  • This made-for-video documentary treats film fans to a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Ben-Hur, a classic which has seen many incarnations on the silver screen, but perhaps most notably as William Wyler's 1959 epic. Includes footage from all three film versions of the tale, as well as discussion of the impact they had on later filmmakers.

Lucky you, dear 88 y o! I hope they will upload the whole film for us all to see for free soon. What is particularly precious in it to you? To me, it was the facial expression of the impact looking into the face of Jesus Christ made upon Judah Ben Hur, and how that military giúard denying Judah a drink of water in the heat along with the others, but not withstanding Jesus Christ's correction, being powerless before His I. Has Ben Hur lived for real? I haven't heard of him, so don't think so.

I was 12 and in grade six at a Catholic school when our class was taken to a Saturday matinee of Ben-Hur during its first run. To say it was a memorable experience for me would be an understatement. The film remains one of my top favourites and I have been listening to the majestic score ever since.

Ramon navarro's death at 69 was so shocking. Beaten by 2 brothers who posed as escorts from an agency offering him sex. They tortured him for 7 hours thinking he had loads of money in his home which he did not. Choked on his own blood from the beatings. Even more shocking was how the brothers were given life but paroled in just 7 years.

When a movie is so iconic it basically all but erases an already fine original from public consciousness you know it cannot have been made any better. Ladies and Gentlemen, Ben Hur (2016) is such a landmark.

Never understood the context that Gore Vidal was going after with "Lovers Quarrel" and "emotional relationship" between the characters @31:36 can anyone explain this segment further?? Or why try to write it to imply? The fuse I think was from my pov was that Messala wanted power and his friend would not support him.

When Vidal was called in to doctor the script, he made an attempt to try something different and bounce something different. This screenwriting is nothing new for the movies. Vidal, of course, was one of America's most famous GAY writers of the time. And it makes sense to at least view this objectively. There WERE, after all, homosexuals in the first century. Look at the famous toasting scene where Ben-Hur's and Messala's meet before sipping the, uh, the forbidden fruit of the vine.

But it is not the number of prizes that decides the greatness of a work of art. The judges may not have the sensibility to be the best judges. And there may be trends, prestige, money and policy involved in the nomination and decision. As good as Titanic is, it is not in the same class as Ben Hur. She was not a convincing heroine and not worthy of his sacrifice, at least to my feeling. What do you think of "Gone With the Wind"?

2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

Imho Boyd was a far superior actor to Heston and would have made an amazing Ben Hur. The narrator of this piece Christopher Plummer an amazing Mersala. Heston was never believeable being too detached, stiff and wooden. His love scenes are always cringeworthy. Similarly Liz Taylor ruined Cleopatra. She was an american broad to her very bones and Sophia Loren would have brought the exoticism and class the role so needed. Burton and Harrison were both superb.

Stephen should have won an Oscar for his performance but it was politics as usual in Hollywood. If Stephen had one, there would have been a huge frenzy the over shadowed Heston's win. That is the main reason he was not given an Oscar or allowed to even accept a statuette for any other actor in their absence. Still angers me to this day.
