When I saw it I remember thinking that since she was an older ninja and Rin was just learning, maybe it had something to do with her feeling haunted by all the death she had dealt. That might explain why in Tenchu 4 she's wearing purple instead of her trademarked black & gray (or red).
@petrietri In one ending (Which you unlock by killing Ranzo.) there is a hand that is on Ayame's shoulder and as soon as she notices she takes her blades out and turns around. For a second. My theory that hand was Rikimaru's hand but, some doubt it
I'll have to play the game again. Ayame and Rin's stories connected, but it wasn't a perfect connection. Ayame in particular just seems to be along for the ride. My conclusion was based on Rin's seeming inability to become a true ninja through much of the game, but in Ayame she sees someone to look up to. Ayame's only connection to something real was Kiku's bell and she almost lost it.

@AngelOfMine223 I agree with you, when I unlocked that ending and saw the hand, the first name that came into my head was Rikimaru
This world is a place of sorrow and tragedy.
Yours is a world of ranks and castes...how true.
This is leading up to viewers on whose hand was it that touch Ayame's shoulder, but in my mind is Rikimaru not Tatsumaru.
The hand must be Rikimaru's hand. Since he mentioned that he scattered his shadows all over the land.
Ranzou: "You're not going anywhere! You're mine!" *Gets stabbed on the forehead* "Huuh?!"
Lolz, that's such a total pwnage XD

You can get by him without defeating him? Man it has been a long time since I played this. That ending was great drama though.
Some think that the hand belongs either to Rikimaru or Tatsumaru, since both come back in the next game: Wrath of Heaven/Return from Darkness.

Wasn't there another clip where someone grabs Ayame on her shoulder, she turns around, but no one is there? Or did I get a bad ending?
