    Ysolda Teague has a hat pattern that a gazillion people have made called the Musselburgh hat. It has exactly the recipe you described, starting at the top with whatever yarn and needles, and measuring gauge to then follow a chart to make a hat that fits every head.

    I like Woolly Nylon serger thread for reinforcing heels and toes. It's more fluffy and stretchy than standard sewing thread so it doesn't interfere with the yarn.

    I really love your top-down hat. 💙 I also love to see you using and recommending budget friendly options for some of your sweater knitting projects. We knitters forget that we don't have to spend hundreds on sweater quantity yarns. You reminded me that Lion Brand Fisherman's Wool is a great, basic yarn. I used it in the past, but I'd honestly forgotten about it. I'm casting off the hem of a Felix Pullover using Lion Brand Fisherman's right now. As a publuc school teacher, my budget can not afford $200 plus yarn purchases for sweaters.

      It’s my pleasure! I’m always excited to share the budget-friendly yarns that seem to be unsung heroes. It should not (always) cost $200 to knit a quality sweater. I’m so glad that you’re finding joy in using these yarns. Especially Fisherman’s Wool. I love that yarn SO MUCH. Happy knitting!

    Interesting idea about the nylon thread. Might make myself a pair of socks with one heel having nylon and the other just normal. Best way to see which way works best for me!

  • @divinelyengineered
    @divinelyengineered 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    regarding the nylon, I've heard to use a yarn/thread made specifically for reinforcing. It's typically a nylon/wool blend. I have heard that if you use a regular nylon thread, that's when you get the "cutting" action. But here's hoping yours hold up well! I love the color of those socks!

    • @WOOLNEEDLESHANDS
      @WOOLNEEDLESHANDS  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm glad you thought so Karen. Thank you! And I totally agree about Patons. You could do a blind comparison test with many of the more expensive all-wool yarn options out there and I would be willing to bet Patons would come out on top more often than not. It's a solid option.

    Have yet to try holding extra nylon for sock heels and toes. However, for my most recent pair of socks, I darned the toes and bottom of heels with the same yarn i used to knit them for reinforcement. The tip was from the Saltwater Classics book by Christine Legrow + Shirley A. Scott. Time will tell.

I'm also making top down hat but crochet, and for now the shaping is weird 😅, I had to recalculate the stitch number because of the yarn, but I didn't make it quite well. And I'm sharing that because I'm using book called ''Design Your Own Crochet Projects: Magic Formulas'', which is kind of what you suggested in your 2 previous videos 😉 , will see where that journey with takes me, but anyway sounds as a trend this year.

I typically like dpn's and find almost too tricky,, and dabbled with flexi flips (which I'm new to), I got a bit done then took out....any tips for working with so few stiches to get it going? Yes I certainly will. I plan on hand-washing it like I would a sweater and laying it out to dry like I would if I were blocking it for the first time. Even though it's 45% cotton, the merino is untreated and can still felt if washed in a machine. I'm certain that this yarn will hold up for years and years.
