I was at Sandown on this day, standing down at The Pond Fence with my father. Seeing Arkle from such close range left a lasting impression. There really will never be another.

Arkle even coming to the end of a race doesn't shorten his stride shows what a fantastic horse he was he really had everything in his locker and a great temperament as well
I am 63, I watched these races and the great Arkle Mill house races. Arkle is the greatest jumper that ever lived and I am moved to tears. I am lucky to have watched this beautiful animal race.

I just watched it again Chris, I tear up I can't help it. Part of it is memories of my youth but also watching perhaps the greatest steeplechaser that ever lived. Last year I drove from Dublin to Kildare and saw his skeleton that is there in memory of him. I hear there is another bronze statue of him further north. I was in England to and went to see a statue of Blakeny as this Derby winner was owned and trained by Arthur Budgett in the village just up from Lower Heyford where I lived as a kid. Funny thiong is that Arkle and Mill House had these Irish/English battles with Arkle winning the battle but Mill Hoiuse was an Irish horse too trained in the UK by F Walwyn I think
I remember my late Father telling me how good Arkle was, he said he was the best steeplechaser he had ever seen and he watched a lot of horseracing i can assure you.
What a great weight carrying performance, the greatest Arkle. I loved Rough Tweed he was a good handicapper. No one nowadays has the minerals to commit such a great horse into handicaps

Remember that Arkle was a freak. When Himself died, the post-mortem showed that his heart was around 50% larger than normal for a Thoroughbred. Half as much oxygen AGAIN coursing though his veins. No wonder he was The Greatest. He would trounce any other horse of any era.
No you're totally wrong . He never ran against the likes of dessie or kauto. We all know they fiddled when giving lumps of weight away . Also best NH horse ever is RedRum arkle wouldn't of completed he would of blew up

i went with my dad when arkle and mill house first met in the hennesy gold cup at newbury it was a typical winters afternoon fairly foggy arkle slipped at the 2nd or 3rd last but mill house was the better horse that afternoon mill house was a very good horse fantastic jumper but arkle was brilliant the best i have ever seen.
Apart from reputation I dont have a great knowledge of ARKLE but old school tell me he was in another league, From the race I just watched I would say ARKLE jumped for fun and was probably rarely tested unless giving lumps of weight, Not many horses jump for fun around Sandown / this fella looks better than what I have heard / a real privalege to watch !!!

If you study Denman's win two years ago you will see that his gallop around the home turn was almost Arkle like in strength.However,he definitely began to tie up on the hill which allowed a probably under-form Kauto Star to gain on him. Arkle, however, would have been out of sight with the combined speed and gallop of both (and then some! )-and that is why at the home turn you could often see "Himself" having a wee look round to see if anything more interesting was happening!
when did i ever say that arkle would definitely do that.. all i ever said was that arkle is the greatest!.. which he is!! check out his record.. he won 2 gold cups on the bridle by 20 + 30 lenghts for starters.. get back to me when kauto does that..
I was born only 5 months before Arkle won his first Gold Cup , so I haven't the memories of the time. I do think it extraordinary, however, that Flying Bolt was in the same stable as Arkle and is still the second highest chaser in history. It is easier to see it as less extraordinary when you consider the lower ranks, with Denman and Kauto Star, Hurricane Fly and Faugheen (tomorrow may either cast the latter name into oblivion or the stratosphere), and, don't forget, Dickinson's famous five, all, respectively, being stable mates, and to therefore take note that the same stable often produces contemporary stars, but it would still take a huge leap of my imagination for me to think that Arkle, right, would have been beaten at level weights in a Gold Cup - even by a neighbour.
These are micky mouse races . Desert Orchid would of ran him ragged just like he did to the Irish grand national field . Red Rum would of trounced him round Aintree . Easy to carry top weight against horses 40lbs below you're ranking
arkle was a one off , best performances, other than arkle were desert orchid 1988 whitbread, carvills hill 91 welsh national, denmans first hennessy win and red rum 1974 english and scots nationals imo.
I would add the great Sprinter Sacre, 2013 Champion Chase ... but he was a two-miler. Best performance in defeat ... Crisp very nearly giving lumps of weight to Red Rum in the 1973 Grand National

But if you really want to compare him to Arkle then stick 12 stone 7 pounds on his back in an Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse and we'll talk about it afterwards. P.S. I was born in 1963.When I was nine years of age I used to walk home from school with a chap called Liam who loved racing.He was a Pendil fan and I knew Captain Christy was better.Then I mentioned Arkle and he declared that Pendil was better than Himself too.Even at that age I knew that I couldn't really take this chap seriously any more. More years pass and it's Best Mate, now it's Kauto Star. At this stage it's a bit like the second coming. I'm one racing fan who knows how long the wait may be.
Look what happens at 2.32 in this video and then visit the YT video of Red Rum in the 1977 Grand National. There, at 4.54, you will see the exact same thing, a jockey on a horse that's trying to catch a legend looks over his shoulder and wonders can he stay second !

What I want to see is Denman and Kauto Star both at their best. If that happened my head would say Kauto and my heart Den.There's something about the big old-fashioned chasing battleship about him and I'd love if Kauto didn't quite get past him.They deseve two each anyway ..... maybe something else will win.

Captain Christy would have smashed Kauto to pieces in the 75 King George when he demolished a top class field not a field of glorified handicappers. Yes Kauto is a very good horse but he has failed in both attempts to concede weight....sh hd win against a regressive handicapper Lami & defeat against veteran Monets Garden. For me the best since the days of Arkle was Desert Orchid. His efforts in handicaps were ace
I was impressed by the second horse. To his credit, he gave Arkle a race. Not sure how much weight he was getting from Arkle though ... a hefty amount I guess.

Arkle was the greatest and the fact Mill House got so near to him at levels means that Kauto, Best Mate, even Captain Christy would have been out with the washing against both.
Most racing folk accept that Arkle was the supreme chaser. Would anyone be surprised at my nomination for the second best ? Wait for it................Mill House! If they had not happened to coincide how many Gold Cups would he have won and how great would be the debate about the mythical dream encounter? Alas for the great Mill House the question was fully answered but for my money he got closer to Arkle at levels than any other we've seen would have. All the rest would race for 3rd.
12 st 7lbs, that's half a stone more than horses are allowed to carry now to begin with. I don't know why folks have to try to pick pieces in Arkle. Maybe because we all like to justify the authenticity of our own experience. Arkle would compete with any chaser who has run since. If the equine species has evolved so spectacularly during the past 50 years (which it hasn't) making horses of today so advantaged then Arkle would simply have to give less weight. How should we arrange the match, transport todays lot back then so they race under the conditions and from the training facilities of that day? Or do we beam Arkle forwards to todays conditions, modern graded events, etc.
Maybe.. the most gifted horse to ever grace a race track.. flat or jumps.. it would take a horse rated 160+ on the flat to be compared to Arkle.. His rating of 212 is simply mindblowing.. To make a comparison, Frankel would beat Sea The Stars and Dubai Millenium 3 or 4 lengths over 10f.. Arkle would beat Kauto Star 21 lengths and Denman 29 lengths over 3 miles.. That almost defies imagination.
BoS was very easy to make excuses for, but I do think some were valid. He was surely injured in that first Gold Cup fall.Many horses had consistency and many had brilliance.Very few had both. And in saying that I know I have to remember the Golden Cygnets, Bright Highways, Killineys etc. of racing. Oh! and I forgot about Sea the Stars - just another great racing career cut short , cynically speaking ! I'm enjoying this , we'll have to disagree on something soon.
Regaining the Gold Cup is not such a distinction when you consider that you have to lose one to regain it. Arkle never needed to regain it and to be fair neither did Best Mate, but then, he never met a Denman.
How right you are. There is this sillyness about who was best. We will never know because the changes made some years ago to the maxium weight to be carried in handicaps. How can you compare. I know who I think was best and that is my personal choice. Each to there own. We may have another super star with Sprinter Sacre!!
Arkle is the best I know of for jumping horses. Sprinter Sacre was good also for a while, but then went off a bit. Arkle was a one off - a bit like Ribot in the gallops.
Remember - in Arkle's heyday, there were two handicaps in operation, depending on if Himself was running. Under normally handicapping, EVERY other horse would have been out of the handicap... THAT is class of a differentr order...
@alipitogen Kauto Star only just conceded 10lb to regressive handicapper Lami by a shhd & failed to concede a stone to veteran Monet's Garden. What makes you so sure he'd stay 3m5f (barely gets Gold Cup trip - won poor one & beat a sick Denman in other....fell or faded in rest). Kauto Star is a great horse but he is no weight carrier. The reality will hit you mugs come Gold Cup day.....Long Run & Tidal Bay to dominate.
no, its 21lbs which roughly translates as a 15 lenghts win for arkle on level weights.. one can never be totally sure to the lb how accurate these ratings are and of course they will never meet as they're from different generations but kauto would definitely have a chance against arkle in receipt of 21 lbs!! all sorts of things would come into it .. jumping.. trip.. ground! no 2 races are ever the same.. ya just never know!!!

His record against those two horses reads Played 8 Won 3 lost 5 - consider this: a Desert Orchid in decline, conceded over a stone to youngster Nick The Brief who had beaten no less than Carvils Hill at levels. Nick The Brief next time up wins the then equivalent of a grade one chase by a distance. Thats how GREAT Dessie was so imagine ARKLE!!!??!!! Don't take much thinking..
Michael Seth-Smith. He also commentates on Foinavon's Grand National win in 1967. I recognised his voice from that and luckily as I suspected Peter O'Sullivan said his name when passing over commentary!

kauto only runs grade1s thats what all the top horse today bar denman do. racing has moved on from arkles days its not about handicaps its about grade1s.
the only level weight argument involving arkle up for debate is the flyingbolt one.. (also trained by tom dreaper and officially rated 2 lb inferior to "himself") .. some close form lines involving" height o fashion" suggest he might have had his measure, but they were kept apart so we'll never know for definite..

You fool, kauto star couldn't give 35 lb and win a race. There 2 handicap systems. Onr for races with ARKLE and without ARKLE. Kauto couldn't give weight away. He only ran in conditions races. Conditions that suited him.

Arkle was a great horse but probably no greater than Golden Miller or Red Rum. But Arkle was the first TV equine star and that has given him the magic. It was Peter O'Sullivan who largely created the myth - and he was the greatest of them all.

I was born in 1963.When I was nine years of age I used to walk home from school with a chap called Liam who loved racing.He was a Pendil fan and I knew Captain Christy was better.Then I mentioned Arkle and he declared that Pendil was better than Himself too.Even at that age I knew that I couldn't really take this chap seriously any more. More years pass and it's Best Mate, now it's Kauto Star. At this stage it's a bit like the second coming. I'm one racing fan who knows how long the wait may be.

What I want to see is Denman and Kauto Star both at their best. If that happened my head would say Kauto and my heart Den.There's something about the big old-fashioned chasing battleship about him and I'd love if Kauto didn't quite get past him.They deseve two each anyway ..... maybe something else will win.

Captain Christy would have smashed Kauto to pieces in the 75 King George when he demolished a top class field not a field of glorified handicappers. Yes Kauto is a very good horse but he has failed in both attempts to concede weight....sh hd win against a regressive handicapper Lami & defeat against veteran Monets Garden. For me the best since the days of Arkle was Desert Orchid. His efforts in handicaps were ace

These days the only handicap where you would see a very high class horse giving lumps away would be the occasional one who runs in Grand National.
@TissuePrices I know Kauto Star is a brilliant horse and I'm a fan.I would not like to see this happen but if they stuck 12 stone 7 pounds on Kauto's back and sent him around Fairyhouse in the Irish Grand National(see Arkle on yt in it) I know what would happen. Top chasers are now wrapped in cotton wool. Arkle was the greatest and the fact Mill House got so near to him at levels means that Kauto, Best Mate, even Captain Christy would have been out with the washing against both.
Most racing folk accept that Arkle was the supreme chaser. Would anyone be surprised at my nomination for the second best ? Wait for it................Mill House! If they had not happened to coincide how many Gold Cups would he have won and how great would be the debate about the mythical dream encounter? Alas for the great Mill House the question was fully answered but for my money he got closer to Arkle at levels than any other we've seen would have. All the rest would race for 3rd.
I know it's a bit whimsical but can you imagine a 2 and a half mile chase with Arkle, Millhouse, Crisp and Red Rum?

12 st 7lbs, that's half a stone more than horses are allowed to carry now to begin with. I don't know why folks have to try to pick pieces in Arkle. Maybe because we all like to justify the authenticity of our own experience. Arkle would compete with any chaser who has run since. If the equine species has evolved so spectacularly during the past 50 years (which it hasn't) making horses of today so advantaged then Arkle would simply have to give less weight. How should we arrange the match, transport todays lot back then so they race under the conditions and from the training facilities of that day? Or do we beam Arkle forwards to todays conditions, modern graded events, etc.

Maybe.. the most gifted horse to ever grace a race track.. flat or jumps.. it would take a horse rated 160+ on the flat to be compared to Arkle.. His rating of 212 is simply mindblowing.. To make a comparison, Frankel would beat Sea The Stars and Dubai Millenium 3 or 4 lengths over 10f.. Arkle would beat Kauto Star 21 lengths and Denman 29 lengths over 3 miles.. That almost defies imagination.
BoS was very easy to make excuses for, but I do think some were valid. He was surely injured in that first Gold Cup fall.Many horses had consistency and many had brilliance.Very few had both. And in saying that I know I have to remember the Golden Cygnets, Bright Highways, Killineys etc. of racing. Oh! and I forgot about Sea the Stars - just another great racing career cut short , cynically speaking ! I'm enjoying this , we'll have to disagree on something soon.
Regaining the Gold Cup is not such a distinction when you consider that you have to lose one to regain it. Arkle never needed to regain it and to be fair neither did Best Mate, but then, he never met a Denman.
Brasher won the last Scottish Grand national at Bogside jimmy Fitzgerald up.

That was the race he got injured. And never ran again and he still finished 2nd

How right you are. There is this sillyness about who was best. We will never know because the changes made some years ago to the maxium weight to be carried in handicaps. How can you compare. I know who I think was best and that is my personal choice. Each to there own. We may have another super star with Sprinter Sacre!!
Arkle is the best I know of for jumping horses. Sprinter Sacre was good also for a while, but then went off a bit. Arkle was a one off - a bit like Ribot in the gallops.

Remember - in Arkle's heyday, there were two handicaps in operation, depending on if Himself was running. Under normally handicapping, EVERY other horse would have been out of the handicap... THAT is class of a differentr order...

no, its 21lbs which roughly translates as a 15 lenghts win for arkle on level weights.. one can never be totally sure to the lb how accurate these ratings are and of course they will never meet as they're from different generations but kauto would definitely have a chance against arkle in receipt of 21 lbs!! all sorts of things would come into it .. jumping.. trip.. ground! no 2 races are ever the same.. ya just never know!!!

Michael Seth-Smith. He also commentates on Foinavon's Grand National win in 1967. I recognised his voice from that and luckily as I suspected Peter O'Sullivan said his name when passing over commentary!

the only level weight argument involving arkle up for debate is the flyingbolt one.. (also trained by tom dreaper and officially rated 2 lb inferior to "himself") .. some close form lines involving" height o fashion" suggest he might have had his measure, but they were kept apart so we'll never know for definite..

No better than red rum? you cannot be serious. Red rum was a good horse, a great one, no. He was a course specialist which resulted in his legendary status. The grand national is a handicap, not a grade one race. Arkle would of given him two stone at least.
