  • In this episode we are fly fishing for trout during the Salmonfly hatch in June, fly fishing with the big dry flies, we catch and release some large Brown trout to three pounds. From the moment we start drifting to the boat launch the Madison River is one big riffle with boulders here and there to dodge and fish behind. It is fun, fast rowing and even more fun casting to likely areas, usually close to shore, where the Salmonflies are hatching and flying around the brush. The fish love these big bugs and this is one of the best times of year to catch big fish. We get advice and flies from the local Madison River Fishing Company in Ennis Montana (www.mrfc.com/) and learn from them that because there are so many fly fishers on the river casting similar Salmonfly patterns that a pattern that is a bit different can be more effective. So we use a darker bodied Salmonfly imitation and it works very well. The Madison River is a spectacular fishery. I hope you enjoy this episode.

Been to Montana twice to fish the Madison. We put in here once each time I went. Awesome float from there to Ennis. Great scenery as well. Can't wait to go back. I actually caught some nice ones wade fishing near the Palisades as well.

I'm heading there in about 3 weeks, I've never fly fished outside of Cali...This show got me shaking with excitement. (Maybe it was the coffee?)....
I can't believe I'm going to be RIGHT THERE (actually below Ennis, Madison river lodge..) I'm stoked!!

BTW, any reason to think the fishing "won't" be decent?? I consider a 3-5 fish day decent...I'm not greedy...

I would expect decent or better this time of year. Good luck. Let us know how it went

      I will.
I had a "trip of a lifetime " on the Truckee River in CA.
Honestly, other than the scenery that trip might be tough to beat.
I had a guide that day and he even said, " don't get used to this" ....
I'm really going to dig the drift boat as we can cover a lot of water....
      very jacked!

Newbie question: Is there a way to drift fish solo? It looks like you need someone to row for you.

You can do solo to get down the river but have to anchor and get out to fish.

Just wondering, does your Camera man ever get rod time?

Good question. He does sometimes. Goose lake show and a few others.

Laden has the worst fly fishing form I have ever witnessed, I’m amazed he gets anything to the net.

Hi Scott - This is Steve. You have made the perfect point. For too long fly fishing seems to be about perfection and elitisms. Thanks for illuminating one of our goals, which is to show that you do not have to be perfect to catch fish with a fly rod and reel. Best wishes.

Exactly. The guy is at the bottom of the skill scale. There’s lots about this video which is just silly.

@@FlyFishingwithLadin You entirely miss the point. The issue is not that the angler is not “ perfect “, it’s that he’s hapless and that makes the whole video seem hapless and silly.

So, we demonstrate that a hapless fly fisherman can catch lots of fish. Silly? Well we do get lots of laughs. Don't see the problem.

@@FlyFishingwithLadin Of course you don’t see the problem. If you did there wouldn’t be a problem.
