    For P5’s themes, I think it’s the epitome of Persona’s repeated idea that while you might like the idea of the one big bad being the cause of the world’s problems, it’s actually billions of ordinary people like you adding up to sustain the problem. In 5, people wanted the freedom to not think, stand up for themselves and let some greater power do the work (either the Thieves or Yaldaboath). That concept leads into systems of power like democracy and how they can be corrupted. The Phansite’s ranking for the next target was effectively a rigged election.

    • @willadkins1354
      @willadkins1354 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      The subway trains are a reoccurring motif of the masses submitting its will to authority.

    • @willadkins1354
      @willadkins1354 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Also, the idea of using magic powers to solve people’s problems gets handled better with Maruki’s introduction in Royal, in my opinion. It goes back into submitting your will to another.

    • @knightshade2654
      @knightshade2654 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      That's a major theme is at least the nusona games. The endgame of Personas are pretty depressing with how you realize that the bosses are right in humanity overwhelming apathy, whether it be longing for our inevitable deaths, a desire to live in a blissful ignorance, or seeking to give up all responsibilities and freedoms to authority.

    • @onewingedren2228

      Also Shido election is very realistic too

    • @victorhugocosta1127
      @victorhugocosta1127 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I never bothered with the final god boss, because I always thought the execution of the whole thing was so good (except for maybe Yaldabaoth's characterization). The people refusing to accept Shido's wrongdoings, coupled with the PT's existence being connected to their public notoriety was so good as a plotpoint and felt like a natural progression from Shido's arc.

    This is pretty crazy to think that Persona 5 is already 5 years old. I too got in to Persona in 2012 by watching a let's play of Persona 4 on whim and getting really in to it. After watching that let's play I went on to playthrough Persona 3 and 4 multiple times, and once I got my teeth in to Persona 5, I again fell in love all over again.

    I can understand not really enjoying them, but they do build each person's character a lot. Then again, I'm prone to overanalyzing everything in my character analyses lol.
    It's always weird how a lot of the game's themes are lost in translation from East to West culturally, yet at the same time it's awesome to see the story and characters resonate with such a global audience.
    Always great to hear other people's thoughts on these games!

    11:29 One thing you CAN do, is introduce someone to the game. I actually have my uncle hooked on P5R. He drops by every few months, and we work through the story. I even started him on a New Game+ save, with a 100% Compendium and all of Jose's stamps. That way, he can see all of the story beats with minimal scheduling headaches.
    There are a few spots where I'll put my foot down (avoiding bad endings, advancing critical confidants), but other than that, he directs, I drive.

    The main reason for me at least that I can see why people judge products based on the fanbase is because if you love it, but lack people in your own social circle to talk about it, you turn to the internet. So when you see the general fanbase as something you clash with, you'd have no real place to talk about the product you might super enjoy.
    It happens to me a lot when I pick up something but missed that hype train so there's no conversation going on at all and my friends wouldn't be into it. Or I try to throw myself into something popular, but struggle to find decent conversations about it, or even feel shame for liking it because the fanbase has made nonfans weary of anyone into said thing. I really miss back in the day when you could go to recess and always find a group of kids who also watched whatever you wanted to talk about the day before and trying to find the weird obscure thing to impress them.

    6:02 I genuinely don’t get how people consider P3-P5 to be way different interms if tone (Especially P3 and P4) each game has its dark moments but still feels lighthearted despite it dark moments

    • @paulg.4812
      @paulg.4812 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I think that's more of both sharing general anime tropes. I'd say overall, P4 is a lighthearted game with darker elements thrown in while P3 is a darker game with lighthearted elements thrown in. Part of the problem is finding the right words for it, since I feel like dark portrays something that's bleak and gritty, which isn't a good fit for P3. Best I can think of is P3 is more serious while P4 is goofy, but it feels like that's doing a disservice towards P4.
      I'll also add, I think both are good games and I appreciate the fact that they are different and think it was very much intentional. I'd say P5 leans more towards P3 in terms of tone, but is still pretty different overall.

    • @knightshade2654
      @knightshade2654 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As someone who began with P4, it was very light-hearted, and this was more obvious when I played P5 and my early game in P3. This isn't a knock on P4 by any means; it is currently my favorite and balanced emotional moments, as well.

    • @starmaker75
      @starmaker75 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Persona 4 can still be realistic dark. I mean the killer I think is probably the most realistic villain in the persona series.

    • @ooofthedegenerate
      @ooofthedegenerate 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@paulg.4812 To me tonally P4 and P3 felt like I was playing the exact same game. Especially sense my preferences for P3 routes is Femc but even the MC isn’t really that dark. Like you have death but just death isn’t enough to be dark. Hell I would say for me adachi’s dungeon and everything that is going around in inaba at that time felt darker to me then literally any moment in P3 and P5. P3 other then the MC tracks the game felt like a lighthearted and hopeful for all of it run time. I think another thing that really plays into this is P3’s theming. While I think the creators did intend for the themes to be about accepting the reality that your gonna die. While I was playing through the game I never felt like other then Aigis and the death monologue the game was really trying to go for this theme. With everything that happens to the characters and SEES’s resolve to stop Nyx the theme felt like keeping hope in dire times. I’m really not tryna come off the wrong way but I feel like P3 is a game the try’s to give off the atheistic of being dark but can never really commit to the darker tone. Which I think is fine but i don’t think that makes a game dark.

    • @ooofthedegenerate
      @ooofthedegenerate 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@starmaker75 I strongly agree with you. To me I feel like the reason Vanilla P4 felt like the darkest entire in the series was because of Inaba and the ending. To me everything felt a lot more idk Closer and grounded. All of P3’s main villains have this grand scheme Ryoji is a god. Strega was the world to end it feels so idk unemotional. Mean P4 you have a neet gamer who just wants attention a guy who I feel like as reasonably as one can has a messiah complex and an Incell all of these things in one way or another exist in our reality.

    4:28 I've actually seen heated arguments over this on the Persona subreddit.
    There's apparently a sliver of P1 and P2 die hard fans who insist that they could get rid of social links, social stats, and all the time management aspects of the game and the series would be just as popular.

    • @Mageman17
      @Mageman17 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I’ve given it some thought as well. At this point, they should NOT remove the social links and the time management aspects. The mainstream managed to latch onto Persona with those features as a selling point and it would be a disservice to go back to the P1, P2 narrative style.
      The traditional style should be revisited in offshoot spin-offs. I think we are at a point where the majority of the fans wouldn’t mind if Altus followed up a numbered entry with a non-numbered traditional entry. I think it’s only the vocal minority and people of a certain lifestyle who will screech about not being able to socialize the waifus.

  • @knightshade2654
    @knightshade2654 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    1:08:20 What I find awkward is how this way of thinking is heavily condemned by the Persona games, for the final boss always rants about how the general public is apathetic, vain, slothful.
    What scares me is how the party can never respond beyond “but some people have passion!” However, the game does end on a high-note by saying that it’s up to you to make the world a better place.

    • @papapalps2415
      @papapalps2415 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thats probably because, one; the characters aren't exactly what I or anybody else would term as particularly good debaters, which is fair enough even if they ARE considering the contexts, and two; there really ISN'T that good of a response to those sorts of criticisms. Humans in general, as a very general rule for us as a race, are lazy, or slothful, or whatever term you want to use. And we also are very often apathetic to most things outside of our immediate surroundings, and we can be vain. Fuck, many of these things are likely biologically hard wired in, and are a big psychological/social force, too.
      So of course you can't really dispute the rule. Its pointless. Bringing up exceptions doesn't really change the facts at hand.
      But, on the other hand, its far (read; infinitely) more complicated then just 'humans....bad...' like the antagonists think (or, alternatively, the countless many misanthropes you can find loitering around on the Internet if you look hard enough). Us being flawed is hardly grounds to exterminate/enslave/whatever ever man, woman and child, either. The negative traits exist, and are a big factor, perhaps even the dominant ones. But they hardly magically override the positive ones, either.

I consider him to be a very immoral character, but his self-hatred of being a bastard, overwhelming desire to be loved, absolutely amazing design as Prince, heroic and understandable sacrifice, and underrated inner conflict in the third semester made him an amazing character for me. I'm curious; where, exactly, does the game try so very hard to paint Goro Fucking Akechi as a 'misguided goodguy', pray tell? This is such a bizarrely common criticism of P5 that has been around for years by now, and yet, I don't think I have ever once seen ANYBODY who peddles it back it up with anything past subjective interpretations and the ocassional pointing towards Akechi being 'forgiven' by the cast towards his death (or, well, 'death'). Neither is...exactly terribly compelling, suffice to say. If what the cast did there looks like forgiveness to you or anybody else, then I don't really know what else to say, other than to wonder what you think outright rejection or hatred is supposed to look like.
      I suppose I can be nice and concede that Akechi, in a grand, overall sense by the narrative itself, probably isn't presented as poorly as he should be morality wise, but then, that seems to be a bizarrely common thing in Japanese media in general I have noticed over the years. I've got no fucking clue as to why this sort of phenomenon exists, and I don't even know how to begin phrasing it nevermind a proper word for it, nor am giving an excuse or throwing a 'but what about?'-ism, either. I'm definitely have less issues with it though, because I do like yadly and didn't find the stuff that they were doing with akechi to be that confusing. One thing I can honestly agree with: the big bad gods can probably stop at this point, especially after p5s, p4au, etc. But yeah, I can say that P5 is great, but it does suck knowing that the fans (especially with p5 popularity) has tainted this game for so many people.

If anything, I feel like this tradition should've been broken to a degree in P4 since Izanami doesn't seem to have much reason to actually wanna fight you after you've gone through the effort to not only stop her plan but continue seeking out answers to the end, like she seems to have wanted.

    I feel like posting a shitty fanfic in the guise of armchair rewriting.
    How I'd "fix" Akechi: I'd split him into two different characters, one being Law Akechi - the character we saw at the start of the game until the betrayal, exactly as he appeared to be aside from the attempted murder of Joker. The other character would be the asshole who has been running around in the black mask, who we'll call Chaos Akechi. I would make Law Akechi stay Shido's bastard child but have turned out well (morally) despite that. Law Akechi would not work for Shido in any capacity, would not know that Shido is his dad, and would just honestly be trying to do what was right - letting the system handle the bad guys instead of having these self-styled vigilantes run around messing with people's heads in ways no one understands. Law Akechi would initially believe that the Phantom Thieves did accidentally kill Haru's dad.
    Chaos Akechi would be Law Akechi's twin sister, publicly acknowledged as Shido's offspring, and in the process of being groomed to be Shido's successor. For the sake of this character, I'd change Shido to already be the PM of Japan and all of Chaos Akechi's palace activity would be about enhancing Shido's current power both within his party and in the political arena more generally. Chaos Akechi would not hate Shido, but would be a megalomaniacal narcissistic sociopath because of being raised under Shido's influence. Shido would make appearances throughout the game helping Chaos Akechi campaign for her first seat in the Diet. The game would build to Shido being the apparent final boss a week before the election date (which would also be pivotal to Shido as some kind of a final consolidation of power), but when the player reaches Shido, Chaos Akechi assassinates him in a cutscene causing Shido's palace to fall apart. Chaos Akechi would reveal her motive to the Phantom Thieves, indicate that she somehow has the immediate successor to her father wrapped around her finger, and taunt the phantom thieves (in a way that makes it clear what her palace would be) before running off. Chaos Akechi would then have a palace with a week long deadline. Her motivation would have been to become Japan's Shadow Prime Minister - an apparently minor politician who has dirt on virtually everyone that makes decisions and can expose or kill them at any time. Inheriting all her father's assets, being shot into the national spotlight following his death, and receiving a sympathy bump in the election would all be added benefits. I'd make her palace to be a ninja fortress or something along those lines.
    Aging both Akechis up a little (to their early 20's) seems like it might be necessary to make this story work. I'd make the reason why the twins were separated be that Shido saw having a cute daughter to be advantageous to his political career and having her follow in his footsteps (as a notably female politician) to be a way to firmly entrench his legacy in Japanese politics, but thought that a boy could cause him only media scandals and make him waste political capital trying to cover for any misconduct he might do (Shido has enough personal misconduct to worry about without adding to it). Also, I guess I'd have Shido not seeing Chaos Akechi's betrayal coming and being shocked about it as an "et tu, Brute" moment, he'd be hurt but accept his death with some dignity. As to Law Akechi, I guess I'd have him somehow realize the truth about what happened to Haru's dad and rejoin the team because he'd see that there would be no way for the system to account for Chaos Akechi's crimes, knowing what she did would destroy everybody's faith in the political system as a whole.
    There's also the idea of just making the phantom thieves having actually accidentally killed Haru's dad and having there be no shadow assassin, but I can see why the developers don't want that.
    Edit: As an addendum, I also had the idea of having Chaos Akechi be from an opposing political party but to have Shido campaigning for her nonetheless as what looks to the public to be a "I don't agree with you, but your heart's in the right place and I trust you to represent your constituents well" thing, pushing the public to a post-partisan era. In reality, Shido would be trying to build an era where politicians truly loyal to his agenda occasionally mount fake opposition masked to the public with amicability. In other words, some of Shido's pawns would appear to be from different parties but would have good relationships with him in kayfabe to justify them doing his bidding and may have public feuds with Shido but only regarding subjects that are truly irrelevant to his agenda. If any apparent deals are cut it would involve Shido making meaningless concessions to them in exchange for getting what he wants. I don't know where I got any of these ideas, I'm just a very creative person, I guess.

    I'm honestly kind of confused by their confusion with Akechi. It is like they need Akechi to represent some kind of philosophically dialectic thing in the story ... when he was just a secret it villain and it was just as simple as that. Sadistic Akechi was the real Akechi and he was playing a part until that point. You do not need the extra ROYAL content for that to be clear. For the purposes of Yalgabalth's game, Akechi was still fighting on the side of Lawful Evil, even though he had the more Neutral Evil goal of revenge against his Shido, his actions were still propping up Shido's cabal thus feeding the concept that humanity wanted to be controlled

    Regarding the sentiment that P5’s themes were undercut by “solving characters’ problems with magic,” I think a large part of that comes from the expectations set by previous entries.
    In P3 and P4, the magic was an abstraction of inner strength and identity, but was separated to an extent from the characters’ more mundane problems. Magic was used to solve problems caused by magic, but personal problems were solved “the hard way,” with introspection and growth.
    As a result, some came to see that as a part of the identity of the series, and so expected P5 to follow that precedent. This lead to being disappointed when it didn’t, as instead of feeling like a shift in focus, it felt like the characters got an “easy out,” to an extent.

  • @PathBeyondTheDark
    @PathBeyondTheDark 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Royal saved P5 from a narrative standpoint for me. The original lacked a point where you could truly become invested emotionally and philosophically like you could when faced with Maruki's viewpoint and the tug of war with what the proper course of action is. But it had the potential with Akechi's opposing viewpoint, that being maintaining order first yet still striving toward a better tomorrow, only for it to turn him into the Persona mandated traitor and the genericism it entails leaving us with no personification of what Akechi originally stood for. Maruki's approach is different from both, but unlike Akechi the narrative commits to his and does not necessarily leave the player with a definitive answer. Admitedly Akechi's true outlook on justice is better represented in Royal, but it still lacks the gray tone that comes with the PT's versus Maruki's ideologies.
