    Absolutely priceless! I grew up with these cars (Never owned a hemi, I drove a 70 Torino Cobra SCJ 4 speed) and hemi's were VERY highly respected along with 427 Chevy's etc. Well tuned cars that were well driven on slicks were terrors in our local street race scene. it's a lot of fun watching one being put through it's paces in stock form.

    I had a '69 in the '70s and knew about the 500, from the flat grille and headlights to the rearglass 'tunnel' being erased.
    Nice bit of history here.

      I had a red one with the Hemi from 79-81. I had no idea what a 500 was. I thought it didn't have hideaways because it was some cheap stripped model or something. I bought it because it had a big engine and huge rear tires. It really was pretty beat though. I think I found out that the 500 was special in the 90's. I knew someone with a 71 charger 500 and it actually was a stripped 318 nothing car

    This is an awesome old clip to find.. The 500 grille & rear window absolutely killed the looks of the Charger, but it's still a HEMI Charger being thumped on in 1969!

      They stole the grill out of the coronet 68 I believe. Cause it was more flush mounted. The recessed charger grill was causing lift in the front, and the back tunnel window caused lift also.
      I'm like you tho. Standard charger grill and back window 68-70 chargers is in my opinion the best looking car ever made, from every angle. First car I every remember riding in was my dad's 70 charger 500. The 70 500 nit same as 69. Doesn't have the flush back window. I prefer the 68 over all of them tho. I love the round taillights and how the did the backup lights, and the clean 68 grill amd round marker lights.

    I love that car, but the Hemi's were not daily driver material. Out on the highway they were fine, but in city traffic on a warm to hot day, they would overheat and load up the plugs. The 440 was better suited for a daily.

      @@springwoodslasher79 He is right and you better know enough to keep one in tune . Most people don't . I worked on them and they need special attention just like a L88 or 427 Ford they all eat spark plugs , need the valves adjusted somebody that can set dual points and make sure the carb or carbs are working right . Unless you don't want it to run at it's best . Even a 440 six pack needs a good tuner .

      Pretty much any big block muscle car with a solid lifter cam needs periodic valve adjustments and things like that to keep them running right. The 440 was a much better engine for everyday street use...and the 440 +6 was practically just as fast as a Hemi but way cheaper and way more manageable to drive every day

    • @Red-rl1xx
      @Red-rl1xx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jeremythompson9895 That's true. I saw an article in a magazine once that talked about the best balanced musclecars (engines, brakes, tires, transmissions, etc.) and it said the same thing. The highest horsepower engines were seldom recommended. As the article put it, "they drank gas, ate spark plugs like candy, and required more tuning than a Kmart radio."

      That they are.
      The Hellcat is much faster. After 50 years it better be but it is.it breaks and turns better ofcourse as well.
      Some people like me, im 53, i drive daily ( except winter) a 69 440 6 bbl Road Runner and a 1970 RT/SE 440 CHARGER. BOTH IN ABSOLUTE MINT CONDITION. BOTH HAD THEIR ORIGINAL NUMBERS MATCHING EMGINES TAKEN OUT AND STORED WHEN I WAS 19.
      THE CHARGER RT/SE ENGINE HAS 9,126 MILES.
      THE ROAD RUNNER 6 BBL HAS 5, 877 MILES ON IT.
      I COULD SELL ONE OF THESE ALL NUMBERS MATCHING AND BUY ME A BRAND NEW HELLCAT OR RED EYE AND I THOUGHT LONG AND HARD ABOUT IT TOO. TOOK THE HELLCAT FOR A RIDE 3 STRAIGHT YEARS. 2 CHARGERS AND 1 CHALLENGER. TOOK THE RED EYE OUT 2 TIMES.
      I BOUGHT THE RED EYE BUT......... I DID NOT SELL EITHER CAR. THEY WILL BOTH BE DRIVEN EVERY WEEKDAY AND BE THE ONES MOSTLY RACED.
      THE 440 6 BBL IS A 6BBL BLOCK BUT ITS A VERY BUILT 440. 456 GEARS, A 727 BUILT AS STRONG AS CAN BE WITH A SHIFT KIT MY GRANDFATHER AND ME INVENTED/DESIGNED IN IT. THE THING REMINDS ME SOMEWHAT OF THE SHIFTING IN THE CAT.
      LESS GEARS OFCOURSE BUT THE THING SHIFTS RIGHT ON MARK AND PUSHES YOU BACK AND CHIRPS EVERYTIME.
      IT HAS 118 000 MILES ON IT WITH A FEW TRANS TUNES. IT GETS BEAT UP BUT.... CANT TELL.
      LOVE THOSE TORQUFLITES.
      HAS A HUGE( CANT GIVE ALL AWAY DOUBLEPUMPER) AND ALOT OF GO FAST GOODIES FROM MOPAR.
      THE ENGINES IN BOTH WERE FINISHED BEING BUILT BY ME WHEN I WAS 19. I DID ANOTHER REBUILD 28 YRS LATER ON EACH.
      THEY WERE RUN HARD A 1/4 AT A TIME WITH ABOUT 20 1 MILE RUNS THERE TOO.
      THEY ALSO DID NOT GET TO SLOW DOWN ON THE STREET MUCH.
      UNTIL THE LAST FEW YEARS A LITTLE MAYBE.
      I WILL NEVER SELL THEM AND I WILL KEEP THE RED EYE AS WELL.
      I OWN A 6 BAY GARAGE AND 2 PIT BAYS FOR EASY OIL CHANGES AND FOR SOME CARS TO PULL TRANNYS OUT, REPLACE Difs, etc. Behind the garge i had a much smaller but big enough machine shop and a large bay to build customers race engines.
      Mostly HEMIs, 440 6 bbls or 440s and 340 6 bbls and 340 stoplight screamers. I got lucky and built a 426 max wedge, a 413, 4, 360's
      Atleast 3, 318s. Yea i know but i was getting 450 HP out of them before i believe car craft did.
      1 of the 318s was a stock build, the other 2???
      475HP AND 460HP.
      I have built a few fords. A 428, a 427, 2 351 C and 4 5.0s.
      3 GENERAL MISTAKES ERRRR MOTORS.
      2 454s ls6 engines and a vette 327.
      The mopars?? I believe 58 total.
      I KNOW I HAVE BUILT 6, 426 HEMIs 3 of the OLD 392 HEMIs and a heck of alot 440 and 340 6 bbls/packs whether you had a plymouth or dodge.
      The 340s if they are all in the log were from 365 hp to 550.
      The 440s were from 420- 590.
      Yes that 340 duster with a actually a 545 HP 340 was a NASTY CAR
      THERE WERE VERY FEW AND I ABSOLUTELY MEAN VERY FEW BBs that it lost too.
      It has beaten 440s. 454s, 427s 455s 389 tri power goats, 400 ram airs built 383s and those are what i remember and the 3 pictures with drag slips pn them hanging in the office.

      He did say 425+. My 68 Coronet dyno'ed at 505HP bone stock. With headers it went up to 530. All these cars really needed were good gears and headers. A good intake helped a lot too. The 427 Vettes were pretty hard to catch, but it often depended on the driver and the rear gears.

    • @peteshea8010
      @peteshea8010 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 425 HP rating was a GROSS rating.
      Actual power at the rear wheels was in the 315 HP range:
      www.hotrod.com/articles/mopp-9912-hemi-vs-viper-roadtest/
      I'll also note that unlike 0 - 60 times and ET, trap speed varies little with off the line traction variables. The absolute best case trap speed for this Charger in 100% production line stock state (but fitted with the tires of your choice) is 106 MPH. 101 - 103 MPH would be more "real world."
      Just not fast by today's standards.

    The trick with those old bias ply Fiberglass belted tires was to run the air pressure way up. 32 psi was their max rated pressure, but to really make them work required upping the pressure to 40+ psi. (some racers used to run them as high as 60 psi!!!) They were an incredible piece of engineering actually. A "Tune-Able" tire. Muscle Car Review magazine did a tire comparison with several DOT drag tires and a pair of drag slicks. One of the "Old Timers" suggested taking a pair of Fiberglass belted tires along just to show what these cars were using when they were new. After all the testing was done they threw the bias ply PG tires on, and at door sticker pressures they did exactly what everyone figured they'd do. Then the "Old Guy" told them to try them with the pressure jacked up the way they did it back in the day. They were using a GTO Judge with a 400 and a 4 speed. When the driver launched the car it bogged bad. So they tried it again, at a higher launch rpm. It still bogged. When they finally found the limit it was launching at 4000 rpm. On par with the drag slicks they had just tested. Albeit there was a problem in that the bias ply tires had no "Give" in the sidewall making any hard launch extremely hard on u-joints and clutches, so 4 speed cars had to exercise care on the launch, but automatic cars could take full advantage of the PG tires tune-ability and were able to greatly improve standing start acceleration as well as cornering ability back in the day, IF you knew how to "Tune" your tires. F.A.S.T. competitors are well aware of the air pressure aspect of bias ply Polyglass belted tires capabilities. That's one reason they are running into the single digits on those "crappy" old bias plies...

And at the end they also tested a set of Poly Glass repops. The 400 was able to get wheel spin out of all of them. Then an "Old Guy" explained about tuning the Poly Glass tires by over inflating them. They tried it. The 400 bogged bad out of the hole so they raised the launch rpm to 4000! It hooked! SUPER TIRES!

    I remember the 60's well. It is amazing how bad the tires were. The technology of the day was bias belted tires. The sidewalls were stiff and they had hardly any rubber on the road. In fact, the NHRA limited tires, even slicks for the stock classes to 7 inches wide. I watched a test on the 68 Hurst Olds. It was a second faster 0-60 and about a second faster through the quarter. All this because neither could get traction. I loved the 7 mpg. They got about 12 on the highway if you kept your foot out of it. Back then we didn't care. Ethyl (premium) was less than 40 cents a gallon.

      +C moore When I got my license in 1971-1972 gas was 35-37 cents a gallon for regular seemed every kid/guy working at a gas station had a hot car. I moved from NY to MA in 74 and built a 67 Camaro RS Yenko clone, 427/425 with 456 gears and a 4 speed, about a year r so after that the 1st 'gas stortage' hit and people were convinced that in 20 years we wouldn't have anymore gas. I used to street race my Camaro when I borrowed my buddies slicks all cars were in the mirror. Drove it up to New England dragway in Epping NH on Wed/grudge night and with some slicks got right into the 12's at 108 -110. You know its funny that the times of old cars like a Hemi Charger or anything were a good run if you got a low 14 or even into the 13's. New Camaro with 455 hp runs 12.5 at 115 with the manual, the guy I borrowed the slicks from used to race and he told me if I had a 800-850 holley DP instead of that junk 780 and a better intake I should be running 12.4 or better. Amazing how far we have come with technology, now you run mid 12's and still do 155 mph and cruise all day on the highway but yeah still respect the sound of the solid lifter cam and headers

    Actually, they did. Shoulder harnesses first appeared in 1968, but you had to attach them to the seat belts each time that you used them. Few people used them until they made it mandatory that that they were secured to the seat belts in 1974. You can see it clearly hanging down behind the driver at 5:40 in this video. When not in use they were stored with a clip on the roof parallel to the top of the window. This is why you don't see the one on the passenger side hanging down.

      I had a friend inmy senior year of high school that got a 67 Plymouth GTX with a hemi and an automatic. When it got in, he was really disappointed. The timing was so retarded that when you nailed it, there was a hesitation. He took it to a guy that ran a top fuel car and he put it on a dyno. It was only putting out a little over 200 hporsepower at the rear wheels. After changing the distributor to a mallory,and setting the timing and dwell the way it should be, it was a different car. It had so much torque that you could nail it at 30 mph and it would try and get sideways. Granted, it had little G70x14's but the point is that it was a completely different car.

    • @cmoore185
      @cmoore185 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The muscle cars of the 60's all ran on bias ply tires. Most were actually 2 ply from the factory. It was possible if you tried really hard to burn up a set of rear tires in a thousand miles. One of the things that gave the cars even more appearance of speed was the lack of traction.

      +Charles Marshall With that kind of wheelspin it's no wonder 0-60 was so slow. With proper traction that car could do 60 around 5 seconds flat and run the quarter around 13.5 secs, cosiderably faster than the 3.6L and about the same as the 5.7L models. The 69 sounds way better, though!

    • @charlesmarshall2697

      +Paul Hudson Don't get me wrong. I grew up with Hemi B and E bodies and they were indeed brutes. The A-12 six pack cars and any under 3,000 pound 340 A-Bodys with 3.91 or 4.10 chunks were also 13 second cars. They ran the times on junk tires which made them that much more impressive. The point I was making is that the new V-6 Chargers are marvels of great engineering. 30 MPG with great comfort, safety and power for low prices. I would love to see a baby Ram truck that would weigh no more than 3,300 pounds with a normally aspirated 3.6 making about 325 HP coupled to an 8 speed auto with big brakes and coil springs on all 4 corners. A modern Duster in pickup dress.

    • @paulhudson231
      @paulhudson231 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Charles Marshall OK; I understand. I also think it's interesting that the 5.7L Charger is about as fast as the '69 but it can get 25-27 mpg while still weighing over 2 tons. And you are right - compared to today the tires then were horrendous. It took guts to drive those cars like that with no traction control.
      My biggest desire these days is a V8, RWD 4-door with a manual trans that is not loaded like the Chevrolet SS. I can afford a $45K car but I won't pay for one. I will probably get an 07 CTS-V in the next year or so - I like that no auto was offered for that version.

I also found the mpg rating funny but you have to remeber gas was only 30-50 cents a gallon in 69. Don't think it's a pink car. the video has just degraged over the yrs. Tumbs up for this piece of history!!

    23 pages of people talking about how bad "Bias Ply Tires" were. The tires on this car are F70x15 Poly Glass Red Lines. Not your average "Bias Ply" tire by a long shot. I used alot of these back in the day and what nobody has talked about is how exceptional they were. This show typically inflated test cars tires to manufacturers specs (24-28psi) which was great for ride comfort and tire wear pattern. But for performance driving like they are doing here you need to inflate them to 40-60psi.

We have mopars and a Sonoma sbc build and it's sickening to see the price difference in parts for each . They say they sell more chevy parts , so they are cheaper ! • @johntechwriter
      @johntechwriter 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True. They used Sears Point racetrack for tuning sessions and the Charger was all over the Mustang. To compensate they beefed up the Mustang's suspension and fitted the skinniest tires they could find to the stock 440 Charger. The engine/exhaust sound for McQueen's Mustang was actually from a Ford GT40.

    • @johntechwriter
      @johntechwriter 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's because they discovered what a dog the Mustang was during shakedown tests at Sears Point race track and extensively modified the suspension and powertrain. They left the Dodge stock and fitted the skinniest tires they could find.

    The Charger in this video was in raw "off the Dealers lot" form. Strange as it may seem these cars were not "Tuned" for performance from the dealer. It is one of 392 "500's" built to qualify for competition in NASCAR and USAC racing. Most of these cars had the 440 Magnum this one is one of the few with the Hemi. It was considered a "Super Car" which is beyond muscle car performance levels. But it was probably the heaviest at over 4000lbs curb weight. Fat yes. But still faster than you!

    You're talking about "Palerider66". He actually hit 140+ several times and the engine wasn't "Topped out" at that point. The rear axle ratio was 3.23 which is a compromise gear not a top end gear. Car and Driver tested a '69 Hemi Charger back when these cars were new. The car clocked over 166mph several times with a 3.54 gear and a 4 speed. With more road they could have gone faster. That was without the "Coronet grille and the "Aero" rear window and on the so-called crappy bias ply tires.
