Tricks and rules for matching pairs.
(Definition of a matching pair) 2 cells in a row, column or block, which have the same small numbers.
1 Matching pair + 1 empty cell. Count from 1 to 9 to find that missing number. When counting, include the numbers in the matching pair.
2 Matching pair + 2 empty cells = another matching pair.
3 If there are 2 empty cells in a row, column or block and one of the cells has 2 little numbers, then the other empty cell must have those same little numbers.
4 When you solve one of the numbers in a matching pair, then the other number is also solved.
5 You can have up to 4 matching cells in a row, column or block.
6 When you find a matching pair in a row, column or block, any other same numbers in the row, column or block can be removed.
7 Hidden matching pairs are often found on computer apps as the app does not recognize them. Then it is up to you to locate them and remove other small numbers that are not part of the matching pair
8 NOTE A triplet (3X3) and a quadruplet (4X4 ) + 2 empty cells in a row, column, or block = another matching pair. This was not covered in the tutorial.
9 NOTE Tutorial # 89 "remote matching pairs." Another trick to know about matching pairs.

After failing miserably and feeling totally dumb, I figured there must be a way to learn how. I did a search on TH-cam and came across your videos. I couldn't have asked for a better instructor. Fantastic Video as always. I gave it a good go myself but reached a sticking point, so watched your solve and it was the discovery of where the 4 in was seated in Box 4 @ 20:00 which was was the key for me. After that, all of my pencil marks unravelled themselves very nicely indeed.

Mr. Robin, Thanks for all the videos and lessons that you have given. Question: At the 17:21 tape stamp, Row 2, I noticed that you didn't complete that row using RULE 6. BLOCK One, ROW 2: [cell 1] pencil mark, pm, (1 5 6), [cell-2], pm ( 1 6). In Cross BLOCK 3,(same Row 2), Cell 8, pm 1 5. I concluded that the 1 6 matching pair in Cells one & 2 were much Stronger than the 1 5 in cell one. Hence, the pm 5 was eliminated from cell 1and the 5 became the BIG NUMBER IN BLOCK THREE, ROW 2. Also in Block 3, the one was added to Row one to complete that BLOCK. THANKS. 👍👍👍👍

Hello Carol. I think you mean you have aa matching pair. If so these are common and there are many forms of them I suggest you go to tutorial 88 (sudokugy.com) where it gives you all the rules for matching pairs. Is there somewhere we can find your puzzles to print out and give it a go before we check in with you and learn what we've missed?
Unfortunately No as I dont have the means, time and energy to do this at present. It would have to be a separate upload on youtube. I might consider it in the future as at this moment I am moving and very busy. One of the problems is that there are many paths to take when solving....it depends on what you see, when you see a path and what techniques your know to look for. hi! I paused the video at 4:25 min bc I have a question! why couldn't the nines go also in the top of the first square, only the second?
If you go to my channel page (see link below ) go to lesson one which covers TMB (Top Middle Bottom)
the R5C1 48 is missing the 9 it i not a matching pair with R5C2 48, it should be R5C1 489, R5C2 48 am i missing something. also when He excludes 8 in R5C2 why not exclude the 8 R5C1 instead. it is an option as well, right? am i missing something?
The only suggestion I can give is that you look at the puzzle again. In future may I ask that you give the mins and seconds for what you are concerned about. As I have over 15 million views , you can save me a lot of time giving these times on the video I looked at the video and to me everything is correct. Sorry. Robin.

Thank you so much but I still get stuck. At 20 minutes you say the 4 has to be in the center of the center block. Why can't it be on the left and have the 8 in the middle. I don't understand why it has to be in the center.

Lesson #88 at 19:58. Why can't it be the 4 on the left?
I was wondering the same thing. But he answers on another comment. Column 2 must have a 4. All the positions are eliminated because they either have a number in the cell already, or there is a 4 in the row, leaving only a single cell capable of holding a 4.
I have a burning question: You just placed a 4 8 matching pair in the left column, middle section. Question is if there was another number in one of those boxes, could you just erase it since the matching pair must be there alone?

You lost me at 20:50 on Left centre block when you said the only place for 4 is centre column middle row
But Left column middle row - 4 was available too. Why did you choose please
Column 2 MUST have a 4 and there was only one cell where it could go. Hope this helps.

At 20.06 Why is that the only place a 4 can go? You had a matching pair 4 and 8 and then all of a sudden there was no place else for the 4 to go?
