    CHRONOGRAPH AND ACCURACY DATA: docs.google.co...
    In this video we shoot and discuss the 224 Valkyrie, both the good and the bad. We've been exposed to the caliber since January 2018 when we started testing 1:7" barreled rifles with less than stellar, and certainly less than advertised results. We decided to wait it out a bit before putting out a video on the subject and in that time, faster twist barrels became available and so far seems that a 1:6.5" twist rate is the ticket for the Valkyrie with all bullets weights. There are many that say the 1:7' twist rate is best for the caliber but so far we and many others have to disagree. Using the Miller Stabilization Formula, all bullet weights have a higher stabilization factor in the faster twist rates.
    We did experience some issues with jackets separating from the cores of the 90gr Sierra Matchking factory loads outside of the barrel, an issue that has reared its head recently. We had three jackets separate in this range session likely due to increased muzzle velocity from the heat and the Power Pro 2000-MR powder used in our handloads. We have heard from multiple sources that Sierra is redesigning these particular projectiles and Federal has since notified the shooting public that they are working to correct the apparent issues with the 90gr factory loads.
    We do still have load development to do with the 88gr ELD-M projectiles from Hornady and the new 95gr Sierra Matchkings as well as testing a 1:6" twist rate barrel. We will update the results in the sheet above as new data is collected for those interested in following our progress. Stay tuned, much more on the way.

    • @shananagans5

      I like the 25-45 Sharps too. If that 25-45 truly does have 1,700+ ft-lbs with an 87 grain bullet at 3,000 fps, I think it has more potential than the .224 but any alternative cal will depend, like you say, on ammo manufacturers, barrel manufacturers and whoever holds the rights to any given cal. They have to allow everyone to manufacture it with low royalties.
      They have to work the kinks out and they have to get the costs down before any alternate AR cal will be widely adopted.
      We all buy ARs because we like to burn through ammo. A .224 or a 25-45 may be great for hunting or long range target shooting but at $1 a round, no alternative cal will beat out .223/5.56 until they can compete with $.30 a round.
      I would love an AR with more range & more energy as would many people but it's a catch 22. Prices won't come down until a round becomes wildly popular and a round can't become popular at $1 per round.
      Hopefully we will get lucky and the military will adopt the .224 or something like the 25-45. Until then, I think .223/5.56 will remain the standard AR cal. :( (sad 50yo woman without her dentures in face) lol

    @marine6680 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    1moa is good performance from a semiauto. It's nice when you can do better, but 1moa isn't poor.
    224 valk was not created for "increased accuracy", it was about maintaining velocity and energy at extended ranges. Basically better external ballistics. Accuracy is down to the rifle and shooter, and using quality ammo... Not necessarily the specific caliber used.
    While there are ways to maximize accuracy potential with good cartridge design, that doesn't mean you need the perfectly purpose designed caliber to get good accuracy. If you were inclined, most calibers can be made to shoot 1moa at 100yds, if you build a rifle to do so, and load ammo as high of quality and consistency as you can.
    It may be an inefficient round that doesn't shoot well past 100yds, but that's a function of external ballistics.
    You don't need 6.5 cred or 224 valk to get an accurate rifle... Especially if you are staying inside 600yds or so. But they will be more consistent at the longer ranges, past 800yds compared to other options like 308 and 223/5.56.

    • @masonhaggerty186
      @masonhaggerty186 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      marine6680 how often are people really shooting past 600 meters? I mean come on. This cartridge really poses almost 0 advantages compared to other cartridges on the market.

    • @marine6680
      @marine6680 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mason Haggerty That isn't the point though is it? I'm not sure you actually understand the point of my post.
      It has advantage over other calibers at extended ranges. That's what it is for. If all you shoot is max a couple hundred or so yards, then no... This caliber is of no benefit to you, and has downsides as well.
      That was the point of my entire post, which sailed past you...
      Anyone picking up this caliber because they think it's somehow more accurate, are fooling themselves and wasting their efforts.
      For closer ranges, out to a few hundred yards, 5.56/223 is perfectly fine. If you are good at reading wind, then you can get good results at 600yds. You could even push past that, but the skill level is very high with that caliber.
      224 valk is designed for increased ballistic efficiency by having heavier bullets with a high BC. This makes shooting at extended ranges easier to do, because of less wind drift, and a higher retained velocity allowing for less drop at range.
      Long range accuracy has many components to get it right... There are no miracle calibers out there...

      OK, but does it actually maintain supersonic to the ranges advertised? Not from what I've seen. I guess if you merely want to punch paper at extreme ranges 224V could be fun, but it serves not purpose beyond that. Can't hunt deer with it (not that I would at that range regardless). Very specialized. If that is your thing, go for it. But 6.6 Grendel is more versatile and useful in the real world.

    • @ostiariusalpha
      @ostiariusalpha 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@T_D_B_ Another Grendel fan here, have several rifles chambered for it. Still, I'll say that paper punching is just as popular as hunting, so don't pooh-pooh other people's pastimes. And I'm sure that .224 V will nail pigs and 'yotes at ranges far past what 5.56x45mm is capable of, so it's a paper puncher with a decent sideline.

Recoil is so light you can rapid fire and hit targets sub 500 yards. Spend the money on the lower..... trigger, PRS stock. Barrels are not very expensive and they are easy to install. With the Valkyrie, 300 Blackout, and 5.56 uppers the AR-15 can do anything I want pretty cheap.
      If you don't shoot 800 yards+ and don't reload Grendel is probably better. Barrels last longer and ammo is fairly inexpensive.

      Compared to the 6.5 Grendel, you get more velocity, but with less mass meaning terminal energy is either going to be comparable or favor the Grendel. There's nothing about the either round that will be more accurate than the other. Yes, theoretically the .224 Valkyrie has more long range potential, but we're talking 1200 yards instead of 1000 yards and that just isn't relevant to most shooters. What IS relevant is the fact that Valkyrie, Creedmoor, .22-250, etc burn through barrels in as little as 1000 rounds because of the high pressures and velocity. 6.5 Grendel has lower pressures than 5.56 so barrels last longer.

    • @EtherFox
      @EtherFox 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Federal recommends 1:7" for the majority of shooters who will use their cheaper bulk 60 and 75gr loads, and anything from 55-85 for that matter. They also state it works just fine in a barrel long enough to bring the 90gr over 2700fps. They recommend faster twists than 1:7" for builds that feature shorter barrels.
      Nuance and actually understanding subjects is difficult, though, so no worries, just carry on being an idiot, if at least a sarcastic idiot.

    Just bought the Mossberg Semi-Auto 224 Carbine and it is freaking phenomenal. With a red/green dot sight, I was hitting pretty much everything at 100 200 300 yards and unfortunately they didn’t have anything at this range past that. No I was eyeing a bird who looked like he was a half mile down the road. LOL. It’s definitely a growler rifle. Who has one of these and what suppressor are you using? I want something to quiet this thing as much as possible. Other than that, I am ridiculously happy with this gun. It’s no wonder they designed it for competition. Once that green dot was dialed in, I was just amazed how easy it was, as it pretty much hit anything. The problem with a weapon like this and especially once you get it dialed in, is then you want to start aiming at anything as far away as you can possibly hit it. Simply because you know that you probably can. LOL. But yeah, anybody out there that is using a suppressor like this or something even better, let me know what I need to get and where. Because if I could quiet this down to a whisper,It would be nuts. Basically a 224 caliber sniper rifle. Thank you in advance.
    You know how accurate and far a gun can hit, when after your first 5 to 10 rounds of using it for the first time... you start taking a deep breath and holding it, as if Osama bin Laden’s on the other end waiting for your call. LOL.
    You guys should do what I started doing and instead of using steel targets, go out and buy a bunch of used drum symbols and gongs if you can find them. One, you hear them much better and two, you get great flashes and sparks along with that sound. Definitely a much more exciting target to hit. Especially,The bigger the symbol you can find. You can find these all over eBay and Facebook, not to mention your local pawn shops and garage sales for almost nothing.

For anyone who wants to know how i tuned the rifle just replace the buffer spring with a JP TAKE THAT FLAT SPRING AND THROW IT IN THE GARBAGE its junk and replace the buffer weight with a H2 it will make the action a lot smoother and reduce bolt bounce and felt recoil.

    Compare this round to the appearance of the 5.45 x 39 and they look alarmingly similar. Ballastics may be different but the infamous Ak-74 round was also used in a bolt action rifle to a limited degree.
    The current line of firearms chambered in .224 Valkyrie are muzzle heavy and overpriced, both of which may be sorted out soon enough. I just can't see where this fits other than a new bench rifle to reach out a wee bit farther.
    In the right hands, the ubiquitous 308/7.62 x 51 has what takes and any requirements outside of it's effective range is best addressed with something above 185 grains.
    Small and fast penetrates body armor but bigger is just nastier at longer range. Yes, I know. It's just about having fun and trying new things. Goog luck finding exotic rounds during the next shortage, especially if it's ever a protracted one.

      224 Valkyrie was just designed to be a valid long range contender out of an ar15 sized action. It’s not meant to kill big game at long range, just hit steel and paper. It also remains supersonic past 1000 yards which is better than 308 even with heavy bullets

    I have been reading some of the comments on this and I am really amazed at how some people really should have not been allowed to ever own a gun. The stupid comments are laughable to say the least. People keep comparing the .224 to the 6.5 and that is apples and oranges. The .224 was developed for 2 things. 1) shooting paper out past 1300 yds with little recoil so it make shooting more enjoyable. 2) Varmint hunting. With this round you do little damage to the pelt, unlike bigger cartridges.
    Now we get into the shooting a barrel out at 1000 or 2000 rounds.... What type of dope are you smoking????? If you are shooting the barrel out with 2000 rds then you have one substandard barrel... I wonder if those who make that claim even understand what shooting a barrel out really means? You might have a slight reduction in accuracy after 2 to 3 thousand rounds, but that is a crap load of rds, and this myth that you need to shoot sub - MOA is unrealistic. I know for a fact, having been with the 12th SFG (Abn) that if your shooting MOA groups past 300 yards you are doing very well and they are all kill shots !!!!!! To many X-box rangers are on these comments and have a very skewed perception of reality..... This round is a great round and while there are kinks to work out it fits into it's place in your gun cabinet just fine.

      Heat is what destroys barrel. And when long range shooting or varmint hunting 1/4” matter. 1/4” at a hundred years is 3” at 1200. That’s the difference in being on the plate or off the plate. At that point you rebarrel. And the barrel to that person is shot out because it no longer fits their Individual needs. Now I’m not saying that that it won’t last more than 2000 rounds. But if you took an ar-15 chambered in 22-250 and shot 20 hundred round drum makes full auto not down time. The barrel would be trash if the gun itself didn’t blow to pieces from firing before the round chambers. Ending badly for the user. There is so much that goes into it that no one can say how many rounds it takes.

    • @johnvervalen1067
      @johnvervalen1067 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dieselman6.457 OK, but what is your point? That has nothing to do with my comment. You are trying to compare cooking your barrel out with normal shooting. Only a fool would do that to their barrel. In normal varmint hunting you could go 20 to 30 mins between shots, and long range shooting should not heat the barrel up that much to make a difference. If it did then most M-16's would be toast after the first firefight, and I am he to say from experience having been in them, that even if the barrel does get hot the barrel is of significant quality that you can still hit what your aiming at.
      To many people like to make claims that are so over the top when it comes to rounds and shooting out barrels that it is quite frankly ridiculous. In the real would normal people don't go out to destroy their guns, and those that think that every little variable is earth stopping really need to find a new hobby.

    • @dieselman6.457
      @dieselman6.457 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John Vervalen ignorance in its bliss I guess. If you read I said clearly it wouldn’t be shot out in 2000 rounds. Two I said in a 22-250 which is notably hotter than a 5.56 would trash a barrel in rapid fire. Speaking in terms of facts not just reality. I can make a 300 win mag not mess up hide, and have less recoil. A 6.5 creedmoor heavy barrel that’s more accurate has greater ballistics and low recoil. If you think 6.5 has recoil you shouldn’t own a gun. 338 and 50 bmg has recoil. Point is the gun is trying to fix an issue no one has even had or asked for. Second point being I didn’t disagree on anything but the heat is what breaks the barrel down. One round generates more heat so the second does more damage. Long range shooters shoot more than one round Aka the video long range multiple rounds in fast fire. Burning the barrel up. Hate somewhere else my point was temperature matter more than anything.

      Valkyrie is being picked up faster than any new round I've ever seen.
      Grendel has been around since 2003. Valkyrie maybe.....a year?
      And most AR barrel manufacturers have several choices for Valkyrie already. I like both calibers, if you want 800+yard performance in a AR-15, Valkyrie is a great choice for ringing gongs.

    I am excited to see how this round develops and manufacturers refine their products for it. A gun that maintains that speed and less drop over a long distance in a normal sized AR would be very cool. A lot more dudes have an AR-15 lower they could drop a .224 upper and bolt onto than money to build or buy an AR-10. Federal was smart to bank on that.

    F this, ill stick will ol trusty 5.56 and 308. Both are capable of hits to 1000 so good enough for me. I mean i doubt anyone is gonna get successful hits to the supposed 1300 yards with this 224 barrel burner. Reliability is key when it comes to guns and the 224 just failed.

      Being a barrel burner is complete speculation by keyboard commandos, I'm not seeing any appreciable throat wear at all after 2k rounds down this barrel. Per my data and GeoBallistics I'm showing the 90gr round going transonic around 1350 yards, so far the drop table has been spot on using their weather meter at my elevation of around 700-900 ft. Only pushed it to 800 so far though. Reliability? I've not had a single feeding or extraction issue out of the caliber at all between three different rifles. There are still some gremlins to work out, but once they are eliminated I fell this caliber will really be an awesome performer.

    • @donalddickins8493
      @donalddickins8493 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chads3356 its not keyboard commandos its based off the fact that the higher the velocity and the smaller the projectile the more wear you have on your barrel. If the 6.5 creedmoor is a barrel burner i would assume this would be just as bad if not worse.

    • @chads3356
      @chads3356 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Donald Dickins So far I’m not seeing it man. I expected to see some pretty apparent wear of the throat but it looks brand new, I was very surprised. Literally just looks at it a few hours ago. I spoke with the GM of JP Rifles yesterday and they have multiple barrels at 5k rounds with negligible throat wear. I feel that the “barrel burner” status was hyped up by people on forums that haven’t even shot the round honestly. The powders used in these top end loads are actually relatively slow as well, I mean I’m loading Reloader 17 now which is more of a light magnum powder.

      I have found that my 20" AR chambered in .224 Valkyrie with 88 ELD-M's likes it best @ 2690 fps out of a JP Rifles, rifle length +2" gas, 1:7 Cryo barrel. The std 90 gr SMK's were near 2850 fps. Too fast!!! The Valkyrie when dialed in with handloads doesn't shoot any faster than my 20" AR chambered in .223, pushing 68 gr BTHP Hornady projectiles. I have thousands of rounds out of the .223's 416R SS, 5R rifled barrel. I would expect that this .224 Valk barrel, with the same jump to the lands, to hold-up just as well. I have very close to 2000 rds down range so far with the .224 and it just keeps getting better. And not one single feed issue or malfunction!!!!!!!
      I still don't see why everyone wants to compare a .224" caliber with a 6.5 mm caliber? They are not equivalents.

    On squaring the reciever, im an amateur. I had tooling to make my own squaring tool and i use it on every one i put together. I have a machinist background so im on the basics of what it takes to get things straight and square. I built a 5.56 ar that i have $268.00 in that consistently puts them in a dime hole at 100 yds. Thats the longest available to me. My 6.5 grendal is no different. I built a 223 wylde for my stepson for christmas and the same results! The grendel cost me about $425.00. My 6.8 spc is there too. My budfies bushmaster got more accurate as well as his 6.5 grendel. We are pig hunters in florida. I dont have to lug that big heavy .35 lever gun anymore!

    Once this cartridge gets perfected, it will be a HUGE favorite especially the competitive shooting scene. Being able to reach out to over 1k yards with such a small projectile, in such a small platform, is a more comfortable AR platform with less recoil than a 6.5 creed. I've never been a Grendel guy, but I do own a few 6.5 Creedmoors and .260 Rem, and I love their accuracy at range. Obviously with the velocity of this projectile, you're going to run through barrels a little quicker, but I think competitiors won't care as long as they are getting optimum performance. I believe this will be like the 6.5 Creedmoor and actually will become popular, or it will be like the 5.7 and stick around because people have a vested interest in the cartridge. I doubt this cartridge dies unless a cartridge comes out that mimics its performance at a lower price point and AR build friendly, short action, low recoil (which is gonna be hard to do). I definitely want to try one of the AR platforms. As far as hunting or military applications, it's pretty much non existent, but for competitive long range, this can be a real winner.

    I've got to say, a lot of guys here dont know what they are talking about. Saying the same bullshit that people said 6.5 creedmoor was just a fad. Look where we are right now with that.
    To add to that, the 224 valkyrie has over a 6000 round barrel life, even hot rodding the 90 grain pills to 2800 or more.
    There are guys shooting these in PRS swapping barrels around the 6k mark. Some are getting more. It is an extremely low recoil flat shooting round.
    Simply put, people need to do more research. Frank Gallie, anyone who knows anything about long range shooting knows who that is, got 3 for 3 hits at a mile with a bolt action 224 valkyrie.
    Obviously, every cartridge has its pros and cons and each has its purpose, otherwise everyone would be shooting the same exact setup. Regardless, people need to be a bit more open minded and quit jumping to conclusions saying new things are "just fads".
    To add on to it, factory ammo for this is cheap as hell. Yeah it isnt as cheap as 223. but when you compare it to any 6mm that actually do burn barrels. It is significantly cheaper.

    • @billbee235
      @billbee235 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Frank also is running a JP and he's a scout sniper, so he's maximizing the potential of the platform. I also think that a lot of these guys that are upset about accuracy are not realistic. Gas guns are harder to shoot than bolt guns. The entire video you can see the younger shooter slapping the trigger and not follow through (holding the trigger back and control reset) on a single shot. That certainly affects accuracy significantly. I think the last few years there's been a lot of hype about hyper accurate gas guns on TH-cam. Even with a Wilson Combat, Les Baer, JP Enterprises, Nemo, etc AR platform I doubt a lot of the TH-cam studs could still shoot an MOA group with the exception of a few.
