  • Does sugar and vinegar really make your Cut flowers last longer. I read this online, but I was skeptical. After the second day I could maybe see that the flowers in the vinegar and sugar water we’re doing slightly better than plain water, MAYBE. After the third day of flowers look the same. So overall I don’t think it works. If you’ve had a different experience or, know of something else that really does work, Other than refrigeration because I really don’t want to keep the beautiful flowers in the refrigerator. Please comment below thanks for watching

I have always had my cut flowers last at least 3 weeks with sugar and vinegar in a glass vase.
I have a metal vase that looks nearly identical to yours, (my husband brought it back from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia during a tour of duty in the Air Force). I can't put flowers in it tho because they start to die within a few days no matter what I do.. Its still a beautiful vase without the flowers,
UPDATE, I stand corrected, my husband said he got that metal vase from Vietnam, not Riyadh.
Anyways, that vase is the reason your flowers are dying so quick.. Try the vinegar, and sugar again in a glass vase. Also, change the water every 3 days, cutting the ends of the stems and wash the bacteria out of your vase each time. One more thing, Flowers prefer lukewarm water over cold water.

replace vigegar with lemon juice or citric acid. Or just use sprite only

Sugar only. Leave the vinegar out and your flowers will last much longer. I figured this out through trial and error.

Interesting, I’ll definitely be giving this a try. Just sugar, out of curiosity how much longer do you think the flowers last with the sugar treatment?

sugar is the food that feeds the flowers but you need to have some sort of acid to ward off the bacteria.. hence vinegar or bleach.

@@america1403 agreed. Without the vinegar, sugar will make the flowers murky and slimy. The vinegar balances out the pH. If you look at it in terms of chemistry, the elements in sugar and vinegar is what helps the growth while reducing bacteria. The problem was the metal vase. Metal rusts. And an acid (vinegar) to metal and that’s a recipe for disaster. Best to stick with a glass vase and change the water every 2-3 days while adding 3 tbsp of sugar and 2 tbsp on vinegar for every liter

The real active ingredient in those flower feed is something what they cal "stem unpluggers". A kind of chemical.. it's tricky to find out what they are as they are not named by compound anywhere. probably related with patents and commercial interests. Luckily I saw what it was explained in an educative program when I was a little kid. It's basically something that works like a wetting agent, decreasing water tension and increasing it's surface area and therefor it's absorbability. It pokes holes trough the bubbles in the sap/stem that have formed after cutting the flowers, making the water/sap flow freely.
