  • Today I'm going to walk you through everything from the supplies I use, to how I blend my paint and even show you how to complete your first oil painting using glazing techniques!
    Oil painting has this reputation for being a more advanced medium to work in. People think it's going to be too hard and everyone's heard about the trouble with muddy colors. I will let you in on a little secret; Oil painting is one of the easier mediums to work in IF you know how to use mixing medium and when to let your paint dry between layers.

    Really good video, I like the way you speak quickly and to the point. Several others ramble on and on and take ages, but you are superb. Thank you !
    The silver paper idea is new to me, but I really prefer a grey pallet, because it helps me a lot to judge colours better. I also use a piece of cellophane wrapped around a piece of stiff cardboard about 5 inches square painted grey to use as a micro pallet on which to mix colours and then place next to the canvas, or a reference photograph. Of course when the cellophane is covered with paint, you can discard it and wrap a new piece of cellophane around the piece of grey cardboard. I find this is most useful with acrylics, but it also works with oils
    Kind regards to all and good luck with you TH-cam channel - Chris in Thailand

    you really made wanting to work with oils a lot easier. So use of seeing people using tons of paint, which was scary. You broke it down in such a way - that I might need to review this. In college - they also made it really difficult, to were I did not want to learn it. Believe I still have all of those paints... been a good 30 years now... hmmm Thank you for the this! You are awesome!

    Lisa, this is so fantastic. I really like how you show your detail work. your camera angle and zoom give the viewer an up front and personal view of what you do and how you do ti. All your videos are great (all of them), but these detail views of your work help so much. All the information is so well discussed. We all can hear the words under-painting, glazes, and so forth, but until we actually see it done up close and personal, they are just words. I am so please that you are not just satisfied to do more of the same videos (are great in their own right) and you want it to take it to the next level. You are great, Lisa; always have been and always will be. Great video, great.

    I wouldnt be worried about "muddy" colors and colors mixing on your painting. I believe that is in fact a positive effect of oil paint which is what makes this medium so beautiful. Oil paint has so much potential especially when you loosen up and allow randomness to take place. We all have our own style!

    This was a really good video that takes you through the basics of oil painting. I was wondering though, would you consider making an introduction to acrylics video. I feel like one of the reasons I struggle with painting on the whole so much is because I don't know how to use the paint properly and each type of paint works a bit differently and I think an intro to acrylics might help a lot of people.

    Hi Lisa. I've got a design ready on the canvas of a Raven and a rose for a oil painting with a cloudy sky, bird flying, all that good stuff. I will be using this method you display here since it'll be much easier, though not sure to use the 3 colours you used in this video or if I can get away with black and white for the first step before glazing? Does it matter which one I choose or will the raw umber be better to add in?

  • @Sakuems
    @Sakuems 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    THANK YOU ! i learned so much

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Sakuems I just wipe the mop brush off between colors. If I get it too dirty, I switch to a clean brush. This brush has to be 100% dry to work, so cleaning it won't work.
      To get your work more contoured, just blend less. Apply the paint more cleanly allowing for more contrast between your edges and background.
      Yep, sounds like you've got the idea of glazing down right :)
      For glazing I would pick up some liquin. Non fast drying mediums take SO LONG to dry! You can glaze with any mixing medium though.
      I don't know anything about the van Gogh oils, but any quality set will glaze fine. Lesser paints can lift, even when dry when applying glazes. Water mixable oils aren't like working with real oil. I passionately hate them. They really should be considered a different medium all together IMO. The only way those work like oils is if you use an oil mixing medium with them instead of water...which pretty much defeats the purpose of using water mixable. If you want to really oil paint, stick with real oils :D
      Any odorless mineral spirits or paint thinner will work just fine for cleaning your brush. The masters is a must have for me, but you will need both a paint thinner/OMS and a separate brush soap if you really want your brushes to last.
      I can't wait to see what you paint!!

    • @Sakuems
      @Sakuems 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lachri Fine Art thank you so much for all your answers ! :D i got some regular oil paint and the liquin ! and also the set of make up brushes (that has like 6 mop brushes)i can't wait to start painting too, will definitely make a video :D

  • @jasoninge5309

    Wonderful video! I usually paint my seascapes in acrylic, but I've been thinking about going over the finished acrylic paintings with oils to get more subtle blending effects. This video makes me totally excited to jump right into oils. However, the Liquitex Basics acrylics I use dry to a matte finish (which I like). I'm afraid I might have random shinny spots where the oils are used.

    So do you not clean your brushes with the thinner every time you change the colors on your brush? I heard of people not using thinner when they change colors but I don't see how you can't use thinner when you change colors without the colors contaminating each other.

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It depends. If I'm going from a dark brown and want to use white on that same brush, then yes I will need to use paint thinner. If I'm going from yellow to brown, I only need to wipe the paint from the brush on a paper towel. Normally I just use different brushes for lights or darks so that I can just wipe them between colors without worrying about it.

    It would be helpful if you inserted, at the bottom left, your reference photo.
    You mention letting your painting dry over night.
    Does the Liquin cause faster drying?
    Or does the greater percentage of solvent aid the drying speed?

  • @Yzjoshuwave
    @Yzjoshuwave 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice apple! I would definitely eat it ;) I especially like the way you got the veins and highlights in the leaf and the shadow underneath the leaf made it pop nicely.
    I'm wondering if you have any experience with water-based oils. I bought them about 15 years ago, because I wanted to avoid the toxic solvents of regular oils. They're not quite so soft and buttery as ordinary oils, but I've loved them, so I just kept going with those instead of switching to true oils. At some point, I bought some fast-dry medium. I hoped, when I first bought it, that it would stay blendable throughout my painting session, but would still dry for the next day. It does dry quickly, but my experience has been that it loses it's blendability fairly quickly. Using water (solvent) to soften up tacking medium doesn't soften it smoothly and it wants to break up into little gummy balls. Not what I want at all. For this reason, I've been using water-based linseed oil, which seems to take about a week to be thoroughly dry.
    I've been considering the switch to actual oils, but the initial investment is significant and I really want to be sure I get what I'm looking for. First, I'm wondering how long you find liquin to stay smooth and blendable. Can you use a solvent to get it to become melty and blendable? Do you find that it tacks up in the middle of your session?
    Thank you so much for the clear explanations and anything you can say about this!!! When I can afford to support people on Patreon, you'll be in my shortlist. And happy painting :)

    Thanks so much for this Lisa! I've been debating whether to start acrylics or oils for a long time after doing a lot in graphite, colored pencil and watercolor and it almost seems like oils are a more economical medium because you need less paint and medium especially if you're working relative small like i like to do (anywhere from 8x10 to 18x24) plus the brushes last longer. Question: if you don't have space for a full easel, is newspaper enough to protect a table from oils or is just covering with the Viva a better option.

    Wow you do awesome work. Do you have any opinion about "old Master" style painting? Is it too stuffy for modern collectors and too much trouble to create?

    • @renzo6490
      @renzo6490 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Take a look at the contemporary work of Jacob Collins, Jeremy Lipking, Jordan Sokol, Juliette Aristides, Gary Faigin, Will St. John, Justin Wood and especially Colleen Barry !
      These artists produce work in the 'old master' style.
      There is always a market for excellence in painting.
      As for it being 'too much trouble to create' that depends on how much effort you are willing or unwilling
      to devote to the mastery of painting.

    I SO wish you would do "studio vlogs" it would be soooo inspiring and motivating for me (and others). I don't know if you remember me but I've been subscribed for years. Even if you only took a minute clip telling us what you are currently doing every once in a while throughout the day or week. You can show what you're painting on, cleaning brushes, editing, buying supplies etc etc. also, since you have to wait a full day to let this dry, do you just move on to the next painting in the mean time?? (This is another thing that would be so interesting to see in vlogs)

      I post stuff I'm working on on instagram for the most part. I don't have time to upload more videos here though as I'm currently doing four regular videos a week, a weekly livestream and a patreon video and a colored pencil podcast lol. When I wait for an oil painting to dry, I usually work on editing videos or clean my studio :D

    An older artist told me once that's good way to quick dry oils was to turn on the oven light, not the oven itself, and let the painting sit under the light for a little while. I've never painted in oil so idk if it works but it sounded like an interesting tip.

    Hi Lisa! I see alot of tutorials out there discussing about the fat over lean rule to avoid cracking and it's quite confusing to me.... mixing the oil and the solvent to the correct proportions at different layers. Instead you just used one medium liquin throughout. What is the difference between manually mixing the oil/solvent and just using liquin? What is your advise to beginners regarding this fat over lean rule because it's quite intimidating! Also, Im not sure if liquin is available from where im at and not sure what I can substitute with. Thank you for your reply!! :)

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Liquin isn't actually thinning the paint like paint thinner does. All of my layers are pretty equal as far as how fat/lean they are so it's not something I really ever have to worry about. Artists who paint with super thinned down layers and super thick paint have to be aware of this though. If you put a layer that is fat (little to no paint thinner) then a layer over that that is very very thin (with paint thinner), you can cause cracking in the paint because of how each of those layers dries differently. Doing the reverse is no problem. You can put the thin layers first then layer very fat layers over with no issue :)
      If you paint like I do in this video, you really don't need to worry about it.

      Thanks for the reply, Lisa. What if I only have linseed oil & turpentine, how do I create glazes for the top layers? (as the top layers have to be fat, but yet have less paint and more transparency)

  • @000bullets
    @000bullets 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also I've always wondered about toning a canvas, I hear people make a big deal out of it but I don't understand why it can be important, cause I mean if your style is glazing and you do like 80 layers then what would it matter anyways if you can't see the first layer anymore, and if your style is alla prima then I would thing it would be useless since your putting a little thicker opaque paint over it. I'm a beginner so any explanation would help, I think if someone painted a painting over a toned canvas then paint the same painting on a non toned canvas it would be easy to understand.

    • @MaryDraws
      @MaryDraws 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +000bullets having a toned canvas to work on can help you judge the colors better than a stark white canvas. It also helps map out what you are doing. You don't need to see the first layer when the painting is done for it to have been useful.

    Wonderful tutorial. Question .... Many artist talk about the toxicity of liquin if used indoors. Can you comment on that please from your own experience?

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've read a lot about it and I've been using it for over 20 years. Personally, I feel there are harsher things we use on a fairly regular basis for cleaning that I'm more concerned with than this. I'm prone to headaches and nausea. This has never caused issues for me. I've never worked with a student in person who had any issues working with liquin. Don't eat it. I would not recommend use of it in a room with a bird as they are sensitive to fumes. I regularly use it in a room with dart frogs (frogs are pretty sensitive to environmental toxins) and they've not had any negative reaction. They still breed constantly (which is a sign of a healthy frog).

    I have a question: When you paint, can you just use paint thinner as your mixing medium? That's what I do but I feel like it it's just not right? (if you get what I mean) Thanks! :D

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Deya Liao You can but you really have to watch the fat over lean rule there because the paint thinner is making the paint super "lean". You wouldn't want to then use thicker paint and add a glaze of paint thinned with the paint thinner over it or you could cause damage later on as it dries. I feel using just paint thinner to thin your paints really limits what you can safely do with the paint.

    Lisa!!!! Oh my, thank you sooooo much for this, you are a saint! I have been looking for a simplified tutorial such as this for years!!! It made oils so easy to understand and to not be afraid of trying them, as a person who wants to learn oil painting what scares me most is following that fat over lean rule, do you follow that? Or is it less of a problem if liquin is used? Also I heard people use cobalt driers, is liquin easier to use than those? Again I appreciate this so much!!

    • @joyepittura
      @joyepittura 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Julie C. Hi, I have been learning oils as well. This was helpful for glazing..however, if you want to paint all in one sitting..not waiting for the paint to dry..and use no mediums..have a look at paintwithkevin..he paints alla prima..no mediums..no wait time for drying..and very good demos. Hope this helps..good luck and have fun on your journey...

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The fat over lean rule is really more if you are painting really thick. With me, all of my layers are about the same. Essentially you don't want to paint really thick like with a palette knife then glaze over it. That can cause the thicker (fat) layers to crack, which is especially important if you're thinning your thin (lean) layers down with paint thinner. The mixing mediums count as "fat" so if all of your layers are about the same, then you should have no problems.

    Wonder if you can use Linseed Oil alone without the Liquin... reason is we don't have such medium here available in most of our art supplies:(, not really sure I saw one.

    Do you clean the mop brush in thinner every time you use it or, do you use different mop brushes?

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use different mop brushes if one gets dirty. You can't do more than wipe it on your towel and still be able to use it that day. When you clean a mop brush it can take a week to dry out all the way, so you want several of them.

    Hey Lisa! This video was very helpful, so thank you so much for posting it! I've been working in colored pencils for awhile now, and a little bit in acrylic. I was wondering what your opinion is on water soluble oils? I don't know if you have tried them, but they seem to be a big trend recently and was wondering if they'd be something worth trying. Thanks. xx

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +theartisticbunny I passionately hate water soluble oils. The only way they work like oils is if you use an oil mixing medium with them, which pretty much defeats the purpose of working with water soluble. The consistency of the paint just isn't right otherwise. If you really want to experience oil painting, use real oils :)

    I have a question about the shadow that runs a quarter of the way around the apple in the lower right quadrant.
    It makes it look as if there is an indentation in the side of the apple.
    Why doesn't the shadow extend all the way to the bottom edge?
    Why is the bottom edge catching the light when there is shadow just above it?
    It's difficult to describe what I mean without being able to point.

    As a beginner, when you’re poor af and can’t afford good canvas. Just buy a big tube of white acrylics and prime the cheap canvas with 2-3 layers and paint when it’s dry. Super smooth, never had problems with blending this way.

    im a beginner, i like your video, but i wanna ask, when i paint my first layer it looks grainy, not so smooth at all, i use paint thinner as my medium, is that the problem? and if i want to paint landscape, do i have to wait between layers? and how long?? thank you for sharing the video!

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It very well could be. Paint thinner is...well paint thinner. It is not a medium so the results will be quite different. Letting it dry between layers depends not on the subject, but the style you're going for. All wet into wet like Bob Ross won't need to dry (although most beginners still create mud that way). I work in glazes creating more depth so my methods (landscape, wildlife, still life...anything) will need to dry between those layers. The amount of time depends on how thickly you apply the paints and which medium or paints you choose to work in.
