    Ty Ty Tyyyyy! Bc you approve, I will give it a try. I am new at using chalk paint and it sure is pricey. My Hubby bought me an 8oz bottle for $10! You can just imagine the cost of the gallon size (I think it was around $65!!!) So, if I wanted to paint my table, my measly 8oz jar of chalk paint won't do it. I actually found a way to make my own chalk paint using limestone (making it with plaster of paris is NOT recommended by many here on TH-cam - too clumpy and a short shelf-life) And here I am finding the wax! I am in awe at the creativity of TH-camrs ;) Tfs!

    • @NashvilleRestoration
      @NashvilleRestoration  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I will have to check out the limestone. I use homemade chalk paint most days and I make it with plaster of paris. I have a kitchen mixer I got a the thrift store for a couple dollars that I dedicated to chalk paint so I don't have lumps. I only mix what a project will use so I have no shelf life worries. I also get my paint from the mismatched paint section so I pay $1 per quart for it here at Habitat for Humanity. Lowes and Home Depot sell theirs for about $5 per quart. FYI Dollar Tree sells baby oil for $1 for a huge bottle.

    I wouldn't be surprised if years and years ago they did their furniture waxes pretty much the same. I have a 200 year old oak child's rocker. I know my grandfather waxed it for the final finish. You can scape it off with your fingernail. They didn't have Martha Stewart or Minwax back in those years. I need to make some veneer repairs on this little rocker (because my mom ripped off the loose veneer), and I will be using wax for the final finish just like grandpa did. I will need to do some experimenting with the color of stain I end up using. I saw a video about using black tea. That is definitely going to be an option, and I am patient enough to experiment with that too. I bought brown oak veneer because that oak was used for furniture back then. I also have one of the arms of the rocker has come loose so I need to repair that also. It's going to be a satisfying project and it is a family heirloom.

    • @NashvilleRestoration
      @NashvilleRestoration  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree. I think it was mostly beeswax long ago and it was probably beeswax mixed with any oil that was available but in reality there were probably things used we would never think of. I have heard of black tea making a nice stain on unfinished wood. There are so many ways to do this stuff it is a lot of fun experimenting. Good luck on your project it sounds like it will be awesome!

    • @Laurieb2851
      @Laurieb2851 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am a little nervous about the arm repair. It is actually disconnected from the rest of the rocker with the screw intact. It's very possible just the glue will be enough if I clamp it well and get enough glue in there.
      TH-cam is a wealth of info and I just might run across some good suggestions. I ran across a video that showed the best way of repairing veneer. I would never stay away from a potential because of missing veneer anymore. I found an eBay store that sells nothing but wood veneer. I wish they sold wider pieces because I have a door that needs oak veneer. I've asked, so maybe they do have wider pieces from time to time.

      The things our parents did in the name of what was in. I have a old rocker that was my grandmothers, it is cherry wood with carved swan head arms. in the 70's my mom pained it glossy black and reupholstered it with black velvet. Even she say's "what was I thinking!" I had it redone (before my DIY days) and stripped the paint and had it stained natural then had new Toile fabric put on. It's in need of some TLC again (fabric arms are getting thin). But its still beautiful.

      @penelope5534 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@shellydianenovascotia3914 I just added a little brown paint to the wax. It will stay in the recesses, but the high points, it will buff right off. I want to say that I used about a 1/2 teaspoon of paint, but start there and add if it isn't dark enough.

      @@penelope5534 So kind of like antique glazing? Is the wax easier to manipulate?

    • @penelope5534
      @penelope5534 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@creativegirl9710 If we're talking about the same glaze that is a liquid, I would say that you have more control with the wax. You can cover the whole piece with clear wax first, then use a colored wax. That way you can wipe it back easier if you think it's too much. With glaze, you would want to keep the surface horizontal, but with wax you don't need to do that because it won't drip. I highly recommend using the baby oil instead of mineral oil because it smells nice. When adding paint, the wax will need to be warm and not solidified yet. The more baby oil/mineral you add to the wax the less hard it will be when cooled. I had to play around with the amounts. Hope this helps.

      I have not tried other oils but I think some of them would be fine. Vegetable oil may be my last choice though, just from personal experience of it getting gunky/funky when cooking and it is very thick. I think you may end up with an oily mess that is hard to clean the excess off your project. I would another natural oil that was not thick but I have no idea how it would turn out or which would be best.

    • @NashvilleRestoration

    Hi Wendy. Considering making this but I was wondering if this gives an even finish as it looks like it goes on evenly in the video (I hate the blochy wax look)? How many coats do you do when using wax? How long for the wax to dry and how long until it's fully cured? Thanks heaps. Keeps the great videos coming.

    • @NashvilleRestoration

      The even finish comes when you wipe the excess wax off, just as with any wax. It should be dry enough to handle in 24 hours and cured in 30 days. I have another recipe up with carnauba wax which I recommend for higher traffic furniture.

    Love the idea, and so inexpensive. I wan to restore a sofa and paint the fabric with chalk paint, would that wax work as a saeler or would it stay oily on the fabric, do you know?

    • @NashvilleRestoration
      @NashvilleRestoration  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      People definitely use the wax on fabric. I did a test with chalk paint on upholstery and the chalk paint passed with flying colors for not rubbing off as did the wax. The wax however is not recommended for outdoor furniture and heat is the reason I saw for not using it outdoors. This tells me that I don't want to use it indoors either because if it gets hot from temperature or a hot butt, it makes it sound like it could come off. I have sealed chalk painted furniture with scotch guard with great success and given the choice, I would choose scotch guard. There are also sprays for sealing leather that I would consider using. Leather sealing sprays are meant to keep dye off clothing so I think it would be a good choice for fabric. Please let me know what happens!

    Hi first timer love your product going to be chalk painting my grandmas mid century dining room table with a homemade chalk paint do you think it will hold the paint on with no problem thank you

    • @NashvilleRestoration
      @NashvilleRestoration  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always lightly sand before chalk paint in everything but definitely a dining table. Scuff sanding, or removing the shine, does not take any longer than cleaning it. The reason is that dirt or oils can be deep enough in wood to not come out with cleaning. If I scuff sand it, I am guaranteed that all the old gunk is gone, especially if the table has been waxed. The less shiny the surface the better the paint will hold.
      My first choice to seal dining room tables is brush on polyurethane and my second is brush on Polycrylic (water based). Dining tables are the only things that I recommend Polyurethane first. It is the most durable go the finishes in my opinion and is needed for constant wiping and use of the table. If you really want to use wax, I would go with Annie Sloan ($25) or Minwax Paste Wax ($9) for this. If you use white paint, Minwax Paste Wax will make a stark white into a light antique white but other than white, I can't tell a difference with the Minwax Paste Wax tan tint. If you want to use a homemade wax, I would use my recipe with Carnuba in it. I recommend my carnauba wax for everything but a high use dining table, unless you will have light use of the table and then it would be fine. th-cam.com/video/W_hMUNwVDxQ/w-d-xo.html

    • @NashvilleRestoration
      @NashvilleRestoration  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      You can add wood stain to the wax after it comes off the stove. Let it cool a few minutes first, it is hot oil.and dangerous. I would take a small amount of the wax out of the jar, mix in a few drops of the the stain and test it on a piece of wood painted the same as your furniture. From there, you can determine how much stain to add to the rest of the wax. To make dark wax, you can re-heat your wax in the pan of water, add stain and cool as instructed in the video.

      I personally at this point prefer to use latex satin finish paint on fabric. It doesn't need a sealer (wax) and it is a lot cheaper. One of the reasons is that not all fabric works well with the wax. If you have a non textured fabric that is not velvet or velour, it is fine. I also don't trust wax for something warm bodies sit on. (I know a lot of people may disagree with that). I also like latex paint because you can drastically change colors and paint prints by using a primer first. I made a video about it. Here is the link. Please let us know what you do and how you like it. Thank you! Wendi th-cam.com/video/WWfCSY1PwZY/w-d-xo.html

    Tfs.Do you have to continue to treat the table with wax for maintenance or is just used after painting?

    • @NashvilleRestoration
      @NashvilleRestoration  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes all waxes have to be used over and over although I am not sure on the time frame. Wax has a beautiful look but it does take maintenance. Polycrylic or Polyurethane lasts a lot longer with no maintenence. I use satin finish in both of these and I love them. I am using them much more than wax now. It is so much faster, especially with spray cans. The spray cans take a few coats but it works great.

    After watching this video I followed up with your 7 Ways to seal chalk paint, and you mentioned baby oil has mineral oil in it. My question is what is the difference with just baby oil versus the beeswax formula?

    • @NashvilleRestoration
      @NashvilleRestoration  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mineral oil is pretty light by itself. I used it on my "Fake Chalk Paint" videos. I think the beeswax adds a thicker layer of protection and I suspect the mineral oil/ baby oil would wear away faster than a wax. However, if I had a piece of furniture that would not get wear and tear, drinks set on it, etc., I might use baby oil. It does seal the paint but not as well as wax.

    • @NashvilleRestoration
      @NashvilleRestoration  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am sure you know not to wax the outdoor furniture. It melts in the sun. Best to seal wth polyurethane or polycrylic. If I can find some iron furniture, I will certainly paint it! Most important is removing rust before painting. There is a wonderful product called Ospho made by Sherwin Williams that you spray on, wait a few minutes then paint. That is my favorite rust removal product. If there is an rust on the furniture, paint will bring it out even more and sealing it won’t stop the rust progression. Kind of like when they bondo a car and rust comes up through the bondo. It’s because they didn’t get the rust out first. Rust grows like weeds.

    • @NashvilleRestoration
      @NashvilleRestoration  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      According to Annie Sloan, who is the leader in chalk paint, you can paint over pretty much anything with chalk paint. If I were doing it, I would use a strong degreaser and get as much wax off as possible and probably scuff sand it. It is still very fast and easy to re-paint, even with scuff sanding.

      It is just as durable as a lot of waxes but depending on what your use is for your furniture, a different finish may be better. For high traffic pieces like dining room tables or kids furniture, I would always use polycrylic, polyurethane or danish oil.

    • @NashvilleRestoration

      I have heard that it indeed does just that. I have not done it yet myself. I would add the paint in while the wax is cooling, before it solidifies so you can shake it with the wax. I also recommend trying a small amount first and see how you like it. If you already have made your wax, you can re-heat the wax to melt it and then add paint. Please let us know how it turns out!

    Is parafin wax the same thing as white bees wax? My Michael’s doesn’t have white bees wax.

    • @NashvilleRestoration
      @NashvilleRestoration  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Beeswax is natural and comes from bees. Paraffin is a by product of coal, oil shale or petroleum. I have heard paraffin Wax works fine and people have used this recipe with soy wax as well, but I have not tried it myself. The function of wax in chalk paint is to penetrate it to make it water and stain resistant. Pretty much any oil or wax has the ability to do that. I do not know if paraffin makes a thicker or thinner wax than the beeswax, but it should work. IIf the wax is too thick, it is easy to add more baby oil or mineral oil. If is too thin, you will probably have to heat it on the stove to add more wax. My guess iis that paraffin will be thicker than beeswax, but that is only a guess. I have ordered my white beeswax off eBay and Amazon. I don’t think I can find it locally either. Please let us know how it turns out so we have more information for the next person who asks. Thank you! Wendi

      @@boymomlxx781 I have not. I personally would not put wax on fabric. I just watched an Annie Sloan video about chalk paint on fabric and she said the wax makes it looks like leather, which means if you chalk paint fabric, it will either be unprotected if it’s not sealed and show stains easily or look like leather. I am posting a video later this week where I used latex satin paint on fabric. I think if a i was going to paint fabric, I would use the latex paint instead of chalk paint or to with upholstery dye or paint. This wax recipe would however act like store bought wax on furniture.

    what would you add to make a dark wax?

    • @NashvilleRestoration
      @NashvilleRestoration  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have seen latex paint, chalk paint and wood stain added. I have used latex and chalk paint myself. Wood stain does not exactly dry all the way when you use it. I think the oil base in stains would not dry in the wax. I saw a youtube video that confirmed this.
      You can add paint when the wax is not solid yet while it is cooling. I have done it with solidified wax as well. I would suggest trying a couple tablespoons of wax, maybe left in the sun for a while, on a hot stove surface (not a burner) or by a fireplace. Add a little paint to it and see how it looks. It is also best to try new things on sample boards so paint up an old piece of wood of anything paint worthy and try out your dark wax sample. Write back and let us know how it goes!

    • @NashvilleRestoration
      @NashvilleRestoration  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would add an oil based minwax stain. I think that would work great. Just add a little at a time to a small sample of your wax and test it on a piece of wood. Easist way to know if you like it and want to make adjustments.

    I'm very new to this chalk paint wax thing. I made some of this and mine was NOT runny after it cooled, though I was still able to brush it on. I applied it to my test piece a few days ago and buffed it in as went. Now, 3-4 days later, when I run my hand over the finished piece I can see some product on my fingers, like a very slight sheen. Is this normal? How do you know its "cured/dried"?

    • @NashvilleRestoration
      @NashvilleRestoration  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You always have to wipe the excess off with soft wax. I would do that now and check back in a few days and you should be fine. Wax like this or a commercial soft wax are not the same as a hard sealer like polyurethane. If you scratch polyurethane, you would have to sand down and re-do the poly to fix it. If you scratch soft wasx, which is much easier to scratch than poly, you only need apply more wax. Wax is made for surfaces that do not deal with moisture so a dining room table is not good for wax, but polyurethane or polycrylic will work. Also, this does not stay liquid when it cools. So far as I know, other than a liquid wax Heirloom Traditions sells, none of them are liquid, they are kind of a soft paste, but you can still brush or rub them on. I usually rub mine on with a rag since it's faster and I feel like I get it in the cracks well and it is excellent skin moisturizer. I remove the excess wax with a dry cotton cloth right away in usually find what I have missed a few days later in the cracks or under the edges. Soft waxed were the first waxes and you will find them on lots of antiques, which is why they look and feel soft with the polyurethand hard surface glossy look. I hope this helps!
