You know someone is a beast when the south african forwards are like he was "an absolute monster". Sheridan is in top 0.1% of strongest rugby players ever.
It still surprises me that they didn’t take him to Australia for the lion tours in 2013. At the time he was dominating the Top 14 and kept Gethin Jenkins on the bench! Plus if there’s one man to destroy the wallaby scrum it’s Sheridan
As a Welshman I loved Gethin Jenkins. Really amazing, world class rugby player. But in my view, Sheridan should have been the Lions first choice test match loose-head on the 2009 tour. I dont think South Africans fear anyone, but they were definitely wary about Sheridan's set piece prowess, and insane strength and power. Given that John Smit was playing tight-head at that time, putting in Sheridan to scrum against him, and most likely dominate him, would have been a BIG problem for South Africa.
Just before that 2007 World Cup game against Australia, think it was the Autumn Internationals 2006 he absolutely destroyed Australia, more so than in the RWC game. Brilliant. South Africa just about nullified him in the final, although if refereed with modern standards around the scrum, England would no doubt have been given more penalties in that area.
The thing about Sheridan is that he doesn't look particularly enormous stood next to his rugby peers; he was just an Olympic standard power lifter and highly skilled at directing that power.
Was lucky to watch him playing no.8 for Bristol against Bedford many many years ago. He was immense that afternoon. You knew immediately that you had witnessed a future international great playing. Top top player
Awesome tribute video. Sheri was a legend, a true destroyer of worlds. Watching the Lions clips from '09, I am reminded of just how incredible that series was and how incredible that Lions team. was. I still can't believe the Boks beat us. Given the calibre of the team the Lions took, I think in hindsight that John Smit's greatest achievement was perhaps not the RWC win, but the Lions series victory.
Sheridan and hayman in the same team should be against the rules. Loved watching him at sale and he was a beast at Bristol I think it was when he played 2nd row
there were gaps between sheridans arse and the flanker and second-row that was supposed to be pushing him. Sheridan could demolish a front row singlehandledly.
@@Waywind420 I agree that he was a pest - but he didn’t get the nickname ‘Enforcer’ for nothing. He was a real solid forward, especially in the right areas. Tackling, rucking, mauling, ball carrying. He was a real powerhouse.
@@DRM1891 I guess I didn't word it correctly. Bakkies was strong, and scrappy. But there were plenty of other forwards around that time who would have been just as strong or even stronger, but few were as scrappy as him. @@Waywind420 yes I see what you mean. Bakkies didn’t seem to mind or care about his dirty antics being so visible. I guess as well as being a strong rugby player, he also loved pushing the boundaries and trying to intimidate opposition players. sure, respect,he was very strong and that was my concern for the 2007 wcf but luckily as John said,he just scrummed into Sheridan and this nullified his impact.
I'm pretty sure Carl Hayman done him in the All Blacks v England or lions, this game was Maori All Black game early in his career.....both awesome props.
A truck and a trailer! Who was guaranteed to forget to bind at least once a test to give up a penalty. There it is first highlight no bind flailing at the scrummy outside shoulder dropped slowly crabbing.

@@AAdams456 agreed, he was an absolute gent to interview, injury took away a great of the game. There isn’t a loosehead I’d have in front of him in my starting XV
But he couldn't out scrummage Adam Jones on Sky AS did 350 ish kgs Jones did almost double that. He went from the best prop in the world to a rule change that ended his career

Really good point! From the rugby nation that has arguably produced some of the toughest forwards to play the game. High praise indeed.
Immensely strong man, yet modest and a gentleman off the pitch. A ‘proper’ rugby bloke 👍🏻
The silent warrior. Thank you Andrew for such brilliant rugby x
He was immense in the England Australia world Cup game in 2007, arguably won the game for us - he was monstrous

Prime Andy Sheridan at loosehead, and prime Carl Hayman at tighthead.
Would've been a long day at the office for their opposition!
3 top class props in that vid , Sheri and hayman the calsberg front row and Julian white a beast in the scrums

Not only super strong but quick too. Great player for Sale.
I used to work at sale when Sherri was there, huge bloke but a quiet almost shy man off the pitch !! Good man !!
The thing about Sheridan is that he doesn't look particularly enormous stood next to his rugby peers; he was just an Olympic standard power lifter and highly skilled at directing that power.
At 195 cm and 128kg, he is a big dude. Very lean prop
Power lifting is not an Olympic Sport - could be maybe should but currently it’s not.
he looks comparable in size to Bakkies B when they went nose to nose and Bakkies was friggin enormous
@@alastairrobinson7533not really comparable, he was much bigger and Botha was taller

Got to be up there as a top trumps dream combo.
No 8 at Bristol I believe, I met him in an airport queue in the South of France a few years again - complete legend.
He wasn't really appreciated enough in his time. Imagine if we had him in the semi-final vs the Boks last weekend. We'd be in the final.
😓😓I don’t want to hear anything about scrums after that semi final.
merci pour the memory
You forget how good he was as a ball carrier, given how much he destroyed opposition scrums. Must have been fun to see him getting a run-up at you :)
Just don't make the mistake of going high. He won't notice. Round the ankles is the only was too stop him.

My son, Andrew, was (is) the same size as AS! He played Tighthead follow advice from Cobus Visagie!
Cobus Visagie, one of my idols growing up, I moved from loosehead to tighthead because of Cobus, my team mates started calling me Visagie..😆
I miss this legend.
On his best days he was unplayable
Sheridan V Bakkies is one heck of a match up. However notice how Bakkies only pushed Sheridan back once his back was turned 🤣
I think bakkies was aware he might not win this one
Bakkies wasn't that formidable physically (compared to other forwards), he was just a pest and willing to scrap at every opportunity.

Real scrums. The reason iv got constant pins and needles. Haha. Did Shez stop playing because of injuries or did he just retire?
