As a fellow liveaboard sailor, without as much experience as you guys, I just wanted to say thankyou for the video. It is great that nowadays you are showing the real life sail/boat handling via the head mounted Gopro. Gives a real sense of the sailing reality with all the necessary changes etc and an insight into your thinking behind each maneuver. Authentic and informative. I am based on the west coast of Scotland for this year and headed to the Faroes and Iceland next year. All the best and thanks!

Regardless of the reason it vibrates, we all know, or should realise, that constant vibration leads to various mechanisms which eventually cause failure and breakage of the vibrating part or those around it. I would not be happy with that either. If you were stuck motoring for days that part is going to get vibrated to hell....ie it can only reduce the part lifetime. Kind of puts me off getting a Hydrovane, although perhaps it emphasises another consideration with regard to where the unit is mounted. In line with the prop or further off to the side. It would be nice to hear an in depth technical response from Hydrovane on the matter.
Hydrovane wrote to me saying that the vibration was caused by the prop and that there would be more vibration at higher RPMs. They made a suggestion for how to minimize the vibration (tightening the rudder retention line onto a stern cleat), but I haven’t had a chance to try that yet (and honestly I’m a little skeptical). I think my particular installation is problematic because they made the shaft and upper posts much longer than they usually do, in an attempt to clear my stern arch (although the wind vane still hit the radar and all of my antennas and I had to do a lot of extra work to fix or at least minimize that). I still think I’m going to add some custom stainless tube supports to hold the upper post in place. But in the end if the thing steers well I’ll be thrilled. Looking forward to the first real shakedown.
Also, I do imagine that the vibration would be far less or even completely eliminated if the rudder were placed somewhere that’s not directly behind the prop..
Those were the good old days! :) When we made Season 1-5 and published at least once a week I don't think I ever worked so hard in my life. :) I think that video series is one my greatest achievements. :) Nowadays, we're trying to publish a new video at least every other week, and the format is different than the old days, making the editing easier to go through.

We loved using that coffee grinder for about 6 months, and it was really great during that time. But then it started becoming very difficult to turn the handle. I wasn't able to repair it, and the company that made it didn't respond to my email asking about it. So unfortunately I can't recommend it. I'm still using it, but I removed the handle, which was the part that failed, and I replaced it with my little Bosch battery powered drill. I used to be sv Adma. Last year I changed to mv Adma and converted her into a nice trawler. Kept the mizzen mast, but a but shorter with stability sail. 2.5 liters an hour and no hassle. Could you entertain that thought or does it make you cringe like it does for most of my sailing friends :-) ?
Well I do love sailing under sail more than anything... But we could also never afford (or even store) the amount of fuel we would need for some of our long distance passages. And fuel is so much more expensive outside of the USA. :(
@@drakeParagon I live in the Netherlands and the 500 liters i can carry make quite a dent in my budget. And yes coastal motoring for about a week and 1250km is all I can do.
Looked like a very effortful sail. Perhaps you have a bit of long Covid. Try high dose Vit D, Magnesium and Zinc with a little more rest. Should set you right. Looking forward to seeing Eanna on board again.
I found that even months after testing negative I was still affected by it. I found that if I worked really hard (like on a long passage) then after I would be way too exhausted. Way more than before. And it would take several days of rest to get back to full strength. But I think I'm finally through that and back to normal. I'm just scared to death of catching Covid a 2nd time..
Filming and editing is pretty time consuming.. After all the filming, can take 1 to 2 weeks to edit an episode. I could spend that week editing through the latest footage, but then I would have to skip over our story from earlier. I figure it’s better to tell a more complete, chronological story than skip over parts of what happened so that I could be more real time.
If we got hit by lightning then I do think it would knock out all of our electronics, and possibly cause a fire. Being far offshore in the middle of a lightning storm definitely ranks way up there on my list of scariest things.
Maintenance never ends. But I wouldn't be sailing her offshore if I wasn't confident in her condition. I think she's holding up pretty well, especially since she's 48 years old with several hundreds of thousands of miles under her keel.
:) I can't wait for that day when we are somewhere warm enough and have the time to paint the hull and deck! I last painted the topsides with Awlgrip Awlcraft 2000 in 2010(?) and it looked incredible for many years after that. But now she definitely needs to be repainted. Maybe when we got to Morocco.. ?
Really well edited . First time in a awhile that I have watched a sailing vid that reminded me of cruising....all the tweaking, re setting, etc etc. I don't have a windvane so I was wondering why you didn't use it more, especially as you were concerned about overworking the AP.

The vibration on the WV is from the prop.
That's what the folks from Hydrovane told us too. I'd still like to try to find the best ways to minimize it.

I always enjoy your videos even though I am more of a power boat guy. I am curious as to why your videos are so far behind real time?
Editing takes about an hour per minute of video.
