Since I am quite young, I haven’t been dressing in a more traditional manner. These videos and the historical insights through them are changing my perception on clothing and wear. Just bought my first pair of monk straps yesterday, and it was due to your influence. Thank you.
Wow, I have seen quite a few channels here on TH-cam discussing almost the same content like yours, but non of them has been as captivating to me like this. Awesome awesome.
Everything here is telling an authentic story of creation and pure desire for perfection with an amazing taste of originality and sense of reality ...Thank you both for these wonderful and delightful talks.
I saw the first video and immediately subscribed. You can tell they are very knowledgeable and most importantly passionate about what they do. Good job Mr. Hugo and Ms. Sonya.
Dear Hugo,I had been suffering from acute foot ache for a very long time.I visited the best Doctors and took the best medical treatment possible but the pain remained and was getting worse as time progressed. But all that is History thanks you and the knowledge I have gained about shoes from your blog.I changed my supermarket bought loafers to a pair of handmade Derby’s and my foot pain from the past 10 years has vanished.Thank you so much for this information. Wish u all the best
Thank you so much to both of you for these great videos. So informative and generous of you to share years of accumulated knowledge. Truly appreciated.
Thank you for your informative video. Sonya looks very classy and as always, Hugo is a cusp above the top. Please continue to educate us, we enjoy your videos.
Just keep your content coming. Informative, interesting and helps us appreciate the history, evolution, craftsmanship, patience and skills required to create a thing of true beauty.
I have and deeply love my Leeds Blucher Oxfords...just a perfect all around design to me. Thank you Sonya for clarifying the difference between a Blucher and a Derby...very similar to the uninitiated.
@7:13 - I have double monk straps shoes in gray, black, ox blood, dark brown, tobacco, cognac, light camel brown. Also, I just acquired a pair chocolate suede and "medium/dark" patina double monks from Magnanni: people gasp at how beautiful they are. Shoe collecting is just too much fun.
Very important point about the DMS' comfortability to any type of foot. The height of your instep doesn't matter as much as you can simply adjust the straps over your instep accordingly and get the perfect fit in that regard...then only having the length correct is important which is easy with a proper sizing of your foot to the manufacturers size scale.
You two are a great team. Awesome presentation, very informative and inspirational. I recently discovered your channel and have embraced your knowledge and insights into my own desire to become more of a “Gentleman”, in its most traditional and thought out definition. I guess one of the blessings of age and experience is, making the decision to embrace the many components that come with ones desire to be a more complete human being. Ultimately, it seems to be the “Journey” that holds the subtle lessons that lead us to our truth. Stay Blessed and Thank You!!!
It's extremely rehreshing watching a video which includes beautiful shoes, useful info and well-dressed people talking elegantly in proper english. These are 9 well spent minutes, even though most of the features and history of the shous i already knew. Congrats!
Thank you. These videos helps me with buying decisions. I still wonder which foot wear the middle class (teachers, solicitors, Dr's) wore during the 19 and 20th century since their coin was of modest means.
Would love if you could also cover correct fit of a shoe. I have worn many wrongly lasted shoes and even wrong sizes before acquiring the experience to know the fit of my foot and even still it is complicated by odd sizing of my feet. If others could be helped by a video rather than purchasing multiple pairs then they could spend their money on variety instead. Thanks for a great series. The Italian gentleman is on my Christmas wishlist.
That's a complex subject. But we keep your idea and we'll see if we can address it in a future episode (probably with the help of a bespoke bootmaker). Yours, Hugo & Sonya
fantastic...and also thank you for the great explanation,,,very informative...I have just purchased a pair of cobbler union shoes and I am very happy with them and also that you have taken the time to use this brand to illustrate the differences,,,they are well done shoes at an affordable price point!.
Spectacular content, yes captivating, impressive background information, inspirational. Thank you. Do you have give some advice about the shoe colour, and your advice?
Dear Hugo. My tailor says I shouldn't wear an Oxford or brogue for formal business suit. He says the instep is too high for the trouser break. What do you think?
Good morning ! That's a strange advice because the Oxford (and some elegant Derbys like the two-eyelet) a perfect for a business suit, with rather low insteps. I personally wear them with very formal suits. I even wear a two-eyelet patent leather derby with my bespoke Tuxedo. Hope it helps. Hugo
For the first question, there is no difference in formality. For the second question, it depends: In the office, with business casual outfit, they works very well; but if you have strictly formal business events, black tie events and marriages, always wear black oxford shoes.
Toni, it's explained in the videos series . An Oxford is, by definition, more formal than a Derby. But some models, like for example the two-eyelet derby can be formal (I personally have a two eyelet Arca Derby from Corthay Paris in patent leather that I wear during black-tie events). Best, as ever, Hugo
Sonya, is your tie an Argyle and Sutherland Highlander's regimental? Mine was stolen awhile ago, and I have been searching for another one. Thanks for your time! Stay safe and healthy!🤗✨
I think it's better to go to a good cobbler for that, who will have some iron "forms" that can extend horizontally. Normally two days on such forms, and the toe area should be extended. Cheers, Hugo
Rrally intresting im 18 and a year back i really wanted to improve my style or more like research my woredrobe and this realy helps knowing the types of shoes when to use them and where thanks again👌👌👌👌
I love watching these videos and Whisky Vault videos....both make you feel happy about the fine things in life. By the way, "Derby" is actually pronounced as "Dar". Just like Gloucester is pronounced "Gloster" These are English names, not American, and thus should be pronounced the English way.
Dead Hugo, what is the level of formality of double monk strap shoes? I think double strap is more formal than single strap. Sonya explained that the trend is growing stronger but I'm not sure in what way exactly. I see double monk straps with suits but I don't know if it can be as formal as the oxford and the derby. Any advice?
Hi Stelio, I can only say the Italians love the single monk strap style and wear them at "most every level" of formality (minus semi-formal and formal, of course). This same comment could apply to the English in regard to the double strap, as the John Lobb "William" model can be classified as iconic. Personally, I find the John Lobb version to be almost as formal as the Oxford (and more formal than the Derby), but this is my opinion. Cheers! Hugo
Just bought my new Moreschi wing tipped, two toned, brown suede/leather derby’s. Unbelievable.. Now, I need to know how to wear them. That you satirical talks for the rescue.

Hugo, I could listen to you for days and weeks. And your suit is astonishing. I have a problem with getting the right shoes for my Diabetic feet. I have to use orthopedic insoles because my arches are reversed (the opposite of an arch). Do you know if there's any shoemaker that can make special shoes for my feet? I currently use Hush Puppies and they're alright. But nothing stylish and as beautiful as a pair of Derby's or Monk Straps. And I absolutely refuse to wear special Diabetic shoes that makes people look like Frankenstein.
Hello Luiz, my first advice would be to read the Academy section on our Parisian Gentleman website. Starting maybe with this one (among hundreds) : parisiangentleman.co.uk/academy/pg-essentials-the-staples-needed-to-build-your-entire-wardrobe/
Man, I just love the two of you. Style advice without snobbery from two genuine masters. Bien joué!

This one, great episode. I learned a lot about the Derby. I thought I have an Oxford but it's actually a Derby shoes.

Thank you. These videos helps me with buying decisions. I still wonder which foot wear the middle class (teachers, solicitors, Dr's) wore during the 19 and 20th century since their coin was of modest means.

Noted, haha. Thanks G ! ~Sonya

Hugo what do you think of exotic loafers oxfords and derbys ?
I really like the "Monk strap" shoe and the two-islet Derby shoe !
Dear Hugo, I love jeans, please make a video on it. I like the normal ones, not the torn and distressed ones. Thanks in advance
Still watching it now! Incredibly helpful knowledge. Would you have give-away series? I would love to join haha

Thanks for the review guys. Can shoe trees be used to widen the toe areas of shoes and boots?
I think it's better to go to a good cobbler for that, who will have some iron "forms" that can extend horizontally. Normally two days on such forms, and the toe area should be extended. Cheers, Hugo
That two-eyelet derby looks magnificent! Care to share the maker?
Much appreciated!
This model is from Cobbler Union in Atlanta. Write to daniel@cobbler-union.com on my behalf and ask him if this model is available. Cheers, Hugo

Are army-navy oxford low quarters actually bluchers?
Wonderful specimens, it should be noted.
My dad has quite a few nice Derbys. i didn't know what they were called until now.
Hi Hugo,
Great video.. on a side note, i really like your tie. where did you get it?
thankss
This one is a custom made tie made for me by Anna Matuazzo, the Neapolitan bespoke shirt maker. Hugo
I find the Derby to be the perfect model of shoe to pair when wearing patterned suits and pants. I live and die by my black on grey pair of Derbys
I enjoy your channel very much!!!
Where can we buy the shoes shown in the video ? I like the monk

Were the double monks you showed in the video by John Lobb?
No, everything showed on this video is from Cobbler Union in Atlanta. Cheers, Hugo
Wow much knowledge packed in a short time. Glad I found your channel 💯

Try Perry Ercolino in Doylestown, PA (Best Bespoke Shoemaker in the USA)!
You can also do the bespoke shoes of GJ Cleverly . They are visting USA in April . Great shoes , but, expect to invest some money.
So is a cap toe derby as formal as a cap toe monk strap?
Great video 👏
Thanks ! Hugo
I know this video is old, but that outfit he has on is beautiful 👏😍
Much appreciated ! Hugo
i see ! thank you again !!
My pleasure. Hugo
Hello Mr Hugo, wich tips could you give to a young doctor who's looking to improve his style without being loud or wearing too much?
