    This movie is one of the first and only to acknowledge the water needed to move entire Armies and just how many animals would be at a battlefield after the fact feasting on the dead.

      there are very few modern films (at least 20 yrs old) that features the crusades/armies in the desert though.

    • @firingallcylinders2949
      @firingallcylinders2949 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @@vincentnin1 That's true, but these are true regardless of location. During the American Civil War the carnage was so ridiculous and it took place in people's farms and backyards. There are accounts of farm animals especially hogs just eating the dead bodies. Free State of Jones depicts this but not many others. Animals have no issues eating dead humans and not many movies show it. I also believe that a horse on average on a warm day requires 2-3 gallons of water minimum. More if they're running alot. Now multiply that by entire Cavalry units.

    1177, the Battle of Montgisard: "Exactly one week after he had crossed over from Egypt, Saladin and his army were crossing a ravine near Montgisard, southeast of Jerusalem, when the Christians came crashing down on them from the north. Saladin had no idea what was coming his way. With the element of surprise on their side, the Christians, despite being incredibly outnumbered, were able to send Saladin's army from the field of battle. The victory was owed in part to the Templars and their heavy charge led by Odo de St Amand and eighty of his brethren. Ralph of Diss in chronicling an eyewitness account of the Battle of Montgisard wrote of the devastating effect of the Templars' charge:
    'Spurring all together, as one man, they [the Templars] made a charge, turning neither to the left nor to the right. Recognizing the battalion in which Saladin commanded many knights, they manfully approached it, immediately penetrated it, incessantly knocked down, scattered, struck and crushed. Saladin was smitten with admiration, seeing his men dispersed everywhere, everywhere turned in flight, everywhere given to the mouth of the sword.'
    Many of Saladin's men left the field, those who had the courage to hold their positions were all but destroyed by the Christians. Soon the Egyptian army was in flight, abandoning not only the booty they had captured as the pillaged their way towards Jerusalem, but also many of their own weapons. If the humiliation in the field was not enough, the journey home only added to it. As the army crossed the Sinai Desert, they were regularly harassed by Bedouins, while others who stopped in villages to beg for food and water were slain or handed over to the Christians as captives."
    "Among the notables who took part in the attack, there were, in addition to Baldwin IV, Raynald of Chatillon, Baldwin of Ibelin and his brother Balian, Raynald Sidon, and Joscelin of Edessa. Along with them there was also the famous relic of the Cross of Christ, normally kept in the Resurrection Basilic in Jerusalem."
    "While exact casualties for the Battle of Montgisard are not known, reports indicate that only ten percent of Saladin's army [10-20,000 men] returned safely to Egypt. Among the dead was the son of Saladin's nephew, Taqi ad-Din. Saladin only escaped the slaughter by riding a racing camel to safety. For the Crusaders, approximately 1,100 were killed and 750 wounded."

    There is no way those dead bodies would have anything on them that long after the battle. The soldiers on the winning side would have been busy stripping the soldiers of everything valuable. Weapons, armor, but even their clothes would have been taken. Movies always seem to get this wrong and love showing a battlefield that is full of dead armored men with weapons lying everywhere though. Even if they had to move and didn't have time to take much, looters would often follow armies in the hopes of getting rich.

    Many Muslims sought shelter in the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Dome of the Rock, and the Temple Mount area generally. According to the Gesta Francorum, speaking only of the Temple Mount area, "...[our men] were killing and slaying even to the Temple of Solomon, where the slaughter was so great that our men waded in blood up to their ankles..." According to Raymond of Aguilers, also writing solely of the Temple Mount area, " in the Temple and porch of Solomon men rode in blood up to their knees and bridle reins." Writing about the Temple Mount area alone, Fulcher of Chartres, who was not an eyewitness to the Jerusalem siege because he had stayed with Baldwin in Edessa at the time, says: "In this temple 10,000 were killed. Indeed, if you had been there you would have seen our feet coloured to our ankles with the blood of the slain. But what more shall I relate? None of them were left alive; neither women nor children were spared."[22]

    While this movie was visually great, the actor's performance was also great, it unfortunately, severely lacked in historical accuracy. A crusader would never doubt the will of god and have this bleak atheist post modern look on faith. And almost all protagonists display such view in this movie. And the ones that don't, are the antagonists, the evil templars willing to go to war. This simply did not happen in such manner.

    • @Boon2Dock
      @Boon2Dock ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I don't agree that Tiberias has a "atheistic" view. Nor is it post-modern in any way. He simply feels that the purpose he had when coming to the levant has become hollow, corrupted by greed and ambitious men. There are contemporary writers that noted this by the third crusade, with the notion being even more wide spread by the more infamous fourth crusade.

    • @Boon2Dock
      @Boon2Dock ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Overwatch9 The hospitalier puts no stock in religion because he thinks that the relationship with God is a personal one, not one driven by a corrupt church (see indulgences). Balina says what he says because he goes to the temple mount and thinks that just because he's there God should be as well. The hospitalier responds with saying that God will know you through your good deeds, not by simply wlking up a hill. The Bishop and the templars are the least faithful christians in the story.

    • @Overwatch9
      @Overwatch9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Boon2Dock There is also a scene in the extended cut, where a bush catches fire and Balian expresses further doubts to the Hospitaler.
      My point is, a crusader would have never doubted the existence of god, faith or even the righteousness of the church. He would not be against the killing of the infidels (muslims), and the Templars were never ever hanged for raiding the arabs. There is a series of videos, titled "historical accuracies of KOH" made by a channel called Real Crusades History, I believe. I strongly advise watching it.
