Civ 5 AI Only Timelapse: Crossroads of History

  • Center of this map is open to attack from four directions making snowball strategy a lot harder, but also center contains colossal amounts of strategic resources of all types, so with huge risks whoever controlling it gaining significant production bonuses as well as the opportunity to choose the direction for his own attack. Needless to say, when someone conquers his home region, it is only the beginning of a thorny path to victory, which is formed by combining of diplomacy, science, economics and the military strength in right proportions. All the final superpowers will have a great history behind them, but which empire will be the greatest and stand the ultimate test of time will be decided only in the battle of crossroads.
    I used Community Patch (global modification of AI and bug fix) forums.civfana... and Terrain Texture Enhancement 2k forums.civfana... for this battle.

    yeah it's definitely Maya who everybody predicted to win at this stage, totally not France which had four times higher population and seven times more cities

    This is the first time I've seen a nation get invaded by one of the major powers (Maya v China @ 5:15) and begin to lose momentum, but somehow push the major power out and maintain a stalemate, going on to win the game.
    Really, well done Maya.
    The West had an enjoyable and quick early-game. England and Germany formed an early alliance; with both nations have 2 cities each, they were the favorites to win, and any nation competing against them would have a tough time. China took the challenge, and managed to hold out against the alliance in several wars, drawing them out to a stalemate that forced a temporary peace. That is, until Akkad was besieged and taken @ 1:33 during a brief interm peace with the alliance. This ended up tipping the scales in China's favor, as neither of the individual nations that made up the alliance had 3 cities (Germany had failed to conquer Thebes since they didn't have English help, that likely is what could have turned this around). With the widening technological gap between the two sides (China and England had muskets while Germany had medieval infantry still), and the greater production that China enjoyed over England with their 3 cities, Hamburg was taken @ 2:10. From there, it's just a matter of cleaning up the remains of the England-Germany alliance as the technological and military gap only grows. (Note, Osininka is taken @ 2:50. This is what ends up causing the future French-Chinese wars)
    The North was fairly straightforward in the rise of France - they got that early expansion around Warsaw and aggressively expanded over their side, securing more land than the Aztecs and beating them.
    The South was a bit of a surprise; Russia, with their land coverage and Persian alliance, was looking to become top dog, but with the Inca sneaking under the mountains and sniping Persia @ 3:48, along with Japan helping the Inca against Russia @ 4:15 & 4:50 (not to mention the Inca's edge in the quality of their units vs Russia's and their highly developed cities compared to Russia's) ended up proving too much for the Russian Empire to bear. This sector really was an underdog story, and without Japan's help, Russia would likely have eventually overrun the Inca's defense.
    The East, just like the South, was slow in their unification; The Mayans were the obvious favorite to secure their side, since they had the technological edge, plus their centralised location at the top of their sector with the large amount of land they already had meant they could easily defeat their northern neighbors. The other local powers - Japan and Brazil - were either too spread out to effectively coordinate their troops (Japan), or just too idle to bother doing anything (Brazil, though they helped Japan out in a few wars in the early game, they didn't join war any other wars). The defining conflict of the East was when the Mayans declared war on the joint Japanese-Brazilian alliance, though the vulnerability of Kyoto and Tokyo, along with the wars in Osaka, spread the Japanese army thin and left their core cities defenseless, while the Brazilian army, though briefly able to push the Mayans back, just wasn't able to cope with the rapid technological advancements the Mayans enjoyed.
    Taking a look at the big picture, there were 2 major things that played key roles in deciding the winner of this game: The constant wars between France and China (the earliest victors of their respective arenas), which distracted their militaries and bought extra, valuable time for the other half of the map to consolidate, and, more importantly, the fact that the Japanese settled their 3rd city right smack dab on the Uranium deposit in the center of the map @ 0:30. This city became THE most crucial strategic point to control in the entire game; it was, quite literally, the gateway to the rest of the world. Nobody could move past their sector until they took that city, and it wasn't until 5:00 (nearly 700 turns into the game) that China finally annexed it, immediately moving into the East @ 5:13 to rack up momentum and win the game, but by this point, the city held out for so long that the East was already unified under the Mayans; while the Chinese were constantly trying to besiege and move past Osaka, the Mayans and Inca were slowly conquering their sides, and by the time the city fell, and the gates were open, and the Chinese war machine rolled on through the ruins and resources, the East had become unified under a technologically advanced civilization who not only managed to check and contain the Chinese invasion, securing Tokyo from the initial attack, and preventing the outbreak @ 5:22 from reaching the core capitals, but also managed to retake Pasargadae as the Inca joined the fight and distracted the Chinese army.
    From here on, it's pretty straightforward - everyone makes a dash for Osaka, with France being the one leading the charge. At 6:00 shit starts to hit the fan for France; with a crippled air force, and a capital that was constantly under attack from bombers (compared to the Mayan capital untouched by the war), along with an army that gets immediately sent to the front lines to die instead of building reserves, the French are left with a timer on their survival, and by this point it becomes a desperate struggle to hold the lines with nothing but a small force, holding against the endless onslaught brought on by the combined might of the other 3 powers, constantly spread thin and slowly being worn down until someone strikes the decisive blow. As the Mayans military production continuously ramps up and the worn out French army gets destroyed in Osaka @ 6:18 with their desperate fallback line to halt the Mayan advance @ 6:22 being easily swept aside, the game gets their winner; the Mayans mop up the rest of the French Empire, move onto the Inca (who finally got around to killing Persia in turn 814), and, after a peace that lasts almost a millennium, launch a decisive invasion of China using Death Robots.
    If France would have kept out of Osaka, and let China and the Mayans war each other over the city like they had been doing, they likely would've stood a better chance of winning, but who knows.
    Great game, and an enjoyable af timelapse!

    The AI makes no sense.

    • @Gelondil
      @Gelondil 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'd say it makes sense to me. When France declared war on Maya in 2172, there were no Incan GDRs (the first one appears in 2177) and Maya was losing ground in a bloody war with China. On paper, it looks like a winnable fight. The problem is, the Incas jumped in at the same time and pushed China out, leaving France fighting Maya alone. And by then Maya had total air superiority and far better resources than any other single civ.
      What France *should* have done was go on the offensive 2160 when China did, if not a half century earlier when they had technological advantage. Then they could have snagged Tokyo and some strategic resources before the Mayan Air Force was a thing, and before the Incas were ready to help.
