DCS: F-14B Tomcat | How to Dogfight! | BFM Tips & Tricks

  • Hey Guys, I wanted to put together a video to help out anyone who is having trouble with dogfighting in the F-14B Tomcat or who might doubt the ability of the F-14 in the BFM arena.
    The best piece of advice is Practice, Practice, Practice, and Rudder, Rudder, Rudder...
    However, with practice and honed F-14 Tomcat flying skills the F-14 is a monster in a dogfight and the F-14B & D's GE F-110 engines allow you to dictate how the fight plays out through the ability to engage and disengage at will.
    This video is a live commentary as I rewatch footage of some BFM, Guns only engagements with my friends James and Straywolf. I talk about the best way to employ the F-14 in a knife fight as I fly against on the best DCS: F-5E Tiger pilots I know.

    The F-14 feels extremely realistic. We should never give in to people who would advocate to make the flight model easier to suit their ability or wants. The F-14 requires skills, that is what is so awesome about it. The hard work required to get up to a good level is what is so awesome about DCS!

      @@MongooseTacticool Agree. I'm new to DCS and yes at the begining the learn curve is overwhelming, (at least for a solo player like me) but if you are interested in something you will learn rather quick. And if you want easy mode go with arcade setting or play ace combat, there are PLENTY of dumbed down games.... we don't need more. I started with the MIG-29 (I had to... because I'm a good German!😂) and it's really fun to fly, but the tomcat is a REAL challenge and has me "glued" to my PC for the whole week now. I'm flying the tomcat for 1 week now and I went from stalling, ripping wings off and flat spins to flying "decent" ("decent" meaning = I don't allahu akbar the plane anymore😂 and I get some enemies killed!) But what I enjoy the most is that you have to figure out the limits of the tomcat yourself, everytime you just push it a little more, and more, and more. It's an amazing experience!

      Yes man, the AI is ridiculous some times... I'm new to DCS and I'm only practicing against AI for now. I'm really NOT good but after 1 week flying the tomcat I'm getting a feel for it. AI F5's are kinda broken, they outclimb, outturn you almost all the time. Even the F4's are insane. I have started with the mig-29 and then I jumped staight into the tomcat, and I have to say, it is MUCH more rewarding flying the tomcat, and in some points even easyer, specialy triming the thing (mig-29 trim is kind of a nightmare). The tomcat just needs lots of practice, and that's just what I was looking for! That being said, it's time for my next A2A practice session! I cut my teeth on the old IL2 flight sim way back when, so it didn't take too much practice to retrain myself to use rudder all the time. My only problem (aside from the spotting issues in DCS, but that's another discussion :) ) is that the Tomcat's engines are so powerful, that I find myself repeatedly exceeding corner speed. It would be incredibly helpful if Heatblur would tweak JESTER so that he would perform as you say and give airspeed call outs while you're busy trying to kill your bandit.
    I emphatically agree with you though. It DOES take practice, but it's worth the effort. As you say, it's quirky, but the enormous lifting surfaces and the monstrous power of the F110s make the F-14B a very good BFM machine.
    Grumman Aviation knew what they were doing.

    Great video. F-14 was a phenomenal dogfighter. It was extremely maneuverable for its size and could carry energy throughout the fight and even add energy in vertical fights. It was very technical and pilot-oriented to master, but it ultimately had much higher limits in the envelope because it was so directly controlled. In a vertical fight, it simply was very difficult to match or beat.

    I REALLY struggle to spot targets in DCS these days. Even on a 1080p monitor, my eye sight isn’t quite as good as it used to be and they seem to have totally done away with the “dots” that would make locating aircraft actually feasible. Now it’s like trying to “spot the pixel” especially if the target is low and amongst terrain. I’ve resorted to having the dot labels on aircraft otherwise it’s a bit of a joke.

    • @KLRGT500KR
      @KLRGT500KR 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Not the best, but F-14 was an absolutely great dogfighter provided the pilot had enough hours in it and knew how to control the surfaces himself. He is right, one simply cannot do things in a FBW plane that one can do mechanically and directly controlling the surfaces as it allows pushing to the absolutely limits of the envelope. F-18 wise, it is only dependent on the type of fight, as the established facts are, the F-18 excelled at slow speed and high alpha fights while F-14 was all about high energy, higher knots (over 300 knots) and lots of verticals. An F-18 would never want to go into a vertical with an F-14 and it comes directly from Joe 'Smokin' Ruzaicka who flew both F-18/F-14. Conversely, F-14 would never want to get into a 'groveling' slow fight with an F-18.

    • @Spudknocker
      @Spudknocker  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      KLRGT500KR it comes down to the aircraft you love and playing to the strengths of the aircraft you want to fly, a lot of what I said about flying against the F-5 is gonna hold true with the F/A-18C only thing I would change and have changed flying against the hornet is I would be more careful with my entering into a turning fight and be more selective with it whereas I can be a bit more cavalier with the F-5 but I do Believe the same idea apply of when you lose the advantage pull vertical and control the tempo of the fight.
      When it comes to a missile fight my Phoenixes kill the Hornet at 50NM and if he survives that and I survive a salvo of -120’s I do a forward quarter shot of a Sparrow or -9 Mike and don’t engage man turning fight at all with him due to his -9X’s

    Fantastic Spud - I came from Aces High online for 20 years, and all fighters there are mostly split into turn and energy fighters. Nice to see someone in the DCS world giving some explanations as to how to use a fighter like the F14 which takes advantage of both, and can really use the energy fighting tactics well. Very good examples here of when to break off trying to get your nose into an advantageous position and go back up into the vert using superior thrust and the F14's ability to "out pitch back" pretty much every fighter out there in DCS. We were lucky in Aces High to have a former F14 pilot in the game, who was a TG insctructor as well as flew with the VX squadron and flew those black Vandy planes. He also had more Aim54 shots than probably anyone alive outside of Iran. Lots of what you mentioned here was an echo of things he had posted over the 10 years he played AH2/3 (Mace2004 on the forums there).

    You can pull those desperate high G maneuvers in the FA-18. All you need to do is pull the lever on the stick (lever that disengages autopilot), hold it down, and as long as you are holding down it will turn OFF the G-limiter on the FCS. That 7.5G limit will be gone giving you unfettered access to all the G's your body, speed, and the airframe are capable of. This feature is specifically for reasons like were described here in his gun shot and various other emergency situations. I very rarely use it, but when I do it's brief such as getting my nose quickly on the ahead of a bandit to make a snap gunshot early in a merge or to avoid hitting the ground when I do something stupid. You lose tons of energy extremely rapidly if you just hold down the G-Limit override paddle and keep pulling...even if your F-18 is in A/A config with no wing tanks. The only NATO aircraft of the same era as the F-18 that can sustain these insane high G's without loosing energy is the F-16 at low altitude.
    Other than that great video!
    Here's a video (for anyone who hasn't seen it) showing actual tactics taught to F-14 pilots at Miramar against F-4's and F-5's.

      The G override paddle enables you to pull more than 7.5G, but the Hornet is FBW, even when the limiter is off, the Tomcat's control surfaces are directly connected to the stick, where you can force a departure of flight easily, good luck doing the same in the Hornet even with the limiter off.

If he was flying something better than a F-5, Spudnocker would have had a bad day.
    From my experience most DCS pilots start getting problems at either aircraft handling (-> stall, no control over airspeed) or BFM basics. Before you can make up tactics, you need to learn the rules (like in chess). Nevertheless Spudnocker did a great job flying and editing.

    Coming from WW2 planes, I definitely like the F-14. FBW aircraft seem so bland and boring regarding the flying.
    Tip for turning - you can go below optimal speed and help yourself with flaps in 1 on 1 with tight turner to get extra lift. Helps against AI F-5s and MiG-21s.

    Brilliant video dude. My mates and I have been commenting on how real world Tomcats pilots who transitioned to Hornet, could hold so much love for the legacy type. Or course there must be a reason and it sounds like practice practice practice is the only way to get the most out of the Cat. I got rudder pedles and thought I'd blown it, as I can't yet see the advantage. So again, I need to tweak things to get the most from the set-up. Tomcat is shaping up to be my favorite module, just getting tired of having my arse handed to me LOL. Cheers Spud, keep up the great vids.

    Cool video :) I have a bit of a correction though - the F5's area of comfort is most definitely not sub 300 KIAS. Its max instantaneous turn rate is somewhere around 350/380, and maximum sustained turn rate is achieved a bit over 400. Even the official manual states that the F5's maneuverability greatly degrades below 300 knots.
    On a related not I think it's interesting how I see other pilots discuss the F14's FM. I flew the F5 rather than the F18 and while the Tomcat is certainly challenging in BFM, it doesn't feel that hard to fly, just a bit grumpy sometimes.

  • @bikeguy3034
    @bikeguy3034 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Yeah this is my experience in the Tomcat also, just go into the verrtical and then dive down in an advantageous position on the bandit if they stay low. If they try to come up with you, they just have so much less energy that you can easily run rings around them. But I do find you don't want to get below 200 knots too often, is quite slow to accelerate again unless you are going down hill. Being on the other side of the equation it is very frustrating fighting an aircraft than can always position higher than you whilst maintaining energy, and any time you even try to put your nose up in his direction he will have the advantage energy-wise and position his aircraft with ease.
    Also absolutely agree, you just can't beat those direct flight controls! Best feeling aircraft to fly in DCS to date!

    The F-14 may be able to out turn the Hornet, but in my opinion the Hornet is more easily controlled pulling a lot of alpha. Based on that capability in some instances someone in the Hornet that is aware of the situation may be able to end a fight before a Tomcat can start out turning him. It's a low percentage shot that will leave you slow and dead if you miss, but when it works it's a pretty savage kill.
