Sopranos is pretty much the show that made people realize tv shows can be cinematic and be taken serious and not just like seinfeld or friends. Breaking Bad and all the shows after it were because of how good Sopranos did.

Actually It’s the quite opposite, in the sense that she is deemed as one of better written/appreciated female tv character, similar to kim wexler from BCS. They have their ups and downs but Carmella is FAR from being hated as much as Skyler white by the general audience
Carmela is the inspiration of skyler's character in breaking bad....even walter white is like tont soprano.....skyler yeah you can hate a litttle bit, but carmelaa heell naag she was great as a character

The Wire wasn't even the best David Simon Baltimore-based show. Homicide: Life on the Street was much better, in my opinion. Even being on network TV, Andre Braugher, Ned Beatty, Jon Polito, Yaphet Kotto made a brilliant show.
Just a disclaimer, there will be lot of the godfather and goodfellas references in this show. So if u guys watch those movies, it will really enhance the experience

This is basically the start of the golden age of television. Tony's not just an anti-hero.. He's an outright villian, and the brilliance of this show is making you sympathize with these horrible yet charming characters. This show paved the way for Breaking Bad/The Boys/Walking Dead/Game of Thrones ect (Basically anything quality and dark). I still remember turning on random episodes as a kid to see brutal things, but I never sat down and watched it till perhaps 2009.
Sopranos gained a lot of popularity during the pandemic years. Somehow or the other a lot of really young people started discovering and watching the show.

You’re right about the scenes which are meant to be funny, the sopranos totally functions as a comedy at the same time as a drama. Kind of like the cartoonish moments in breaking bad but replace them with dark, gallows type humour.
@@AJ0223 nah I do, there was definitely a lot of dark humour in there, but a lot of the laughs for me came from how the scenes were composed, almost like Laurel and Hardy or something, where Sopranos will more often make me actually laugh at something terrible. There definitely are similarities but also differences.

The reason for the "revival" of sopranos is because all the people our age (mid 20s to early 20s) are now discovering it and discussing it with other people because, as kids it we could've never experienced it. It helps that it's an entertaining show that can grip a wide variety of people.

I, not knowing anything about it but knowing Sopranos as the mafia show, asked if she meant that, and she went “YES”. I wanted to watch the show but never got around to it, but when she mentioned the therapy aspect, it sounded so fun and original. For anime, I'd actually to love to see you try out Legend of the Galactic Heroes. It's nothing like the stuff that you normally watch on the channel, but it has the best writing and characters.

Funny thing actually is the therapist the actress Lorraine Bracco she was in this other mob movie Goodfellas as the wife. So when it came to the sopranos she was originally casted as Carmela but she didn’t want to be another typical mob wife character. Hence she became the therapist

For me what makes The Sopranos one of the best TV shows ever is the character development. They feel so real and relatable-not just Tony, but a wide variety of characters that you genuinely care about. I've never seen this in any other show.
COVID sent everyone back to watch the things they missed. Sopranos was number one show outside of like squid game and tiger King.. they also released a movie during that time. It's still living on that momentum, it's final breath in pop culture.. Like the Beatles doc.

COVID sent everyone back to watch the things they missed. Sopranos was number one show outside of like squid game and tiger King.. they also released a movie during that time. It's still living on that momentum, it's final breath in pop culture.. Like the Beatles doc.

Glad you're reacting to this, it's a fantastic show. BTW you should watch the classic mafia movies (at least Godfather and Goodfellas) or you'll miss lots of references. Lots of the actors from those classic mob movies are characters in the Sopranos, like Pussy, Christopher and the therapist

Good catch on the humor. It's not a pure comedy but there's so much comedy going on, every episode has its moments. You just can't help but laugh. Brilliant show.
