In this video I am talking about the Yamaha Revstar RSS02T Standard.
I've loved Revstars from afar for quite a few years, but only got to really experience them properly 2 years ago at 42 Gear Street. I made a few videos with my buddy @RichWordsMusic where he showed me everything the Revstar range has to offer and we looked at every model in detail. This really pushed my desire to own this guitar to the limit.
Fast forward 2 years and I finally have one! The RSS02T Revstar Standard. This is a dual P90 guitar with a 5 way switch and a focus switch to make the P90s sound a little closer to humbuckers. This for me is a guitar that shares elements of all of my favourite guitars and since I got it, I haven't put it down!
In the video I have got the Yamaha Revstar plugged into the Blackstar Studio 10 6L6, the amp is running clean via the Two Notes Torpedo Captor X. The overdrive in the video is coming from the Analogman King of Tone.

In 57 years of playing my Revstar is my favorite. Same one as yours just the two tone color.
I love my Revstar. I’ve pretty much added and taken away something on all my guitars but felt no need to do anything at all to my Revstar. Speaks volumes doesn’t it. Awesome instrument buddy. Great video 👌🫵
You have the Humbucker standard don't you? I agree, they just have them so dialled in. The pickups that Yamaha are making for them are voiced perfectly to fit the guitar.
Best Revstar review I’ve seen. Thanks
Just came across your page. Fantastic playing and you really showcased its diverse tones. I have the same model in black and can’t put it down as well. I love to run high gain settings or fuzz pedals with the focus engaged, very full, creamy, and nasty. This guitar is a Swiss Army knife for tones and like you demonstrated is great for different genres. Keep up the great work 🍻
Such a phenomenal guitar. I have that exact same one and I cannot get enough. It has quickly become my number 1 ahead of Botha Gibsons and 2 American Fenders
Great playing!
I have one of the first generation Revstars, an RS502 I think it is with a matt black finish, industrial looking P90's. A rock machine! 😎
Ohhhh, those old silver P90s they used to use? I loved the look of those ones! The matt black ones looked amazing
I too have the billet green version!
The silver ones were wound hotter than the cream ones. Fun (to me) fact.
Got the same model early last year, but mine is in the sunset burst. They are beautifully designed and constructed guitars and just a whole lot of fun to play. Second or fourth position are probably my faves. The most resonant electric I have.
Yeah I agree with you full, they are FUN to play. I really enjoy picking this guitar up and it always feels great to play. I use it for touring a lot and I spent most of my time going between position 4 and 2 for most things too. The bridge P90 sounds great with some stacked overdrives too.
Great Review.👌
I totally agree with some of the Revstar owners here. Bought one myself (Standard humbucker), the neck and fingerboard are so smooth, the 5-way switch combined with the pull-knob gives you so many clean sounds. By now my favourite, before Gibson LP and Fender US Strat.
The necks are fantastic. Probably one of my favourite necks on a modern guitar. I like that they kept it somewhat classic feeling by making it a little fatter, but still keeping that smooth playing feel. I tour with this guitar all the time and it's become one of my most reliable and versatile guitars.
Do you think humbucker will be better than p90s?
I have two Revstars, my first one was the RS420 which I love, but have recently acquired the RSS02T like yours with the P90s, and it's amazing.
I have the Standard P90 and humbucker models. I love them.
Awesome! My Revstar is one of my main touring guitars, it’s so reliable
I have a revstar I got a few years ago the old model right before the new models came out. I liked it so much I wound up ordering the p90 model because I played a beat up used one in a guitar store and it sounded so good. It was the merlot, I ordered the blue one. I’d take one of every color if I could afford it lol.
They made some killer colours. One of my other favourites was the Professional model in the Gold. I tried both the HB and P90 versions in another video I made a few years ago and I came to the conclusion that the P90 version was a little more versatile, but also felt and sounded better to how I play.
Just got this guitar, rss02t. It’s bests my PRs Paul’s guitar and my Gibson classic. Thanks Yamaha.
That's a great review right there!! I love the Revstar, it's become a bit of a favourite for me, I don't do many gigs without it anymore!
I tend to agree - I got mine and it's on par with my PRS S2 McCarty, E-II Horizon and Gibson Standard. The only complaints was there is a ding in the top (under the clear coat so you can't feel it) and the frets were a bit scratchy. But once they were polished up the overall feel of the guitar is perfect. It plays SO DAMN WELL.
I just got swift blue p90s and wow!¡ Its such a unique guitar
Fender and gibson hybrid. Mainly fender-ish tones so i love it.
I was torn between this Hot Merlot finish and the Swift Blue... I ALMOST went blue but came back to Merlot at the lat moment. They're great guitars. In position 2 is sounds quite Strat-ish live. I find I can get good humbucker style tones on the bridge P90 with the Focus switch pulled on too, that fattens it up!
I got the same one Love the tonal variation but the hum is too strong! Any suggestion how can i eliminate the hum? Thanks!
Where can I purchase the backing track to you Intro Jam?
The Revstar looks and sounds great with your tasteful guitar playing.
Looks and sounds great!
It's a killer guitar!
@@LeighFugeGuitar I’m actually hoping to purchase one by the end of summer!
Another great video, another great reason why I love P90s
Thank you! Yeah P90s are awesome! I find them to be the perfect combo of single coils and humbuckers.
@@LeighFugeGuitar they take you an absolute different sonic world. I have 5 guitars now but this one with the focus switch is too tempting
I’m mainly a PRS guy.
I’ve been wanting a P90 axe for awhile and this might fit the bill. I really liked the one I played a couple months back, and you might have sold me.
I'd love to hear your thoughts after you try one out! I own a PRS too and I must admit the neck on the Revstar is roughly the same profile as my PRS. It's slightly on the chunky side without being a baseball bat neck. I find switching between the two to be very easy.
@@LeighFugeGuitar I actually went to a local shop and played a few for about an hour. They’re really good guitars, just not “me.”
I love this guitar
I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy the exact same model and colour as you!!! Didn't know if I wanted the humbucker model or p90 . HOWEVER you've just convinced me to go the p90 route. Also i have a sire t7 fm double humbucker guitar already and i love that !!! If you haven't tried one I'd recommend that you try one, thanks for the review. Btw love the way you play. 😁
Great choice! The humbucker Revstar is cool but for me the P90 one just has a little more on offer. I take this guitar on the road with me all the time too, it’s a great gigging guitar.
I actually have some Sire stuff on the way to me for some videos so expect to see those in the next month or two 😃 I’ve Never played a Sire before so it’ll be my first experience with one, I’m looking forward to trying one.
Thanks so much for the kind words 😃😃
You can always tell how much a guitarist loves a guitar by the constipation faces they make while they are playing it. And this is next level… a real “haven’t gone in a weeker “ 😊
Interesting analogy haha
I have the same model as you but in black. Those P90s are so versatile and the neck is a joy to play. Worth mentioning the price too as it knocks the equivalent competition out of the water. The gig back it comes with is high quality, more robust than a Fender gig bag too
I really liked it in black, but my main reason for not getting it in black was mainly just because black guitars are really hard to shoot on camera and they never look as good on video, but having seen the black one in real life a few times, I do like it! I noticed in the comments of this video a lot of other people seemed to get it in black too which is cool! Yeah I agree on the gig bag too, I haven't taken the gig bag out to a gig with me because when I tour with this guitar it goes in a different case, but the gig bag was really high quality!
Last year I bought a black RSE20 for AU $679. It was as much as I was willing to spend on a guitar considering I'm just a hobbyist. Turned out to be money well spent because I still can't put it down. I had to have it shipped from another state but it arrived in tune and was ready to play straight out of the box. Maybe one day I'll step up to an RSS20 but I'm pretty content with what I have right now.
The RSE line is killer. I made a video about 2 years ago with another TH-cam buddy of mine and we played and compared the Elements, Standard and Pro lines and the Elements series really surprised me, it really held up against the others in the shootout. The big selling point for me on wanting a Standard was the P90s and the Focus switch, it's a little more tonally versatile than the Elements, but if you need a great twin humbucker guitar, the RSE is unbeatable in that price range!
I have this guitar I use it for practice as it has stainless steel fret but I love my fender guitars and les paul
Sexy playing mate. I've got the same Standard but in black. Easily my favourite guitar. Thanks.
Thanks so much! Theyre great guitars. I tour with this one all the time and it’s very quickly become one of my most versatile and dependable guitars
Are those P90 you said were VP5B and VP5N specific to the Yamaha from Tesla, on the RSS20T I cannot find them anywhere? I would like to buy some.
just bought a black one. very nice indeed
The black one looks lovely! I almost went for that but black guitars never look as good on camera haha
no one talks about the trapez string holder. So much better as a Stoptailpiece for springy string sound.
My Revstar showed up today and my Les Paul got jealous .
Haha! I’m sure they can learn to live nicely together
NICE VIDEO, how stays the cycle hum noise with the P90s?
Thanks so much! I use this guitar on tour all the time and I've never had any major issues with hum. All P90s will get a little hum if you're using a lot of gain or running off bad power, but on the whole I've never had any issues that have been a big problem. Nothing that being quick with my volume control hasn't solved.
One great Axe. I want one
I like P90’s but tend to get 60 cycle hum that I don’t get with a Strat or a 335… I have a Classic Vibe Thinline that has P90’s but I have to use a noise reduction pedal with it at gigs
P90s can be prone to it, especially if the venue has power with a lot of hum. I find that when I use it in venues that are older with bad power I get a little hum. That's the nature of it I guess
I just bought a rsp02t wich IS thr japan pro made from a Friend wich has some health issue and cant play guitare anymore... So to help him with no expectations of it i got it 3 weeks ago, hé changed pickups on it for lollar 50s wind, and to be honest i felt in love with those p90s and this guitar, i have some fender custom shops , Gibson Les Paul, sg , some really good guitars but this yamaha IS both of two worlds with those p90s. I didnt test stock pickups but they are thé same in pro and standard ones . Your review is exactaly m'y thought about it. You should try the pro 😎. For you guys , give it a try
I’ve played a few of the pro ones and love them! Theyre great guitars. I’ve heard a lot of people say they’ve stuck Lollar pickups into them and had great results… I’m tempted to try!
I’d played the humbucker version and found if a bit deep especially using the pull switch but the P90 version is great as I played one last week . That said they’ve gone up from £600 at Xmas time to £820 now and thats a joke . There’s a fair bit of competition at that price point from Ibanez and others .
thankyou for not hanging guitars by the neck like trophies in a mancave❤
Thanks! I actually never like the way that looks in videos personally. I can see why people would like to hang guitars, but for me I just don't enjoy that, I prefer them in a rack like I have in my studio.
@@LeighFugeGuitar its actually putting all the weight of the guitar on the weakest partof the neck and allows the neck to warp...i learnt from an old roadie to keep my guitars in hard cases against wall..stacked is okay too...
Doing alot of study for my next guitar and I'm so intrigued with this guitar so far but curious as to why no one has talked about the nut being plastic - is it ok?
I've been touring this guitar non-stop since I got it 6 months ago and the nut has not caused me a single issue. According to the Yamaha website the same nut is across the whole Revstar range so I wouldn't worry about it. It feels great quality.
@@LeighFugeGuitar thank you so much for the reply
It sounds great but it could really use a nice simple clean boost pedal it could use a bit more growl and much needed sustain. As it is the sound is ringing but the band is burying that.I have a Strat with vintage PU's . Great tone but it has the same problem. If you use OD it has zero problems. But clean .... ?
I actually really like the clean tone on this, I've been touring with it a lot over the last month and I'm finding it's perfect for live cleans, especially position 2. It cuts like a Strat but it's much smoother in the mix. P90 cleans aren't for everyone, but I personally love them.
that's a VERY clean sound, almost sounds like a tele. I have the Standard with Humbuckers and it's way too dark for my liking, as a lefty, I have no choice.
Yeah the clean tones are super sparkly and really crisp. Do they not offer a P90 version for lefties? You can get P90s in Humbucker sized cases... that might be a cool upgrade for you to look into? Something like a Seymour Duncan Phat Cat would be killer in this guitar!
I own 2 variants of the Standard, IMO the P90 is a lot more versatile, just be wary of the 60 cycle hum though, it can be very very noisy
Yeah that was my logic... the HB version is killer, but the P90 version just felt like it could do more. The hum hasn't been too bad for me, I've been gigging it lots and not had any major issues, but that is always the risk with P90s
I tried some revstars because I’d seen the reviews. My impression was that they don’t match the hype.
They're not for everyone. I love them, it's one of my main touring guitars, but I appreciate they don't tick all the boxes for other people.
Didn't one of the options have stainless steel frets?
The highest price ones, the Professional range, all have stainless steel frets. They’re the Made in Japan models
My Revstar is a Element. But Lord Almighty is she smooth
I actually got to make a video a few years ago comparing the Element, Standard and Pro range to each other and the Element was killer, it was not a million miles behind the standard. The big difference is just the Standard has binding and is a little "fancier" and it comes with P90s and more advanced switching options.
Try the Fishman P90s...
Very cool guitar feels like my GAS kicked in
Give in to the GAS!! hahaha! Everyone needs a Revstar
All those little orphans behind you are green with envy...
They aren't orphaned don't worry haha, everyone gets plenty of attention in this place!
On the list still. HoHoHo? I enjoyed the vid but got to have that Sunset Burst. I did "something else" already.... One guess is all you get. haha Later!
Firstly thank you for the super thanks! That is much apprecaited as always!
Ok... one guess... well you've definitely bought SOMETHING... is it a REVSTAR? haha
The guitar is a nice one for sure, however once you stated that Yamaha is paying you for the video and provided you with the guitar; the point in mute.. However, thanks for the disclaimer note.
Yamaha pay me for my time to make the video, not my opinion. I’ve also made a bunch of other videos prior to this that they didn’t pay me for and I still liked the guitar just as much. It’s one of my main touring guitars, so that says something too I think.
Me getting paid by a brand does not reflect on my opinion. This is my job, and I get paid for doing it, but brands don’t buy what I say. Brands don’t even see the videos before they go live. I always state in videos if I get paid and provided with the product for transparency. Hope that clears it up.
@LeighFugeGuitar It is a superb guitar, as I stated and I've played it myself. But when someone states that they've been suplied with the instrument and paid for the review; you will almost never see a bad review. I've only seen one after looking at almost a hundred demos. I know yours is right on point, but only because I know the instrument.
I can’t speak for every TH-camr, but I will only make a video of something I like. I have no interest in making videos about things I don’t enjoy. I won’t accept a product, or payment for my time, for anything that i wouldn’t personally use on a regular basis. There’s enough negative stuff on the internet already, I don’t want to add to it haha! I also have no interest in creating videos that upset people or put someone’s product in a negative light. I do understand where you’re coming from though.
