor reference!
conner is way too underrated
You're one of the first people to talk about this genre that I know 've. I think it's crazy that main stream media outlets never jump on to topics like this. You'd think they'd wanna be one of the first ones to talk about new and exciting things but no. Also I know on cinema isn't that new but it is to me
DUDE IT'S INSANE RIGHT???? I've been ITCHING to find the common ground amongst this style of comedy, I need to start making video essays lmao
Did you say, "That I know have" ironically?
been watching Conner for years he's the best, by far my favorite comedian.
2:06 "All intensive purposes"... Is this a reference to a deep cut Connor joke that I'm missing? 🤔
NICE VIDEO :)
Hell yeah pimp
Funny that you mention wrestling. Connor O'Malley reminds me of Andy Kaufman.
Id love to see him and Tim Robinson do something in AEW or WWE
Bring back the Irish Mob
I'm only half Irish.
smocking
Its for all intents and purposes. Not intensive purposes.
I should of known.
0:15 Don't forget Matt Johnson, he's been doing it since 2007. Nirvanna the Band the Show and The Dirties are masterpieces and blur reality with fiction better than anyone.
I'm not super familiar with him, I'll have to check it out.
@@TheSuckoShow Groundbreaking reality questioning work on Nirvanna the Band the Show and their gurrilla style movies. Another Canadian duo pushing the "wait is this real" envelope is Kenney vs Spenny, but that might be just real. And Show About a Show was honestly too much for me to watch
This is great and all, but have you ever read script for the movie “Joe Biden, Stock Market Man?” It’s ahead of our time, and stars all star Ben Diesel.
Connor o Mally = standley Kubrick
"For all intents and purposes", not "For all intensive purposes". Was this written by fucking Greg Kinnear?
I should of known
sounds like KENN wrote this
What phone/camera does Conner use to record? The audio is just so unbelievably good, compared to going out and trying to record outside on a normal smartphone. Like normally there's wind and unwanted noise but his is crystal. One vid he put a re-recording audio credit, like they redub the sound maybe. His technology use and editing is just so clean.
Edit: it kind of reminds me of Nathan for You, in that there is such little info on the production side of things. But I assume at minimum he tells people he's gonna be filming something for stuff like the SeaWorld incident
Did you say "all intensive purposes" ?
I couldn't of said that
He’s not schizophrenic or nothin. I just prefer to watch Ace Ventura(2023) instead.
Tim sucks now he got Sam Hyde cancelled
or maybe his show was just shit lmao
It seems to me his show was always going to be a live-hard-die-young kind of thing. People saying it was cancelled just because Sam Hyde's a suspected racist or whatever. Maybe. But you could remove all the political controversy and that show still wasn't built to last on television.
Yeah those shows only get like a season anyways. But Eric never got political so I think he's cool
