I really enjoy your videos. I’m from South Africa and have moved to England 2 years ago. My mother was born in England, myself and my family have moved this side legally and at a high cost. I have a strong love for this country already and love how you care about the struggling population. This country is so blessed and so so much to be proud of. Have seen how quickly a country can go down with illegal immigration and crime lifestyles within the young. Let’s fight for what this country represents and keep the culture alive. Thanks again.
Mark, the part of the country with the worst outcomes in terms of things like crime, domestic violence, child poverty, unemployment, alcohol abuse, drug deaths, suicide rate and lots more is the North East England Region (one of the 9 official regions of England) and for the few things it not the worst for it's the second worst or third worst at the very best. It also somehow has the lowest number of immigrants, illegal or otherwise (1% African origin population for example, the lowest in England) and a quick check of the crime sections of the local newspapers that are available online shows that almost all the criminals are native English. This country is a lot more complicated than certain sections of the media make it out to be.

This is mental. I was born in Ormskirk and raised here and spent my life up until the age of 18 before joining the army. Haven’t been back in a while but seeing the duck and the Digmoor estate where I would play footie and go to them shows is crazy. Great videos and channel mate. Keep up the great work. ❤
Bill, Skem new town was built in the early 70s, yes like you said it was an over spill. When you applied for a council house you were vetted, they even inspected your house. People were made up getting a 3,4,5 bedroom house with bathroom, some houses came with a garage. It was like winning littlewoods pools for my parents, who had come from a kirkdale st. with an outside bog & a tin bath. There were plenty of factories, most people worked. Digmoor shopping parade was twice that size, it had 4 banks 2 big supermarkets, loads of shops. The concourse shopping centre was full of good shops too. As a kid you could go to a youth club, disco, sports centre etc. every night. Skem was a great place to raise a family. I would say there's 4/5 generations now since the new town started.... Digmoor has been left to run down, a lot of people have moved over to Ashurst, it's a better area at the other side of Skem, mixture of private houses & social housing so it tends to be better kept! The Skem accent is a softer scouse accent, most younger people will say they are from Skem. Them wannabe 'lids' you spoke to aren't typical, they probably never been to Liverpool 😂😂 The proper baddies are locked up!!!!? I guess you already know that. Skem is still a decent town, most of it's residents are good, friendly, hard working people.
No mate I'm talking about Digmoor. Old Skem got new housing estates in the 60s New Church Farm & Penny lands. Skelmersdale (old Skem) was a mining and farming town back in the day it did actually have a railway. The queen came past and waved at the kids in St Richards primary school in 50s.
I used to live round there (Blake Hall),late 70s / early 80s. It was brilliant! Such a community spirit, all kids played together, Digmore shops not locked up at night. Things have changed a bit now 😢
The couches and that dumped will be because bonfire nights upcoming - we have fires dotted about, part of the community vibe we’ve always grown up with and those couches will end up on the fire 🔥 Generally the towns pretty clean compared to a lot of other places
If the government invested in the area maybe people would have more pride in the area. Instead it's been abandoned like the vast majority of working class areas.
You hear the African man story and the chap running the boxing club for the community I love listening to people who are trying to make life better for themselves or for other people . Great content again Billy.
I’m from skem, lived all over Liverpool too. If you keep yourself to yourself then you’ll have a quiet peaceful life. The council do fix windows ect if it’s reported. The town centre is only a 1couple-15 minute walk from any estate in skem and tbf we have all the main shops that most people have. Corner shops are just for convenience. People go to Asda, Aldi , lidle ect

Very ugly estates, whoever designed should be ashamed 😬 Hats of to Kev and team for all they do 👏 and to that lovely man Ray, I will definitely be visiting this week 👍
I moved to Skelmersdale in 1977 a little over 10 years after it was granted all the benefits of "New Town"status. Unfortunately the people were badly let down by those unscrupulous and selfish companies who stayed in the town only as long as the enhanced financial rewards lasted. I have been very happy living here personally and have made many wonderful friends. It is fair to say though that the high level of deprivation in the community has contributed to many of the town's woes. Your film has certainly highlighted some of the major issues...Thoughtless estate planning, inadequate public transport provision, sparse availability of social, cultural and sporting amenities all of which have contributed sadly to a decline in public spirit and a growing sense of isolation and hopelessness particularly in our young people. I'm not confident that those in positions of trust and power have sufficient enthusiasm or the funds to make the necessary improvements.
From what I recall Bill, Skem was actually marsh land before the housing estates were erected there ready for it's fill back in the 50's/60's. My parents and my aunt and uncle were forced there from Scotland Rd back in the late 60's. The house they were in was falling down all around them and that was in the early 70's, no sooner had that place been built, it was already falling apart....
Whoever the architect was who designed these estates should be prosecuted and jailed. They are all over the country and all look the same! They are prime places for antisocial behavior the was they are built.
I with my young family moved to skelm is the eighties. It was a vibrant town with a great town center (the Conny) It was always buzzing and all areas were looked after, grass cut in the summer, clean streets and estates. West Lancs Council has let Skelm go, spending nothing on it even though it is the biggest town in west Lancs that brings in a lot of revenue to the burough. As you see the council spends very little on thier housing stock or areas where neglect has set in. They promised Skelm a new high street with shops if they sold off the green belt for housing. We got three bloody shops. They negate responsability for all services in Skelm and have like most councils sub contracted them out to firms that are more interested in profit than delivering quality services. The people of Skelm are fantastic and deserve better than what we are getting from the scandelous West Lancs Council. We need out of West Lancashire and into Merseyside or a council that will see the true potential of this lovely town. Skelm is a great place to live.
Run down isn't the word! Councils and some locals dont help these estates. Brilliant to see the boxing gym helping the community, Great Job Kev and the others!
It was probably a nice place for about 5 minutes in 1964. I don't know what the town planners were thinking when they designed it to be rows and rows and rows of identical grey houses.
Your videos are always a pleasure to watch showing the real UK 🇬🇧 and the working class l served in the Queens Lancashire Regiment. These estates are why people join the forces to get a leg up in life.
Did a couple of days at the Skem Advertiser and on the first night I went to the pub and someone kindly showed me the way home. I didnt realise it was to case the joint. And the local pub was described as a den of thieves when they applied for licence renewal. It was orrible but thankfully I soon scarpered back to Ormy.
“Built in the middle of nowhere” That was the point - it’s a factory town with easy links to the docks and M6. Although there was very minimal public transport back in the day so if you didn’t drive, you were stuck in a dead end town born and raised to be a line worker or packer It’s actually designed really well once you get to know it: - pedestrian access everywhere, you never need to cross a road if you choose to (likely changed over the years) - well named street groupings, all alphabetical eg A’s, B’s, C’s are in Diggy, E’s in Tanhouse, F’s and H’s in Birch Green etc etc - ZERO traffic lights, again may have changed a bit these days but can’t think of any specifically. The roundabouts were amazing for late night food delivery jobs because - combined with a lack of police force - you could bomb it round at 2am like a rally driver 😂 - coz it was an overflow from Liverpool, it HAD a real community feel to it growing up. Deffo changed but still most people know most people and/or happy to greet people friendly if you’re man enough to keep your head up Deffo rubbish in a few places that you e focused on but there’s poshie bits too - that’s part of why it’s lost its community feel because the family’s moved away and new ones moved in with no loyalties That Tanner chippy The New COD On The Block is belter too 👌🏻 Was a good town to grow up in back in the day and not a bad place now Random couches - we’re approaching bommy night (bonfire night). People put their shit out for the kids to collect and burn which is better than the alternative that we used to do which was rip people fences off… awks 😮😂 See, we had/were scallys back then too and some grew out of it haha Nice tour, enjoyed watching first thing but deffo think there’s a bit of bias towards the negative parts and that you could’ve showed some nicer places like Elmer’s Green and Upholland plus no views of the scenery which is stunning in places - but if you’re not from here, you may not have known and just gone where people mentioned to go. Tbf even on the “bad” estates, it’s not even that bad and if you keep yourself to yourself you’re generally good - stabbins and that are typically kept to each other and not civilians so normal people are usually alright
The reason they sound like they're from Liverpool is because they are. It was a Newtown. They demolished houses in Liverpool and rehoused the people there.
I grew up in birch green, now live on Digmoor, I always grew up thinking Digmoor was the rough area. My street is decent with decent neighbours, but there are rough areas all over now. These teens and kids with their faces covered think they're invincible now though, because nothing gets done about them. The kids need more to do and the teens need direction in their lives. Skem could thrive if people change their mindsets about the place
Oh here we go blame the muslims , what have they taken all the jobs or something? Claimed all the social housing? Anyway great idea about the burqas tho

I was born in Ormskirk, raised in Skem. We were one of the lucky ones that got out of Tanhouse when I was 7 and moved to Ashurst, which as a lot of people have said, is one of the better areas (though it's all frankly relative). The problem with Skem was always low expectation breeding low outcomes. Employment was always based on factory work, and when the New Town subsidies ran out a lot of them left causing real unemployment problems in the late 80's which is when the gangs moved in. There was just no "white collar" employment outside of the Co-Op bank and it was hard to get out as the transport links were so bad. The schools were no better. I suffered 5 years in St Thomas (now OLQoP High School - which itself is in special measures) and I can remember some of the teachers there trying to piss on any ambition I had (yes Mrs Ainscough - you thought you were better than us "Skum kids", you want to see how some of us who left in 1990 turned out; 3 of my mates run successful businesses and I got the army to pay for both of my degrees - but the point is none of us stayed as we couldn't have succeeded there and so Skem doesn't benefit from any of this). The town lacked infrastructure and things to do (thank god for Cadets which was a lifeline for a lot of us) other than hanging around the "conny" and the "eccy". It doesn't just need money and investment it needs a sense of expectation and opportunity and I knew if I didn't get out at 18 I'd be sucked in and would never get out.
The constant greyness is so incredibly mind numbing and depressing. It must be by design. The walls the floor the steps everything is grey as hell. real effort has been put into hiding how green england is in these areas.
Skem is a soulless place without a heart or any kind of focus. Just council estates, roundabouts interspersed by big open ploughed fields. I can only begin to imagine how depressing it would be to live there
I guess when they do go to prison it feels similar. I know folks in other countries have it worse but doesn't exactly encourage people to be positive and aspiring about their future.

Well filmed Billy, never seen so much pebbledash. When I was a kid in a Lancashire geography class the teacher taught us about how 'new towns' were being touted as 'the future' and Skelmersdale was a prime example for us to learn. I've never been there but you can see from this vlog that every structure was built during a small time period. No historical buildings and perhaps no future except neglect. It was noticeable in this vlog the lack of people on the streets. A venerable ghostown, zero community spirit. I'm only 40 minutes from there and now want to experience it so I can balance it with my geography teacher's past optimism. Google says 55% of the 40,000 population are Christians, hard to tell in this vlog. Didn't see any car washes, but on the upside we can now look forward to hearing Eritreans with scouse accents

@@martinwilkinson7939the media exploit an ignorant and de-moralised society that is prone to negativity and pessimism.

Them wannabe 'lids' you spoke to aren't typical, they probably never been to Liverpool 😂😂
The proper baddies are locked up!!!!?
I guess you already know that.
Skem is still a decent town, most of it's residents are good, friendly, hard working people.
It was late 1950s and early 1960s, an north Liverpool overspill.
Good analysis
Skem shopping parade ? There never been 1, I lived down there years, little shop there and there, never a parade in digmoor,

The difference in attitudes from the Polish and Sudanese guys compared to the others is both heartwarming and depressing.
I know many foreigners but they are all mainly really nice. It’s the English that are rude.. sadly.
From memory, I see the appearance of the place hasn't changed, so glad my parents got out of there and moved back into Liverpool...
Whoever the architect was who designed these estates should be prosecuted and jailed. They are all over the country and all look the same! They are prime places for antisocial behavior the was they are built.
She took her own life and never finished, allegedly. There are roads that just abruptly stop, leading nowhere.
She committed suicide apparently 🙄
@@Alien_O1true she was the architect who based Skelmersdale on Milton Keynes or vice versa. Same design.
The people in the houses who are to blame. People need to learn the word accountability
The town worked when it was built for the times but she never took into account for growth, investment & up keep in the design!
Thanks Billy, much appreciated.
Great to see a boxing club and people working hard for the kids in the community.
It was probably a nice place for about 5 minutes in 1964. I don't know what the town planners were thinking when they designed it to be rows and rows and rows of identical grey houses.

“Built in the middle of nowhere”
That was the point - it’s a factory town with easy links to the docks and M6. Although there was very minimal public transport back in the day so if you didn’t drive, you were stuck in a dead end town born and raised to be a line worker or packer
It’s actually designed really well once you get to know it:
- pedestrian access everywhere, you never need to cross a road if you choose to (likely changed over the years)
- well named street groupings, all alphabetical eg A’s, B’s, C’s are in Diggy, E’s in Tanhouse, F’s and H’s in Birch Green etc etc
- ZERO traffic lights, again may have changed a bit these days but can’t think of any specifically. The roundabouts were amazing for late night food delivery jobs because - combined with a lack of police force - you could bomb it round at 2am like a rally driver 😂
- coz it was an overflow from Liverpool, it HAD a real community feel to it growing up. Deffo changed but still most people know most people and/or happy to greet people friendly if you’re man enough to keep your head up
Deffo rubbish in a few places that you e focused on but there’s poshie bits too - that’s part of why it’s lost its community feel because the family’s moved away and new ones moved in with no loyalties
That Tanner chippy The New COD On The Block is belter too 👌🏻
Was a good town to grow up in back in the day and not a bad place now
Random couches - we’re approaching bommy night (bonfire night). People put their shit out for the kids to collect and burn which is better than the alternative that we used to do which was rip people fences off… awks 😮😂 See, we had/were scallys back then too and some grew out of it haha
Nice tour, enjoyed watching first thing but deffo think there’s a bit of bias towards the negative parts and that you could’ve showed some nicer places like Elmer’s Green and Upholland plus no views of the scenery which is stunning in places - but if you’re not from here, you may not have known and just gone where people mentioned to go.

The accents are comedy gold off these young plastics 😂

Not much ethnic diversity in Skem compared to most towns, despite Billy meeting the African lads as soon as he left the duck.

@@robertbuckley3480 as I've said, thats YOUR opinion. My opinion is that I like it, don't know what you want me to say! I live on Ashurst and have always loved it here. Not everyone walks around like zombies either. There's some really, lovely, decent people up here. Like I said also, everywhere has their good and bad parts. Just because you think of Skem that way doesn't mean everyone does or has to. There are worst places to live and I'm happy here.
Really beautiful little part of the world. Quaint with character.
Been a good few years since I lived in tanhouse, God am glad we moved
Billy, love the way you went on about a Roast Dinner. Proper Scouse that innit, us Scousers love our roast dinners on a Sunday! 😂👍🏼
Go the Digmoor Chippy....lovely people running that. A proper family and great food!
I remember growing up the Say family had it in the 90's/early 00's. Quality chippy.
Back in the late 70's they were selling off houses for £1000 in Skem so me and the Mrs takes a look, the houses that they were selling off had no front doors and there was rubbish dumped in the houses and they had holes in the roof where the skylights used to be! it was signs of what's to come so we did one as soon as we saw the 2nd house as every house that was being sold had no skylight from what we witnessed when we stuck out heads out through the roof space!
I have to admit I have only passed through the roundabouts in skem on my way to Ormskirk and Upholland. I do like the roundabouts as a quick way through without stopping at lights for no good reason.
Billy, you're a good man going to these desperately run down places and showing everyone respect. And thank you for showing the local heroes (in my book anyway), the fellas that run the clubs (boxing, Thai...), these are salt of the earth people, yet they do so much for the kids and the community.
Another great vid Billy x
"Personally I like my roast dinners warm" 😂 best quote ever billy..thanks for sharing interesting watch. I've been to skem industrial estate plenty times so interesting to see the town etc, kind regards Bill
