STARCRAFT FINALLY starcraft 1 remastered and starcraft 2 are worth playing through, and both--ESPECIALLY sc2, have a TON of cutscenes to analyze. most of them aren't literal blizard trailer level, but still awesome
HotS because I love seeing the scale with Terran and Zerg. LotV is definitely a close second. Makes me wish they had done something better with WoL, but it was more an announcement of SC2 than anything. If we're talking all of them, idk. Again, anything that shows scale is awesome. SC1 "Where is the air support" to see the BC overhead is awesome. LotV when the Golden Armada unleashes upon Amon. But also in SC1, the Sergeant just saying "Fire" at the Dragoon, has always stuck with me haha.
One Zealot dies to three Baneling hits, so he sacrifices himself to keep the splash damage from hitting his comrades. The attention to detail is brilliant.
Just a minor correction there, he sacrificed himself for the warp in pylon. Not his comrades. In fact, their whole squad were there to make sure the pylon gets put down so all of them were probably going to die, no point in sacrificing yourself for your teammate but for the objective.
@@kronask6417 Sure, but if the banes hit his allies, too, they’re all hosed. They need to hold out long enough for the pylon to warp in. Taking the banes out away from the group is good micro.
@@fighteer1 The group wasnt big enough for the banelings to matter. They deal increased damage to structures, so that would be really bad for the pylon that is warping in.
thats a deadmen mission for them, if pilon warp gets extinguished or destroyed before it can be used for reinforcements then they died for nothing, they had to make a beachhead for landing
The part with the Archon sacrificing itself is so brilliant. You can hear the charge, you can hear it building. You know that this is going to end in a ear splitting explosion or crash. But. No. It builds and builds and builds and.... nothing. Complete silence. Instead of something, there is nothing. It causes you to mentally stumble when you first experience it. In a way, the silence is so much louder than any explosion could be.
True but I would still have preferred a game-accurate explosion. Not something damaging but seeing something so huge just burst to nothing. Could still have that silence after.
@@yaelz6043 yea, it was an interesting choice to have the archon do something it has never done in game. But they did, and it was executed so well. There was no explosion, it was just collapse into a singularity.
@@yaelz6043 it'll be against the point of why they're there, though. The party is meant to guard the warping Pylon, and an actual explosion could destroy it.
It also fits the lore of archons. Every Protoss who dies joins the Khala as a type of living memory, but the two High Templars who become an archon will be gone forever. The building crescendo encapsulates their power well and the silence after is what the rest of the Protoss would experience from the sudden loss.
@@hoofhearted4"Do something they never do in the game". Pretty sure all the units are plenty capable of doing stuff that isn't present in the game due to gameplay or balance reasons. Marines won't be able to shoot down Battlecruisers or Carriers for example in lore. High Templars used to not possess an auto attack until it was added for QOL control. Ghosts don't show off their psychic powers in game.
Awesome choice! So this is not what's left of them, this is the equivalent of the D-day first wave. They're called "Tip of the Spear". Their main mission is to protect that pylon being built, because that's what enables the bulk of the force to start warping in. Also a small detail I loved: When they were showing how the Khala connects them, the last zealot in the slo mo shot ducks to dodge the Hydralisk strike coming from behind him, because another warrior in the group saw it and instantaneously relayed that information telepathically.
It's funny, cause they don't need a Pylon for that. They just need to fly in a Warp Prism lol. I'd actually assume a Warp Prism would have to have been how they got there in the first place.
Want to know the quickest way to make almost ALL of Starcraft fandom breakdown into tears???? Allow me lol "Zeratul: My life, for Aiur" .... im cryin with yall still lmao.
Probius is the hero of this cinematic. Also, I wouldn't call it a "hive mind", each individual has thoughts of their own. It's more like a "cloud storage", where an individual can access others'(living or not) thoughts and senses and memories and what they see and etc. Edit: I love this cinematic because if you know the lore, you won't be disappointed. 7:39 illustrates this very well. One templar(TA) initiates the ritual while the other one(TB) has a delayed reaction. Using the Khala, TB would already have known what TA wants. Merging in the lore is not a decision the templars take lightly. I say the animators really know their lore as you can see TB looking at TA, hesitating, before finally deciding to proceed.
MY LIFE FOR AIUR!!! (not often I get to use that battlecry these days) So Philip, bit of lore for you, this cinematic is the opening scene for the battle to reclaim Aiur, the Protoss (the blue aliens') homeworld and the first mission for "SC2: Legacy of the Void". The ruined buildings you see, those are Protoss buildings. As for the Khala, yes, that's essentially a hive mind nexus. And that floating pyramid thing, it's called a pylon (and is a major meme in the SC@ community - "you must construct more pylons"), and is why the Protoss could call in that big wave of reinforcements - the pylon basically doubles as a battery and a teleportation beacon, which you see the the reinforcement do big time at the end.
So for anyone curious this is an rts game made by blizzard and was originally released back in 2010 as starcraft 2 wings of liberty. This is the opening cinematic for its second and final expansion made in 2015 called Legacy of the Void. It follows the exploits of the Protoss and their Hierarch Artanis who is narrating this cinematic while trying to retake their homeworld of Aiur back from the Zerg Swarm that was lost during the previous game. The cinematic features mostly gameplay accurate depictions of roughly how all the units work in game for example the amount of time that crystal structure called the pylon took to finish construction was accurate to gameplay. The units represented on the protoss side featured in video at 1:15 are Center, center left, and far right the zealot the most basic protoss combat unit with dual melee attacks and the ability to rapidly charge at a target from rage to engage them. Far left and center right are high templar a powerful spell casting unit that can conjure electrical storms that deal heavy damage over time, can turn the stored energies of other casters into a feedback loop causing them to lose all stored energy and take famage per energy lost, and can merge i to an archon (depicted later in the cinematic) with either another high templar or a dark templar who isnt shown in the video but is an invisible melee unit that deals extremely high damage. Finally in the very back the robot is called a probe it is the protoss basic worker unit harvests resources and constructs protoss prefabricated buildings by opening rifts in space-time and summoning them from elsewhere to the battlefield the pylon it constructed provided access to the psionic matrix that powers other protoss structures and in the cinematic allows protoss warpgates the basic production structure to warp in units to any location covered by a power field. The zerg units shown are the Zergling the small nimble creatures are fast and cheap melee units and serve as the first available combat unit for the zerg faction. While the zealot is powerful the zergling is numerous and is created in pairs for half the price of a zealot (50 minerals as opposed to the zealots 100) effectively meaning you can have 4 zerglings for the same resource investment as a single zealot. The next unit is the baneling the green ball things are living acid bombs that suicidally explode when contacting an enemy or when killed by enemy fire. They deal cery high damage to units that are considered "light" armored such as zealots and high templar and despite exploding they never deal damage to friendly forces. Banelings are also mutated directly from zerglings where zerglings and most other zerg units hatch from a larval state back at their hatcheries. The tall snake like creatures eith the large scythe arms are called Hydralisks the cinematic doesnt do the best representation of this unit as it is primarily a ranged fighter by launching needle spines out of their carapaces at speeds faster than bullets though they do have an alternative melee animation ehen attacking at melee distance. They are also the only unit besides the archon in the cinematic capable of attacking air units Lastly the teo big boys the protoss Archon which earlier i mentioned is created by two high templar merging together is rather poorly represented from a gameplay standpoint. Its shockeave attack does not have anywhere near the range depicted nor does it deal damage in a line it insteaddeals damage in a radius around the archons primary target and the archon deals bonus damage to targets with the "biological" armor tag which includes every single zerg unit. The archon is very unique among all units in the game as it has the lowest hp of all combat units at 10 but all protoss units have a psionic shield protecting them and the archon has a massive 350 shield points which for comparison the zealot has 50 shield points but 100 health points. Archons also sadly do not have that implosion ability in game they are purely an attacking unit with a very good total effective health pool for its cost. The Zerg Kaiju is called an Ultralisk and it is thethird tankiest unit in the entire game. It is another melee unit but its quite expensive to make and zerglings have far more damage density but the ultralisk makes up for that with a cleaving attack that can hit multiple enemies and the third highest hp pool and highest armor in the game. It is also the fastest large unit in the game. Beats the archon in a head on fight. Some other fun facts. Merging into an archon is a suicide pact as the archon cannot prevent itself from burning through all its psionic energy that sustains whats left of the templars physical form the Khala mentioned in the cinematic is a sacred union of memories and emotions of the protoss race and lets any protoss who trains themselves into controlling it view any memory and emotions of any protoss in the khala living or dead and merging into an archon on top of killing onesself also cuts you out of the Khala. There is also another form of archon called the Dark Archon that can only be merged by two dark templar though this unit is not in the games multiplayer mode you can create them in the campaign. The Dark Archon channels the energies of the Void to manipulate both minds and computers around them. In the campaign they have access to two abilities 1. Confusion which targets an area and forces enemy units in the targetted area to attack friendly units for 10 seconds and 2. Mind Control which permanently gives you control of a targetted enemy unit instantly. It was originally introduced in the original starcrafts expansion brood war where it had access to mind control and feedback but also an ability called maelstrom which would stun any biological units in an area for several seconds. The Dark templar also known as the Nerazim are a tribe of protoss who decided to reject the Khala as they feared loss of individuality and were persecuted for this and forced to flee Aiur. Later on when the zerg conquered Aiur and displaced the Khalai protoss the Nerazim took them in and the two groups have united into the Daelaam which Artanis leads. Dark templat channel void energies which grant them the powers to manipulate the battlefield the main representatives in the multiplayer are the dark templar unit and the oracle which is a fast flying caster unit capable of deploying traps that freeze targets in time and revealing the area ahead of themselves. They also have a unique mechanic where their attack must be activated and drains energy while its active. Other nerazim abilities seen in the campaign include a modification of the typical zealot charge in which the nerazim zealot (called the centurion) briefly becomes stealthed and can charge through other units to reach its target and emits a stunning pulse on contact, the dark templat in the campaigncan quickly teleport between several targets dealing heavy damage and becoming invulnerable during the attack, and they can stop time for all hostile forces across the entire map for 20 seconds letting you do anything you want for that period.
one of the best cinematics I ever watched. so happy you are reacting to this one!! there are so many details and lore involved there, hope the loremasters join!!!
Oh, the nostalgia. What I love most about this trailer is that everything you see them do can actually be done in-game. This is essentially a close-up, 3D view of it. I’m confident that, with some micromanagement, someone could recreate every single scene from this trailer within the game.
with the archon (the big glowing guy formed from the two high templar) in lore they are two templar who have chosen to make the ultimate sacrifice, the archon is so powerful it burns itself out, meaning it can only exist for a short time, it is not something that is done lightly which you can see in the video. one starts and the other hesitates for a moment before he joins.
This is the StarCraft 2 version of D-Day, where that small party had to establish a beach head for their entire invasion army. The small droid (Probe) was building a Pylon to act as a beacon for their reinforcements to come through. As for the kaiju battle, the fusion monster is called the Archon, and they're the last gambit of all the High (and Dark) Templar. Essentially they're setting their power to overdrive and breaking their brakes in the process, and they wouldn't be able to stop until they burn out or explode. The enemy kaiju is called the Ultralisk, and canonically a human-sized being doesn't even reach its knees, let alone its huge overall height (just look at the Heart of the Swarm intro). If you want to do more LotV, Alone (Shakuras ending) is another great cinematic that's like this. I personally think that it's even better.
Hands down, the best game trailer ever made. Just so much detail and emotion, showing perfectly protoss, their bond, their sacrifice. Hard to pick a favourite scene, but if I have to, it would be the zealot protecting the building of the pylon by crushing into the banes, with his shield broken and the spirit leaving the body upon death.
Its not an hive mind, but more a psychic link between every individual. through which they can feel and share with the other. But its not always actively sharing, they do feel one another, but its not like they see each thoughts at every moment
The lone zealot giving the subtle glance to the pylon finishing the warp-in is my favorite shot of the entire video. It gave me chills the first time I saw that
So, to break down the lore and gameplay aspects of the trailer: Over the course of Starcraft 1, the Protoss military is ground down by the numberless Zerg swarm and their homeworld of Aiur is eventually invaded/conquered. Surviving Protoss are forced to pack up and leave. They spend most of the time between games recuperating and rebuilding their forces, and in the earlier (human and Zerg focused) chapters of Starcraft 2 you see indicators that they'll soon be ready to hit back. This cinematic, as noted by other posters, is basically one of their D-Day landing squads, securing a beachhead so the main invasion can start. Opening shot is a Protoss Nexus, or what's left of one - the hub structure of a Protoss settlement. They can absorb a lot of punishment and are usually in protected locations, so seeing one smashed up is good visual shorthand for the mess the Zerg have made of the place. We quickly see that all ground-based Zerg units can burrow, much to the chagrin of anyone who has to fight them. The iconic Zergling rush is in play here, attempting to swamp the enemy in more infantry than they can deal with. Our little squad is outnumbered, which is a fact of life for the Protoss - lorewise, they have a relatively small population compared to humans and Zerg. Gameplay-wise, their units are expensive, but powerful; you'll always be outnumbered, so you need to make the most of what you've got. Protoss players can mitigate this somewhat by deploying a pylon in a forward position as is done here, so reinforcements can be teleported straight to the front lines - the trick is keeping the enemy at bay long enough for the pylon itself to warp in. The zerg colony controlling Aiur is feral, but not stupid - the hive mind knows that pylon warp-in is a threat, and it deploys several Banelings - living acid bombs - to try and knock it out. The "Baneling bust" is a real ingame tactic for knocking out key structures to force an assault through. The Protoss also aren't stupid, and one of the Zealots sacrifices himself to shield the pylon and the squad (the Banes could have killed that whole group if they'd been clustered up). The Banelings didn't work, so the hive mind goes for the heavy artillery, bringing in a superheavy melee unit - the Ultralisk - with a fresh wave of Zerglings to make sure. No amount of Zealots is going to slow this big boy down, so it's up to the High Templars and their trump card: the Archon merge. Archons are immensely powerful psychic beings, so powerful that they usually burn themselves out of existence in a few hours at most. It's another sacrifice play for the team. "Power overwhelming!" is a stock Archon unit response when selected, and it's kind of an iconic line for the franchise. And yeah, that's about what Archons tend to do to Zerglings ingame, along with any other lightweight unit that makes the mistake of clumping up like that. Just one Zealot left after all that, and more Zerglings than you can expect one Zealot to handle. And then the pylon appears. With its power field active, the invasion fleet now has an anchor point to warp in reinforcements and demonstrate just WHY smart players pick off forward pylons when they can. Our final gameplay ability on display is the "Zealot Charge" upgrade, which our scarred survivor from the vanguard group uses to hurl himself into the fray once more. "Tip of the spear", indeed. On a final note: I love how you instantly picked up on the hopeful energy the trailer puts out. Starcraft 2 in general has hope as one of the major motifs of the story mode. You take control of each faction in a precarious situation and claw your way back to being a force to be reckoned with. LotV is especially strong in its "never say die" message, with the Protoss acknowledging that they're basically going to have to rebuild their civilization from scratch, and one member of the team simply declaring that this is an opportunity to build a BETTER civilization than they had before.
The "Power Overwhelming" at 7:46 was one of the selection quotes that could play whenever you clicked on one of those units in game, even all the way back in 1998. And yes, in game they are built by merging two high templar (the mage-looking folks that were doing lightning attacks in the cinematic)
the thing i love about the animations is they are really polished so that anyone can appreciate them but there is also so much detail that knowing the games makes these animation a gift that keeps on giving
Fun fact, the Probe (the little robot that calls the pylon) in this scene (really specifically this one) is a playable character in Heroes of the Storm.
SC2 was heavily criticized for ruining Kerrigan's character and having worse story than SC:BW. They've always made great cinematics but this is long after Blizzard was considered "peak".
There's an awesome Animatic that accompanies this Cinematic called "StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void - Reclamation" It features the leader Artanis(The voice over for the cinematic) and the Lead Zealot missing an eye from this Cinematic that actually gives a ton of flavor both to the Cinematic itself but also the Protoss Race as a whole. There's the running gag of saying "My life for Aiur" as Protoss die, but it really drives home what that actually means to the survivors of the loss of Aiur, what it means to Protoss in general, and what it means to take it back.
The brilliant part of this piece is how grounded it is in the mechanics on the game. This race, the protoss, can teleport units anywhere they have a pylon, or source. The star of the show is that little gold eyeball guy, a probe, a builder unit that can't fight at all. At 1:42 he sweeps around and starts summoning a pylon inconspicuously while the flashier characters fight, and apart from the narrator those characters are all sacrificed to a man giving cover to that work so that the last surviving unit can receive reinforcements. This is EXACTLY how a small vanguard might try to take a foothold against an entrenched position in the game itself. It's not just visual worldbuilding, its visually establishing gameplay as well and cementing a connection in the viewers mind between the exact gameplay rotations they're going to experience and an epic narrative of sacrifice for a larger goal.
The big thing in the background wasn't a ship, its a destroyed Protoss Nexus. The primary production structure of Protoss and what allows them to build Probes (the small spherical robot that called in the Pylon).
This cinematic always get me emotional. Especially when that last Zealot stands back up, ready to give his life for Aiur with no idea that the Pylon warped in and reinforcements are on the way. Dang it, now I have to go play through every campaign of both games again.
The backstory stuff did already happen. Back in 1998 the Fall of Aiur happened in StarCraft: Brood War (in game year 2503). The Zerg (bugs) overran the Protoss (aliens) homeworld of Aiur under the command of Infested Sarah Kerrigan AKA The Queen of Blades (Terran/Human Psionic Ghost corrupted by the Zerg) (Seen in the Heart of the Swarm intro cinematic ("Swarm" or "The Swarm" = Zerg)
This opening movie was incredible, even more so if you know the lore. But the next was even better: Artanis (Aamon) vs Zeratul. Hated by both casts, exiled from both worlds, forced to wander the void in search of whispers: eons old. But in his final moment, he shows the true unity of the Templar and Nerazim as he swears, almost PRAYS the words of his once-foes: "My LIFE for Aiur!" /ignite shadowblade Punches me right in the feelz every time...
well, from gameplay perspective - Protos Zealots (aliens with with glowing wrist blades) are really good melee fighters, and like all Protos units (and buildings) have energy shields , note energy shield breaking when first rolling Zerg Baneling (dangerous suicide land unit, in this case upgraded to roll instead of just crawling) impacts Zealot and its shield shatters and second Baneling kills Zealot. hovering aliens (two of the initial group) are High Templars , kinda magicians but not a close combat unit, note one got downed by Zergling (most basic Zerg land unit), they sacrifice themselves to join into High Archon. by lore there are no old Archons as only as last resort they resort to merging. Archon has really strong shield and is quite strong ground unit but there is not much matter under that shield (notice energy connecting parts of it) got cornered by Zerg Utlralisk (one of strongest Zerg land units). while i don't think Archon going down takes close units with it. that small Drone with one eye that makes that blackhole looking thing rebotic worker/"builder" unit, it set up portal to warp-in a Pylon (local energy generator) , and presence of Pylon allows warping-in troops
I would love it if you reacted to the Reclamation short. So few people react to it despite it being one of the best ones in all of Starcraft (and it also provides important lore for this cinematic)
TLDR: The golden blue light alien are know as Protoss know to be the firstborn, the location in the trailer is the Planet Auir, homeworld of Protoss. They got invaded from Zerg, the thing you call insect monsters invading every planet they come. After the invasion, Protoss had been push back forcing them to evacuate their homeworld becoming refugees. The Legacy of the Void is about they reclaiming their homeworld. The ruins you see is Protoss structure.
Hello Philip! I've been wondering, do you plan on covering Warcraft 3 cinematics? I've stumbled across your channel thanks to your WoW videos, and I'd love to see you dissect them as you did those.
Man, I hope you watch the second one at some point (the Heart of the Swarm cinematic, this is the third one) Heart of the Swarm cinematic is even more impressive than this one if you've never played Starcraft. BTW in that one the humans appear (We are the Terrans) 7:42 Fun fact "Power overwelming" is the phrase the unit says when it is summoned in the game, it's a nice touch that they put it in the cinematic. For me, this game has one of the most beautiful stories I've ever seen. Even the story of the Zerg (The monsters) is touching in a way, and ironically they are not the villains of this story, without giving too much spoiler they even become the heroes at one point.
I for the life of me can't find where you watched any other starcraft cinematics...unless it was part of a live stream that you didn't cut for a second video. Anybody know what it would be titled under? I looked through 3 years and crtl+F searched starcraft, but this is the only video.
Where are the other StarCraft 2 react videos? I’ve scoured your react videos and can’t find them. I’ve actually been patiently waiting for a year since it was mentioned in one of your WoW reacts that you would review them all
Although it might have been epic, I'm glad they didn't because it would have dampened the effect when Zeratul says it sacrificing himself to free Artanis of the Khala
It's not a hive mind for protoss. They simply communicate telepathically and do not have mouths. Verbal communication is considered primitive and savage to them. When they called in back-up, it was using in-game rules too. The probe started warping in the psi pylon at the start of the fight, which is how protoss build structures in the game and it finished warping in near the end. Protoss can also warp in units from the production buildings to any place that has a psi pylon. Terran trains their ground units from a barracks while Protoss warps them in from a gateway(in-game). If you haven't done the Heart of the Swarm opening, that one is better imo. Not just how epic it is in scale but also the animations and sense of doom.
Khala is basically work like an internet or shared network for Protoss mind. This is the reason why they are so powerful, even with just small number of them. They are sharing what they know during battle. But there is a caveat when connected to the Khala. Some of them feel too fishy about Khala, so they decided to unplug them self from Khala.
Something that's not explicitly stated but is obvious if you've followed the marketing for Starcraft 2, is that Blizzard is..... not exactly mirroring, but certainly playing off the concept of the original SC2 trailer, which shows nothing else but the creation of the most basic Terran unit (a marine) being suited up for battle. This trailer has a battle between many different aliens, but the heroes and the focus are: 1) A Zealot, the most basic Protoss infantry unit 2) A single Drone, the builder unit that has almost zero combat ability but can summon a Protoss structure anywhere on the map 3) A single Pylon, which in game generates energy in a radius around itself, powering further warp-ins and structures. These are literally *the most basic* things in the Protoss army, but when the Pylon completes it's warp-in, the immediate reaction for anyone who knows is "Oh, you're _FUCKED_ ." Because in SC2 you can warp in troops to anywhere on the map that has pylon power. If you rewatch it, the warp rift can be seen in the background multiple times, and the Protoss aren't just fighting because the Zerg are there, they're intercepting them and protecting the rift at all costs. They're buying time to allow it to finish it's construction, because it's the foothold that opens the floodgates for the true Protoss force to arrive.
I wish the in-game high templar (the floating guys that shoot lightning) and archon (the fusion) were as good as in the cinematic. Other than that, yeah, it's glorious.
@@chrayez Co-op Artanis Prestige 1 (the caster prestige) High Archons feel a bit more like how an Archon should feel in-game. They chuck out huge psi-storms that basically make all your units immortal (they heal your shields like 200 points over 5 seconds), and that just shred anything weaker than a hybrid. The shield regen on their massive shield pool, with the double-damage improved storms just really fills in the power fantasy that they don't have in PvP or even the singleplayer campaign.
Kind of starting on the wrong end here :\ Also these are so tightly knit to the realities of the game it is mindblowing if you've played the game even just a little bit ^^,
Blizzard used to be so amazing with their world-building, voice actor, lore, characters, and everything. WoW was also a master piece. Now we look at Blizzard and Overwatch 2... Overwatch when first introduced with its trailers held so much promise with its animations and lore/world-building. Game comes out, lore becomes non-existent. Why? Diablo 4 was even more hilarious. I went through the campaign and I quite enjoyed it. Then at the end, I asked if there would be more story. Nope. That's it. What? I love StarCraft. Amazing masterpiece of its time.
What always struck me as incredibly world building, is how both the Zerg (the monsters being fought in the video) and the Protoss both have their own different variety of hivemind, and how this plays out in the story. Spoilers incoming. The Zerg themselves are not evil, but rather their hivemind was used against them to enslave them and use them as weapons. Which the Protoss have used to justify the belief that the Protoss hivemind is inherently superior to the Zerg hivemind. Saying stuff like, "Protoss unity is stronger than those feable-minded Zerg," and generally being confident that the Protoss hivemind is pure and uncorruptable. But the plot of Starcraft 2 revolves around the Zerg, after having broken free from their enslavement, rediscovering their culture and identity. And in turn, the Protoss themselves have their hivemind turned against them to enslave them in service the Big Bad Villain. And the Zerg, the race that decimated the Protoss race, goes on to help save the Protoss from the same sort of enslavement the Zerg used to be victims of. A completely reversal of perspective that eventually leads the Protoss to sever their nerve cords, killing the Protoss hivemind so it could never again be used to enslave them. The Protoss thought they were different, superior, better lifeforms. And then they wound up in the same situation the Zerg used to be in. Has a bit of a, "you are not immune to propaganda" vibe. The Protoss thought they were too good to be vulnerable, and they were not. Fantastic storytelling.
React to "Dragon age Origins: Temple of sacred ashes" and "Dragon age 2 Destiny extended" cinematics. They're both by Blur Studios You won't be disappointed.
Watching this seems that archon is little underpowered in game. For unit that said power overwhelming it should have more damage because it dies pretty quick.

@@fighteer1 The group wasnt big enough for the banelings to matter. They deal increased damage to structures, so that would be really bad for the pylon that is warping in.
@fighteer1 Nah homie you got it right. The golds here think only from gameplay perspective and not story perspective. You got the right idea.
thats a deadmen mission for them, if pilon warp gets extinguished or destroyed before it can be used for reinforcements then they died for nothing, they had to make a beachhead for landing
Also a small detail I loved: When they were showing how the Khala connects them, the last zealot in the slo mo shot ducks to dodge the Hydralisk strike coming from behind him, because another warrior in the group saw it and instantaneously relayed that information telepathically.
oh man I never noticed that, thanks! that's so awesome! Blizz cinematics are in a league of their own.
Also the zealot's soul flies away when he dies to banelings.
Been years and yet I still pick up new stuff like the zealot dodging. Damn. A masterclass in storytelling.
Thanks for pointing this out!!
Allow me lol
"Zeratul: My life, for Aiur"
.... im cryin with yall still lmao.
En Taro Tassadar!
En Taro Zeratul!!!
MY WIFE FOR HIRE!
I tear up just thinking about this moment
I'll be honest, in the cinematic where Selendis says "En Taro Artanis!!" I teared up. Our boy's all grown up since Brood War.
Probius is the hero of this cinematic.
Also, I wouldn't call it a "hive mind", each individual has thoughts of their own.
It's more like a "cloud storage", where an individual can access others'(living or not) thoughts and senses and memories and what they see and etc.
Edit:
I love this cinematic because if you know the lore, you won't be disappointed.
It’s not taken lightly because it means they can never enter the Khala, unlike the Protoss normally do upon death.
The best way of describing it is literally as telepathy
MY LIFE FOR AIUR!!! (not often I get to use that battlecry these days)
So Philip, bit of lore for you, this cinematic is the opening scene for the battle to reclaim Aiur, the Protoss (the blue aliens') homeworld and the first mission for "SC2: Legacy of the Void".
You're finally doing some Starcraft content! I'm so stoked! Hope you do a whole Starcraft journey!
Its ALL gameplay and that is soooo cool. I love to play them, they are my favourite race and seeing all of this in this trailer
When you know the lore behind, the video "quality" skyrockets. I got chills everytime.
They are also the only unit besides the archon in the cinematic capable of attacking air units
Lastly the teo big boys the protoss Archon which earlier i mentioned is created by two high templar merging together is rather poorly represented from a gameplay standpoint.
If only we could suicide archons to kill a selected enemy with it x)
with the archon (the big glowing guy formed from the two high templar) in lore they are two templar who have chosen to make the ultimate sacrifice, the archon is so powerful it burns itself out, meaning it can only exist for a short time, it is not something that is done lightly which you can see in the video. one starts and the other hesitates for a moment before he joins.
Not only is it temporary, but it also eliminates their ability to remain in the Khala, they’re gone forever.
Just FYI "POWER OVERWHELMING" is one of the quotes this fusing unit (called Archon) says but also a CHEAT-CODE in SC1 that gives you invulnerability 😉
Yeah, Hive Mind is what they are fighting and what originally destroyed their world.
You definitely should check for SC2 LotV cinematics "Alone" and "Artanis vs Zeratul". Give me chills every time watching
That pylon warping in is actually the real time amount of time it takes to warp in. Which was super cool how they added that little detail.
This might be the best cinematic of all games
The lone zealot giving the subtle glance to the pylon finishing the warp-in is my favorite shot of the entire video. It gave me chills the first time I saw that
You really need to watch the rest of the cinematics for Starcraft 2. They are all fantastic!
So, to break down the lore and gameplay aspects of the trailer:
Over the course of Starcraft 1, the Protoss military is ground down by the numberless Zerg swarm and their homeworld of Aiur is eventually invaded/conquered.
This cinematic and the Starcraft 2 Heart of the Swarm cinematics are my favorite. Def should react to that one too.
It's more than 14 years already and the trailer still Amazed people at 2025, made me feel so god damn hype about the reaction
Fun fact, the Probe (the little robot that calls the pylon) in this scene (really specifically this one) is a playable character in Heroes of the Storm.
Back when Blizzard was still at the peak of storytelling and cinematics. Too bad they have fallen so low now.
SC2 was heavily criticized for ruining Kerrigan's character and having worse story than SC:BW. They've always made great cinematics but this is long after Blizzard was considered "peak".
@@adammccraw7379 I for one enjoyed it, i didn't mind her little romantic crusade i was mostly there for the protoss since i found them cooler
@@adammccraw7379 If you're at a point where you're onlyu criticizing for such minor details, you're still at peak.
It's insane how incredible the story telling was for just an RTS.
Starcraft was just a masterpiece in general, and a joy to play.
So cool!!
Thank you my love!
This cinematic always get me emotional. Especially when that last Zealot stands back up, ready to give his life for Aiur with no idea that the Pylon warped in and reinforcements are on the way. Dang it, now I have to go play through every campaign of both games again.
I find it near impossible to believe this man had never watched this before.
you gotta check out the Wings of Liberty and Heart of the Swarm cinematics as well
That's the fastest Archon fusion I have ever seen.
Oh my!, so long since I saw something about StarCraft. I've been in love with the cinematic of that game.
Omg STARCRAFT I'm so happy its seeming like its starting to get more recognition again lately
This opening movie was incredible, even more so if you know the lore. But the next was even better: Artanis (Aamon) vs Zeratul. Hated by both casts, exiled from both worlds, forced to wander the void in search of whispers: eons old. But in his final moment, he shows the true unity of the Templar and Nerazim as he swears, almost PRAYS the words of his once-foes: "My LIFE for Aiur!"
/ignite shadowblade
Punches me right in the feelz every time...
The Zeratul "Alone" speach is my favourite legacy of the void cinematic
Fun fact: The voice actor for Artanis (The narrator for this trailer) has the same voice actor as Arthas in the warcraft games!
well, from gameplay perspective - Protos Zealots (aliens with with glowing wrist blades) are really good melee fighters, and like all Protos units (and buildings) have energy shields , note energy shield breaking when first rolling Zerg Baneling (dangerous suicide land unit, in this case upgraded to roll instead of just crawling) impacts Zealot and its shield shatters and second Baneling kills Zealot. hovering aliens (two of the initial group) are High Templars , kinda magicians but not a close combat unit, note one got downed by Zergling (most basic Zerg land unit), they sacrifice themselves to join into High Archon. by lore there are no old Archons as only as last resort they resort to merging.
At 02:10 with the zerg running down the hill, it reminds me of a swarm of ants swarming down for food or going to war.
just realized the scene at the end, was the exact same stuff marvel used with capt america vs thanos!
I wish they would make a Starcraft animated movie using these graphics.
it's a great cinematic. one of my faves. the soundscape in particular.
I would love it if you reacted to the Reclamation short. So few people react to it despite it being one of the best ones in all of Starcraft (and it also provides important lore for this cinematic)
Power OVERWHELMING!!!!
The ruins you see is Protoss structure.
beautiful analysis bro, great video!
The run scene after warping in was basically reused in avengers end game
Hello Philip! I've been wondering, do you plan on covering Warcraft 3 cinematics? I've stumbled across your channel thanks to your WoW videos, and I'd love to see you dissect them as you did those.
Yes absolutely! I covered a few of them but I plan on going through them all!
Then I'll await them patiently. Thank you for replying.
all blizz cinematics are spot on!
Man, I hope you watch the second one at some point (the Heart of the Swarm cinematic, this is the third one) Heart of the Swarm cinematic is even more impressive than this one if you've never played Starcraft. BTW in that one the humans appear (We are the Terrans)
7:42 Fun fact "Power overwelming" is the phrase the unit says when it is summoned in the game, it's a nice touch that they put it in the cinematic.
For me, this game has one of the most beautiful stories I've ever seen. Even the story of the Zerg (The monsters) is touching in a way, and ironically they are not the villains of this story, without giving too much spoiler they even become the heroes at one point.
You might like StarCraft 2 heart of the swarm opening. There is also another scene later with kerrigan and mengsk that you might like.
Where is Wings of Liberty and Heart of the Swarm? Should've reacted to those first.
I’ve actually been patiently waiting for a year since it was mentioned in one of your WoW reacts that you would review them all
did you react tho wings of liberty and heart of the swarm opening cinematic too?
If that Archon had said, "My life for Aiur" when it was charging up to warp the Brutalisk out, I wonder if that would've turned out epic or not.
That zealot taking three banelings to the face to protect the squad and the pylon. Zealots use this line.
Pylo the Pylon and that Probe were the real heroes.
The Heart of the Swarm opening trailer one for Starcraft 2 is crispy as well, maybe consider checking it out too?
This trailer has a battle between many different aliens, but the heroes and the focus are:
1) A Zealot, the most basic Protoss infantry unit
2) A single Drone, the builder unit that has almost zero combat ability but can summon a Protoss structure anywhere on the map
3) A single Pylon, which in game generates energy in a radius around itself, powering further warp-ins and structures.
These are literally *the most basic* things in the Protoss army, but when the Pylon completes it's warp-in, the immediate reaction for anyone who knows is "Oh, you're _FUCKED_ ."
Because in SC2 you can warp in troops to anywhere on the map that has pylon power.
2015... which makes this scene the original, "Avengers! Assemble."
That sound design is almost that good in the actual game!
I would like to see your reaction to Halo Wars 2 Opening Cinematic Announcement Trailer. - Halo Wars 2 Official E3 Trailer.

we never understood how and why blizzard never made full feature length movies they would have been the best in the entire planet
And with it out legacy i get chiller
I wish the in-game high templar (the floating guys that shoot lightning) and archon (the fusion) were as good as in the cinematic. Other than that, yeah, it's glorious.
For something with the creation quote of “Power Overwhelming” archons really don’t overwhelm much 😮💨
@@chrayezit’s a balancing thing. Archons were very op in sc:bw
@@chrayez Co-op Artanis Prestige 1 (the caster prestige) High Archons feel a bit more like how an Archon should feel in-game. If you didn't scream my life for Aiur in the end with that final charge you are not a true fan.
Kind of starting on the wrong end here :\ Also these are so tightly knit to the realities of the game it is mindblowing if you've played the game even just a little bit ^^,
Please do a reaction of Starcraft II - Heart of the Swarm opening, EPIC
talking of sound design, your own mic is way too loud in comparison to the video
Do "Heart of swarm" !!
The building you see in the background is a ruin of a Protoss Nexus (Their main base). This is easily in my top 3 all time Blizzard cinematics.
My life for Aiur!
