Little White chick with an acoustic guitar Toe to toe with one of the best Black choirs ever. And rocking it. Look at the cuts to Edwin on piano, He knew they killed it altogether! Great collaboration for sure!
Janis Joplin was heel groot. R.i.P Melanie Safka. Je hebt iets groots neer gezet wat generaties nog van genieten en steun geeft in moeilijke en zware tijden.😢😢😢.
This song was recorded live in The Netherlands where my parents are from. I understand everything the host is saying. Using the Edwin Hawkins singers to back her up was genious. This song was so compelling.
The honest days of music. No auto tune. True voice, true passion. Might be off pitch, but I'll take it over today's fake stuff anyway. Made you feel something.
Rest In Peace, Melanie Safka. Maman was a tween when you recorded this classic in 1970. She says you are a worthy successor to Tina Tuner spiritually and vocally with your own unique power and timeliness. All the rain today was cheers greeting you in Heaven!
We were so close, there was no room We bled inside each other's wounds We all had caught the same disease And we all sang the songs of peace Some came to sing, some came to pray Some came to keep the dark away So, raise the candles high (Up high) 'Cause if you don't, we could stay black against the sky Oh, oh, raise (Raise) them higher again (Up high) And if you do we could stay dry against the rain Lay down, lay down, lay it all down Let your white birds smile up at the ones who stand and frown
Melanie didn't mention it in the interview clip, but she performed at Woodstock. Basically she'd been booked to play but not at the time she actually played. It was pouring with rain, and no other of the booked artists would play, so she volunteered to take to the stage. Candles In The Rain was inspired by the event.
I knew you would comment on that hair!😂 For real. My momma too. I LOVE and LOVED this song. We had really great music while I was growing up in the 60’s and 70’s!❤
this was 1970 in the Netherlands. even the older crowd were groovin' by the end. i was a freshman in high school when this happened. she has such a unique voice.
You have to remember too this was during the time that blacks and white collaborating was frown upon by some. People like her helped to change the world for a better place!
I remember Melanie's songs growing up in the 70's. She had hits such as "Brand New Key", "Ruby Tuesday", "What Have They Done To My Song Ma", "Beautiful People", "Ring The Living Bell", "The Nickel Song", "Bitter Bad", "Together Alone", "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" etc. "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)" was inspired by her experience of performing at the 1969 Woodstock music festival.
The crowd, forgive if I'm wrong, think they're an Irish audience?, Welsh?,..they listen to Celtic songs, which can be very emotional, moving,.especially when done by quartets, groups of more, it's a choir like feel, so this, this is an American choir version, it's a little different, but you still get that emotion, that spiritual feeling,..this is them being very moved, and touched by the performance, trust me,..saw older women smiling, as they clapped, they totally appreciated the performance, the strength and fervor of it,..they were moved,..as I am every time I hear this,..it just goes right through you, as the people say in church, the holy ghost, just hits you,..this is so a spiritual song and performance, so glad footage like this, songs have survived and are still here for you young people, and artists like Melanie walked the Earth,..Rip, Godspeed, Peace ✌
It is hard to relate to the words if you did not live through this period in American history , if you did this song can bring tears and fond memories , an all time great.
This is one of my favourite songs of all time. I remember when it first came out, it was amazing. Melanie's voice is wonderful. She had some other wonderful songs as well, including Brand New Key and a great cover of the Rolling Stones Ruby Tuesday.
This was the first song I ever loved in this life! I was 6 in 1970.I couldn’t walk, but when I heard Melanie’s vibrato,I felt like I could fly! Thank you for the beautiful musical memories,Melanie,Edwin Hawkins and the choir! Blessed be!
I'm so glad to find this, and happy to see your reaction. I had the pleasure of interviewing Melanie Safka after a concert about a dozen years ago. She's deeply mesmerizing, as both a performer and a person.
Some things to consider regarding the audience reaction. This was something very different for them in this time period- 1970. And in the Netherlands I believe so language also a factor. They were not a concert crowd but an older audience there for this talk show that Melanie happened to appear on. Given the time period, language difference etc I thought they responded well.
About the audience: The clip was from a Dutch TV show where, at the time, the audience was asked (before the taping) to sit quietly & clap when asked to. It was just normal for them. I hear it was similar for German music shows.
As for the crowd, they were in the Netherlands, and a lot of those older folks had been thru the war. Suits and dresses was the rule of the day. I remember my aunts and uncles dressing up like that for family gatherings. So it was the times. Stoic faces, but at least they are clapping along.
Not everyone has a " pitch perfect " voice. If all singers did it would be boringto listen to. Important in opera only! Great pop/ rock/ r&b & jazz have unique qualities. You focus too much on " vocaling".. whatever that means! Melanie was one of the great ones! And this performance was outstanding!
Seems like a song for the ages then and now, "We all caught the same disease" The HIV years, the Horrible COVID epidemic, "Beautiful People" is another great song of hers, she was probably an influence on Stevie Nicks as well, RIP Melanie
She wrote the bloody song. How can you criticize her voice. This annoys me no end. Seems you went into this wanting to hate it. And thats what you did.
Totally with you on this reaction. This is Dorothy Morrison who was one of the key members of the Edwin Hawkins gospel choir (who were awesome in a million ways): th-cam.com/video/XPN3L_IFMQQ/w-d-xo.html

Melanie was a very spiritual person! She basically was saying we all need to help keep each other's candles of peace lit. RIP sweet angel
❤ Love Melanie and her Spirit Forever!!!
Give credit where its due, she belted that out sitting down.
The honest days of music. No auto tune. True voice, true passion.
Might be off pitch, but I'll take it over today's fake stuff anyway. Made you feel something.
AMEN ❤
Melanie is one of a kind. She has that quavery little voice, and then she effortlessly blows the roof off the place.

I have 17 albums of Melanie ❤
Huge influence on life and how I found beautiful guidance in her lyrics to this very day !! ❤❤

Beautiful People by Melanie is one of the best songs I've ever heard in my life.
Her voice, oh my god

It was pouring with rain, and no other of the booked artists would play, so she volunteered to take to the stage. Candles In The Rain was inspired by the event.
Interviewer fumbled the obvious follow up question.
Her pitch is actually spot on. I think the sound quality is the problem.
This song makes me cry with emotion. The extended Edwin Hawkin Singers part are just fabulous.
I knew you would comment on that hair!😂 For real. My momma too. I LOVE and LOVED this song. We had really great music while I was growing up in the 60’s and 70’s!❤
Loved her then. What a voice. RIP Melanie.
❤ Love her Still. And Forever!

I am so glad you liked her at the end. I have loved her all my life. :-)

Melanie’s pitch was perfection. RIP sweet gifted Melanie. Your legacy of hope and love will live on!

Don't you criticize Melanie, she sounded just as she intended, educate yourself man.
Are you kidding me are you tone deaf ? She has a fantastic voice lets hear you do it. One of the top voices of the 60's and 70's.

For his 2016 album "Freckled Angels", Ren sampled Melanie's song "Do You Believe" for his own song also called "Do you believe".
Many of the audience does not understand English and if your in an audience you've been warned not to get to crazy
Melanie is Perfect Pitch ...
1970 great near for music. The music of day always had messages.
Man, did you miss this one. Her vocals were crazy good; and the song was an ANTHEM for the times, apparently before you were born..BOO to you..
Rest In Peace Melanie ❤
RIP lovely lady ❤❤

Please listen to this song. It's called I'll Stand By You by The Pretenders
Love your commentary and reactions. I love this song...a classic.
It was recorded in Sweden. Folks there are very reserved...
RIP Melanie Anne Safka PEACE

I hear Cyndi Lauper in Melanie's voice.
Melanie's full name is Melanie Safka.
There are better recordings of this song by Melanie out there.
Whats with the video screen.

woodstock look it up my friend.
She wrote the bloody song. How can you criticize her voice. This annoys me no end. Seems you went into this wanting to hate it. And thats what you did.
I think her vocals are absolutely perfect for this song, if this was sang in a perfect pitch it would sound like Pat Boone singing Little Richard.
Totally with you on this reaction. This is Dorothy Morrison who was one of the key members of the Edwin Hawkins gospel choir (who were awesome in a million ways): th-cam.com/video/XPN3L_IFMQQ/w-d-xo.html
...stale crowd😆😆. Yep, good reaction...☝️✨🤓
Hey, women worked for hours on their hair back then. I would bet there are no wigs going on here. I can still smell the hot combs.
Can you do a reaction to an Aussie band/song: The Teskey Brothers - Rain | A COLORS SHOW
His voice is just unreal and so unique
A
Yo you gonna react to NF's new album?
I am a 70 year old white male, lol , look at the crowd 60 & 70 year old people from 1970! Totally different and no rhythm. lol
You interrupt way too much and don't allow the flow of her voice or the song to flow. Just let her and the EH Singers do their thing and then react!
omegle bars 86 & TNT show & Harry Mack remembered 14 words ❤🔥❤🔥💯❤🔥❤🔥🤴 guerrilla bars 33 hey man 💥💥💥💥
