As Peter Zeihan famously constantly points out, Russian farmland is terrible. It's why they've never had the capital to build a Western style road network and have to rely on rail, in some areas a single rail line supplying the only transportation route to many areas of the country. Most of Russia's agriculture is Zone 4 (both cold and dry about similar to the north of Maine) and not good for much more than dry land wheat. Kursk and Belgorod contain an intrusion of the black soil geologic feature that composes half of Ukraine's arable land that makes it the 'breadbasket of Europe'. It's also far enough south to be Zone 5 (about the same as upstate New York)and is a significant agricultural producer especially of meat and dairy. You might ask what significance this has? The harvest period for Zone 5 is mid August through mid September when the first frost typically occur. Because of the territory actually captured, the surrounding area in contention and the evacuation of civilians from an even greater area the harvest of one of the most productive agricultural areas in Russia has literally been left to rot in the fields. It's not going to cause food shortages, but it will drive additional price inflation on a lot of food items.
@@jackthorton10 As the current American election points out, when the cost of your groceries doubles over a short period and the selection of favorite foods becomes less reliable, the populace tends to get a mite testy. Of course, the simple fact they were invaded is cause for legitimate concern.
@@massivereader I believe there is a saying somewhere about any given country being four consecutive missed meals away from a revolution? Food availability is critical in many ways. In short; Ukraine did a funni and if the cards fall in the right place it could end up being somebody shanking Putin for a loaf of bread sometime in the distant future.
@@UnbreakableTaco I don't think it's likely that Russia will have famine-level food shortages since they are a major grain exporter. They will simply keep all their reduced harvest for domestic consumption. They do have crop failures on a fairly regular basis (every decade or so, historically about eight times a century) when they have a dry winter with little or no snow pack, don't get the regular spring rains or have an especially dry or hot summer (too hot and wheat doesn't form mature seed heads at all or the grains are few and very small, so there is little or no crop to harvest). They are just about due for a crop failure, IIRC the last one was in 2012? It set off the Arab Spring revolts in the Middle East and Northern Africa as the price off grain doubled or even tripled in some places. Those are the places that will have famine. These weather patterns are cyclical, Spain and Italy have been struggling with severe drought conditions for a couple of years now, so it wouldn't be a big surprise if Russia has problems this year. They had temperatures as high as 50 degrees Celsius in Rostov (another Zone 5 area) this past May.
Lets see if Gaijins claim of T-90 "Spall Liners" are true If its factually proven the T-90 does NOT have spall liners then it would just embarrass Gaijin because they refused to add Spall Liners to ANY US Tank or Vehicle because "there isnt proof of it" despite the fact the US invented it in the first place
Just how desensitized to death is the average Russian that they'll simply endure high loses of their youth? As you said, it's not just private military contractors or convict troops dying at this point. It's the high school kids getting captured and killed in high numbers at this point.
Look at how the Sovets and even the Soviet Ukrainians living in the cities reacted to the starving farmers of the Holodomor. They had children who were malnourished and starving with bones showing begging out front of relief distribution centres. The operator of one center was seen beating one of those children to death for begging there and then said they were starving for being anti-Soviet and that it was their fault in the first place.

No matter what he says his mother keeps repeating thaat theyre fighting for good against US and british forces.

@@avroarchitect1793 I don't think that is a good comparison. In their minds, those weren't their children, so why should they care? Also remember that living in a city was a privilege. This meant that a lot of the people living in Ukrainian cities weren't Ukrainian, they were Soviet.

The one overlooked aspect of these types of Ukrainian operations is the fact that they are conducted by experienced soldiers. This indicates that the survivability of Ukrainian soldiers is higher than the russian soldiers.
Basically all modern armies have been forced to accept - against all their instincts - that letting well trained, well equipped, well treated, well motivated soldiers do their job works better than forcing brutalised riff-raff into gunfire. Russia consistently refuses to learn this.

One of other advantage Ukraine potentially gains from this is that if they capture the area between Tyotino and Komarovka they will have a far more easily defensible position due to the river Seym. Given that neither side have been able to effect an opposed river crossing so far it is reasonable to suggest that Ukraine could just stick combats units there in less numbers than they would normally have put a regular position. They would also be able make use of less valuable units such as the TDF with maybe a few higher quality units as QRFs against any breakthroughs that do occur. All this is to say that Ukraine may if they pull this of might be able to once this offensive culminates pull away forces that they can use elsewhere bringing this campaign closer to being manpower neutral.

underrated
Oh, ohh no .. that is bad for Russia
@@jackthorton10 As the current American election points out, when the cost of your groceries doubles over a short period and the selection of favorite foods becomes less reliable, the populace tends to get a mite testy. Of course, the simple fact they were invaded is cause for legitimate concern.

Ukraine hasn’t managed squat except waste 10,000 of their best soldiers in Western equipment for absolutely no reason. General Syrskyi told Washington post a few days ago. It was supposed to take pressure off the parts of Ukraine that are falling day by day to Russia, but all it did was get a bunch of people killed without taking anything of importance or taking pressure off the troubled areas. The ability of Ukraine to waste monumental amounts of irreplaceable resources for negative gains is truly a amazing.

@@angelikaskoroszyn8495 That was satire.
Interesting

Wait! How come ONLY NOW I'm hearing about CESSNA DRONES??!?!?!?! THE HELL DID I MISS?!?!?!?!?
The same thing Russian air defense has?
1) during the Soviet, a german teenager flew a Cesna (152 or 172) to Red Square
2) at least one Cesna 172 converted to drone struck like 1000miles into Russia within the last few months.
I guess if at 100 ft and less than 70 knots, Russian radar filters the object out as a bird...
"UAZ Superslav Battle-Buses" is probably the most accurate name for that vehicle i have ever heard.
