I returned to Runcorn after living in Liverpool for 5years. Fields space, walks no traffic. Show both sides mate don't just do click bate mate. Parents moved from overcrowding not slums.
I’m sure there is someone out there that could represent the area fairly but I find austerity and poverty neglected by the government and councils!! P.s Runcorn offered a high-density, low-rise (five-story) solution to the national housing problem at a time when “slums” in nearby Liverpool were being demolished in swaths, and when many public housing authorities were still moving their tenants into new high-rises which were themselves to prove troublesome. Yeah that's part of Castlefields looked run down but over the other side of the shops, phoenix park ways it's lovely and open, not an empty house on any of the streets, so rubbish gets put out but within days it's cleared. Are these areas if the same estate run bu different housing associations? My side, phoenix, is onward homes, I remember centurion being a different one so maybe the housing associations are to blame

No better or worse than anywhere else, I've lived in castlefields for over 30 years, its done me no harm. One thing they've done in all areas is wreck the community spirit, look up common purpose, all done by design.
Me mum moved us from Liverpool to Runcorn in 79, I lived there until 88 until I joined the Army. We grew up on another estate called Palacefields. Back then it was a laugh, it was a lot cleaner then, loads of places to roam, The castle, the canals, the Shoppo (the shopping mall you went in), the Ski slope, loads to do as kids, we would even walk to the Runcorn bridge and climb on it and loads of other places we went to. Castlefields was a lot bigger, it had loads of long rows of grotty flats that are now gone. It was sound growing up for us around Runcorn.
Different times lad..Different times...the country was a different place back then..I was born in 1979 and grew up through the 80s and 90s in some of the worst areas in Birmingham but I have great memories of my childhood always out having a laugh with mates getting into all kinds 😂
funny how a lot of the people i know from runcorn, (way back) ended up in the forces, was a good way to get out of runcorn. my dads side are old halton village and my mums side moved ro runcorn from liverpool back when you had to use the transporter to get across. when i was a kid i used to like going on the expressway bridge down the canal over halton road to watch runcorn playing, i remeber before that bridge was there there was a church and the dairy was just up the back. had some epic parties in those flats on castlefields, as crap as they were i loved that you could walk from nearly one side of the estate to the other under cover for most of it. also loved the fact that john bishop likes to raise, in every estate theres a shop chippy and a pub thats usually centralish to the estate. lived in a few parts of runcorn, the heath, halton lodge, halton brook, halton road 3 times.

Near brought to tears by the group of young lads, I brought my son up in Govan and all his pals were great kids and now young adults, at this age they need adults to engage with them and give them opportunities before they become victims of the rigours of life.
Moved from Gainford Rd off finch Lane to castlefields early 1982 at 14 years old. The Fidds was a great community pub up until mid 90's when they knocked Southgate down. They dispersed most of the Southgate community around runcorn a lot of whom were drug addicts etc. It ruined all the estates especially the pubs. I love Runcorn and have little holidays there occasionally staying in the campanile. The Fiddlers 3 got its name in the early 70's from a competition to name the pub. At that time there was only 3 cooling towers at Fiddlers Ferry powerstation and that's how it got its name. Ferry view walk dominated Castlefields with almost a mile long of flats but they're gone now. Foxy was the Landlord of the Fiddlers in them days. Alec Parker ( former Everton International for Scotland) run The swinging sporran in shopping City later renamed Rudolphs. He was a lovely man him and Eileen. There's a Pathe news article on TH-cam from 1958 of him winning Scottish footballer of the year. I hope Runcorn gets the needed investment it deserves.
Im a Runcorn lad born and bred, you'd call me a "Wool" Billy. Runcorn has never been Las Vegas, but what the local Labour council has done to my town over the decades is shocking, there is no way out, pin a red rosette on a donkey and the people will vote for it.
My antie and uncle use to live in windmill Hill about 40 yrs ago bill just over from castlefields . I was around 12/13 back then. Use to go there every school holidays , six week summer holidays etc . Use to love it back then, couldn't wait to get there . Watching this has shocked me because back then it was nothing like that . There was a sports centre in windmill hill , swimming pool and loads of things to do . Go fishing in the lake and canal there , tennis courts etc .swimming pool and sports centre are all gone now last time I took a drive there about 10 yrs ago. Even the school that was there has gone. Like a ghost town now. Wouldn't live there now if you paid me to live there. 🫣😩🙈

It has a Warrington postcode, has Cheshire as the county, is governed by Halton council, falls under the Liverpool City Region, uses Cheshire Police/Fire Service, North West Ambulance, and shares an MP with Helsby. This is the point I was going to make but you made it better. It has no identity. I worked close by for 6 months many years ago. For an outsider it's a very difficult place to get your head around or make any sense of. It's actually a bit strange.
Bootle, Crosby etc... are similar. God knows why they are in this made up area called 'Sefton' and lumped in with Southport. Don't get me started on this. The wastage, inefficiency and stupidity of these council/service areas does my head in. It's like the entire thing was created by someone drunk with a crayon scribbling on a map. I live in Runcorn and absolutely love it here. You were guided by a kid in the first park to a better area, but you did not go; instead, you walked about 10 miles in the opposite direction to another deprived area. There are beautiful places in Runcorn, but just like everywhere else, it has its bad areas. If you are attracted to them like flies to excrement, then that is what you are going to find. Your content is biased and negative.
That fair to look at bad areas but dont misrepresent the whole town with a headline calling runcorn a getto it isnt ive lived here all my life there are lots of nice areas to show the empty pub ok there a few closed down over the year there local estate pubs which is what you see up and down the country if he bothered to actually go the old town there's pubs open weretherspoons etc your right about showing the bad but higher runcorn is really nice and runcorn for most is not a getto and ive travelled all over the country and trust me there are worst places just saying @Crazyfilmm
Top marks Billy for visiting my home town of Runcorn. I would of loved to of bumped into you. Lived here all my life and yeah you have captured a dark part of it but there's some great areas of the town that are steep in history. Its a shame people think of Runcorn like this when in fact its pretty safe. A lot of the New Town as its called is the same tho the housing image differs, the mood can be different in each one. I think there's good and bad parts of all areas you go to. Even in the quietest of villages, it's the same. Think I'd rather live in runcorn than live in a village that likes just their tea and slippers.

I'm a photographer, have been for over 30yrs now. Shopping centres are NOT public places, they are places open to the public. They're not the same thing. They are also usually on private ground and owned by a business entity. Usually as a rule of thumb expect to get challenged and to have to put the camera away.
I can assure you a shopping center is a public place weather privately owned or not and as such must have clear signage if filming is not allowed, just like a theater, you can walk into a privately owned theater and film a whole concert unless there is signage saying you cannot, that is the law my friend these days, with modern technology.
The phrase is "publicly accessible." If these shopping centres want to prevent visitors filming then they will need to ban the use of mobile phones, which have the capability to film. Just because someone is pointing an object capable of filming, does not guarantee they are doing such. The reply I give should anyone challenge me, is "I'm wearing trainers but I'm not f'king jogging am I?"
I lived in Castlfields in the early 80's after my family moved from West Derby, it was such a lovely place to live, lots of kids, Bridgwater Canal, shopping city, plenty of outside spaces to play, good youth centre, I left when I was 17 after joining the military & later returned 10 years later to run a Community & Youth Centre the decline was starting then, big 5/6 bed houses but no more big families to live in them, I even had a good night upstairs in the Fidds one night (can't remember her name) sad to see it like this now, it's also the same for the military bases I served on, closed, dilapidated & vandalised, Runcorn is in the top5 of a nuclear strike by Russia due to it's petrochemical industries, sadly I think that would be an improvement*
Its a shame the LA neglects these areas. Those grim brutalist buildings would be much less depressing with a power wash. Those were good kids. They deserve to have things to do and persevere so they can build proper futures for themselves.

The problems that you are showing are in every town, and thanks for highlighting it. What was that church doing that looked closed, there is no effort by them either to go out to the communities, and offer help and support, and they are supposed to be doing gods work. Massive overhaul is needed by the police, councils, and elected MPs to step up and start to sort this instead of turning a blind eye

My uncle married a girl from Runcorn, he met her on holiday in the Isle of Man in the 60's and moved down. I came down from Glasgow on Holiday as a 13 year old in the early 70's, I loved it. for the two weeks I was down that first time I helped an old guy deliver milk on an electric float, he paid me 10 pence a day. With the money I bought my first pair of 'Wrangler' jeans from the 'Army and Navy' stores in the town. He took me to Anfield, Liverpool were playing Crystal Palace, I went in the Kop, Keegan, Toshack, and Emlyn Hughes were the big names but Ian Callaghan caught my eye, he ran the show! My uncle worked for ICI, and had a lovely 4 bedroom home, he bought in Wicksten Drive, to me it was posh, coming from a rough council scheme.
Don’t really understand the point in this video. You have literally sought out every rough/derelict row of houses/pub/area. I have hard working families in the council estates in Runcorn, originated from my Grandparents that were from Liverpool. Hard working people who have looked after their home and brought their family up to all work hard and be respectful. They still live in Castlefields, their house is beautiful, well kept and their street is a lovely community. I grew up in a council estate, again all hard working people and making a living. Have you tried going to these type of areas/houses/pubs so there is a balanced approach? Queen of Hearts/The Norton Arms both thriving. Please don’t try and paint a picture of Runcorn being full of lazy/ scruffy/rough people that have partly originated from the ‘slum’ areas of Liverpool. These people have actually created a community here which is thriving. And partly to thank for it being such a great place to live!

My mum and dad moved from Liverpool to runcorn first to castlefields in 1973 it was brand new and a great place to grow up we ended up in murdishaw had a great upbringing but now it's a whole different story it makes me sad to see how it's gone 😢
The kids in Runcorn seem to have some morals and knowledge about them. The revenue that council gets from all them properties, just a shame it’s not spent more efficiently. There is always someone telling you, you are not allowed to film but no one to pick up the litter.
Worked in Runcorn up to a few years ago until they opened the new bridge. Then I had to find £2k a year for the privilege of using it. I found another job that didn't mean I had to pay extra to get in and out of.
I moved into Murdishaw, Runcorn in 75 when Murdishaw was just a newly completed Mooring close and that was it. Doctors, dentist and shop were in some houses as there wasn't any buildings for those purposes. I was bussed into Moore to their Junior school. Fields and frogs that's all there was in Murdishaw.
As a plasterer I use to do 80% of my work in Runcorn and it was a great place to be at , loved going for beer there and loved the ppl , I’m in Australia now and I didn’t recognise the place , it’s really sad

The area round the Fids is owned by plus dane and people pay service charges for them to keep it tidy and clean and they do nothing. Runcorn is a nice place it's what gets moved into the area that causes the issues there is a lack of pride in some not all places

I moved to runcorn 7 years ago after living in Liverpool most of my life. I loved the nice canal walks and open spaces we have access too. I 100% agree the video was far from a true representation of our town.
You can tell the young lad with the mic on his top actually cares about everyone around him, they wont see it now but as they get older they will. Just shows good people can come from anywhere.

@MichaelParkinson-wz1nh I'm pretty lucky really as I work remotely. So being here and working from home makes it all viable. Because job opportunities are not that good around here. A lot of the youngsters have to leave for Lisbon, Porto or Madrid. I'm 38. I left when I was 26. It was the year after those riots. I'll never forget being sat at home whilst they were outside putting windows through and setting fire to cars. It was really frightening. It was then ans there I decided I wanted out. I'm glad you are doing okay regardless though lovely. But definitely considering your options once you retire. Moving abroad to retire is easier than you think. Providing you have your pension sorted and can sort a place to live, then you should easily be able to get a visa. Then again, you never know. They may bring freedom of movement back by then. I feel for you having that melt as PM. I knew he would be like this. Said all along, he is no different from Macron, Trudeau etc.
This is like the rest of the 60s/70s 'new towns'.... Neglected! Some concrete houses were thrown up for temporary accommodation (habitable for10yr maximum) but they are still lived in, fifty years later. They are wringing with damp & mold. The design of these estates just don't work, Skem is the same. The sad part of this is there's good people stuck there, they keep their houses clean & decent, but then you see the disfunctional people bring the area down. Those young lads were good kids... Shame the youth clubs have disappeared off the face of the earth. There's no jobs, they are encouraged to stay on, get qualifications go to uni, get a hefty debt & end up in a call centre or retail. And so it goes.... no wonder the birth rate has dropped, no prospects for the youth it's depressing!! Keep on keep'n on and stay positive 👍
I once cycled through Runcorn, and i made a wrong turn an got lost, I thought I'd turned onto the set of Shameless, it was like a square with a sofa by a power station an people sittin off all bevied. Began with a P cant really remember the name of the place, anyway I should find my way home soon haha.
How do you get a job as a security supervisor if you can't understand English? Also Billy you can Film anything, anyone and anywhere in a public place. Although, some peolple would argue that while it is a shopping Mall. It is owned and run by a private company and as such it is private property. Eg: If I open my garden to the public for a BBQ. They are allowed in, but it is still my private property. Just an analogy.

It's earmarked for demolition and flats are being built there but it's probably taking ages for the planning to go through and then the housing association to get the cheapest contractors to throw the flats up

Moved from Toxteth to Castlefields in the late 60s into a bungalow with an indoor toilet and radiators it was like winning the lottery a great place to grow up community spirit and friendly people years later it got a bad reputation such a shame but there are some really nice parts of Runcorn pity i missed you bill would like to go for a bevvy with you sometime
Fully appreciate you being in Runcorn and doing what you do. On the question of filming in Shopping City. Shopping city is privately owned land with public access. Not public land. So that were filming would come into question. Personally i dont see the problem with filming. And agree with your sentiments. As for law, its a civil matter. Not a criminal one. So if action were to be taken, it would pertain to damages of private entitiys reputation or defamation for example. On private land with public access, if you've been served notice (the signs) that you cannot film ans you do. It comes under breach of contract as opposed to breaking a law. I done the 'double whammy.' Skem in 1969, then moved to Runcorn in 78. Been here ever since. Just like anywhere else, there are grim parts of Runcorn (Castlefields as featured) and there are some great areas. I've lived in both grim (Halton Lodge and Southgate) and great parts (Norton Cross, Higher Runcorn, and Sutton Park when it was new in the early 80s). Skem was good in the early 70s but went rapidly downhill when all the factories started closing down.

Try living in Bradford for 15 years and Runcorn is just fine. I think you painted Runcorn in a bad light. Runcorn has a lot of nice areas. Castlefields is much better than it was in the 80’s. There are some run down areas like all towns have. To correct you on saying people came from the slums of Liverpool to Runcorn, my parents didn’t come from slums when they moved to Runcorn and my wife certainly didn’t. Look around all the nice areas of Runcorn, even the not so nice areas are better than living in Liverpool. One thing people notice when visiting is how many trees Runcorn has and historical sites. You also don’t get stuck in traffic due to having free flowing expressways. I would rather live in Runcorn, my home town.

Heya Billy, I live in Runcorn, the shopping city has always been funny over pictures and videos, a few locals had issues with them in past. yeah some of the estates are rough, but as you said a lot of history in Runcorn, you should of gone to the old town and seen where two pints of lager was filmed. what alot of people say about Runcorn is the council all live in Widnes so don't really care for Runcorn. the decks as you was looking at near the end of the video has had lots of issues with the cladding. with many people losing alot of money. as not much money in area alot of companys fail so then that makes less jobs and so on and so on. Runcorn does do well for bigger company's due to the area however (ideal near m56 airports and near river and sea.) if you ever go runcorn again i can give you more areas to look at.

What ever happened to youth clubs? Why did they just disappear? Not having them has stopped kids being kids. It's forced a generation to grow up too fast and has made them think they have to act out while walking the streets with nothing to do. I feel like a lot needs to be done now to change the mindset and that a cultural shift is needed. Runcorn Has never been great, granted. But it had community. Castlefields was predominantly built up in the 70s local schools youth clubs the council actually had moneh great place to live now it's an absolute sesspool nothing to do no money getting spent apart from building houses and they've shut over 30 pubs down easily in the last decade
theres actually video of this look up the docu Runcorn New Town 'The Leaving of Liverpool' 1974 Full Documentary it has their vision for the new town and a handy map and some buildings, which i remember seeing as a kid
Such an ugly place, Literally the most disgusting looking 'houses' all grouped together, intertwined with alleyways, underpasses and random round-a-bouts everywhere, Absolutely nothing to do, young or old. Has to be one of the most depressing places to live in the UK. At least up north.
there is actually some really nice looking houses and really nice old buildings too, you just have to avoid the estates mostly and just look in the old villages that now make up runcorn. theres a good few listed buildings too, although some of these are going or have gone due to a plague of arson attacks after planning permission to change the building gets declined...
I travel up to Runcorn every weekend from the midlands. My Mrs lives in Castlefields. I walked past that derelict pub this weekend just gone when we went down to the canal for a walk. Positives are you hear a lot of laughter from the locals, a lively bunch and the only trouble we had was some kids throwing a rock at the mrs window once. The negatives are in Castlefields I’ve never seen so many ally ways, a copper would have 0 chance of catching someone as there are no dead ends at all. All the kids wear all black, I call it the road man uniform, you just don’t see that in the towns of similar size in the midlands, kids just dress normal. And the estate has potential with lots of green spaces but there’s a lot of rubbish thrown out around the place.
I grew up 2 streets over from centurion row on shepherds row and in the 70’s and 80’s it was a great place growing up, we all went to the same schools and there was a youth club that was excellent, I went back about 5 years ago and the place was unrecognisable. No kids playing and it looked quite old and shabby,still have friends there now who say it’s gone a bit rough but believe me when I say we loved growing up there …suppose all estates need regenerating at some point but like other parts of the country they’ve been left to fall in to neglect and decline….damn shame
Lived in runcorn from 74 to 2004 was an amazing place to have been brought up in. Gone to pot since then, only visit cause family are still living there. Come on, government, we all pay taxes.
I left over 20 years ago. It was always a bit rough but its looking worse now. We had things to do in the 80s, youth clubs, community centres, boxing clubs. Nothing for those kids anymore its quite sad to see how run down its become
I grew up in widnes and it does have great people but it really is concrete city. I have been in runcorn for almost 30 years now . There are other parts of runcorn the lovely noeton priory museum and gardens the canal, the huge woods all the greenery, the feilds. You walked through a rough part of runcorn, and if you look hard enough, you will find those places in any town

Yeah that's part of Castlefields looked run down but over the other side of the shops, phoenix park ways it's lovely and open, not an empty house on any of the streets, so rubbish gets put out but within days it's cleared. Are these areas if the same estate run bu different housing associations? My side, phoenix, is onward homes, I remember centurion being a different one so maybe the housing associations are to blame

Me mum moved us from Liverpool to Runcorn in 79, I lived there until 88 until I joined the Army.
We grew up on another estate called Palacefields. Back then it was a laugh, it was a lot cleaner then, loads of places to roam, The castle, the canals, the Shoppo (the shopping mall you went in), the Ski slope, loads to do as kids, we would even walk to the Runcorn bridge and climb on it and loads of other places we went to. Castlefields was a lot bigger, it had loads of long rows of grotty flats that are now gone. It was sound growing up for us around Runcorn.
Different times lad..Different times...the country was a different place back then..I was born in 1979 and grew up through the 80s and 90s in some of the worst areas in Birmingham but I have great memories of my childhood always out having a laugh with mates getting into all kinds 😂

funny how a lot of the people i know from runcorn, (way back) ended up in the forces, was a good way to get out of runcorn.
my dads side are old halton village and my mums side moved ro runcorn from liverpool back when you had to use the transporter to get across.
when i was a kid i used to like going on the expressway bridge down the canal over halton road to watch runcorn playing, i remeber before that bridge was there there was a church and the dairy was just up the back.
had some epic parties in those flats on castlefields, as crap as they were i loved that you could walk from nearly one side of the estate to the other under cover for most of it.
also loved the fact that john bishop likes to raise, in every estate theres a shop chippy and a pub thats usually centralish to the estate.

Moved from Gainford Rd off finch Lane to castlefields early 1982 at 14 years old. The Fidds was a great community pub up until mid 90's when they knocked Southgate down. They dispersed most of the Southgate community around runcorn a lot of whom were drug addicts etc. It ruined all the estates especially the pubs. I love Runcorn and have little holidays there occasionally staying in the campanile. The Fiddlers 3 got its name in the early 70's from a competition to name the pub. At that time there was only 3 cooling towers at Fiddlers Ferry powerstation and that's how it got its name. Ferry view walk dominated Castlefields with almost a mile long of flats but they're gone now. Foxy was the Landlord of the Fiddlers in them days. Alec Parker ( former Everton International for Scotland) run The swinging sporran in shopping City later renamed Rudolphs. He was a lovely man him and Eileen. There's a Pathe news article on TH-cam from 1958 of him winning Scottish footballer of the year. I hope Runcorn gets the needed investment it deserves.

My antie and uncle use to live in windmill Hill about 40 yrs ago bill just over from castlefields . I was around 12/13 back then. Use to go there every school holidays , six week summer holidays etc . Use to love it back then, couldn't wait to get there . Watching this has shocked me because back then it was nothing like that . There was a sports centre in windmill hill , swimming pool and loads of things to do . Go fishing in the lake and canal there , tennis courts etc .swimming pool and sports centre are all gone now last time I took a drive there about 10 yrs ago. Even the school that was there has gone. Like a ghost town now. Wouldn't live there now if you paid me to live there. 🫣😩🙈

This is the point I was going to make but you made it better. It has no identity. I worked close by for 6 months many years ago. For an outsider it's a very difficult place to get your head around or make any sense of. It's actually a bit strange.
Bootle, Crosby etc... are similar. God knows why they are in this made up area called 'Sefton' and lumped in with Southport. Don't get me started on this. I live in Runcorn and absolutely love it here. You were guided by a kid in the first park to a better area, but you did not go; instead, you walked about 10 miles in the opposite direction to another deprived area. There are beautiful places in Runcorn, but just like everywhere else, it has its bad areas. If you are attracted to them like flies to excrement, then that is what you are going to find. Your content is biased and negative.

Top marks Billy for visiting my home town of Runcorn. I would of loved to of bumped into you. Lived here all my life and yeah you have captured a dark part of it but there's some great areas of the town that are steep in history. Its a shame people think of Runcorn like this when in fact its pretty safe. A lot of the New Town as its called is the same tho the housing image differs, the mood can be different in each one. I'm a photographer, have been for over 30yrs now. Shopping centres are NOT public places, they are places open to the public. They're not the same thing. They are also usually on private ground and owned by a business entity. Usually as a rule of thumb expect to get challenged and to have to put the camera away.
As somebody who has dealt with owners of shopping centres in the past in my job, I can second this and can back it up. They are privately owned.
Maybe our taxes should stop funding them then.
I can assure you a shopping center is a public place weather privately owned or not and as such must have clear signage if filming is not allowed, just like a theater, you can walk into a privately owned theater and film a whole concert unless there is signage saying you cannot, that is the law my friend these days, with modern technology.
The phrase is "publicly accessible." If these shopping centres want to prevent visitors filming then they will need to ban the use of mobile phones, which have the capability to film. Just because someone is pointing an object capable of filming, does not guarantee they are doing such. The reply I give should anyone challenge me, is "I'm wearing trainers but I'm not f'king jogging am I?"
I lived in Castlfields in the early 80's after my family moved from West Derby, it was such a lovely place to live, lots of kids, Bridgwater Canal, shopping city, plenty of outside spaces to play, good youth centre, I left when I was 17 after joining the military & later returned 10 years later to run a Community & Youth Centre the decline was starting then, big 5/6 bed houses but no more big families to live in them, I even had a good night upstairs in the Fidds one night (can't remember her name) sad to see it like this now, it's also the same for the military bases I served on, closed, dilapidated & vandalised, Runcorn is in the top5 of a nuclear strike by Russia due to it's petrochemical industries, sadly I think that would be an improvement*
Its a shame the LA neglects these areas. Those grim brutalist buildings would be much less depressing with a power wash. Those were good kids. They deserve to have things to do and persevere so they can build proper futures for themselves.

My uncle married a girl from Runcorn, he met her on holiday in the Isle of Man in the 60's and moved down. I came down from Glasgow on Holiday as a 13 year old in the early 70's, I loved it. for the two weeks I was down that first time I helped an old guy deliver milk on an electric float, he paid me 10 pence a day. With the money I bought my first pair of 'Wrangler' jeans from the 'Army and Navy' stores in the town. He took me to Anfield, Liverpool were playing Crystal Palace, I went in the Kop, Keegan, Toshack, and Emlyn Hughes were the big names but Ian Callaghan caught my eye, he ran the show! My uncle worked for ICI, and had a lovely 4 bedroom home, he bought in Wicksten Drive, to me it was posh, coming from a rough council scheme.
Don’t really understand the point in this video. You have literally sought out every rough/derelict row of houses/pub/area. I have hard working families in the council estates in Runcorn, originated from my Grandparents that were from Liverpool. Hard working people who have looked after their home and brought their family up to all work hard and be respectful. They still live in Castlefields, their house is beautiful, well kept and their street is a lovely community. I grew up in a council estate, again all hard working people and making a living. Have you tried going to these type of areas/houses/pubs so there is a balanced approach? Queen of Hearts/The Norton Arms both thriving. Please don’t try and paint a picture of Runcorn being full of lazy/ scruffy/rough people that have partly originated from the ‘slum’ areas of Liverpool. These people have actually created a community here which is thriving. And partly to thank for it being such a great place to live!

The kids in Runcorn seem to have some morals and knowledge about them. The revenue that council gets from all them properties, just a shame it’s not spent more efficiently. There is always someone telling you, you are not allowed to film but no one to pick up the litter.

Worked in Runcorn up to a few years ago until they opened the new bridge. Then I had to find £2k a year for the privilege of using it. I found another job that didn't mean I had to pay extra to get in and out of.

I moved into Murdishaw, Runcorn in 75 when Murdishaw was just a newly completed Mooring close and that was it. Doctors, dentist and shop were in some houses as there wasn't any buildings for those purposes. I was bussed into Moore to their Junior school. Fields and frogs that's all there was in Murdishaw.
As a plasterer I use to do 80% of my work in Runcorn and it was a great place to be at , loved going for beer there and loved the ppl , I’m in Australia now and I didn’t recognise the place , it’s really sad

Many many years ago I lived in Runcorn and worked in the shopping city down in the bowels. No windows, no fresh air. It was torture. Couldn’t wait to leave.

Grew up in runcorn moved out when I was 16 to be honest it taught me how life really is at a young age wow its a wrote off these days
nice spot of Urbxing there in that pub at the start, That is what I used to love doing, Going to forgotten places with a decent flashlight and a camera and photograph sites that have been left to the elements! I miss doing that but I really can not do it alone as the risk is way too high that I might run into somebody who might not be too friendly! Again Billy, Keep up the good work with your videos. The area round the Fids is owned by plus dane and people pay service charges for them to keep it tidy and clean and they do nothing. Runcorn is a nice place it's what gets moved into the area that causes the issues there is a lack of pride in some not all places
I commented this. If he came to the area covered by onward homes it wouldn't look like that. It's more a review on housing associations as over phoenix park way it's clean and not an empty house in site. It's like he's seemed out the bad only. Terrible video.

I moved to runcorn 7 years ago after living in Liverpool most of my life. I loved the nice canal walks and open spaces we have access too. I 100% agree the video was far from a true representation of our town.

@MichaelParkinson-wz1nh I'm pretty lucky really as I work remotely. So being here and working from home makes it all viable. Because job opportunities are not that good around here. A lot of the youngsters have to leave for Lisbon, Porto or Madrid. I'm 38. I left when I was 26. It was the year after those riots. I'll never forget being sat at home whilst they were outside putting windows through and setting fire to cars. It was really frightening. It was then ans there I decided I wanted out. I'm glad you are doing okay regardless though lovely. But definitely considering your options once you retire. Moving abroad to retire is easier than you think. Providing you have your pension sorted and can sort a place to live, then you should easily be able to get a visa. Then again, you never know. They may bring freedom of movement back by then. I feel for you having that melt as PM. I knew he would be like this. Said all along, he is no different from Macron, Trudeau etc.

This is like the rest of the 60s/70s 'new towns'.... Neglected! Some concrete houses were thrown up for temporary accommodation (habitable for10yr maximum) but they are still lived in, fifty years later. They are wringing with damp & mold. The design of these estates just don't work, Skem is the same. The sad part of this is there's good people stuck there, they keep their houses clean & decent, but then you see the disfunctional people bring the area down. Those young lads were good kids... Shame the youth clubs have disappeared off the face of the earth. There's no jobs, they are encouraged to stay on, get qualifications go to uni, get a hefty debt & end up in a call centre or retail. And so it goes.... no wonder the birth rate has dropped, no prospects for the youth it's depressing!! Keep on keep'n on and stay positive 👍

I once cycled through Runcorn, and i made a wrong turn an got lost, I thought I'd turned onto the set of Shameless, it was like a square with a sofa by a power station an people sittin off all bevied. Began with a P cant really remember the name of the place, anyway I should find my way home soon haha.
How do you get a job as a security supervisor if you can't understand English? Also Billy you can Film anything, anyone and anywhere in a public place. Although, some peolple would argue that while it is a shopping Mall. It is owned and run by a private company and as such it is private property. Eg: If I open my garden to the public for a BBQ. They are allowed in, but it is still my private property.
Just an analogy.

It's earmarked for demolition and flats are being built there but it's probably taking ages for the planning to go through and then the housing association to get the cheapest contractors to throw the flats up

Moved from Toxteth to Castlefields in the late 60s into a bungalow with an indoor toilet and radiators it was like winning the lottery a great place to grow up community spirit and friendly people years later it got a bad reputation such a shame but there are some really nice parts of Runcorn pity i missed you bill would like to go for a bevvy with you sometime

On the question of filming in Shopping City. Shopping city is privately owned land with public access. Not public land. So that were filming would come into question.
Personally i dont see the problem with filming. And agree with your sentiments.
As for law, its a civil matter. Not a criminal one. So if action were to be taken, it would pertain to damages of private entitiys reputation or defamation for example.
On private land with public access, if you've been served notice (the signs) that you cannot film ans you do. It comes under breach of contract as opposed to breaking a law.
Just for future reference to keep yourself covered mate.

So glad we didn't move to Runcorn or Skem in the 60s I'm glad I grew up in wavertree
I done the 'double whammy.' Skem in 1969, then moved to Runcorn in 78. Been here ever since. Just like anywhere else, there are grim parts of Runcorn (Castlefields as featured) and there are some great areas. I've lived in both grim (Halton Lodge and Southgate) and great parts (Norton Cross, Higher Runcorn, and Sutton Park when it was new in the early 80s).
Skem was good in the early 70s but went rapidly downhill when all the factories started closing down.

Try living in Bradford for 15 years and Runcorn is just fine. I think you painted Runcorn in a bad light. Runcorn has a lot of nice areas. Castlefields is much better than it was in the 80’s. There are some run down areas like all towns have. To correct you on saying people came from the slums of Liverpool to Runcorn, my parents didn’t come from slums when they moved to Runcorn and my wife certainly didn’t. Look around all the nice areas of Runcorn, even the not so nice areas are better than living in Liverpool. One thing people notice when visiting is how many trees Runcorn has and historical sites. You also don’t get stuck in traffic due to having free flowing expressways. I would rather live in Runcorn, my home town.
It does have an obscure russian /east european town vibe to it.
Keep filming Billy and raising awareness of how neglected the areas are. Feel for the kids who have nothing to do.

Heya Billy, I live in Runcorn, the shopping city has always been funny over pictures and videos, a few locals had issues with them in past. yeah some of the estates are rough, but as you said a lot of history in Runcorn, you should of gone to the old town and seen where two pints of lager was filmed. what alot of people say about Runcorn is the council all live in Widnes so don't really care for Runcorn. the decks as you was looking at near the end of the video has had lots of issues with the cladding. with many people losing alot of money. as not much money in area alot of companys fail so then that makes less jobs and so on and so on. Runcorn does do well for bigger company's due to the area however (ideal near m56 airports and near river and sea.) if you ever go runcorn again i can give you more areas to look at.

What ever happened to youth clubs? Why did they just disappear? Not having them has stopped kids being kids. It's forced a generation to grow up too fast and has made them think they have to act out while walking the streets with nothing to do. I feel like a lot needs to be done now to change the mindset and that a cultural shift is needed. Runcorn Has never been great, granted. But it had community. Now it's a husk of its former self, clinging on for dear life. Another great video Billy

Castlefields was predominantly built up in the 70s local schools youth clubs the council actually had moneh great place to live now it's an absolute sesspool nothing to do no money getting spent apart from building houses and they've shut over 30 pubs down easily in the last decade

Such an ugly place, Literally the most disgusting looking 'houses' all grouped together, intertwined with alleyways, underpasses and random round-a-bouts everywhere, Absolutely nothing to do, young or old. Has to be one of the most depressing places to live in the UK. At least up north.
there is actually some really nice looking houses and really nice old buildings too, you just have to avoid the estates mostly and just look in the old villages that now make up runcorn.
theres a good few listed buildings too, although some of these are going or have gone due to a plague of arson attacks after planning permission to change the building gets declined...
He went to the area thats mostly the new town that was Liverpool's overspill. There's some beautiful areas in Runcorn if you go the right places.
I travel up to Runcorn every weekend from the midlands. My Mrs lives in Castlefields. I walked past that derelict pub this weekend just gone when we went down to the canal for a walk. Positives are you hear a lot of laughter from the locals, a lively bunch and the only trouble we had was some kids throwing a rock at the mrs window once. The negatives are in Castlefields I’ve never seen so many ally ways, a copper would have 0 chance of catching someone as there are no dead ends at all. All the kids wear all black, I call it the road man uniform, you just don’t see that in the towns of similar size in the midlands, kids just dress normal. And the estate has potential with lots of green spaces but there’s a lot of rubbish thrown out around the place.

I grew up 2 streets over from centurion row on shepherds row and in the 70’s and 80’s it was a great place growing up, we all went to the same schools and there was a youth club that was excellent, I went back about 5 years ago and the place was unrecognisable. No kids playing and it looked quite old and shabby,still have friends there now who say it’s gone a bit rough but believe me when I say we loved growing up there …suppose all estates need regenerating at some point but like other parts of the country they’ve been left to fall in to neglect and decline….damn shame

I left over 20 years ago. It was always a bit rough but its looking worse now. We had things to do in the 80s, youth clubs, community centres, boxing clubs. Nothing for those kids anymore its quite sad to see how run down its become
I grew up in widnes and it does have great people but it really is concrete city.
I have been in runcorn for almost 30 years now . There are other parts of runcorn the lovely noeton priory museum and gardens the canal, the huge woods all the greenery, the feilds.
You walked through a rough part of runcorn, and if you look hard enough, you will find those places in any town
