The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has a fantastic stock camera that ships with the device, but what about taking the Google Camera app (GCam) from Google's Pixel phones, and installing it on your S23 Ultra? Well, you CAN get better results in some situations! In this Galaxy S23 Ultra camera test you'll find out whether GCam is worth using for selfies, night shots, landscapes, and more.
Please keep in mind that Samsung Galaxy S23 users and Google camera developers have not had much time with this new series of phones for GCam development (at the time of recording), so even after testing out almost a dozen GCam ports, the Shamim port I used for this GCam camera comparison was still a little buggy.

Always nice to have options, stock cam is preferable in most situations, but once you have figured out the behavior of the GCAM mod on your phone, it can help you take amazing shots in apt conditions. Thanks for the video!

GCam is very dependant on the configs. Give some time to the developers to try it and it will be better. I had an old GCam in my phone (Redmi Note 10S) with great results, now I installed the 8.8 and 8.7 but the pictures never get the colors spot on and missed some lenses. With the old version I can access all lenses. Just give it some time, the S23 line is too new.
Hello Don! You are 100% correct. I expect there to be some well tuned config files with compatible ports in the next month or two. I may revisit this video then and make an update.
Revert back to 8.4, I use it over the 8.7
I mean i totally respect the GCam and most of your picks were made base on your preferences because the GCam pictures are wayy to cool .. but I'm not saying you are wrong i like the cool tone on the GCam as well but i don't think it's better than the stock camera app on the galaxy
Hello Alexander! I agree, the GCam photos aren't better--just my preference. With more accurate colors I think it will be a better competition though. Right now I would still say that selfies and some portrait mode shots look comparable or even better from GCam. I can't wait to test out the new stock camera update and maybe I'll put out a shorter updated comparison if there's enough improvement.
S23U is definately capable and will be tunned in 1 year time for sure.. Also every modder has their own preferences and mostly there a many gcam ports like spammed while only few really shines.
Then you have time try SGCAM 8.4 with Matteo's mod, now last is M23F (but this changes weekly), also newest GCAM ports are not tunned and not worth for now until they tune it (8.7 / 8.8). Maybe that would be worth to update this video after a while. Auxilary lens should work too (unless Samsung locks them again).

The problem is not that there are better ports, The thing is that you have to put a good lib/config in the Port. Without that, gcam is just another camera application.There is no comparison between a well configured gcam and the Samsung stock camera... (always in photography, not video). The gcam is much superior both with jpgs and even with raws (dngs).
Can you edit denoise say in Lightroom with the dngs of Gcam? Samsung you can't anymore for reason.

Hello Romain! Yes, I agree. The port wasn't calibrated for the S23U. I bet there's better GCam's out now with config files that will do a great job.
how did you use 200 mpx in gcam ?
you probably don't have the auto white balance tweaked right in gcam. what's awesome about gcam apk is that you can tweak things like color, sharpness, noise reduction, and much much more.
Some gcams like lmc give option to change auto white balance models in setting which you should change to get accurate colours.. To avoid blue green tints
Gcam makes more sense if you have a Chinese phone(Oppo, Vivo etc) cause these phones take soft portraits and selfies.
It's doesn't make much difference in samsung phones cause stock cam already has good processing.
I generally agree Techie! GCam largely provides a different look on flagships, not much of a significant improvement in quality. A lot of budget devices in general do still benefit I think.
Now try changing the zoom value to 300x or something like that

Everytime I get a Galaxy phone Gcam is one of the first apps I install for photos I use gcam then videos I use the stock camera

Hello Zain! I feel like they've started toning it down a bit on the saturation recently. Maybe over the last 12-18 months? But you're right they absolutely used to be very punchy, even overly punchy.
Good video and nice comparison. But when you said it is better, it is just your opinion. (Respectable). I still prefer the stock app. I like my pictures to come out as natural as possible. Colors and lightning needs to come out natural. Gcam here looks to put way too many filters on top of the pictures. Samsung is known for their oversaturation and exaggeration of colors. Something I already don't like. With this Gcam, it is making it way worst. The google pixel with their own stock Gcam takes the best overall STILL pictures of any smart phone now. Pixel cameras don't show pictures like this, even with Gcam install on your Samsung phones.
Hello Hienho15! You're right, this GCam is not configured for the S23, so the output is off. The stock camera is absolutely more color accurate. I'm thinking about finding or configuring a GCam port for the S23 that will be a lot better. I do still think some of the GCam shots turned out nicer but it's pretty stylized like you said. I'd say it's better to start with the stock camera and adjust that image than try to use what this GCam outputs without any editing.
@@phonecomp I tried to download a Gcam app one time, and there are way too many bugs.
@@hienho15 It really depends on the port and if there are config files available. There are plenty of stable ports out there, but compatibility is not guaranteed for every device. I think it's fun to tinker and test out different camera apps, but it usually isn't as easy as I would like.
@@phonecomp nothing wrong with trying. But I am fine with stock camera app. I know what I am going to get. Just wish Samsung can do what Google pixel does on their still pictures. If it does, then I can claim Samsung has the best overall camera. The reason why I chose Samsung over the pixel is because the other main important thing for a smart phone....Connectivity, battery life, charging speed, and touch responses. It is way better on my Samsung than the pixel. Miss the pixel stills and the voice to text but connectivity needs to be more reliable. Can't undervalue reliable connection with cell tower. I sold and return so many pixels because of those problems.
The blue tint is severe, many shots are unacceptable. Hopefully the latest build offers better color rendition.
Shamim gcam is not good. You should check MGC 8.7 or MGC 8.6 and give some video please these two gcam are very good. Take pictures like a pixel phone. I run these two gcams on the OnePlus 9 and get great pictures.
What is frustrating is that there is no real winner, so you have to take photos with both cams and compare all the time. I will stick with stock because there are way more options/modes
That is definitely fair! On flagships, I generally end up using the stock camera as my daily camera app.
If you know how to configure an xml file for that gcam, believe me it would take a lot of advantage of the limited stock camera

Hello Jesús! Yes, unless you're using a Pixel phone (or GCam) there will be noise in lower light scenes. Even with Pixels, the method they use to get rid of most of the noise is to basically blur the details. Even with bigger sensors in these pricey new phones--it's still a classic problem in photography. There are denoising apps/software that can help if you want to go that far.

gcams are modded camera versions of the stock pixel cameras, this means that has to be used with configs, and if you want a more professional look some luts or libraries, the stock gcam is a trash camera, but with the prefered configs for your device, can be the best camera app to use. This is from my experience with +5 gcams tested.
Stock camera has improved a lot getting accurate color.

Hey A42! Possibly a Samsung update might be causing the crashing issue. It's still up and running on my device, but I installed a few months ago. Hmmmmm not sure why it's being detected as malware. Is a third party app labeling it as malware or something from the system? I'm sorry it's giving you trouble!

Hello Travellingmac! Yes, it is pretty subjective. Depending on what you care to do with the photos, photo quality might not matter as much as processing speed even. I'm mainly pointing out differences and my opinion.

Hello Jai! Hmmmmm you could test in the advanced settings, but it might be worth finding either a config file or another GCam port. I plan on comparing photos from the OnePlus Nord 3 or the Nothing Phone 2 when they come out this month. I'll test out some more ports for the S23 Ultra then. Sorry, I haven't had time to test any more recently.

Hello Thedirection! For many of these shots, personal preference certainly counts. Generally, the stock Samsung camera produces good results--even better now after a few camera specific updates.

Hello Cristian! I do have plans on another GCam install video later this year, but honestly-it's a wat of trial and error. I just download a port (and an xml file if I find one that may work for the phone) then take a photo and a video in each mode (photo, portrait, video--and I make sure to flip to the selfie cam as well).

It looks like the gcam port has something off. If you add a pixel to it there should be differences? Such blue shifts I don't have but maybe that's because I use a pixel 4a ...before Google went retarded mode.

@@juniormpondo7274 You're right, I was thinking this was for my Poco F5 video. When I originally installed this port, I didn't need a config but with Samsung updates something might have broken in terms of functionality.

Hello Sercan! It definitely performs better on Pixel phones for sure, but with a little more time I'm confident someone will tailor a GCam port specifically for the S23 Ultra.
@@phonecomp I still think it's great to have a really close to GCAM experience on S23U. I really wish we could use the standard S23 cameras, as in the 3x and 10x telephoto lens with GCAM. Now that would be incredible!

Understand, I definitely prefer a certain "look." Which GCam usually delivers on a lot of devices. I know it's not for everyone! Especially if you prefer to edit photos in post.
