Ive watched a lot of videos like this on youtube and I have to say you are probably the easiest person to listen to. Nothing is scripted and everything seems genuine and natural. Thank you for making such a great inspirational video.
You might not be the best fisherman that I have seen (and Lord knows I am no better). What makes this one of the best vids I have seen in a long time is the smile and enjoyment I see on your face almost the entire time. Well done my friend, and I hope you have many safe and enjoyable days on the water.
Rod I just want you to know you and your channel have given me a new aspect on life to just have fun relax and fish you have given me a new passion and I hope one day to be as skilled as you.
Thanks! Those power drifters worked out really well. We didn't try any crazy rapids but people have definitely taken them down some sketchy waters. I think Outcast Boats has its own channel with some videos that show the same boat performing in bigger rapids. I really like the amount of room in those boats. We just have everything in dry bags and tie them in the boats. Good luck with your first craft when you get it! :)
It's definitely a lot of fun and an "elegant" way of catching fish. High end fly fishing gear can be pricy, but the cost of entry-level gear is actually quite reasonable. You should take a look at your local fly shop and see what are available there. Once you have a setup, you really don't need anything else except purchasing a few flies once awhile. Good luck!
Thank you. You can certainly wind a fish in with a fly reel instead of stripping the line in by hand. We usually strip the line in by hand if the fish are not too big, so we don't have to pull line out again when casting after landing the fish. If the fish are bigger, then we will play it on the reel and that can be a lot of fun. The gear ratio of a fly reel is one to one, so a lot of excitement and challenges can happen when fighting the fish.
Excellent pointers Josh! Many people are accustomed to setting the hook as they would with a large lure fishing for bass which isn't necessary when using such small hooks on a fly. I raise the rod is a smooth motion and pull the line towards my hip just as you describe. I still miss some but I'm working on it. Beautiful scenery in this video! Makes me a little disappointed thinking about the cold months to come.
One of your best videos! I love your attitude - caring about getting the fish, but still positive and smiling all the way. Wish I could always have that attitude on the water.
You're welcome, glad you enjoyed the video. Fly fishing is indeed more challenging than other techniques but just takes time to practice. For getting started on tying flies, the best thing to do is to sign up for an introductory course, which should be available at your local fly shops (usually winter months).
Fly fishing is a bit more challenging than other fishing techniques, but it's not that much more difficult to learn. The best way to start it is by visiting your local fly fishing store, get some tips on casting, fly patterns, reading water, etc regularly. The more you try it, the more you'll improve and it gets very fun once you start catching fish on flies that you tie! :) Good luck!
Thanks. During our visit to this area, we always run into many visiting anglers from Idaho and nearby states. Definitely come up for a visit one day. :)
I enjoyed your film greatly, just got back to fly fishing after 28 years away. If it was me and I missed two early on I'd be checking the fly, just to make sure. I bought some unbranded hooks (big mistake) and had three pretty small trout straighten them. Needless to say they were destroyed! Good luck!
It depends on the size of trout that you are targeting. Generally, a 4 or 5 wt is a good starting rod if you are new to fly fishing. These two classes of rods are appropriate for fish in the 1 to 4lb range, but can still handle specimen that are up to 6 or 7lb if necessary. My recommendation is to go into a local fly shop, ask to hold and swing a few different brands of 4 or 5wts before committing to a purchase. Good luck!
No problem, these descriptions are not exactly reader-friendly on TH-cam so easily missed. Outcast Boats has their own YT channel I think, and there are some videos showing this boat and other models doing some pretty insane rapids, just so you know what their capability is. What we did in this video is pretty elementary. Good luck with the boat shopping.
Thanks. I believe there are plenty of streams offering similar fisheries in Sweden too, for grayling and brown trout. We used some small stonefly nymphs, Copper Johns, for nymphing during the day, and some mayfly patterns in the evening for the risers.
Hi Steven, the fly rod used in the first half of this video is just a 9'0" 4wt. The blank is made by Rainshadow. It is a bit soft but does the job for me. The second half of the video, the rod is a 3wt Sage TXL, which is a fantastic rod for the small creek dry fly fishing.
Love your videos so much! I've watch at least 90% of them in the past few days. I can't wait to see what 2013 has in store for your videos :) You should pay attention to the warm water current that comes along the west coast, and see about and albacore trip! It's a lot of fun if you know where they are.
Thank you. Our goal of publishing these videos is to show others our success, errors and most importantly, our enjoyment in fishing so others can also get out there and experience the same.
Thanks. I actually love carp fishing very much and do it from time to time (actually I love all kinds of fishing). We've been hoping to get a video feature released on carp fishing but still need to work on it.
It's still pretty clear to me, about two to three feet. Even clearer when the tide is coming in, doesn't stir up the silt that gets deposited on the rocks on the outgoing tide.
You light up the dark Norwegian winter to:) not just the Swedish one. You guy`s really should think about spending a summer in Norway and Sweden, flyfishing salmon and trout. Maybe try the Hunderfoss trout in Norway, the largest, natural browntrout breed in the world. Hemsila, Rena, Nea rivers is some of the really great rivers in Norway. And in Sweden you can check out Västerdalälven, Fuluälven and Görälven.
Good video I have not fished the Elk river but have been to the Crowsnest Valley a few times. I will have to try it I likely will fish the Crow again in the next few years and it is not that far to Fernie. Thanks for posting now I want to go fishing and it is January. Cheers
Yeah it definitely brought more enjoyment/excitement into our trip. The fishing became a small component of the day as we were more interested in learning how to drift and relaxing as we gently floated downstream. ;)
Wading boots are not waterproof, therefore water indeed soaks through to your feet unless you have waders underneath them. We mainly only wore wading boots without waders during this trip because it was August and the water was quite tolerable, not too cold.
3wt, 3 weight or #3 is the number system used for fly fishing setup. The higher the number is, the heavier the setup is. A typical trout setup is 4 or 5wt. 3wt is pretty light and is only ideal for small stream trout up to a couple of lbs. 6wt+ are ideal for salmon and larger species.
Got two today and one yesterday with the biggest one today being about 6 pounds! At the end of #1 is the place to be right now, planning on hitting it as much as possible!!!
Thanks. We travel to Denmark once every year or two so perhaps we'll venture up to Norway for awhile in the near future. I've only been in Oslo for a couple of days and would definitely be interested in seeing what the countryside further North offers. Cheers!
Laziness I guess. In that second half of the video where all the fish were stipped in, we were running against time as the sun was setting. The fishing was hot as fish were hitting dries on almost every cast. I did not want to expend more time on reeling in and stripping out line between fights. Thanks for watching! :)
It really depends on where you are fishing and what they are feeding on. A fly that may work well in a stream is most likely ineffective in a lake. Flies used for one stream are more often than not different to the ones used for another stream because the insects found at two streams could entirely be very different. For lakes, leeches, dragonfly nymphs, chironomids are the standard ones to go with. Stonefly and mayfly in various stages work well for streams. Good luck!
Thanks for the video, the Elks looks like an excellent and enjoyable place to fish, hopefully be able to gt out there one day in the near future, thanks again for the video :D
The fly rod in the second part of this video is indeed a pretty light and short setup. It's a fairly expensive rod but you can find rods with similar specs at a much cheaper price as well. It's a 3wt rod, length is 7'10", very good for small stream fly fishing.
@fishingwithrod Where do you order your hooks from, or do you buy them in bulk? While looking at the Mustad S71SNP-ZS, I noticed they come with a closed eye. Do you pry open the eye of the hook, or is there a place where you can buy them with an open eye? Also, do you think snipping off 2 of the 3 hooks on the treble hook will weaken the last hook? Have you found the new hooks changing the action of your lure (and thus a lower catch rate)? Thanks Rod!
Rod, your videos always make we want to get out there! I'm just starting out with kastmasters and panther martins in a little reservoir around my house, but since they're trying to rebuild the Steelhead fishery it doesn't open 'til the last week of April. I would LOVE to learn how to fly fish! Do you get more of a rush from fly fishing as opposed to fishing with a spoon or spinner? I've heard the 'take' is something else! Greets from Central California!
@akintomeatloaf There's definitely a big rush when a trout sips down your fly from the surface because you just never know when that's going to happen while watching it intensely. That being said, I also enjoy spin fishing very much so I switch back and forth, depending on where and when I am fishing. Thanks for watching. :)
awesome video! i am a similar fly fishermen and just went on my first guided drift boat trip. absolutely loved it, had an amazing time and differently learned new things about fly fishing. now im thinking about buying my first small drift boat, similar to ones you guys were using... how did they work out? did they handle the rapids well? anything you could recommend? thanks, and great video!
Nice video and great looking stretch of water. I moved from Colorado down to Georgia and I really miss being able to look into some clear water. It's all muddy soup down here!
Any fly fishing stores should have mayfly patterns. The best thing to do is to visit a fly fishing store near the river where you plan to fish. They usually carry the flies that are working and will recommend which ones for you to try out. Thanks for watching!
The Outcast Power Drifters? In my area, they are available at a few local tackle stores. I'd go on Outcast Boats website and look for the dealer list in your area. Good luck!
@akintomeatloaf I don't really notice a different in action of the lure when the hook is changed. Pretty much all lures in this part of Canada come with a single hook now. I haven't used a treble hook in over 15 years.
pt. 2 so rather then setting the hook, simply tighten the line ! I do this by anchoring my line hand to my hip and using the rod hand just lift the rod tip ( since the fish is moving down, this will happen quickly! I hope this helps you like it did me, tight lines, Josh
@MrMrtiki I'm not too familiar with the geography of the area so I maybe wrong, but for this particular drift we started near the upper Elk River just north of Sparwood.

@fishingwithrod Hey, thanks for making awesome fishing videos! What brand of hooks do you use to replace your treble hooks on your spinners and spoons? You are the coolest fly fishermen I have ever seed.
I love how calm you stay when you miss a fish. Whenever i miss fish i cuss up a storm and start throwing crap. Love our videos keep it up. =D
One of your best videos! I love your attitude - caring about getting the fish, but still positive and smiling all the way. Wish I could always have that attitude on the water.
You're definitely one of my favorite fly fisherman to watch. Great video.

Way to go. Enjoy catching a few fish. Maybe I can catch one myself this weekend. Cheers!
I don't know what all the negative comments are about. I really like your videos rod, keep it up and don't let these guy's negativity get you down.
A great video Rod as always, wonderful scenery and cracking trout.ATB Steve.

Keep posting vids man, one of the greatest youtube fisherman ever!
@BeatriceSteinberg Absolutely. :) Snowy mountains, sunny day, wet wading in shorts, catching fish, cannot beat that. ;)
sweet fishing. looks beautiful there.

Wow, amazing river beautiful fishing and sweet mayfly!!!
Rod is looking good with those oars .

What a beautiful river. You should of sunk your fly. I use dish soap on the fly and 6 to 8 inches of the tippet. Great video thanks rod.
The grass is always greener on the other side. ;) We're actually coming over to the island next week. :)
Thanks. Hope you're getting lots of grayling up there right now.
Copper johns, small stonefly nymphs during the drift in the first part, some mayfly dry patterns at the end.

fly fishing is one of the most graceful sports out there! I'd love to try it, although I don't have the money :/
Those fish look delicious. I always have to go catch some sunfish to eat once I trout fish. Still eat the stockie when I catch him though.
Bull trout fishing is incredible right now, will we see you out there?!
Thank you. :) I definitely got too excited a few times and announced "fish on" before they were dancing on the line.
Hi, the boat is a "Outcast Power Drifter". If you do a search with those three words on Google you should be able to find it. :) Thanks for watching!
Very nice. The river looks pretty coloured up. What's the clarity?
It really depends on where you are fishing and what they are feeding on. A fly that may work well in a stream is most likely ineffective in a lake. Great music and video!! You guys should come over here to New Zealand! You'll fall in love!!
Thanks for the video, the Elks looks like an excellent and enjoyable place to fish, hopefully be able to gt out there one day in the near future, thanks again for the video :D
Thanks. This area in the video is probably our favourite place to visit in Canada. Feel free to ask us for info if you decide to come up. :)
Great video, always enjoy this river
Thanks!
Great video , come back to Denmark soon, seatrout season on the coast about to start now !
Google "Royalty free music" and you'll find companies that offer similar music pieces. Look forward to see some fishing vids from the Loops. ;)

Try holding the rod tip almost to the surface of the water. This will remove 2-3 feet of slack and will give you more positive hook setting.

@MrMrtiki I'm not too familiar with the geography of the area so I maybe wrong, but for this particular drift we started near the upper Elk River just north of Sparwood.
@hunthicks Thanks. ;) We don't fish dries very often so it takes awhile to get used to everytime we start doing it. ;)
Thanks...
Great video, like it a lot, J.
Hey Rod, what kind of boat was that they had you on? I'm looking for a personal pontoon/inflatable and liked the looks of how that was handling. Any recollection of what it was?
@fishingwithrod Hey, thanks for making awesome fishing videos!
What brand of hooks do you use to replace your treble hooks on your spinners and spoons? I'm hoping to change from some nasty treble hooks on my panther martins and kastmasters to practice more catch-and-release.
Also, do the hooks tend to get more tangled on your line since it's a single hook and has a longer shank than the treble?
How do you gauge what hook size to buy when replacing your trebles?
Thanks, Rod!
One day we'll make our way to the Swiss countryside and do some fishing there. ;) Cheers!
hi rod, thanks for the great video, just wonder are u wearing a wading boots in this video? if so does the water enter the boots? because im planning to get a chest wader and a wader boots, just wonder if water will enter the boots
No I don't necessarily. Fishing is an ongoing learning process. What twag735 suggested are very good advices and I certainly will consider them when I am in that same situation again. The hookset could have been a bit slower on the dry takes. :)
Also i was wondering if you recomend a beginners fly rod and reel thanks again.
We're always sharing info on the gear that we are using. Also check out our website, lots of articles on gear for specific fisheries such as this one.
my suggestion is that you should get more shots of the fish striking
this video was very helpful! i love fishing and i am just starting to get into fly fishing. it seems fun but difficult. i took a class to practice casting. i need to learn how to make the flies though. any suggestions? thank you, awesome video.
We'll be heading to Ucluelet but hoping to spend an afternoon on the east coast for pinks, but very unlikely, depends on if I can get all the filming done in time. :)
