  • Travel vlog #35 | Girne, Northern Cyprus| Filmed February-March 2022
    Cyprus is a tadpole-shaped island in the Eastern Mediterranean that has been a stepping stone between Africa, the Middle East, and Europe for thousands of years.
    For the past 48 years, it has been divided between the Republic of Cyprus in the South and the de facto Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
    Officially an Occupied Territory, Northern Cyprus is only recognized by Türkiye and is dependent on it for its continued existence.
    It was fascinating to explore this country that's not a country, and we learned a lot in the process.
    To go more in-depth than we can cover on the history and current situation in Cyprus, here's an excellent 4-part video series:

    About Us:
    -------------------------------------------------------
    We are Matt and Avic; Matt grew up in Virginia, USA, and Avic in Quezon City, Philippines. Since we started dating back in the 1990s, travel has been a major part of our relationship.
    By May of 2021, both of our sons were out on their own and we were fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus. We decided to quit our jobs, sell our house, get rid of most of our stuff (store the rest), and set out on a Nomadic Life.
    “Explore Tayo” means “let’s explore” in Taglish (blended Tagalog-English.) “Tayo” is the inclusive “we” vs the exclusive “kami." This isn’t just OUR journey, we want to include everyone who watches our videos or visits our site so we hope you will hit "like" and "subscribe" and come along for the ride!

    North Cyprus is a fascinating place. Beautiful landscapes
    and History . Crime free . And , just as in Turkey , people
    are generous and hospitable . ( ......and No.....before you ask I am not Turkish !! )

      We were very pleasantly surprised there. But the economy is suffering from the lack of international recognition. Türkiye is not able to fully support them alone.

      Land that being stolen

    • @ExploreTayo
      @ExploreTayo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some say that, yes. But don't forget that Greek Cypriots stole Turkish land also.

      @@ExploreTayo to be fair when the Ottoman Turks arrived 500 years ago the island was owned by catholic venetians of nordic origin, who treated their orthodox greeks as slaves with no land rights. It was the Ottomans Turks who allowed the greeks to own land and practice the orthodox religion freely. Without the Turks most likely Cyprus remains a catholic possession and maybe the greeks don't exist there.

      @billyjesus5442 Exactly! We talk about that in this vlog, regarding the churches in old Famagusta.

    Simit sarayı isnt an english bakery, its a Turkish bakery chain

    • @ExploreTayo

      Thanks for watching and for the comment! There's little information at the bakery itself to know who runs it, but a friend said it was an English bakery. Maybe it was at one point? Checking the Simit Sarayi website, it's not an official part of the chain.

      The Greeks were prolific in their colonization of the Eastern Mediterranean, for sure. Many times they did displace the Phoenicians who were there first, but that's how history goes.

    • @issith7340
      @issith7340 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ExploreTayo greece is in noth coasts of aegean sea. So greeks started colonising the rest of Mediterranean coasts, from their mother-cities ( metropolis in greek) that were situated in modern day greece as in ionia( west asia minor ( or anatolia as it’s referring today). People living in inland anatolia, like frugians, lydians, thracians, etc, were closely related to greeksas they were speaking almost identical languages. When we’re speaking about greek colonisation we never include western anatolia, because this area is considered as part of Greece as well. Don’t get confused, with that. As it has to do with cyprus, greeks , indeed, started to displace frnicians from the islandmore that 1000 bc, . This is more than 3000 years ago. Tell me, when did turks appear in cyprus? Cause i want to cross check, how history works. I remember so many allien people appearing in cyprus in the past. But as these allien invaders desapear from the face of earth, greeks are still in cyprus. This is how history worked there. Or didn’t it?

    • @ExploreTayo
      @ExploreTayo  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@issith7340 yes, the Greeks had early settlements on Greece, but so did Phonecia, Assyria, Egypt, and Persian until Alexander conquered Persia. Then Greece and Ptolemaic Egypt controlled it until Rome, then Byzantium. For a while, it was joint Byzantine and Arab.
      Richard I of England conquered it during the 3rd Crusade and there was a Latin kingdom there until Venice bought it in 1489. So the Ottomans defeated the Venetians in 1571. Yes, Greek people were there during all of that, even though they hadn't ruled the island in centuries.
