I have met 3 Iranian men in a Bar. I found out they were from Tehran. I told them I am an American. We became friends quickly. We both agreed that it's the Governments of both Iran and US that have a problem. People to People are definitely NOT the problem. I met with these guys everyday of their 1 week holiday. I definitely would go as a tourist to Iran.

These episodes on Iran are very good. Not only did Rick Steves show that this is a destination as attractive as any other, but he negotiated the sticky subjects of religion and politics with fairness, care and skill. I'm impressed.
I have worked with and studied with several Iranians, and the warm and curious attitude that Rick Steves talks about rings exactly true. Also their tepid enthusiasm for politics and religion. It does show that people are not their governments: governments may disagree, but people are largely the same.

I know, someone told me exactly the same about Iran , as you tell us now. And after his story, since then, I get soo anxious to visit it and especially get to go to the university. Suddenly , I want to understand more about it, which was not the case at all before. I totally understand the term freedom in a different way now. Before, I used to worship the value freedom as the highest good there is -MY personal FREEDOM. Now, I have my critical thoughts about this. Did I tell you, that until today I am still very grateful to my doctor of years ago, that seems to be an Iranian doctor who had helped me ? She is a good one.

As an outsider I have visited Iran during Shah's ruling and then after his departure. I know that almost all Iranian love the American people. I visited USA several times and I found that almost all the Americans are very very kind and friendly. The USA government does not represent the American people.I hope soon Iran and USA resolve their problems and become friends. Iran is a very beautiful country so as the USA.

dji zzah I think because of the previous president wanting to bomb America and Israel off the face of earth has a lot to do with our relationship. However, I love Iran and I don’t believe that all citizens of Iran feel as that president felt, and I dream of visiting one day!

    • @catherinesmith5793
      @catherinesmith5793 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@kelleymariejones6388 that's part of the thing, unlike America, there is a huuuge separation between the people and the government in Iran, the government doesn't nearly even come close to representing the people as the people have no say in the decisions that are made, whereas in America people have great influence over the government, and can do things like protests to raise attention in the media that the government is doing something they don't want. So I get the whole identifying Iran with the government thing but what we need to do is separate the government from the acc people if that makes sense.

I have nothing but love and admiration for Iran and it's people. For so long they have taken sanctions from the West (US), they are threatened by Israel, and yet they go on..
I often ask myself if the way they live is a bad thing. I feel that you could walk down the street there without feeling threatened by drunken youths, as is the case in my country.
I found it also interesting when Rick said they did not want their children growing up to be a Brittney Speirs, or Paris Hilton. The question goes begging; do we? In most cases the answer would be no. But this is the price we pay for living in a 'free' society, were we have lost most of our family values and the children have no respect for themselves or their parents.
I myself would not like to see Iran go Western. I feel the mixture they have now is just right.
The few young Iranian friends I have on Facebook seem to think the US is all Hollywood and glamour. I don't say anything because I don't want to spoil their illusion.
One of my young friends told me that they have no problem with the American people, it's the US Government they don't like. This I can understand when having the Geneva agreement signed some US Senators want more sanctions put in place.
    Iran has my heart.

As a result of watching the video, now i, too, in line with what is stated by others below, have a better understanding of the country and its people and a more balanced and open minded POV regarding Iran. Best of luck to us all during these challenging times. Hopefully, cool heads will prevail...rather than merely the self serving agendas of the "elites" involved in the "interested countries".

One minor correction on the topic of Christians not being able to work military and government, there is no official rule holding Christians, Jews and Zoroastrians. They can and are hired in many public sector jobs. But if position is considered sensitive or too high ranking, then you have practically no chance of going higher up.

Thank you Rick for your genuine report. Rarely are we treated to honesty backed up with believable images. As an Iranian I know how proud the people of I ran are when it comes down to the practice of hospitality, so much so that if it was an Olympic event, Iran would undoubtedly be a gold medal winner every year. That said, I know that the reader and you would agree with me that all people of every nation are generally good. I believe that your efforts along with those from like minded colleagues and other film makers do an enormous amount of good to clean up the disinformation levied towards decent citizens in the west by organisations with agendas driven by profit of one kind or another.Sadly the latter has far deeper pockets than the producers of your documentary and they know that people you have enlightened will soon fall victim to their constant barrage of advertised propaganda. The fact surely is, if honesty be the order of the day that it does not really matter who is good, bad or ugly. Decadence in the US and to a lesser extent Europe has meant hardship, for most of humanity. America is down a one way street economically with debts running into many trillions of dollars. World over, friends and foe alike are offloading US paper led by the Chinese who alone last year dumped over $500 Billion and that is a drop in the ocean of the amount of US paper they hold. It is this debt that drives the propaganda machine and most of the architects of this catastrophe are members of IPAC and/or bankers, and not forgetting the secret shareholders of the FED Reserve keen to go on sabre rattling, planning and executing the next red flag op so that US people can go to war with Iranian people. We, through good people like you could go on presenting undisputed facts until the cows come home but the question is going to remain, WHO ATE ALL THE PIES?

Sorry Rick this just won't do. Admitting that USA/England axis staged a coup-de-etat in 1953 and brought the Shah back does not go anywhere near explaining the true feelings and attitudes of Iranians towards USA. This coup destroyed Iran and her bourgeoning democracy at the very onset of democratic rule in Iran. Having been denied democracy in 1907 by the British when they defeated Satar Khan & Bagher Khan, the leaders of the constitutional democratic forces in Iran the post ww2 democracy in Iran was the first ever chance for our country to have a proper government rather than a despotic ruler. The government of Dr Muhhamad Mossadeq, which USA destroyed was a SOCIALIST government. It was not just about OIL. It was about Justice, health care ( a bit like Obama today), universal free education, industrial progress and independence. In one fail sweep you destroyed all peoples' aspirations and replaced it with a week, greedy, pliant, self obsessed ugly, NARCISSISTIC playboy who could not allow anyone else in Iran to gain fame or popularity for doing good. Iranians do not want to be westerners, they are far better than that. You said it yourself, do any parent WANTS their daughter to emulate Missus Spears, Hilton, Kardashian or any other half naked WHORE who are unable even to count the money they are making. I have nothing against professional prostitutes, it is these amateur whores who are destroying the chances of generations of young women to be anything other than copy whores. As for the levels of consumption, the relentless pressure to buy, every place you look or listen to or read is about how much better you will feel if you consumed more. I would rather see political insults on the billboards any day. Mr Steves, as an intellectual and a person who has influence over other people you owe it to yourself & your audience to educate yourself in the true history of the world in the last 200 years from people like John Pilger and Naom Chomsky & Gore Vidal etc and find out the real history of countries like Iran as opposed to the official, CIA version. Iranians showed you how kind and welcoming they are, so now you show them how truly interested YOU are in their plight. The true history of Persia in the past 200 years would make any honest seeker cry with frustration and shocked with disbelief. It is time you really found out.

+Federico Mazandarani I think you are minimizing what Rick is saying. I felt that he adequately explained the historical aspects as to why Iranians generally despise Americans, and he also touched on the emotional aspect as well. In fact, he references several times in the actual episode how frustrated Iranians must be to have their fate determined by the US. He sympathizes with them greatly. By no means does he gloss over the reality of the situation. Also, as an American who knew very little about Iran before watching this, I feel like I have a good understanding as to why Iran and the US have so much tension. Furthermore, I feel disgusted by the actions of my country and I truly sympathize with Iran. This proves to me that Rick covered all facets of the story very well.

+Mallory Gantner They dont generally despise Americans, not the hoi polloi in the street anyway. As I said in my post above, when I visited recently, everyone thought I was American because im caucasian perhaps and speak english, but im an aussie.Without exception people stopped me in the street, invited me for lunch and dinner, told me to tell everyone in my country they want to be our friends. Honestly I was overwhelmed and the aussie public dont treat foreigners nearly as well as the Iranians treated me. I travelled to the USA as well and didnt feel much warmth from the locals.

Mallory, from an Iranian: nicely said.
Unfortunately, both countries did terrible things to each other in the past, but most of the Iranians believe it's time to let bad things go away, I hope the same is with Americans.

You’d have to have a seriously blinkered worldview to not realise that a mural depicting the USA flag raining down bombs is entirely apt.
