  • Selling calves at the livestock auction is one of the main ways we get paid at Rolling Hills Farms and it's always a long, stressful day. Catching the right buyer in the right mood can make or break Dawn's farm income for the year. Come along and see how we did. #familyfarm, #cattlesale, #angusbeef, #angus, #womanfarmer,

Well Dave and Dawn, looks like you have done well.
A guy always wants more of course, but it could have gone the other direction. No one wants to see that.

We saw similar groups of calves go for much less. It’s always a gamble for sure.

Good morning. I checked the sale results on Thursday to see how you did, assuming yours were the only cattle from Esko. Fed prices have slipped a little lately but feeders are still doing good. It's nice to see some decent money for them.

We could have done better with the big steer but the calf prices were good.

Thanks Ed. Wonder why the price difference on your side of the mountains? Less winter grazing available?

@@Rollinghillsfarmsmn farther to the feedlots 🤔 I don't know.. but if we go east, the price goes up. Unfortunately, so does the hauling experience.. so it doesn't pencil out better enough..

We sold our heifers at Rock Creek on November 1st and they weighed 558 and brought 2.35 = $1311.30.

Nice price. I heard from others who hit that high too. We thought about selling back then but we didn’t get going soon enough with shots and weaning.

Larger markets that tap into large buyers like that get way better prices than around here. I noticed the distance, was that strategic or is that the closest?

We’ve consistently had better luck over there. There are two closer auction barns but Motley seems to be the place to take weaned, vaccinated Angus cross feeders. They really talk us up during the sale and get bidders going. Maybe we’re just being sold🤔.

Your calves brought a good price, right where it should be......Just out of curiousity, what did your cull cow bring per # ? I haven't figured out the hide color thing yet, seems that black and white steers bring big money...Thanks Dave.

Hey Brent. She was 1370lb and brought 74 cents. We could have made more grinding her into hamburger but there’s time and expense with that too.

@@Rollinghillsfarmsmnit's a catch 22.. we usually keep one cull for hamburger. Ship the rest.. but, if the freezer is full... And no one wants any..

A good friend said when he matched Angus calves for size they always brought more.
I remember farmers buying range steers. They weren't comfortable around people.
Thank you for the memories Dave.

We had nothing but trouble with wild Angus as a kid but crossing with Angus bulls the past 20 years has been a success. They seem more docile now. Maybe because we handle them more.

@Rollinghillsfarmsmn I've been alarmed by two bulls in my life. Same guy I mentioned owned both. Frank was gentle until the day he pushed me down, and took the alfalfa bale from me. I told it was alright because there were more bales, but that was bluster.
Speaking of buyers if you ever met Warren Meyer he was married to my cousin.

@@brycewiborg8095not familiar with Warren, but buyers seem to hang out in back of the auction in sort of a little group of friends, while the rest of us just try to keep up with the action.

Don’t forget the donuts !!!!!! and keep him engaged. That’s what really holds community together.
