    Millhouse was a great horse he was just unfortunate to be running against the greatest chaser that ever lived

    Wonderful to see the great Mill House at his best and deservedly win the Whitbread giving weight away , there were three Gold Cup winners in there with Woodland Venture and What A Myth plus other good horses like Rondetto and Kapeno , Mill House was the only horse who could seriously give the greatest steeplechaser of all time Arkle a race at level weights , but he was a great horse in his own right , great memories in a great era of chasers .

    On his day, and this was one of them, Mill House really was a top notch chaser. I was just 18 years old when he won the Whitbread Gold Cup in 1967, but it was a joy to watch his flawless round of jumping on this memorable occasion.

    As they go off on the second circuit the commentator says "the crowd are clapping the horses as they go past". The crowd were not applauding "the horses" they were applauding the much-loved Mill House. Take my word for it - I was there.I acknowledge that Arkle was the better horse but Mill House was the better jumper and also better looking. I once had the privilege of standing a yard away from him and what a magnificent creature he was. As David Nicholson once said of him "that horse had a certain majesty about him". He certainly did.

      I agree that Mill House put in some prodigious leaps in many of his races, but I take issue that he was a better jumper than Arkle. Mill House fell on a number of occasions whereas Arkle never fell once.

      @@quidnunc2436 Hello, Quite agree with you sir but nice to see Mill House winning this. Arkle was Momentous and so prematurely taken from us. Equally Pat Taffe was a very acumlished horse man and modest too. I started watching racing in 1968 so sadly missed this early 60s era but late 60s n early 70s were Momentous years too. Recon Killiney could of been the New Arkle but we sadly will never know . Also I liked David Nicholson because he spoke his mind and was a very good judge of placing horses in the most suitable races. Kind regards Glynn n greetings from Stourbridge West Midlands UK 🤝

      @@beverleymorris167 And Mill House once gave Arkle weight and a beating. I will leave you to work out which race it was. Mill House suffered from a constant bad back and dodgy legs and never realised his full potential so we will never know what might have been. I acknowledged in my first post that Arkle was eventually the better horse so cannot understand the reason for your vitriol.

      @@johnlivesey7892 Hi John. Since you were attached to Derek Ancil's stable, you must have heard about probably one of the best chasers he trained, a horse called Knucklecracker. It might have been a bit before you worked for him, but Knucklecracker was a very good horse. He won 14 races including the 1960 Hennessy Gold Cup. He also finished third in the 1960 King George VI Chase won by Saffron Tartan and finished third in the 1962 Hennessy Gold Cup behind Springbok. In 1962 he won 4 races on the bounce but sadly, he broke a leg and had to be put down when he slipped up in the Rhymney Breweries Chase at Chepstow, in December 1962. I am 75 and I've followed racing, Flat and Jumping since 1961. I have a few Chaseform National Hunt Season Annuals from the 1960s, and the same for the Flat Annuals. I'm pretty sure I've also got the full 1962 Hennessy Gold Cup on DVD somewhere. Great memories!

      Hi, yes Derek was a Gentleman, I was a15 year old kid, and knew nothing about horses, but he hired me and gave me a chance. Had so good time's there, got to Rideout with Stan Mellow, Andy Turnell, Bobby Beasley. Stayed with Derek for about 3 years. Then worked for Neville Crump, Jack Berry, and James Eustace in Newmarket, also worked in Australia for a year. Came to America was assistant to Michael Dickinson, now retired and live in North Carolina. Yes those were great times working with those good old jumpers. I do remember Chaseform, it was like the Timeform black book.

    I'm sure we can all agree that the Whitbread Gold Cup (or whatever it is called now) is a mere shadow of what it used to be and a Cheltenham Gold Cup winner in his pomp would go nowhere near it. Whereas in the 1967 race there were two Gold Cup winners (Mill House & Woodland Venture) and a Gold Cup winner in waiting (What A Myth).

    I always wondered if there was something wrong with Mill House after the first time Arkle beat him in the Gold Cup. He wasn't beaten that far that day. But afterwards he got progressively worse often being beaten by inferior horses when taking on Arkle. But in this race it was the old Mill House again, jumping brilliantly and beating a high class field for a truly memorable win.

      that was back in those days where things like back troubles heart problems never came into the picture. Today you only have to look at Sprinter Sacre, who I think is a fantastic horse. Mind you I think a horse that has been his rightful rating was desert orchid. He to my mind was a better horse than arkle, but the experts wouldn't agree.

      StationOfdreams Arkle broke their spirit. 3 strides over line Mill was walking. As it slowly dawned all screaming and cheers were for him, by the time he reached winners enclosure, he was prancing like a show horse - and there wasn't a dry eye anywhere that day!!

      Barbara Dyson Come on! I loved Dessie but Arkle was unique! No other horse has ever required 2 sets of weights, 1 if he ran, 1 if he didn't!! Only his stablemate Flying bolt was within 2stone of him. Flying bolt won 2 mile Champion Chase and next day was 3rd in Champion Hurdle!!!

    • @bogratful
      @bogratful 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      thats right dessie was good but arkle and flying bolt a different league, you said flying bolt was within 2 stone of arkle well 2 stone is a lot in horse racing, the fact is they were very close some experts say flying bolt was as good and might have beat arkle depending on distance in 1965 66 season they had arkle superior by 1 pound and timeform had it at 2 pounds they never raced so we will never know which is no bad thing.
