I went to see Neil 68-69 in a small club. Surprise, after an acoustic set he introduced his new band- Crazy Horse-and that sound- it knocked me out then. After that set, I wnt backstage and asked him how he got those tones...and he said- "an old Fender amplifier-don't get a black one". I had a gold top Paul with stock P 90's( We didn't know that "Old Black" was indeed also a gold top before it was black at that time), and I found the works of a Fender Showman that had been in a white cabinet and removed as the speakers were shot. No pedal effects needed- that amp was clean , yet broke up the sound at just the right times. Pots on the Paul open fully. You could get this stuff used back then - guitars and amps such as this- for under $200...and I did. Wish I still had that Fender...but I did keep on to the guitar. I have no idea what Neil uses for amps now, but I see that he comes back to that Les Paul again and again. Of course- whay not- they are great.
Sounds pretty darn close ! I get my Neil Young on with an orange Rocker 15 head into Alnico 212 With a les luis tweed pedal in it ! It sounds so close with my Gibson les paul 60s tribute with p90s ! For some reason the Orange amp has the fuzzy tweed tone going on.
how refreshing to find someone that isn't talking bollocks, on TH-cam - just a great demo that shows that anyone can afford the basics to achieve the NY tones
Good stuff...I like that you're showing how to get great sounds without needing super expensive equipment. It's all about the playing and using your head to find the right gear
I think you're right with the 6L6's. I plugged a telecaster straight into my Hughes & Kettner Statesman 212 combo tonight and got real close. It was such fun. Rock on and thanks for the tips and info. Cool.
Wow! .... and, Thanks! Your tone is awesome and your playing has a lot of that feel needed to channel Young. I was lucky enough to catch Neil Young play Cortez at an outdoor ampitheater at the columbia river gorge in George, Washington. It was pitch black, raimg like crazy, we sst there in our garbage sack ponchos and listened to those crazy, echoing notes...such s great moment. Hope you are still playing - spreading that particular gospel :-) Thanks for vid and tips!!!
Great demo of your way to get that Neil Young tone and vibe and loved that you played an Epiphone. The Fender amp and delay pedal sounded great together...very impressed thanks from the UK
Thanks so much for doing this video. I have a Deville 410 and have just come to the conclusion that I don't like the headroom and fizzy breakup but your speaker/tube switch has given me a glimpse of hope that I won't have to sell my beloved behemoth!
When Neil played Cowgirl In the Sand as an encore with Booker -T and the MGs he shredded the strings of his guitar. I was 3rd row center and it was a awesome display of rock and roll..
Neil bends his Bigsby handle where it is parallel with the guitar so he can keep it in his hand and use it almost constantly. This from an interview he did on his equipment. The roller bridge piece is right on. I have a Deville 410 that I've modded.
Locking tuners don't help with tuning stability. Use normal tuners, put strings on correctly and stretch them. Tuning stability is all in the nut and in eliminating friction at the saddles, if there is any.
Thanks man. Too many videos for explane the trivial sound of david gilmour and few videos for explane the disperate-bitter-sweet-catastrophic-deep-gorgeous sound of Neil Young. This world is ugly.
Holy crap!!! You nailed it with gear that everyone can afford!!! My man!!!! I've never owned a HRD... Marshall's and stuff are my thing. Me thinks I'm missing something... I did have a 69 Bassman head once. I hated it... It'was ghastly.
Thank you, I just made the best with what I have and used my ears to dial it in without spending a bizillion dollars. I think it helps that the hotrod has 6L6 tubes in it. That's what Neil did with the tweed, he put 6L6 tubes in it....
Great video, but one of the biggest misconceptions is that locking tuners keep your tuning better. All locking tuners do is make changing strings easier. They are still gear driven just like other tuners. I could continue on but look at the mechanical workings of a locking tuner and regular tuner. It’ll all come together.
@@telecastinater That's hillarious. I think it's important that you can play without. That's what makes a player good. :) Keep it up and love from The Netherlands!
@@nickklok4955 define good.. if you know what you are really doing with a pedal or 2 then all the power to that player.. and yes traditional guitar players don't use any and... well ..... that is awesome too :)
What's the maintenance like for the Bigsby on the Epiphone? My guitar repair guy always talked my Dad and I out of ever getting one put on a Les Paul because reasons. What do you think having gigged with it regularly and presumably maintained the instrument regularly?
Can Neil's sound be played close on a Fender Strat? I've got the HSS pickup array, and I am using Boss Katana Mk II 50 watt amp. It is digital, but I can supposedly get software to download for different sounds from Boss.
You do know that Neil's Black LP (a re-finned LP Goldtop) has Firebird pickups in it, and that he used a tweed Deluxe or almost everything, do you not?..Would that not be the best way to sound like Neil?
Agreed, but I made due with what I have. Marsh amps makes a Neil young tweed with reverb that sounds like the ticket, I like the versatility of having a clean channel for the other non Neil songs we do. If only somebody made a tweed with a clean channel.
It's good tone but it's not Neil's tone at all. You simply play like him with similar gear but Neil's specific tone is really impossible to get without the same gear. At least get the pickups right. @@telecastinater
@@AndreaAustoniyou’re listening to it on TH-cam. And even then it’s pretty damn close. To the majority of listeners it’s balls on and thats what matters.

They can;t get the tone without the gear, that's for sure. Especially Neil Young's tone, which requires a special amp that no one else has plus a bunch of other specialized gear. Another useless video.

Hope it works out for you brother, in my deville I put in mercury transformers.
Yup, defo would make a big difference...the stock ones don't really give much. Just out of interest, what speaker is your Deluxe packing?
The Deluxe has a Patriot cannabis rex, the deville has the factory speakers.
Of course, I meant that the pickup at the bridge is a Firebird. The neck pickup is a P-90., Old Black never had humbuckers, even when new.
