Vlog 32: My first truck tow hang gliding flight with my own glider - Wills Wing Falcon 4 145!!

  • I finally got back on the truck. This was my first truck tow flight with Falcon glider. I had some dilemma about how I can transition my glider from Alpha to Falcon and get back on the truck safely. It took some time but I did my best and I can now say that my transition has been successful. I LOVE my Falcon glider, Blue! He is awesome and I think we’ll be together for the rest of my flying career.
    So many hurdles had to be overcome to get to this point. Outside of hang gliding, I have a normal life like anyone does, 8-5 office job with a ton responsibilities and my home life with never ending to-dos. Somethings in my life needs more attentions but I keep procrastinating or looking away…. I’m not good at balancing things, apparently. This year especially has been extremely hard… feeling overwhelmed all the time, mental and physical fatigue.
    This passion for flying, at least, has finally started to move to the right direction, is a huge relief and a hope. This whole year, I looked for a hope and I didn’t give up. “Great things take time” is literally that. Don’t give up on whatever the desire, hope, dream you have in your life because “giving up”itself is a hard thing to do. You can always consider “taking time” instead.

      All that you said, it hits me, means so much. Thank you. Hang gliding transformed my peaceful mediocre life into something so… vivid, intense and dramatic. My pilot friend described it as our life becoming like SD vision to HD vision. There is a consequence to such drastic change in life. Not gonna bore you with my life stories but I became very distracted by everything hang gliding and started procrastinating other parts of my life. Not good. I have ton of responsibilities at work, home life is filled with to-dos, collectively things got chaotic, stressful and very hard this year. But something is starting to shift now, I can feel it. My first chapter had so many lessons. Going into the second chapter, I feel like a different person.. a lot more mature(might not act like it but I am!🐥) I’ll never let this passion go but I need to be better at balancing my life. I hope to move forward with more considerate mindset for my life overall. At the end of the day, I only have this one body, can’t do it all, I’d break. Thank you so much for following my journey… I’m so lucky to have this mini support system in my channel☺️

      @@nanoraflyz Dear nanoRa, it seems there is nothing mediocre about your life. I can only imagine some of the difficulties and mountains you have had to climb and overcome many obstacles, and you're still doing it as we watch. One reason you have really being such an amazing and interesting TH-camr to follow is, YOU ARE REAL.... you show all the costs, pains and emotions involved in reaching your highs. You are a stunning person, heaps of personality and a beautiful lady. It is so enjoyable watching your skills and talents improve with each lesson. We should be paying you for the joy and entertainment you bring into our lives. There is one HUGE JOY coming for you, I believe the day will come when you hook into your first thermal and soar like an eagle . You will have a smile on your face that will last for days, and a memory that will last a lifetime. Can't wait to see you that day. But in the meantime please remember safety safety first. Yes, you do only have one body so please don't take any risk. We love your video's and what you are doing. Who know's you might make too Australia one day? You are amazingly awesome nanoRa..!!

      Thank you☺️ so…. That winch was hand made by Steve Wendt, the original owner of the truck, my first instructor. He bought steel plates cut it to the discs , welded them together and installed the mechanical parts… he was very talented and mechanically inclined, so Steve-made winch tow system!😁

    seems a lot of effort for a 5 mins flight !!! I Love Flying !!!!! try a Para-motor !!! you be flying above mountains in no time !!!! easier to pack away and travel about; you do need lighter winds for it but apart from that just as exciting and flights are generally around 1 hour to 3 hours !!!!

    • @nanoraflyz
      @nanoraflyz  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      With truck tow, unless you get up in thermic day, it is hard to stay up is what I’ve observed. But even with this method good pilots in a right condition can stay up well over a hour. But for me, right now the airtime isn’t my concern. Just getting to know my wing is the most important thing. Once I get out to mountain sites, ridge soaring can keep me up hours if I want a longer flight. So many people recommend me to try paraglider or para-motor… I think it’s because I’ve gotten motion sick as a child in paragliding tandem flight, I just don’t see myself enjoying the motion of paragliding flight as much as hang gliding. Im in love with hang gliding and love the speediness of it makes me feel like becoming a bird, and it can handle winds much better is also a crucial reason I’m sticking with hang gliding. Beauty of truck tow is that you don’t have to breakdown, load up the glider and setup again to go again!😁

    Wonderful flights Nano. It is still difficult for me to see the flight park without Steve in it, I haven't been back there since he died. I need to figure out how to get back there but I haven't flown for over two years and I never got the chance to truck tow. I remember the transistion to the falcon. I love the way it feels too. It becomes part of you when you fly it. As far as being too high on your base, if you just fly back and forth on the base you can lose altitude until you are at the desired final altitude. Basically, if I turn on base and I am to high i will fly past the runway/lz, after a bit I'll turn 180, fly back to the end of the runway/lz. If I am still too high, I will fly past again and then do another 180 back to the end of the runway. Kind of doing stretched figure eights, always turning into the wind on the 180.

      Hey Ray, I feel like.. you might feel better once you get back on the air. I know you had to take break for your personal reason. If you are ready, slowly start again! Thank you for your tip! There are a few options I guess😅 I’ll try different methods depending on the site, how much I need to shed etc. Thanks so much for commenting😊 again hope you can get back in the air…

    Beautiful and inspiring. Thank you, Nano. And those landings!! Flawless!! There are lots of things you can do to bleed off altitude if you come in too high. I recommend staying at the downwind end of the runway and doing a few figure eight turns over the tree line or even over the beginning of the runway. Do as many figure eights as you need to get as low as you want to be, then turn final. Beautiful job, Nano. 👏🏻👍🏻

      @@nanoraflyz btw, doesn't it look like you're hanging high above your base tube when prone? Your arms look straight holding the control bar. Shouldn't there be like one fist distance between your chest and the control bar? A lower hang means better leverage for pitch and roll control.

    • @nanoraflyz
      @nanoraflyz  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@skeetzoidya I’m aware, they normally say two fists. Mine is almost three. I’ve always flown at that height. I was actually thinking about bringing myself a little bit lower for having the better leverage like you said. I felt like I could pull in more in landing if it was slightly longer.

      Steve Wendt taught me!!! I’ve been thinking… your landing can improve by your familiarity to the site?! I feel like that. All my best landings have happened at this park, but I’ve flown here the most so statistically that makes sense…. But just knowing when to flare, knowing the site does some kind of magic.. just my instinctual opinion/observation🤓

    I have been following you for a while now. It is wonderful to see your journey of Hang Gliding. Sorry for the passing of a friend, Steve. A little about myself I have a H1 and have my own glider, but I had to stop flying last summer 2023 and put it on hold I thought. I went to see my surgeon because I have back problems and was advised by him in May of this year that I should not do the sport. I am still dealing with the heartbreak of a life long dream, flying like a bird is gone. Now I have to get the courage to sell my glider, maybe next year. I know in the future, I will do many tandem Hang Gliding flights. When you landed on that first flight I saw how high you were and how you landed that would of just killed my back. I just have to put my faith in God, and know that he is watching over me. Keep flying, and I hope one day you make it to Yosemite and fly there. By the way, those two flights were fantastic you did a great job. I will definitely be watching in the future. I sent you a link of my adventures in Yosemite when I watched a few years back, hang gliders, flying off and landing.

      Thank you for sharing your story. Im sure you’ve thought through your options, trike hang gliding, too. You got medical professional’s advice and now reconsidering about flying… That’s got to be really hard for you. But I want to say, if you decide to sell your glider, it’s “a pose”. You are taking a pose about pursing your dream. I’m selfish so this is just my opinion. Life circumstances, including your physical ability can change, improve over time (of course with relentless efforts). Nothing stays the same. For now, you are taking a pose. And if you end up existing from the sport, I really want you to know and remember that you are one of very few badass people in the world that got into the sport and got a rating. It is rather a moment to feel proud. Again, it’s a pose for now. We know nothing about tomorrow. Hang in there.
