Great job guys! Yeah when everyone at a TLM Mass is there intentionally because they think they’re the only true remnant left they will be intense in their worship when compared to a normal parish Mass where many show up primarily out of obligation, cultural norms, or even geographical proximity and convenience. But the Catholic Church is just that: here comes everyone, saints and sinners alike! It’s not just the assembly of the pure and true believers. So, Protestant fundamentalists, and all heretical sects of history have been able to put on an outwardly more devout or enthusiastic “church service” when compared to the Church in communion with Rome. By this they fool many. In my life I’ve been fooled at times by this apparent paradox. First by the explosive growth and enthusiasm of Calvary Chapel ministries and then recently by the piety of radical traditionalism in the CMRI and the SSPX. I’m happy to be back in communion with the Pope and an indefectible Church even if the Gregorian chant is still missing!

Thankfully our choir director for the past 40 years has kept Gregorian chant alive and we are able to easily understand a TLM, sing in the congregation, and even sing in the choir for a High Mass! We are blessed! We even have an Archbishop who says the TLM in Western Oregon! God is taking good care of us in this supposedly liberal state!

Great video guys. Hit the nail on the head with a lot of these criticisms.
Couple things I wanted to ask Dom. Have you ever read any of Denis Crouan's books? The first book on the liturgy I read was The History and Future of the Roman Liturgy and I greatly appreciated it. Second, if this isn't too personal or anything, what church do you attend? I just like looking up parishes that use the newer missal with the appropriate reverence.

I have been wanting to get History & Future for a while, I think you may have just convinced me haha. Crouan’s book “The Liturgy Betrayed” is also very good.

Can you respond to the claim made that the New Mass was made on a napkin by Bugnini? I wanted to find the source of this and also are their any Acts of how the Eucharistic Prayers, the texts were decided on? Thank you!!

I applaud any man who can rewrite and revamp the entire Roman Missal on a napkin 😝

Bugnini’s book “reform of the Roman liturgy” goes into a decent amount of detail.
And no the actual claim is that one Eucharistic prayer was written on a napkin, which is also false. The reality is that a couple of sentences of a new Eucharistic prayer were written at a working dinner to meet a deadline, so hardly much of an issue, especially considering that writing would have then been reviewed and approved anyway.

Why did they alter the old missal at all? It’s so beautiful as it is! Even if the new Mass is done reverently, it still lacks the majesty of the old. I hope the Vatican will reform the ‘69 and crack down on the bishops who have created their own liturgy and rubrics.

The old missal is from 1962. It’s also a change.

@@thelogosproject7 Yes, but I heard a side by side comparison of 62 to 69 was 70% different. Surely the 62 wasn’t that different from the previous missal, or?

@@angelamalek you might have heard that from the documentary “Mass of the Ages” (which, I hate to say it, is a name that is rather derogatory to the other Catholic rites of the Church such as the Byzantines and the Melkites). Or you may have heard it from someone who watched that series. I don’t think I would be able to do justice to this topic in a TH-cam comment, but… although much was changed (and also much was restored from previous editions that had fallen off from the missal immediately prior to the 1969-which already shows that there is some question begging as to how the 70% statistic is measured), the changes were meant to restore the essence of the rite. That is what reform is supposed to do. Now reform is not always perfect, but so is that which needs to be reformed (hence the need itself-for reform). What this means is that liturgical books can always be criticized, but we should do so constructively, and never go against tradition by claiming that the books the Church has given us are evil or heretical or a poison to the faith. This has been condemned by Trent, Auctorem Fidei, and the constant teaching of the ordinary magisterium. This is a much vaster theological topic that is much more interesting than what is said in TH-cam videos. That being said, I’d like to (a bit ironically) recommend the video I have up called “Liturgy wars and schism.” The title is a bit sensational, but it’s an excellent sermon by Father Smith which will talk more to your question. I hope that helps! God bless.
