Despite this not following true to the books, I think it is an absolutely brilliant series in its own. The actors are great, the chemistry between the three girls is just as it should be and I loved it so much when I was younger. I did also read the books and I love them equally, just for different reasons!
They combined all the elements of the books but put a modern twist on them.
They obviously had to hide some of the darker elements used in Wilsons books for the audience it was made for

Well no... I suppose your right but she DID have very frizzy hair, everyone in the books called her curly knob and her friend's nickname for her was Ellie-belly and Ellie-phant so she was chubby.
All good points, but i think the show is trying to represent that whatever you think of yourself isn't true, that all of us are beautiful
I'm a bit late lol, but yes she was chubby with glasses and frizzy hair. But the movie is only based on the book, sure in the book, Magda is not tanned, and her hair is blonde until she cuts it short and dyes it red, not dark and curly - they are so different looking in the episodes, but still the same personality. It was maybe hard to find actors that looked like the book characters :) x
I'm in Year 9 right now and Ellie definitely looks a LOT older than anyone I know, but I loved this series as a child so I'm not complaining!!

Ellie was meant to be a rolemodel for girls who aren't tall, or skinny and supermodel looking. Just normal. But this is actress (No offence, she's very good) but she's nothing like the books.
I completely agree, I love the actress but not as Ellie. I always loved Ellie but the casting was all wrong.

Not saying this actress isn’t pretty, but Magda in the books was blonde, blue eyes, slim; everything about her fit the beauty standard. But in this, Ellie is closer to the beauty standard than Magda, whereas in the books she is fat with frizzy hair and glasses.

UUHHHHMMMMMMM ...... Ellie........ she's not........ uhhhh...... so they took away the only thing that really made the book stand out? What? Is it too hard to give the main role to someone who isn't thin and pretty? To someone who actually FITS the character and matches what they're supposed to look like?I'm sorry but the only reason I liked the books was because the main character was a larger girl and being one myself it gave me a lot more confidence in life, so seeing that the show chose to IGNORE this factor has really irritated me! >:|

1 word:BASED. It doesnt mean it is going to be an exact replica. We all wish that ellie is fat and shy but still, it is a good movie. I really like it. I know this comment may get bad comments but most of you are slagging this movie off butin my opinion this is a good movie

The show has received criticism from fans of the book, a lot due to Ellie and Magda's appearances. In the book, Ellie is short, bespectacled, chubby, frizzy-haired, whereas in the television series, she is taller, thinner, has straight hair and doesn't wear glasses. Magda was also portrayed differently - in the series she is mixed-race with dark hair; in the book, she is caucasian and has blonde hair.
i don't see how having more poc representation is a bad thing.

@@rach3l202 poc representation is a bad thing if it’s not following the original creators works. if the character is black or poc then fair enough, but if they’re not then it comes across as fake and forced diversity, that’s why it’s always important to follow the authors image

When I first watched this I felt so much younger than her and thought year 9 was like huge know I've almost finished year 9 and I just remember her as so much older than she is in this 😂
I don't see Magda not being caucasian being a problem since being caucasian was not a major plot point to her character (she was just flirty, which can be done even if she's mixed race). But the whole point of having Ellie as a main character was to give us, girls who where chubby, had spots, wore glasses and were definitely not in any way model-y a role model. Like, take book 2 when Ellie has bulimia - seeing it through this actress' Ellie gives it a whole different meaning, instead of showing how society disproportionately tells chubby people to change themselves, the point will be that anybody, even skinny tall straight-haired spotless girls can get bulimia (which is a perfect valid point, just not what I think Wilson had in mind).

I KNOW RIGHT! Ive only JUST read the whole book, it took me.... Surprisingly only 5 hours! i just read the first page and BOOM! Before I knew it i read the whole thing. Its the best book ever!!! Also an emotional rollercoaster!! :)

Ikr 😞 Ellie was made so girls who weren't happy about themselves had someone to relate to! Casting a girl like that isn't fair to all the girls who looked up to Ellie. Ellie is a Typical, normal girl, who thinks she's fat and doesn't like the way she looks, but THIS "Ellie" isn't the Ellie any of us know. Its a thin, tall, model. I've personally always thought Ellie's pretty in the books, and this actress's just plain fine. No nothing about it. Plain fine, no faults, no frizzy caramel hair, no glasses, just fine.
Alright... I loved Jacqueline Wilson's books when I was younger but this is nothing like I remember them... Ellie was the shortest with curly hair and she was plump... And wasn't Magda blonde?!

Okay so these girls are way too old, they're at least 16 while Ellie, Nadine and Magda are supposed to be 13. Ellie is supposed to be chubby and lives with her dad, her stepmother and her little brother. Magda isn't supposed to be black (no racism intended). Ellie and Dan are supposed to meet in Wales in a castle and not while playing a stupid game. Nadine is supposed to wear makeup. This is totally stupid.
I remember the book, Girls Under Pressure, Ellie tried to lose weight because she is supposed to be really fat...

This is a dumb show/movie. Ellie is supposed to be chubby, with frizzy hair and glasses. She's supposed to make you feel normal. Instead there's just another skinny actress with perfect hair and skin. And they all talk like they're about 7 yrs old, with that actress poshness thing. It's impossible to follow this story like they are real people. Don't rate the show or casting choices, they should really have thought more about the audience. :(

The actress for Nadine is okay, but the person whose job is to act as Ellie is supposed to be a chubby, plump person who is a little short for her age, with frizzy mousey hair and eyes with glasses on. Whereas the person who should get a job to act as Magda should be a whitish person with blonde hair (no racism intended). Id prefer the characters to look the way they look in the bks.

That's just like saying who would take the role of a super model, all roles and people are equal just cause the role isn't considered "pretty" by horrible beauty standards doesn't mean it's a bad role and the fact they stuck to most the other characters appearances it kinda says something about the casting directors, don't you think 😊?
