I was always of the opinion that the first EQG could have benefited a lot from a full-length runtime. It really needed to build Sunset up more, characterize her a bit, explain her plan in greater detail, and grant her reformation the time and reaction it needed. Flash could have used some characterization and something to do as well. If Rainbow Rocks had a major fault for me, it was with Flash. It is arguable that months have passed since the Fall Formal, and it is just ridiculous that in spite of time passing, he was still smitten by a girl that he could not have spent more than half an hour with. It is like they were trying to draw attention to the fact that his Primary personality trait is "Poorly written love interest". Not really something I would want to draw attention to. I view the Humane Six's arguing as valid characterization, since these girls lack the character growth that their pony counterparts had, and they are still getting used to each other's quirks. Their interactions feel natural to me, as they spent the last few years not being friends. It makes sense that Applejack would take issue with Rainbow's Bravado and Rarity's Fashion obsession. It fits that Fluttershy would not feel comfortable asserting herself against Rainbow. It makes sense that the five of them would still not trust Sunset, but be trying to hide that for Twilight's sake. It also makes sense that when the chips are down and the stress levels start to rise, all of these issues would surface and it would take Sunset Shimmer learning her first real Friendship Lesson to help them all through it. Honestly, I hope they make something great of the Third one. It will be interesting to see how the Human Twilight gets involved with this.

If Sunset arrived in the spring of their freshmen year, and took about six months to get used to the culture and solidify herself as the winner of the Princess Title, that would make the first picture of Sunset as Princess from the Spring fling of their sophmore year. The second would then be the Fall Formal of Junior Year, and the third would be the Spring Fling Junior Year, making The Fall Formal when Twilight appeared the beginning of their Senior year. Six months later, we are now into the Spring of Senior year. There is not a lot of High School left. Also, if you are talking about McCarthy's comment on the Rainbow Rocks DVD extras, I am pretty sure it was a joke. It makes absolutely zero sense, given Flash arbitrarily asking about Twilight, the Dazzlings apparently sitting on their hands for six months, and The fact that there is absolutely no way six months could have passed in Equestria.
I've taken to calling Sunset the Ahsoka Tanno of MLP...why? Because like Ahsoka when she was first introduced as Anakin's apprentice the fandom was ready to hang her from a lamp post, but by the time Clone Wars ended she was one of the most popular and beloved characters in the entire Star Wars franchise
Hey, a _Star vs the Forces of Evil_ reference! Also, I have the third movie set to record tomorrow. Yay Canada! I think that people who say the HuMane5 were OOC forget that they're not the ones we've watched grow and change over 4 (now 5) seasons. Also, they're high school students and not the equivalent of young adults with adult responsibilities. These differences will mean a different rate of growth as characters, and different characters as a whole. As to Flash, we have sub-minimal characterization for Brad (his EQG self) and next to nothing for the pony version. If DHX could give him some proper characterization, nobody would have a valid reason for not liking him. And it's not like it's particularly difficult: they gave Coco Pommel enough so that she has a fair following of her own, and a single line of speech lent previously-unseen dimension to recent addition Sassy Saddles. So what's the deal with Flash? I don't think the writers really want him around, so they work with him as little as Hasbro allow them to. Really, that's a shame, because if they gave him some actual character they might enjoy working with him. Really, the show is lacking in strong characterization for its male characters as anything but the fall guy or silent support. They don't have to be the strongest, but I think they should at least be useful.
I really am Looking forward to the Equestria Games. I can't wait to see Human Twilight, and to see what happens in the movie. I'm really interested in seeing where she will stand with the main human six at the end of the movie.

The thing that I probably likes the most about this was the voice actor for Adagio. It felt perfect for the leader in a trio of snobby girls who sing. I don’t know if it was on purpose, but I found it interesting.

While Rainbow Rocks wasn't offensively bad, I really didn't get a sense that it was better. My biggest criticism with Equestria Girls is that they take something cool and water it down. Mediocre girls is being done to death on Monster High or Ever After High. In MLP, the mane 6 have jobs and ambition. RD wants to be a Wonderbolt, Apple Jack wants to run a successful farm. And those ambitions are part of who they are. Here the music is just part of the theme of the toyline. The biggest drawback is that the draw: horsie in human town is gone. There are no stakes for this story. Fight a magical monster whose power is to that they make people jerks? Isn't that Care Bear level? Get Tenderheart on the horn.

Do more sock puppet recaps! This was actually more entertaining (for me, at least) than the movie itself. Rainbow Rocks was a huge improvement over the first, but I still don't think it was great. It wasn't awful, it was just kind of meh. If EQG1 rated about a 2 out of 10 imho, I'd give Rainbow Rocks about a 5. A big step forward, but they still have a ways to go.
People complain about Sunsets.. turn-around. Yeah, it was quick and forced.. But has everyone forgotten Princess Luna had the exact same thing? Nightmare Moon was birthed from feelings of anger and bitterness, attacks her own sister and is banished into the moon returns 1000 years later, banishes her sister to the sun, enslaves all of Equestria to eternal night and God knows what else had the mane 6 not beaten her... and then cries when its over and everything's okay? Sunset Shimmer and Princess Luna had the exact same turn-around.
Emerald Noir in the comics luna was kinda possessed by moon demons and in the show luna seemed very confused when she was reformed and didn't appear to age you can read the comic it makes more sense
ZomG, that was 98% best abridged episode I've ever seen. I emphasize the following two criticisms are emphasized because it puzzles me given how right you got everything else . Your summation/spoof of the movie was made of almost pure win. (Two small marring points imo are: dissing Fluttershy because her instrument is the tambourine. First, the big thing about that song are the lyrics, which require no musical talent to write. Second, she sings _backing_ vocals only because she's too shy. It's clear she has musical talent. _Her_ songs can enslave hamsters after all! In a world with no magic that's pretty deep understanding of music. (Don't tell me it's Human!Shy's Stare analogue, because continuity violoating Bats! aside, Fluttershy doesn't just throw the stare around casually: she or her friends have to be in _dire_ danger...also, the Stare is Fluttershy channeling her anger and there's no anger at all in the hampsterslavement.) And you kind of mischaracterized the exchange between Twilight and Sunset at Pinkie's. I mean, fundamentally. That scene has become shipping fuel because they do share a moment of profound shared emotion...they just are both too clueless to help each other. (Seriously, does Princess Celestia have a criteria her personal students have to have Asperger's ? o_O ) ) But these are quibbles. I would gush for paragraphs about how much I loved the rest of the sock puppets but then I'd look like a creepy sycophant. Please assume I give you as much insightful, effusive praise as you can stand. ^.^ Your review is pretty spot on too. Finally someone notes that the Dazzling songs were better...which kind of makes sense, but is slightly head scratchy too. Though I think you should have emphasized the songs put the first movie to absolute, Japanese ritual suicide level shame. Because not only are they much better....their use in the scenes they go in _makes sense_. The grating levels of handwaving for the vapid songs of the first movie are almost entirely absent. Really liked your summation of the whole redemption arc for Sunset Shimmer: it exacts a high cost but it was totally worth it ^.^ I would also have underlined that conflict oriented interaction is still interaction. The first movie was horrible because it proceeded from the basis "Twilight acts like her intelligence got regressed to foalhood." (The stuff that should have bothered her most was resolved immediately. And stuff that shouldn't have puzzled her at all chewed up so much screen time.) The level of character development in EQG made the establishing character moments in the series pilot look like Tolstoy for length. Thus, the EQG reconciliation felt meaningless. We just had to buy that they are _destined_ to be Dear Companions. So the use of bitchiness to drive character interaction wasn't just tolerable but brilliant. In a single movie they managed to make me _care_ about the HuMane Five. I _skipped_ seeing Rainbow Rocks in the theater because I thought that "Better than Ever" was going to be the climax song and it was horrible, so I didn't even give it a chance. Now, my first fanfiction is going to be a rebuild of EQG1 centered on Sunset Shimmer having a plan that makes sense, and Twilight being _abducted_ by Sunset Shimmer and the school as basically a slightly Twins Peak-ish maze she is trying to escape. If you told pre Rainbow Rocks me that this movie could make me want to spend 100-200K words on a subcontinuity I ended the first movie being a championship league hater of, I'd have said you were crazy. (And I often have a hard time watching characters fight because of my own issues. I just think you're damning them with faint praise in not spending a couple more sentences dwelling on how amazingly well judged this element of the story composition went.) I just feel sad that Haber couldn't pull off the third movie _except_ at the climax. Your comments on that are why I still like this subcontinuity, even though Friendship Games was largely _worse_ than EQG1...and once again, the reason was they had just enough character interaction to make me care (with the crowning moment of heartwarming between magic'd up Sunset and Twilight.) As a Flash apologist, I must admit the only thing I could say he has done to build any good will in my book was do Twilight's silly horse dance at the end of the first film. I am a sucker for little bits like that rather than grand overtures. I could say that there exists some great "FlashLight" fan fiction, but I guess you could excuse almost any character or relationship with that.
I preferred your older style of reviews. The sock puppets are a funny aside, but not as the main aspect of the review. I agree with the points you make, I just like the older style better. Keep up the good work.

While Rainbow Rocks wasn't offensively bad, I really didn't get a sense that it was better. My biggest criticism with Equestria Girls is that they take something cool and water it down. Mediocre girls is being done to death on Monster High or Ever After High. In MLP, the mane 6 have jobs and ambition. RD wants to be a Wonderbolt, Apple Jack wants to run a successful farm. And those ambitions are part of who they are. Here the music is just part of the theme of the toyline. The biggest drawback is that the draw: horsie in human town is gone. There are no stakes for this story. Fight a magical monster whose power is to that they make people jerks? Isn't that Care Bear level? Get Tenderheart on the horn.

Do more sock puppet recaps! This was actually more entertaining (for me, at least) than the movie itself.
Rainbow Rocks was a huge improvement over the first, but I still don't think it was great. It wasn't awful, it was just kind of meh. If EQG1 rated about a 2 out of 10 imho, I'd give Rainbow Rocks about a 5. A big step forward, but they still have a ways to go.
People complain about Sunsets.. turn-around. Yeah, it was quick and forced..
But has everyone forgotten Princess Luna had the exact same thing?
Nightmare Moon was birthed from feelings of anger and bitterness, attacks her own sister and is banished into the moon returns 1000 years later, banishes her sister to the sun, enslaves all of Equestria to eternal night and God knows what else had the mane 6 not beaten her... and then cries when its over and everything's okay?
Sunset Shimmer and Princess Luna had the exact same turn-around.
Emerald Noir in the comics luna was kinda possessed by moon demons and in the show luna seemed very confused when she was reformed and didn't appear to age you can read the comic it makes more sense

ZomG, that was 98% best abridged episode I've ever seen. I emphasize the following two criticisms are emphasized because it puzzles me given how right you got everything else . Your summation/spoof of the movie was made of almost pure win.
(Two small marring points imo are: dissing Fluttershy because her instrument is the tambourine. First, the big thing about that song are the lyrics, which require no musical talent to write. Second, she sings _backing_ vocals only because she's too shy. It's clear she has musical talent. _Her_ songs can enslave hamsters after all! In a world with no magic that's pretty deep understanding of music.
(Don't tell me it's Human!Shy's Stare analogue, because continuity violoating Bats! aside, Fluttershy doesn't just throw the stare around casually: she or her friends have to be in _dire_ danger...also, the Stare is Fluttershy channeling her anger and there's no anger at all in the hampsterslavement.)
And you kind of mischaracterized the exchange between Twilight and Sunset at Pinkie's. I mean, fundamentally. That scene has become shipping fuel because they do share a moment of profound shared emotion...they just are both too clueless to help each other. (Seriously, does Princess Celestia have a criteria her personal students have to have Asperger's ? o_O ) )
But these are quibbles. I would gush for paragraphs about how much I loved the rest of the sock puppets but then I'd look like a creepy sycophant. Please assume I give you as much insightful, effusive praise as you can stand. ^.^
Your review is pretty spot on too. Finally someone notes that the Dazzling songs were better...which kind of makes sense, but is slightly head scratchy too. Though I think you should have emphasized the songs put the first movie to absolute, Japanese ritual suicide level shame. Because not only are they much better....their use in the scenes they go in _makes sense_. The grating levels of handwaving for the vapid songs of the first movie are almost entirely absent.
Really liked your summation of the whole redemption arc for Sunset Shimmer: it exacts a high cost but it was totally worth it ^.^
I would also have underlined that conflict oriented interaction is still interaction. The first movie was horrible because it proceeded from the basis "Twilight acts like her intelligence got regressed to foalhood."
(The stuff that should have bothered her most was resolved immediately. And stuff that shouldn't have puzzled her at all chewed up so much screen time.)
The level of character development in EQG made the establishing character moments in the series pilot look like Tolstoy for length. Thus, the EQG reconciliation felt meaningless. We just had to buy that they are _destined_ to be Dear Companions.
So the use of bitchiness to drive character interaction wasn't just tolerable but brilliant. In a single movie they managed to make me _care_ about the HuMane Five. I _skipped_ seeing Rainbow Rocks in the theater because I thought that "Better than Ever" was going to be the climax song and it was horrible, so I didn't even give it a chance.
Now, my first fanfiction is going to be a rebuild of EQG1 centered on Sunset Shimmer having a plan that makes sense, and Twilight being _abducted_ by Sunset Shimmer and the school as basically a slightly Twins Peak-ish maze she is trying to escape. If you told pre Rainbow Rocks me that this movie could make me want to spend 100-200K words on a subcontinuity I ended the first movie being a championship league hater of, I'd have said you were crazy.
(And I often have a hard time watching characters fight because of my
own issues. I just think you're damning them with faint praise in not
spending a couple more sentences dwelling on how amazingly well judged
this element of the story composition went.)
I just feel sad that Haber couldn't pull off the third movie _except_ at the climax. Your comments on that are why I still like this subcontinuity, even though Friendship Games was largely _worse_ than EQG1...and once again, the reason was they had just enough character interaction to make me care (with the crowning moment of heartwarming between magic'd up Sunset and Twilight.)

As a Flash apologist, I must admit the only thing I could say he has done to build any good will in my book was do Twilight's silly horse dance at the end of the first film. I am a sucker for little bits like that rather than grand overtures.
I could say that there exists some great "FlashLight" fan fiction, but I guess you could excuse almost any character or relationship with that.

Cellspex, just to note to say that the Dazzlings scare me a lot because they have the ability to turn innocent people into jerks and I whenever I see it, I can do it in two ways: one way is to scream at them nonstop, all day and the other way is to hit them on the head nonstop so they can lose their memories. If they lose their memories, then they will forget who they are. Finally, if I have the right time, I am going to give these enchantress a piece of my mind.
