I've heard a lot of great music in my 62 years but I have never been so obsessed with any other band as I am with BAND-MAID. They are truly special. 🤘✌
It's a song that feels like the culmination of 11 years of growth- personal, professional, and musically, for everyone in the band. The song started out being written muscially by Kanami, as usual - and she has said at the time, she was going through and dealing with the loss of someone close to her (I've heard a grandparent, but no confirmation). So she wrote a epic song thinking about - a persons full life, and all the different waves, experiences of one lifetime, etc. At the same time, Saiki wrote the lyrics for this - which this album she wrote quite a few songs, whereas in the past almost all the other songs were written by Miku. But Saiki was studying the history of story telling, and songs, and learned that so many cultures would ban them, or make them 'forbidden'. At the same time, using modern tools and research - we can find and recreate some of those now. And by doing so, we're reaching out to those in the past, that didn't have their voice (when the room was red, 'how dare you take that from us' lyrics), but then back to the color- we are letting them out, acknowledging them as humans and artists. (The visual of the shadow and human hand coming together at the end) But the OTHER part of this is, that last third of it, is how Saiki hopes someone 'hundreds of years' from now may find their music, and maybe it will help lift someone up when they need it. And she acknowledges that a big part of that, will be their fans carrying their music forward. (when she does the second 'let me hear your voice', and it's the sound of the crowd). Ultimately, Saiki brought her idea to Kanami's magnificent vision of a life's worth of experience in one song, and they created Forbidden Tale. It's just magical stuff. Great vid- love to see your honest reactions to a emotional piece.
In my opinion this song represents Band-Maids progression thru the years. They are spectacular. All aspects of the music. Incredible ladies. The whole package! Wait til you see them in person!
In an interview Saiki talked about the lyrics she wrote for this song. Short version. She was looking at music history, found songs and stories that had been forbidden but were now being recreated using new tech. Found inspiration from them and then wondered if long after she is gone if people will also be inspired by their music. Take the lyrics as being about connecting with someone from the past through their art and also connecting through your own art with someone in the future.
About 9.5 years ago I first heard "Thrill" when it was their only music video and they weren't on all the music streaming services. I knew from that first listen that they were something special. Since then, they've only gotten better. Not just a little bit better. A lot better. It took a while for me to admit to myself that Band-Maid had surpassed the Beatles as the best band I've ever heard, but they did exactly that several years ago. I've never been able to pick a favorite song from those the band has composed (much of their early material was written by other songwriters, but most from 2017 on is written by the band) because they're all great and hold a special place for me. That said, this is the song that finally made me pick a favorite. This song is flawless. The whole album is amazing and another song on the album, "The One" is a popular choice among the maidiacs, but for me, this is the perfect song. This is a musical journey that does more in four and a half minutes than most prog bands manage to do in their entire careers. I fully expect them to surpass it in the future, but for now this is my top song.
I haven't heard every band on the planet, but The Maids are the best, most complete group of musicians that I have ever experienced. This track is a M A S T E R W O R K. Thanks much, VS. The journey continues... 🕊
Forbidden Tale refers to stories and songs that were forbidden in the past, but which still survive to this day. Saiki was trying to write about that, and write a song with that kind of lasting impact, and imaging who might listen to this song in the future (I think that's what the shadow hands are meant to represent - a connection with someone in the future, perhaps long after the members of Band-Maid have passed on). Also, Kanami wrote the music around the time someone close to her died (I've heard a grandparent) and she had similar thoughts about life, and what we do with our lives, and composed the song to kind of represent different aspects of life, with the main guitar riff as the anchor or center holding everything together. (I'm summarizing what I remember but there's an interview where they both talk about how they approached this song.)
Epic song. With an epic story line. With an epic musical flow, with epic transitions, yet holding to a recurring theme. From an epic album, call "Epic Narratives". How much more epic can it be? How about an EPIC band...called Band-Maid! PO!🕊 🤘😆🤘
What a contrast, from Thrill to Forbidden Tale. Many of us think Band Maid leveled up with some of the songs on this new album. My personal fav from this album is The One. It makes me feel stuff.
The one is a masterpiece of a song, mikus heartfelt lyrics , mincho genius composition, saiki n miku sing beautifully with harmony n emotion, misa just killing it , akane too , its band maids wish you were here, rest in peace minchos grandma
The songs already released earlier in the year are just Band-Maid awesomesauce! The six new songs are so tightly integrated and complex, it's going to take a Tokyo minute to assimilate. But I already love Forbidden Tale, and especially The One. 😉🤘 btw - We should all wish a "Good Luck" to Band-Maid's new self-run management company: Maidit, Co., LTD! Will they managing other bands, boost Cluppo and Maiko projects, or tour more internationally? Or maybe they will expand their business interest to other sectors of the music biz outside of Band-Maid. I believe Kanami wants to get more into composing, scoring and production. And as for Miku and Saiki, the sky's the limit for what they'll want to do in merch, fashion and art, etc.. Thx, Mike!
That was Saiki, not Atsumi. 😀 never mind this. Last names being last names 😅 Lead vocal: Saiki Lead guitar: Kanami Backing vocal/ rhythm guitar: Miku Bass: MISA Drums: Akane Lead guitarist lost her grandmother during the time this was written, so the song is using this plus the story of Band Maid's importance in music going forward for future generations. How they will stand the test of time. *this is the lore within the BM community* at least 🕊🕊🕊
Everybody’s got full stage names but Misa. Atsumi, Kobato, Toono, Hirose. Not a big deal for people to use either. It is a little unusual for people to refer to Saiki as a beast, though, so I thought maybe it was a mix up.
I like that you were using Saiki-san's surname! :) Remember, sometimes, the Japanese people, and I even do it, use Surname first then First name. Atsumi Saiki, Tōno Kanami, Hirose Akane and Kobato Miku. MISA-san is the only one who doesn't use a surname. But her name is usually all caps.
from JAPAN. Thank you for your wonderful reaction to BAND-MAID. Most Japanese bands and musicians are technically high-level, but BAND-MAID is something special among them. They take their music seriously and do not slack off. Not only that, BAND-MAID is a very enjoyable live band. The MC time is particularly special - it's like being in a comic band. BAND-MAID played a lot of concerts in the USA last year and the year before, and there are a lot of fan cams that record the shows in full, so you can get an idea of the atmosphere. If you have time, give it a try.
They’re really a special band. We’re lucky to live in the time that they’re making music.

For a "that far back to now" live try "Real Existence-live" from 6 years ago and "Hate?-live" from 11/26/23.
