Im just about to do my a-levels and am an aspiring Pilot, ive kept coming back to this video for the past two years and i dont doubt this will be the last time. How is your career in the RAF going
Congratulations on your selection. I have applied to the RCAF for a pilot position. I passed my aptitude test, was one of only 2 or 3 people out of 20 from our aircrew selection test that qualified for pilot and have my first interview tomorrow morning. This video was a great help on getting prepared for that and working on answers to odd or difficult questions.
Tracey out his dish Dylan not sure what type of pilot yet. You won’t know until the end of phase 1 training to know what you’ll fly in the future. Visit your local recruiting office and apply online
Tracey out his dish Dylan you have to pass everything I mentioned before. Aircrew selection is insanely difficult. My CFASC was 20 people and the only people that passed were me and a woman who was already in the Australian Air Force. In your phase 1 training, you will be selected for your aircraft and only 22% get fast jet aka fighter pilot
Hi (sorry, unaware of your name), very informative video- good job and thanks. Hoping to join myself in the near future. I hope your basic training is going well and you are enjoying yourself (no doubt). Start of a very fulfilling journey! Myfanwy
This is video is very informative and gives a good insight into the process. it’s also admirable how you took the news about your height and just got on with things.
Just did my CBAT a couple days ago, if anyone was wondering the test is still basically the same as described in the video, my test lasted from 7am to 3:20pm however will change depending on how fast you answer questions. Remember that there are going to be others in the accom block with you who will have already done CBAT for various reasons, they will help you with any questions and will probably give you some hints and tips. 👍

harry kirby yeah I did a fair bit on the app personally I think it was an excellent help we’ll worth the few pounds it was. To be honest I don’t remember how many passed because I was was one of the first 4 or 5 to finish but I saw two others fail, but qualify for other roles so it wasn’t complete failiure.

Off to my P2 presentation tomorrow. Thanks for making this video! Really helped put my mind at rest about what to expect. Hope your new trade training works out.
Thanks for this video as someone who is just about to apply this is very informative. Would be great if you made some more of these as RAF vids are quite hard to come by.
37:35 The duty officer at my board literally said this exact thing. Verbatim he said, "if you're here, we have a space for you*. You just need to show us that you've got what we're looking for." At my board there were 8 of us split into two syndicates and 5 of us in total got through. A friend of mine who was boarded a month after me had 12 people and only 1 got through! *We did ponder that statement that evening. As you go into a sift after OASC you could potentially end up not being selected as you're binned off if you're not selected after 3 sifts. So in that case you passed OASC, but there very much wasn't a space for you lol.

This a very informative video and I appreciate it greatly. Just accepted my CBAT to go to Cranwell on the 12th of October. Do you have any advice on what to revise and how to do it? Like what sites did you use to get experience on the questions that could come up, it would be greatly appreciated. Hope your career is going well in the services
You want to be a pilot? By pass the RAF, go to the airlines and earn some serious dosh while flying heavy metal. There is a global shortage of commercial pilots. CTC at Bournemouth are a superb organisation that will help with the finance and also job placement when you have a frozen ATPL. Option is, 800 hours a year flying a large aircraft or 250 sitting in the back while someone else flies.
This video is great, I’ve been using it a lot for my prep. Can I ask, where did you find most of your research for your filter interview? Any particular websites you used?
Hey, just wanted to say, great video. A real insight into the application process. I, myself will be applying for Pilot (with RAF Police Officer as 2nd choice if things don't go well) in a few years as I have just started university. Sounds like I'll have to do the initial application process just after i start my final year of university. Anyways, hope things go well for you.
Hiya mate, this is a great video. Really helpful. Applying for pilot myself; sorry to hear about your medical issue. Wish you all the best in your future career!
Thanks for this video, I'm doing my filter interview next week at some point which is all recorded answers rather than in person now but I assume the questions are the same. Gonna need to reach hard to find examples of leadership as I haven't had much experience in all honesty. I was self employed previously so haven't had a "real" job, I wonder what kind of impact that'll have on my application
Do they choose if you go through based on A-levels and GSCEs? Like as in if you’ve got mostly 6s in your GCSEs you have a lower chance? Whereas if you have 8s its better. Also what is included in the aptitude tests?
lewmar321 I’ll be honest, I wasn’t mentally strong enough while going through the training. My advice to you is to just go for it, give it ya best and you won’t regret it
Best of luck pal, you seem like a great candidate. I am having a look myself at what kind of preparation I'll need to undertake to deal with each stage of the application, and I have gotten myself worried about showing examples of leadership in my life. How crucial did you find this point and any advice on what might qualify as leadership examples? I am also interested what your previous experience was prior to applying. Thanks in advance.
Any thing where you have led something really, I don’t know your life story so you’ll have to remember what you’ve done! Before I joined I worked in a pet shop haha
Thank you for this great video not many like this please make more as I am wanting to join the raf even tho I’m only going into year nine soon any advice how to get the best involved and into it 🙂🙂
Im still waiting on capitas medical review results, thats been almost 8 months, and the recruiting seargent says that CAPITA hasn't recieved anything from my GP, this is ridiculus waiting!
What is the "provisional" part of the offer that you received based on? Is this conditional to you completing PRTC? Could you explain in a bit more detail what testing occurs at PRTC? Thanks
Oliver Conway Provisional in the sense of, you have been accepted for the role as long as nothing changes that would affect your application. From what I can remember at PRTC it was basic maths and English assessments and then the fitness test.
Hi Sam, thanks for making this video it is really helpful. I'm applying as a pilot but I haven't finished my A-Levels yet. I was wondering what results you got and how important they were for you in the application process?. Obviously the RAF website states the educational requirements but I heard stories of people who got high As or A*s and were quickly accepted for officer roles.
ParallelWorld I would try to get the best grades you can of course, as long as you hit the required standard then that’s all that matters. It’s more your performance in the interviews, CBAT and OASC that’ll really count. For myself I got 10 GCSEs (8B’s and 2C’s) and achieved distinction triple star for my college BTEC. Hope this helps :)
With the medical, was it any different to the Capita medical? i.e. read the bottom lines for eyes. Sit in a booth and do the hearing test, or was there more thorough tests? Thanks
Hello, I hope you're well, how is your career in the raf going, I've seen that you are retraining as a Gen tech M. You're video is very very useful and thanks for the advice and help through the process. I've got 2 questions I was hoping you could answer: Were you allowed pen and paper in the CBAT at all. And how did you prepare for the bleep test as I have nailed the press ups and sit ups but struggling with the bleep test so any advice would be appreciated, thanks.
Hi Moaeez, it’s going great I’m enjoying it a lot. In the CBAT I can’t remember if they give you a pen and paper if I’m honest. I don’t think so though as it’s all on the computer and keyboard. With the bleep test, work on doing what’s called ‘negative split running’. Let’s say you run 3 miles, do the first mile at 9 min per mile pace, 2nd mile at 8:30 min per mile pace and 3rd mile at 8 min per mile pace. Or if you have a 400m running track near by or a large field, run a mile and a half (2400m) with every 100-200m being slightly quicker than your last. Basically keep speeding up rather than slowing down as you run. It’s hard but effective for the bleep test! Hope this helps!
@@fitzi2696 thank you very much for taking the time to answer the questions, very much appreciated. I will take your advice onboard and start training accordingly, thanks again!
Superb video. Well done. I hope you are enjoying your time in the RAF. Quick query, did you come across any older guys going through the recruitment process. I'm thinking about joining, but at my age I'm at the upper end of the age limit. Again, thanks and well done.
Sturrock Family There were a few people on my course at Halton who were around 30 years old. At Cranwell there were lots of older individuals going through officer training, some between 40 and 50. If you want to join, do it!
Hey, not sure if you would see this but I hope you do. First of all, thank you for this detailed video on how the entire recruitment process works. Just out of curiosity, what do you do now? I saw your pinned comment on how WSOP didn’t work out for you, did you switch your trade after that? Or did you decide to leave the RAF completely? I am actually planning on joining the RAF after university as I believe I need more life experience before I join the RAF, alongside university I am also planning on joining the University Air Squadron next year (doing a foundation year for the first year and they don’t allow that). The main role I was really considering was the role of being a pilot and my backups being either a Weapons Systems Operator or a Air Operations (Systems) Officer. Now I know how demanding the pilot role is and how competitive it is, it is probably likely that I won’t get it so I am really preparing to look at all my options. Anyways, I was just wondering, what was the case with wsop that it didn’t end up working out for you? Also, would you know how much officer training differs from NCO training? A response would be greatly appreciated. Once again thanks for making this video.
Are you allowed to bring in notes for the interview and can you bring a paper and pen into CBAT Test. Also what tips do you recommend a young person wanting to join the RAF as a pilot and what they should be doing now to maximise their success. Thanks for this great vid, hope your doing well.
No notes in the interview, you won’t need a pen and paper for the CBAT as everything will be provided for you. I would speak to the careers office and they can put you in contact with people who would be useful in your preparation. Get in the habit of exercising regularly as it’ll be easier for you when you do the fitness tests. Practise lots of speed distance time calculations and look online for the CBAT tests, there are apps that will help with CBAT preparation aswell. Hope this helps!!
This is great. I'm putting my application in once I am certain I can smash my press ups. Currently training 4 times a week, I think I will have my app in by the end of the month.
When you found out you were too tall for pilot, did they let you change role choice there and then? Had you put down other roles on your initial application, or just pilot? I'm asking because if I get to OASC and I'm not eligible for pilot, I'm wondering if I can change to RPAS pilot while I'm there (and not have to start an application all the way from the beginning again). Cheers!
Ramautso When they told me I was too tall I was offered other roles to put down as my first choice, and carry on with the process but for the new first choice. I had put a second and third choice down when I initially applied anyway.
Fitzi Awesome mate, well I’m just hoping that if I don’t (for whatever reason) achieve pilot standards they’ll let me change to RPAS pilot, even though I’ve not put it down as a choice. I did achieve CBAT score for it though.
Did you have to do a pre fitness test as well as another fitness test at the OASC ? It says on the RAF website that the candidate need to run 2.4km and do the multi stage fitness test ?
Hi there, when I’m a couple of years older and have got a degree my dream would be to join the raf as a pilot, the one question I have, is that when/if you get accepted in do you get to choose whether you get to fly the fast engines jets or helicopters, and if not how would you go about trying to fly the one you were most interested in.
Nffc Football From my understanding you are streamed depending on service needs. So you may not end up on the type of aircraft you’d ideally like. I think it all depends on you’re flying ability when going through the training aswell. Some people can’t quite hit the standard for flying fast jets, some people can. It depends on what ability you naturally have and develop over the training period. Just go for it and see what happens!
Update: Halton was a great experience, made lots of friends and enjoyed my time there.. well.. most of it! Unfortunately WSOp didn’t work out in the end and I’m re-trading to GenTech M. Thank you for all the comments, I will continue to answer them as they come along :D

I'm applying for the Intelligence Analyst (Linguist), I so hope to god it works out, seen so many people get messed around by Capita !
ALAW how did it go?. I applied on Wednesday ,roughly how long does it take to get a reply back?
@@DeepF1ASH How long did it take lol?
@@ciarenbunt306 bloody ages mate, about 6 months
Hiya mate, this is a great video. Really helpful. Applying for pilot myself; sorry to hear about your medical issue. Wish you all the best in your future career!
Lee Gallagher Thanks Lee! I hope your application goes well!
Great video!!
Great video of the application process, just arrived at st athan 2 weeks ago. Gen tech e training for next 16 months 😅
Joe Giles Cheers! I’m on the senior Mech course so will see you about
Do they choose if you go through based on A-levels and GSCEs? Like as in if you’ve got mostly 6s in your GCSEs you have a lower chance? Whereas if you have 8s its better. Also what is included in the aptitude tests?
Wow Sir! Cracking video, thanks for the detailed info! You've helped my prep a lot!
If you don’t mind me asking, how come WSOp didn’t work out? It looks very difficult to get into which is worrying me slightly
lewmar321 I’ll be honest, I wasn’t mentally strong enough while going through the training. My advice to you is to just go for it, give it ya best and you won’t regret it
How hard is OASC? I’m not great speaking Infront of people and I was just wondering if anyone else has this problem and still found it doable
Thanks for the rapid response Fitzi!
I am a kid, and my dream job is a fighter pilot,do you or anyone have any advice?
Join the air cadets
Thank you for this great video not many like this please make more as I am wanting to join the raf even tho I’m only going into year nine soon any advice how to get the best involved and into it 🙂🙂
Hi mate, I've done loads of arithmetic, speed distance time, and others, but how to practice angles and bearings?
thanks
JBMP get a GCSE revision book
Just done my prtc, and got my offer of service interview, any tips for that? Or is it literally about the knowledge of the trade your applying for?
Im still waiting on capitas medical review results, thats been almost 8 months, and the recruiting seargent says that CAPITA hasn't recieved anything from my GP, this is ridiculus waiting!
Hi what is the maximum age for being a pilot in Royal Air Force? What features should we have?
Are the tests all about maths and science or are there more?
I think a guy I know is at Halton same time as you he’s doing WSOp too... Good luck! Keep us updated how it’s going
How long did you have to wait to hear about the PRTC after the PJFT, it's the last step to BRTC, btw im joining up as an ASOp
I'm 31 and considering the RAF as a career change. Anyone else in the same position?
29 and also having the same considerations, you're not alone!
30 here been working as a techy in the mobile industry. No family, Single, and looking for purpose in a life that doesn't have one so far.
I'm 29 and have applied for the position of pilot in the Royal Navy as I noticed the max age increase to 34!
31 years of age, I hope to be photographer in the RAF. need to get of the beer loose the belly, get fit and get out there into the world.
32 and thinking of joining, I'm very fit always been but worked dead end jobs till now
What is the "provisional" part of the offer that you received based on? Is this conditional to you completing PRTC?
Could you explain in a bit more detail what testing occurs at PRTC? Thanks
Oliver Conway Provisional in the sense of, you have been accepted for the role as long as nothing changes that would affect your application. From what I can remember at PRTC it was basic maths and English assessments and then the fitness test.
@@fitzi2696 Thanks for the quick reply, appreciate it!
What type of questions where on the CBAT, Im applying for ATC and don't really have and idea of what the aptitude test will be about
If you look up RAF aptitude tests on google there is plenty of resources that take you through what sort of tests will be included :)
Is the RAF the same as the AAC if not what are the differences?
I would appreciate a reply.
You can always get your commercial license in the civvy world ……if you really want to do that later !
Thanks
ryan westerman The capita medical was a general medical whereas the medical at OASC is the more in depth aircrew specific one.
In my opinion, I think passing the aptitude test can be a bit challenging, hopefully when I apply for being a pilot I will pass it
how'd it go?
Hello, I hope you're well, how is your career in the raf going, I've seen that you are retraining as a Gen tech M. You're video is very very useful and thanks for the advice and help through the process. I've got 2 questions I was hoping you could answer:
Were you allowed pen and paper in the CBAT at all.
I've got my P2 pres in the morning, should I wear a suit for it do you think?
Hugo Yes
Superb video. Well done. I hope you are enjoying your time in the RAF.
Quick query, did you come across any older guys going through the recruitment process.
I'm thinking about joining, but at my age I'm at the upper end of the age limit.
Again, thanks and well done.
Sturrock Family There were a few people on my course at Halton who were around 30 years old.
At Cranwell there were lots of older individuals going through officer training, some between 40 and 50.
If you want to join, do it!
Just watched your video, (it was great by the way) but I'm going for my CBAT in a month, so what is the best advice you could give me. Thanks.
m.j bain how did your CBAT go mate?
Hey can I get your Instagram account handle?
Hope this helps!!
do you have some links to maths revision and or nearings/ angle? please kindest regards mickT
what wouldve you done before to prepare before you entered your interest and went into the training
At OASC do you need the actual certificates for your GCSEs? I never got posted my certificates just a letter stating my grades.
Dan L Best ask your AFCO that one. I’m not sure if I’m honest!
Fitzi thanks!
Do you need a degree to become a fighter pilot?
Can I apply to be a pilot straight after finishing 6th form?
Weezy No you don’t need a degree. Yes you can apply straight after 6th form / college
Do you need to have been in the air cadets to become a fighter pilots, I too have just finished 6th form.
Dxmore nah
Weezy you joined mate?
This is great. I'm putting my application in once I am certain I can smash my press ups. Currently training 4 times a week, I think I will have my app in by the end of the month.
Tara Chesworth Keep it up!
I literally came back from CBAT today and god was it the hardest thing I have ever done and im 29 haha. But luckily I passed :)
Once your in the Air Force, you'll have far more good times
than bad. When you'll look back in years to come you'll be glad
you did. Stick with it.
Im your 200th subb :)

Did you have to do a pre fitness test as well as another fitness test at the OASC ? It says on the RAF website that the candidate need to run 2.4km and do the multi stage fitness test ?
I didn’t when I joined up, it may have changed now.
Great video 👍
Is eyesight a big issue, and if it is how good does it have to be?
For aircrew roles eyesight is taken into account and will be tested. You’d have to ask the careers office for the standard as I’m not sure.
To be a RAF pilot do you have to have any former experience with flying?
Louise Harvey No
Louise Harvey no they teach you everything there, but if you have some knowledge or experience it will help for sure
