As an ex RAF Halton apprentice who worked for twenty three years in the RAF, before moving into Civi street back in the 90;s just make sure you take a trade that is transferable to Civi street. Especially if you want to Stay in the forces for a good few years. In the long run transferable skills are of more use than any qualifications you may take
Get in and get a trade or skill, in the RAF, Army or Navy. Yes, it's great saying you're a Paratrooper/Marine or whatever at the dinner table, but it qualifies you for very little in civilian life.

Samw18 Hey! Give it a go, the RAF has so many roles available ranging from apprenticeship all the way through to engineering roles. With your college qualifications an engineering apprenticeship might suit you well.
Looks great, but that is a commissioned officer at Strike Command at High Wycombe. A vety pampered life, Mon-Fri 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. No deployments to the Falklands, etc, in this posting, you will not leave your office or you are the gopher for a senior officer . You go to an operational sqn expecting what you see in this video you are in for one very rude awakening, especially if you are an enlisted person on an Army Cooperation Sqn or s sqn that deploys a lot. I'm starting basic training in 2 months, then specialising as an aircraft weapons technician. At the moment I am working towards my fixed wing microlight licence. Will there be a chance of me getting discounted lessons with the RAF and if so should I just stop having lessons until I join up?

Nffc Football when it comes to being streamed either fast jets, multi engine or rotary wing, you do get to express a preference as to which one you’d like and if they can accommodate it they will try to. However ultimately the decision is based on service need and where the training slots are.

Yes you can! If you're not training for a pilot role you can still take flying lessons (at a discounted rate or paid for using learning credits) in order to obtain a licence.

Hi Robert! You don't have to shave your hair off at all! After training, it's down to personal preference. If you keep your hair long for religious reasons then this is absolutely allowed too. I vividly remember swearing my oath of allegiance at Norwich in 1980, our officer in command taking the oath comments were “ well gentlemen now is the moment you’ve all been waiting for, and i notice we have none of our coloured brethren here today how refreshing”!!! And also taking my Corporals examination when one question read… “Cpl Limpwrist has taken redundancy and is setting up a flower shop! If he buys 20 bunches of pink flowers 🌸 etc etc, its was always a bigoted establishment in many respects but the airframe technician job i loved, Hopefully times have changed!!! Hi, thank you for getting in touch! You would absolutely be welcome there! The RAF promotes diversity and equal opportunities for its staff. There are a number of eligibility checks at the beginning of the application process including citizenship (you must have British citizenship, Commonwealth citizenship or dual-nationality citizenship with the UK), medical tests and fitness tests. Race, religion and gender however do not affect your ability to apply so please don't let that put you off! The minimum service depends on your role but can be between 6 and 12 years. Also, you can be Discharged As Of Right (DAOR) if you have completed 28 days of paid duty and you have been in service for less than six months. We would recommend only accepting your place if you are sure that it's what you would like to do.
Hi Failing Student, you don't have to stay for 12yrs. It is a offer of employment, think of it as a comfort blanket of employment. Once you ha e completed your formal training you would have a 3yr return of service. But you will be loving it, trust me.

tommy brice probably best to speak to your local AFCO, but as long as they are a-level equivalent i should see why it would be a problem. If not you can always train as a AC but then enroll as an officer after training

Hi there i am 35 year old male worked as a HGV for the past 10 year unfortunlty recently divorced and looking for a new carrier class 1 licence and clean . Would logistics be for me would it give me any advantage having my experience? Or would applying for mover be more for me as like i say i was looking for a carrier change ie from driving.? Im only 14 but for the last year I've been pretty sure I want to join either the army or raf after university. No you don't! You can apply for a number of different roles in the RAF without a degree. You can find out which roles you can apply for by going to www.raf.mod.uk/recruitment/find-your-role and following and completing the quiz. There's only 4 questions to answer (full time or part time, your age, your qualifications and your interests) and then it shows you which roles are right for you. Hope that helps!

I joined as a Aerospace Systems Specialist. But Everyone during basic training has to go through something called IFPT (Initial Force Protection Training) it’s very demanding and takes up so much time of the course. But it’s so worth it, you then go and spend a week in the field also know as CPT. This is what you’ll be doing as a regiment gunner during your Phase 2 a lot I’m guessing, there were only 2 gunners on my intake but they seemed to be okay with the CPT and IFPT side of things, fitness is the main thing that dragged many people down during CPT, so make sure you are doing lots of cardio and circuits, this is what the Phys sessions are based on at Halton. Look at your AST results (I’m assuming you’ve done your AST?) don’t go for a trade that you think you can get higher in than others, go for a trade that you find interesting as this is what you’ll be doing day in and out for the rest of your career, and if you find it interesting, you will naturally excel throughout your career and achieve so much anyways. I guess the only tips you can get is, get incredibly fit, and just try your best. Just put 110% into everything you do and you’ll have an amazing career. I’ve only been in a short time and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.

ᎪNᏩELS CH⃟ᗩMβΣR αᏞᎥ I’m 18 too, did my A levels and joined up and haven’t looked back since. My trade in the RAF consists of counter terrorism, such as threats from Russia and all of them kind of threats. It also deals With the UK’s nuclear deterrent, so there’s loads to be doing with my trade, and is also good for once I leave, especially with it being counter terrorism. There is a very wide range of places you can find yourself with the Aerospace systems- you mentioned liking the gunner trade, my trade gets deployed onto ops and exercised a lot with the type of threats we deal with, so if you applied for Aerospace Systems you would be with the army and reg a lot. As far as I am aware, becoming a pilot is very very hard, someone mentioned to me at Halton that there is currently something like a 3 year wait to even be considered to becoming a pilot. WSops would also be a very good trade, there were 2 on my intake. You get a lot of being deployed with the WSops as you would expect with a trade like that. Flight ops deal with the planning of flights, Air traffic control and all of that stuff. Very office based, I believe. It all depends on if you want a ‘get your hands dirty’ kind of job or stay in an office?

And I only did GCSE ... I need to do my A Level .. and does it matter if you don’t have A level ... ??? And if you do .. which A level do you need??? And can you did your A level with the raf?

Hi there, the application process takes 6-12 months without COVID-19 delays, so you will be better off choosing something (job or course) to keep you going for that amount of time.
We hope your application doesn't get delayed too much longer! Definitely keep pursuing it but we would also recommend finding something to keep you going until then - you can always apply in a year's time once you're 18 :)

My honest advice is never sign up. Once you do, then you can never go back on life. It was the greatest but also the worse mistake of my life serving in the RAF. It is not as bad as the army or marines etc, but you lose your sanity, especially when they throw you out onto civvy street and having to adjust.
@@TapInYT It happens in all branches, we have vets homeless and on the streets, PTSD etc etc etc. The welfare charities do not help, unless you are a member. I served in the 90's and back then it was bad, but not as bad as it was years ago. We had no health and safety, I used to work with a lot of chemicals, my lungs are now on their last legs, a lot of people have launched legal battles as the chemicals we were using back then would not even be legal to use in civvy street. We had one gantry and literally had to hang off the planes just to do our job. Anything over six feet you are supposed to have proper scaffolding and measures in place. A bloke that I served with, he was bullied and this was before I got there, and he had tried hanging himself. Thankfully, he failed but bullying was part and parcel of the RAF back then, during basic people would be given regimental baths, and when you hear someone screaming and crying it is not a nice thing to hear. The list is endless really, but you can never become a civvie again, you are broken down to be made into an airmen, soldiers etc etc etc, and then built back up. You do get a lot of people leave the RAF and they adjust, but as the saying goes, you can take the man out of the forces, but you can never take the forces out of the man. We are supposed to be covered by the covenant, see Dr's before civvies etc etc. When I was close to being made homeless, I had letters from my local MP, he was the home office minster at the time, passed it on to the defence secretary to be told the covenant does not exist. However, I am going on a bit now, so I shall end it here lol

I'm starting basic training in 2 months, then specialising as an aircraft weapons technician. At the moment I am working towards my fixed wing microlight licence. Will there be a chance of me getting discounted lessons with the RAF and if so should I just stop having lessons until I join up?

Nffc Football when it comes to being streamed either fast jets, multi engine or rotary wing, you do get to express a preference as to which one you’d like and if they can accommodate it they will try to. However ultimately the decision is based on service need and where the training slots are.

Yes you can! If you're not training for a pilot role you can still take flying lessons (at a discounted rate or paid for using learning credits) in order to obtain a licence.

Hi Robert! You don't have to shave your hair off at all! After training, it's down to personal preference. If you keep your hair long for religious reasons then this is absolutely allowed too. I vividly remember swearing my oath of allegiance at Norwich in 1980, our officer in command taking the oath comments were “ well gentlemen now is the moment you’ve all been waiting for, and i notice we have none of our coloured brethren here today how refreshing”!!! And also taking my Corporals examination when one question read… “Cpl Limpwrist has taken redundancy and is setting up a flower shop! If he buys 20 bunches of pink flowers 🌸 etc etc, its was always a bigoted establishment in many respects but the airframe technician job i loved, Hopefully times have changed!!! But i suspect only marginally.

Hi, thank you for getting in touch! You would absolutely be welcome there! The RAF promotes diversity and equal opportunities for its staff. There are a number of eligibility checks at the beginning of the application process including citizenship (you must have British citizenship, Commonwealth citizenship or dual-nationality citizenship with the UK), medical tests and fitness tests. Race, religion and gender however do not affect your ability to apply so please don't let that put you off!
The minimum service depends on your role but can be between 6 and 12 years. Also, you can be Discharged As Of Right (DAOR) if you have completed 28 days of paid duty and you have been in service for less than six months. We would recommend only accepting your place if you are sure that it's what you would like to do.
Hi Failing Student, you don't have to stay for 12yrs. It is a offer of employment, think of it as a comfort blanket of employment. Once you ha e completed your formal training you would have a 3yr return of service. But you will be loving it, trust me.

tommy brice probably best to speak to your local AFCO, but as long as they are a-level equivalent i should see why it would be a problem. If not you can always train as a AC but then enroll as an officer after training

Hi there i am 35 year old male worked as a HGV for the past 10 year unfortunlty recently divorced and looking for a new carrier class 1 licence and clean . You can apply to be on RAF reserves. Which means you’ll be like a part-time soldier. Give you more flexibility to be in your kid’s life. Call the RAF through their website & speak to someone about your situation

Im only 14 but for the last year I've been pretty sure I want to join either the army or raf after university. No you don't! You can apply for a number of different roles in the RAF without a degree. You can find out which roles you can apply for by going to www.raf.mod.uk/recruitment/find-your-role and following and completing the quiz. There's only 4 questions to answer (full time or part time, your age, your qualifications and your interests) and then it shows you which roles are right for you. Hope that helps!

I joined as a Aerospace Systems Specialist. But Everyone during basic training has to go through something called IFPT (Initial Force Protection Training) it’s very demanding and takes up so much time of the course. But it’s so worth it, you then go and spend a week in the field also know as CPT. This is what you’ll be doing as a regiment gunner during your Phase 2 a lot I’m guessing, there were only 2 gunners on my intake but they seemed to be okay with the CPT and IFPT side of things, fitness is the main thing that dragged many people down during CPT, so make sure you are doing lots of cardio and circuits, this is what the Phys sessions are based on at Halton.
Look at your AST results (I’m assuming you’ve done your AST?) don’t go for a trade that you think you can get higher in than others, go for a trade that you find interesting as this is what you’ll be doing day in and out for the rest of your career, and if you find it interesting, you will naturally excel throughout your career and achieve so much anyways.
I guess the only tips you can get is, get incredibly fit, and just try your best.
Just put 110% into everything you do and you’ll have an amazing career. I’ve only been in a short time and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.

ᎪNᏩELS CH⃟ᗩMβΣR αᏞᎥ I’m 18 too, did my A levels and joined up and haven’t looked back since. My trade in the RAF consists of counter terrorism, such as threats from Russia and all of them kind of threats. It also deals With the UK’s nuclear deterrent, so there’s loads to be doing with my trade, and is also good for once I leave, especially with it being counter terrorism. There is a very wide range of places you can find yourself with the Aerospace systems- you mentioned liking the gunner trade, my trade gets deployed onto ops and exercised a lot with the type of threats we deal with, so if you applied for Aerospace Systems you would be with the army and reg a lot.
As far as I am aware, becoming a pilot is very very hard, someone mentioned to me at Halton that there is currently something like a 3 year wait to even be considered to becoming a pilot. WSops would also be a very good trade, there were 2 on my intake. You get a lot of being deployed with the WSops as you would expect with a trade like that. Flight ops deal with the planning of flights, Air traffic control and all of that stuff. Very office based, I believe.

I applied to join for the RAF back in may and I still haven't got a response yet I'm 17 so I'm obviously a bit Nervous due to the fact if I'm not in by september will I get in trouble as I need to do another of education if I'm not in by then
Hi there, the application process takes 6-12 months without COVID-19 delays, so you will be better off choosing something (job or course) to keep you going for that amount of time.
We hope your application doesn't get delayed too much longer! Definitely keep pursuing it but we would also recommend finding something to keep you going until then - you can always apply in a year's time once you're 18 :)

My honest advice is never sign up. Once you do, then you can never go back on life. It was the greatest but also the worse mistake of my life serving in the RAF. It is not as bad as the army or marines etc, but you lose your sanity, especially when they throw you out onto civvy street and having to adjust.
We're sorry to hear that you didn't have the best experience Mark - what in particular made you feel like you were losing your sanity?
@@TapInYT It happens in all branches, we have vets homeless and on the streets, PTSD etc etc etc. The welfare charities do not help, unless you are a member. I served in the 90's and back then it was bad, but not as bad as it was years ago. We had no health and safety, I used to work with a lot of chemicals, my lungs are now on their last legs, a lot of people have launched legal battles as the chemicals we were using back then would not even be legal to use in civvy street. We had one gantry and literally had to hang off the planes just to do our job. Anything over six feet you are supposed to have proper scaffolding and measures in place. A bloke that I served with, he was bullied and this was before I got there, and he had tried hanging himself. Thankfully, he failed but bullying was part and parcel of the RAF back then, during basic people would be given regimental baths, and when you hear someone screaming and crying it is not a nice thing to hear. The list is endless really, but you can never become a civvie again, you are broken down to be made into an airmen, soldiers etc etc etc, and then built back up. You do get a lot of people leave the RAF and they adjust, but as the saying goes, you can take the man out of the forces, but you can never take the forces out of the man. We are supposed to be covered by the covenant, see Dr's before civvies etc etc. When I was close to being made homeless, I had letters from my local MP, he was the home office minster at the time, passed it on to the defence secretary to be told the covenant does not exist. However, I am going on a bit now, so I shall end it here lol

Hi Sean! Unfortunately AST score requirements are kept confidential - the best advice that we can give is to make sure that you're making the best use of the available practice tests and online forums

@@seanjohn5236 no reason to know the ast scores, as you can't get the actual tests anyway, i have the passing sheet with them on, but without the test it's pontless.
Craig Mack how is it pointless when you can aim for that score, why do people need a running time? Why do people need anything if we go off by your writing,

Currently in my final year of school. I’m from within the Commonwealth (ZA) but really hoping to try enlist in the Royal Military Police (RAF or Navy). Just gotta do more research with the Commonwealth enlistment requirements ‘n such. This video is certainly motivating.

0:42 as an officer your uniform must be absolutely perfect and even in the wedge wood as we call it in the cadets must be ironed properly.
Well I can tell you the RAF is not as good as 30+ years ago or even 20 years !! I would not recommend to any youngsters today !

TapIn, I’ve very little experience from the officer side of things so if that’s how things are at high Wycombe then it’s very disconnected from the rest of the Air Force
