Antica Monterano - Diosilla waterfall, ruins and loop trail

Walkers! Fancy a day trip near Rome? Today we are proposing an excursion to Ancient Monterano. We will leave from Canale Monterano to reach the ghost town of ancient Monterano in a trek of tourist difficulty.

You can leave your car a few metres from the beginning of the path, the reference point for finding it is the Diosilla waterfall. As soon as you arrive, take a short flight of steps that will lead you to the waterfall.
The waterfall is not dizzying, but the fable of the young Diosilla who weeps for the death of her comrade who died in the war remains fascinating.
The path skirts the stream along an extremely enjoyable picnic area. We are in the Monterano Regional Nature Reserve and the trail is suitable for families and children.
In a few minutes, we find ourselves in front of the sulphatara, an ancient quarry from which sulphur was extracted for agricultural and commercial use.
Next you will see signs indicating the way up the tuffaceous hill on which the ghost town stands. This will be the only noteworthy difference in height you will encounter, but it is a short walk that does not require any special equipment. The ancient Etruscan town of Monterano will welcome you first with a series of Etruscan tombs dug into the hillside and then, after a short flight of steps, with the imposing remains of the ghost town.
Numerous films have been shot among the ruins of Monterano, to name but a few, "L'armata Brancaleone" or "Ben-Hur".
We descend along a narrow but comfortable path that will take us back to the valley, precisely along the banks of the river Mignone. It will be necessary to ford the river a couple of times, don't rely too much on the wet rocks, it is preferable to take off your shoes and cross it at the shallowest points.
The route closes in a ring following the road that will take you back to the car park.

@@ilcamminodelcretino beh, di posticini gagliardi ce ne sarebbero parecchi: sorgente del Cremera nella valle del Sorbo, il Fosso del Peccato sotto Calcata, le forre intorno al borgo di San Vittorino con tunnel e acquedotti romani immersi nelle vegetazione tra cascatelle e pozze (Ponte Terra, Ponte Lupo e cascata di Ponte Lupo, Fosso dell'Acqua Rossa ecc), i sentieri impervi sopra il lago di Castel Gandolfo (grotta neolitica, romitorio di Sant'Angelo in Lacu, Pentime Rosse).... c'è tutto un mondo da scoprire a due passi da Roma (sono sempre Eduardo Maresca, quello che ti segue da tempo, ho solo cambiato nome su TH-cam...)

Ciao Nic, bella esperienza, visitato circa 3 anni fa, nalla chiesa/convento c'era un albero di fico secolare favoloso.
Abbiamo dormito la sera prima nella faggeta vicino Oriolo, molto frequentata dai lupi, infatti la stessa notte avevano sbranato del bestiame, detto da un allevatore del posto.
Comunque a 4 km circa abbiamo trovato un laghetto sulfureo pulito, infatti ci siamo fatti il bagno, bellissima esperienza conclusa con una carbonara, coda alla vaccinara e mega birra a fine percorso ovvero in paese(il primo trovato).
