The Cerveteri waterfalls: the Via degli Inferi along the Necropolis of Banditaccia

Do you fancy a day trip near Rome? Today we propose the Cerveteri waterfalls on the Via degli Inferi, along the Necropolis of Banditaccia! A trekking of Tourist difficulty.

The route starts right from the parking lot of the archaeological site. In this huge complex, fundamental for the grandeur and architectural complexity of the Etruscan tombs dating back to around the seventh century BC.
The area that can be visited contains hundreds of three types of tombs.
The largest are the monumental tumuli formed by an external circular wall - or drum - made of tuff blocks, with a diameter that can reach 33 meters, surmounted by a dome.
Inside these tombs are reminiscent of a typical Etruscan house, with corridors and rooms that house the stone beds on which the sarcophagi were once placed.
The second type includes simpler tombs with a rectangular plan, called "dice", lined up along "streets" as in a real "city of the dead".
Finally, the later model contemplates underground burial chambers, dug directly into the tuff; the most famous example of this type is the so-called Tomb of the Reliefs, one of the rare tombs in Cerveteri richly decorated with wall paintings and stucco reliefs.
We start by following a magical stone corridor that winds between cube tombs carved into the rock. Stop to explore the tombs or enjoy the magical silence. Immediately after we will cross a short stretch surrounded by cultivated fields and we will reach an easy ford to cross the Fosso della Mola.
The water at the ford point is not very high, you can leave your shoes if they are waterproof, otherwise face it without shoes and put them back on the other side. There are no other similar points on the route.
A short journey will lead us to the first, spectacular waterfall of the day: the Del Moro Waterfall. The path that leads us to it is blind, we will then have to retrace our steps to resume the way.
Immediately after, the Arenile Waterfall awaits us, a place where water and vegetation merge creating a spectacular mix of colors.
Third but no less exciting is the Braccio di Mare waterfall, a not very high jump but which gives life to a pool of an incredibly blue color, almost reminiscent of the high mountain lakes of Trentino.
The next stretch of the route has a bit of an uphill gradient which will serve us to bypass the Ospedaletto waterfall and continue towards the highest of the 5 waterfalls: the Castel Giuliano waterfall. You will see this waterfall from above, if instead you want to enjoy it from below you will have to descend along the path that leads to the river bed and then retrace your steps.
The return winds along a path, known as the way to the underworld, which crosses dense vegetation and gives us the opportunity to get lost in our thoughts immersed in nature.

A prescindere che stai visitando un luogo che noi di Cerveteri conosciamo, amiamo e rispettiamo da sempre, ma l'edificio di cemento che hai incontrato nella vallata, faceva parte di una vecchia cava di basolati che è servita a costruire le strade di Roma. Poi la strada di cemento che hai percorso di fatto protegge nel suo interno la condotta idrica che serve la città di Cerveteri e di Ladispoli e che si approvvigiona con le acque delle cascatelle.

...e anche oggi il nostro protagonista si trova come catapultato in un film avventuroso, in questo caso, "Tomb"Raider, mentre s'imbatte in pericolose "fiere in calore" e donzelle da aiutare a guadare fiumi in piena. Ma anche questa volta il nostro Nico Croft torna vincitore sulla via di casa in attesa della sua prossima avventura! 😁
