      omg SET MATTE just when I thought I had it figured out, it stops working. Hopefully when the new set alpha layer feature gets added to AE, Set Matte can be moved to the OBSOLETE fx folder.

    Collapse transformations can be specially frustrating when you have that cool character animation but need it to be bigger. "Well I should just hit this STAR button and my vectors will look lovely" - one might think. Fell for that a lot when I was a beginner lol.
    The collapse transformations button is the #1 cause of problem in rookie projects. Thanks for putting this video out, Jake.

      So how do you solve this Scale problem now?

    • @leomazzei2176

      It's not possible all of the time, but I try to plan animations ahead so I make assets the proper size depending on the action I want to animate.

    That was a nice explanation of 3D precomps behaviour after collapsing transformations, thanks!

    Yet, i've been using ae for more than 23 years and I still Wonder why Adobe keeps the rasterization compulsary for ai files. What is thé point ? So far as i know, if we use a vector file, it's precisely because it''s supposed not to behave as a bitmap layer. It makes no sense to me to keep this feature compulsary.
    Maybe you know why 😉

    Very nice explained, but I didn't find a solution for my issue.
    In a Pre-Comp I have a ton of shape layers with some intricated small animations. One of my shape layers - a Circle with gradient - using a the Mirror Effect, to simulate a swipe animation from its center and radially. My issue is: I want to switch the Collapse Transformations, to get all my elements crisp/sharp, it works, but the Mirror Effect is completely off.
    And I can't use the efx outside or on the pre-comp like Jake, you did with the gradient in the tutorial. If I don't toggle on the Star (Collapse T.) the Mirror effect works fine, but all the shapes are blurry. If I switch on the star, it's sharp, but some effects like the Mirror effect or the Wipe efx doesn't work properly.
    Is there a solution for that kind of issue?
    The pre-comp is to enlarge/scale all my animation with a ton of layers inside with several matte/mask layers. (so I can't resize all of them inside the pre-comp).

    • @gimmme5ive
      @gimmme5ive ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't find THE solution, perhaps it's because there is NO solution ...
      so that the effects within a comp (that we are trying to resize) can be valid while activating "Collapse Transformation".
      However I found an intermediate solution, for my needs, which is not optimal, but which can help in many cases, and saves time - yesterday I tried to control all shape layers/effects from one or several controllers to enlarge/scale their respective sizes... results: the interstellar chaos :D It didn't work 100%, perhaps only 95% of my stuff was ok, but the remaining 5% was a pain in the ass.
      I had to rework some animations managed by expressions -and I'm a noob-in short, absolute mess and a waste of time for me.
      So here we go for my intermediate solution, a script available in AE... never seen before.
      1/ Check before the size of the compisition you need to scale in "Composition Settings" (cmd+K / Ctrl+K), enter nothing in value, press Cancel.
      2/Then: FILE > Scripts > Scale composition ...
      3/Choose between "New Comp Width" or "New Comp Height", enter the desired value.
      4/ Click on the "Scale" button.
      Return to the "Composition Settings" Cmd+K, check that the values have been updated, then validate.
      And Boom, there you go, a easy peasy solution to scale up very fast.
      I hope this helps.

    • @JakeInMotion

      If you don't have a camera, AE will just display using the default camera. But it doesn't matter what's inside the precomp if you're collapsing the transformations in another comp.

  • @Animace

    Why I cannot continuously rasterize vector artwork with Puppet PIN tool effect?

    • @JakeInMotion
      @JakeInMotion  ปีที่แล้ว

      Because of the way that AE handles vector artwork. The puppet tool cannot scale its mesh infinitely the way vectors can. Instead, precomp your artwork layers at a high resolution before using the puppet tool.

    I've also noticed that layer blending modes like Multiply that are applied to a layer in a precomp don't work in the main timeline unless you apply Collapse Transformations. I have no idea what the logic is there.

    • @JakeInMotion
      @JakeInMotion  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's just the order of rendering. Blend modes are rendered within precomps, not outside of them, unless you collapse the transformations. Then the blend modes are rendered in the comp they're nested within.

    If you add the expression toComp(value) to the Start of Ramp and End of Ramp settings on the Gradient Ramp setting then they will stick to the comp when scaled or moved around. You did another tutorial about comp spaces so I was wondering if the expressions you did in that tutorial would do the same thing?

    Oten ran into problems with e.g. Roughen Edges or Turbulent Displacement. One really has to learn and know what effect you are going for and whether to put it in the PreComp, leave it outside, collapse transformations or not...I feel like even if you know how this button works in theory, until you encouter a real life problem you'll only be able to understand it so far.

    I had some paths inside a pre-comp that I was drawing on with trim paths and they had roughen edges applied to them. I wanted to have continuously rasterize on the pre-comp, but whenever the trim path percentage changed, it seemed that the seed for the roughen effect changed as well, making the edge 'roughening' move around weirdly 🤔

    Thank you for this video! It showed me a few things I hadn't really thought of with the collapse transformation button. I do have an issue when I use the set matte effect (which I use alllllll the time) where if I have that effect applied in a precomp, it will behave strangely. Usually, the layer I'm using as a matte won't appear to be in the correct position no matter what I do

    • @brynocerouss
      @brynocerouss ปีที่แล้ว

      It seems like the matte's location becomes relative to the composition the precomp is placed in, where the other shape will follow the anchor point of the precomp.
      I just tried this with a simple 500x500 precomp with two shape layers placed inside of a 1920x1080 comp. The matte shape layer was bouncing from one side of the precomp to the other, and the mattes location in the main comp goes for [50, 250] to [450, 250] relative to the 1920x1080 comp, while the other shape is stuck to the anchor point of the precomp.
