  • Join Colin and I as we visit the Munros around the fantastic Loch Ossian.
Loch Ossian youth hostel sits on the southern shore of Loch Ossian and is the perfect place to stay if you’re looking to get away from it all. Loch Ossian is hugely popular with walkers and outdoor enthusiast looking to explore and enjoy the remote wilderness of Rannoch Moor.
Accommodation at the hostel is in male and female specific dorms, but groups and families have the option of booking a dorm for exclusive use. The hostel has a fully equipped self-catering kitchen, with fridge, and basic provisions, snacks and ready meals are available to purchase. Drying is available on two overhead racks and boot stands by the fire - the perfect place to relax after a day on the hills.
Guests can enjoy a welcome hot shower, thanks to the development of locally sourced hydro power complimenting the micro generated solar power supply. There’s also electric panel heating throughout and all bed linen is provided, so no need for sleep sheets or sleeping bags. Other green initiatives include composting toilets, a reed bed grey water drainage system - and even bat-friendly paint!
Loch Ossian Youth Hostel is only accessible by rail, bike or foot. Corrour railway station (Glasgow to Fort William line) is the highest mainline railway station in the UK and the hostel is a short, approximately 20 minute walk from the station along a well-made track.
In extreme weather the hostel normally remains open during the day.
The hostel is also available for exclusive private rental.

Many years ago, we did Càrn Dearg and Sgòr Gaibhre from Loch Eigheach near Rannoch Station. It was a fabulous and easy walk until we descended to try to find the footpath near the Allt Eigheach. It was a bogfest and, try as we might, we found no trace of a footpath. It would have been much easier to retrace our outbound route.

My gut at the top of the second munro was to retrace my steps! I totally agree the last part for us was a slog!! I was warned though so no one to blame but myself!!! If I every go back.......

Maybe pretty easy in Munro terms, but Beinn na Lap was an enjoyably different experience because of the train element. There was a nice friendly atmosphere as everyone waited in the cafe and on the platform for the return journey.

Great hills. Did you see the multi million pound lodge at the top end of Loch Ossian? I did the round of Loch Ossian back in the mid 80s and camped by the loch before heading over to Culra Bothy. I’ve never stayed at the hostel but hope to rectify that next year with a bikepacking trip from Inverness to Carnoustie. I have revisited Corrour many times over the years, it is a favourite place of mine. Thanks as always for sharing Paul.

You know we didn't see the house Graham! its very well hidden and our route skirted alongside it. I think we barely seen the edge of a roof! This is my first time at the hostel and it was great! I am involved in a Spean Bridge to bridge of Orchy hike every year but I have aways camped! next year I am back in the hostel! no doubts about it!!!

Brilliant Paul fantastic video I stayed at the hostel one winter and a guy from Belgium was boiling loads of sprouts to eat as a meal on their own I thought some guys from Glasgow were going to throw him out as he stunk the place out 😆 lol anyway by measurement the Munro Carn Dearg is the most centrally located of the Central Highlands Munro’s and hence the most central munro in the Highlands according to Ralph Storers book ultimate guide to the Munros worth a debate over a pint 🍺 cracking video well put together mate
