@RaseYourProbs yeah but we were in and around that area and the constant bad decisions and draining and exploiting of the club made us a yoyo club for the future. Finishing from top 6 down to hoping we could scrape 16/17 position for many years
@geordiejaygaming2878 I dislike Ashley as much as the next Newcastle fan, but for what it's worth, he actually kept his word. He'd sell us on to a party that can take us to the next level. And every time we were relegated, he dug deep, kept as many of our assets as he could, took the hit and got promoted straight back. But it was a horrendous time to be a Newcastle fan, I remember a victory over wigan or reading would be celebrated like a win over a big 6 side today. 🤣 To be fair, the big 6 in England don't allow their status to be challenged, the league itself upholds anti competition laws. So besides a state challenging them, I don't think any other private individual would've fared much better.
It's all well and good saying Ashley didn't leave us with loads of debt, but the squad was so under-invested in for years. PSR means you need to sell players but outside of 8 or 9 of the first 11 we had no-one worth more than a fiver.

All theses big money coming into the league in recent years and we never got a whiff of it except tv money because Ashley didnt even bother to grow the commercial side of the club and is more concerned about using Newcastle to advertise his own business for free.

Ashley left us in a right mess. We had no money coming into the club because he wanted his businesses plastered all over the stadium instead of getting sponsors in to build up the clubs finances. When Ashley took over the club we used to be the 9th richest club in the world and had the second or third best stadium in the league, while he was there we dropped right down to 24th or something, he left the stadium in a right state. Thats what he done to this club, not leave it in a financially sound position like Simon Jordan claims.
I’m a season ticket holder and Ashley actually left us DEBT FREE - he used to pay every transfer out right in full and never spread the payments. Yes he didnt have any sponsorship money coming in but in regards to debt he left us in a brilliant position, that’s the only positive thing he ever did
Simon is utterly wrong in this point - Mike Ashley did not leave Newcastle in a good position as you have to consider before him we were Champions league under Keegan & Robson & miles ahead of Spurs - Under Ashley we were relegated twice & £100s of millions behind Spurs in squad value & revenue. What turnover would Mr Jordan have left the business with after 15 years from that starting position? I'm sure he would not have done such a pathetic job thinking small.
So up until the point of Mike Ashley leaving, we were one of the few premier league clubs not in any debt. Yea to do that he bought players cheap and sold them when they got more value so we could never develop our squad, but the point Simon is making is from a more financial view rather than a strength of squad view. If we were in debt, we would of had even less money to spend that what we have been able to which is not much but still something
Not sure, too early to tell. No chance will we finish above 6th. If we play more consistently well this season then perhaps we can but 7th or 8th is more likely when you consider the teams that have strengthened their squads in the summer whereas we didn't.
